SHED: Design-Build As a group of 15 first year students, we were given the task of designing and building a shed for the masonry reclamation center at the Penn State Center for Sustainability. The shed was created to serve as a tool shed as well as an effective workspace/social gathering area near the lovingly named “Brick Pile”. It was designed with sustainability in mind by reusing an existing shed’s structure and creating a water collection center within it.

ANTIQUE: Lamp Design-Build An Antique wooden vacuum found in Tyrone, PA. The design challenge was to redesign found objects into working desk lamps. The intervention was kept as small as possible in order to keep the beauty and elegance already found on the antique sweeper. The metal trays found on the bottom of the sweeper was reproposed as lamp shades that pivot and move up and down the handle to work at different heights and angles.

BRIDGE: Artist’s Residence A digital performance artist is the hypothetical client for this project. The site is situated behind an old factory building. On the site is an existing artist’s studio with the same factory aesthetic. The digital artist needs a residence built next to his studio. Going off of the artist’s appreciation of contrasts between natural and man-made, the diagram of the residence focuses to address contrast using materials and their expected shapes being dissimilar.

YARD: The Philadelphia Navy Yard Sustainability Center This design is a take on a center of sustainability in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Using interior and exterior courtyards to create celebration spaces, these spaces focus on education of water collection, geothermic heating, and vegetation. The last celebration space focuses on the general exchange of knowledge and innovation. The overall building serves as a community center for collaboration to serve and promote a sustainable way of living for the city of Philadelphia.

CITY: The Pittsburgh Northside Library This library design is for the Northside neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The project was created as an experiment space based on the ideals of a city plan and how those could be incorporated into a building. Inspiration came from the 9th century city of Baghdad, once known as the city of knowledge. The diagram is based off the city’s circular plan with radiating program focused on the accumulation of knowledge from the center space. UP UP

RIVER: Roman Intervention The design challenge of the ARTURBAIN competition was to create an urban intervention on a site of our choosing in a 3 person team. Our site is along the Tiber River in Rome on what used to be the Via Trinitatis. The intervention reconnected the fragmented street and gave access to the riverfront, creating a fully accessible green space.

Each site was each given separate interventions to create space for the public and a university. This site had a 10 foot elevation change between the ancient Via Trinitatis and the modern Via Lungotevere which had heavy automobile circulation. The idea of this classroom building was to encourage the spilling in circulation to the Trinitatis from the new street and the newer green pathway.

EXTENSION: Building For The 21st Century Man My undergraduate thesis explores the changing paradigms of new media technology and how it has altered human behavior. The next generation will demand a responsive world with an infrastructure for communication and architecture cannot be any different. These technologies create an environment where structure needs to be malleable enough to change yet resilient enough to survive. Using an abandoned Naval Hospital in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, this project creates an innovation hub by using the existing building to pay tribute to the archival nature of the internet and an extension with the possibility for future expansion to respond to what innovators need then and there.

Using hollow steel columns to be used as “extension columns, future addition was made to be easily done by developers and the intellectual community. These columns would come fully equipped with outlets, brackets for easy building, and a top extension for canopies, LED lighting, solar panels, or small wind turbine.

STOP: Penn State Harrisburg Student Enrichment Center As part of Penn State’s InterDisciplinary Collaborative Studio, 5 teams of students are formed each consisting of 1 architect, 1 landscape architect, 1 structural engineer, 1 mechanical engineer, 1 lighting/electrical engineer, and 1 construction manager. We are tasked to give ourselves a firm name and graphic recognition. The name our team chose is InterWeave Creative, signifying the intercrossing of each discipline, and taking the whole as one beautiful design.

The Stop is the in-progress project for the Student Enrichment Center of Penn State Harrisburg. We thought of the stop concept as a tribute for the transportation methods around the campus including: an airport, train station, freight center, and highway. We assessed that the students were needed a space to able to slow down and stop in the face so much rapid movement around them. The concept of The Stop is currently informing the building to create an open space for student interaction.
