Reviews: The book is extremely enlightening. It is also very well researched and referenced. I checked out a very large number of the references, but then finally stopped doing that because I got the same result everytime; the references are all valid. The last 1/8" of the book is references. You'll find out after reading the book (and checking on the references for yourself) that wheat-free living is very "counter-intuitive" in our culture. The government and mega-business have convinced us that wheat (especially wholegrain wheat) is necessary and healthy. This is so very wrong. Nearly criminal. Wheat (and a diet that includes other whole-grains) is just the opposite of healthy. Wheat products produce huge blood sugar spikes that lead to everything from diabetes to heart disease. Enough preaching,... read the book and find out all this stuff for yourself.
I started the wheat-free system in early October 2011. It is a month later, and I am enjoying these benefits so far: -- the headaches I have endured for decades (several per week) are GONE!! -- more energy -- easier to fall asleep,.. no more melatonin, no more "sleeping aids," just put head on pillow, close eyes, wake up later -- losing about a pound per week (I started at 211. I am 6'3") -- joint pain is decreasing, (I am 64) -- appetite has lessened; no more cravings or constant self-discipline required to avoid snacking -- get full sooner; gorging myself just doesn't happen anymore (Golden Corral loves me now) Please don't ever take this book away from me.
Most people's first reaction to Wheat Belly is to think that this is part of some sort of fad diet without any basis in reality. After all, how can one food group (Carbs) and one food in particular (Wheat) really cause so many of the problems our society faces such as Obesity and Diabetes. Skepticism is a good thing, but so are results. All I can say is that my health and appearance dramatically improved after buying this book and applying its recommendations. I had been eating relatively "healthy" according to conventional wisdom and working out 5 times a week. I wasn't in horrible health, but I didn't feel that great and couldn't get that chiseled physique I wanted. After reading the book and following the diet it lays out, I have lost about 15 pounds and my waist has grown significantly smaller all after just 2 months. I have more energy, don't have carb crashes, don't get hungry all the time, and generally feel like I am in much better health. Best of all, I am getting in the best shape of my life and am getting the toned body I couldn't before. This isn't some expensive diet program and the only money I spent was to buy the book which details the problems with wheat and suggests an alternative diet. Frankly if you just eliminate wheat and limit carbs, you don't have to even buy the book but you might as well learn the science behind it for less than 20 bucks.
Obviously under a new wheat-free diet, you cannot eat old favorites like pizza, hamburgers, cookies, and the rest, but that does not mean you cannot eat great food. I rediscovered the wonders of nuts and cheese which you can eat unlimited in this diet and still lose weight. If you want to indulge, order a juicy hamburger and don't eat the bun or got out for a nice steak. If you don't know if you can live without all those carbs, then ask yourself if they are worth being overweight and in poor health. Once you give up wheat and limit other carbs, you cravings for these things go away. I have gone to parties with warm Chocolate Chip Cookies and I genuinely had no desire to eat them. That is just one example of the amazing benefits you will see and learn after reading this book. I wouldn't be recommending this book if it didn't truly change my life. Our collective health is too important to ignore this book and you will not regret reading Wheat Belly and following its wheat-free lifestyle.
