The Sixth Street Bridge is a viaduct bridge that connects the downtown and Boyle Heights areas of Los Angeles, California. It spans the Los Angeles River, the Santa Ana Freeway (US 101), and the Golden State Freeway (I-5), as well as Metrolink and Union Pacific railroad tracks and several local streets. The viaduct is composed of three independent structures: the reinforced concrete west segment, the central steel arch segment over the river, and the reinforced concrete east segment

adaptive Re-use

live/work A new vernacular of residential architecture has appeared in downtown Los Angeles. Due to major incentives from city hall, and the push to revitalize the downtown area, live/work apartments are filling many obsolete and abandoned comercial buildings

Designing within an existing framework can produce more complex and inventive design solutions than designing on an empty site. An existing frame presents challeneges to pre-existing ideas and intentions, and divernts the designer towards an unexpected and unforseen solutions.

JAVIER VENDRALL - MASTER CLASS

WINE SHOP BARCELONA SPAIN

ABV (Alcohol By Volume) is a concept for a wine store with an emphasis on an intimate shopping experience for the visitor. To achieve this intimate effect the main space is holding nine freestanding volumes each creating a different atmosphere within, depending on what they contain. This allows the visitor to experience an element of surprise when they enter each room, within the main room. The volumes are made of different color transluscent acrylic to create a layering effect from the front to the back of the store. These acrylic volumes turn into light boxes and serve as the main lighting source in the space along with floor to roof glowing tubes that are found within most of the volumes. Each room holds its own purpose whether its an outdoor classroom, or specifically storing wine by type. Reiterating elements of surprise, each room also contains their own special features for example a spiral staircase located within one of the rooms gives access to the rooftop garden, where the volumes and light tubes have punched through the ceiling to allow for seating and lounging in an unexpected outdoor patio space. By manipulating this large space into many individual environments, the visitor is sure to spend time exploring and will leave with a memorable experience.
