SELECTION POLICY

The Selection Policy at CHBC is designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in the process of selecting teams for various competitions, including Pennants and Social Bowls. This policy outlines the procedures to be followed by the Selection Committee and sets forth the criteria upon which selections are based.

The primary objectives of this policy are to:

1. Select the most competent teams to represent the Club in Pennant competitions.

2. Foster the growth and development of members by integrating experienced players with those at earlier stages of their bowling journey.

3. Uphold principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability in all selection decisions.

Role of the Selection Committee:

1. The Selection Committee is responsible for choosing teams or individuals for Pennant games and social bowls.

2. The Committee exercises full discretion in selections, guided by the criteria outlined in this policy and the strategic direction set by the Bowls Advisory Committee.

3. Decisions are ideally made by consensus, with the Chair of Selectors, or the Chair of the meeting if the COS is absent, having the deciding vote if necessary.

4. Selectors are expected to support the Committee’s decisions as their own.

5. Prior to the team’s being announced, the Selection Committee will attempt to make contact with any player selected in a position/grade below that to which they have most recently/regularly represented the Club, to discuss their selection.

6. The Selection Committee must be prepared to justify its decisions to the Bowls Advisory Committee upon request.

Criteria for Pennant Selection:

Selections are primarily based on performance and may also consider:

1. Attendance at club events, competitions, and training sessions.

2. Availability for at least 80% of Pennant season games.

3. Willingness and capability to play under various conditions, including Zone and State Playoffs.

4. Demonstrated respect towards fellow players and officials.

5. Ability to function effectively within a team.

6. Positive attitude and commitment to representing CHBC.

7. Achievements in club, zone, or state competitions.

8. Other relevant factors as deemed necessary.

9. Acceptance of the selected grade and position by nominated players.

Player Obligations:

Players are expected to:

1. Familiarize themselves with this Selection Policy and its criteria.

2. Accept the selection process, with the option to discuss non-selection or relegation with the Selection Committee.

3. Commit to playing the entire Pennant season and supporting their team and the club.

4. Follow the skip’s instructions without dissent.

5. Adhere to Bowls NSW and CHBC uniform policies when representing the Club.

6. Abide by relevant club smoking/vaping regulations.

SELECTION POLICY

7. Conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the reputation of CHBC.

8. Indicate their availability on the team sheet at least 48 hours before play.

9. Understand that unavailability may affect re-selection into the same team or grade. Criteria for Social Selection: Selectors will:

1. Ensure teams comprise players of diverse skill levels to promote skill development.

2. Maintain balanced teams to ensure fair competition.

3. Provide opportunities for new bowlers to play with experienced mentors.

4. Ensure all players have the chance to participate.

5. Diversify competition formats to offer varied playing experiences. The exception will be on Saturdays, where the intention is that the Selectors will select teams consisting of players of similar grade and experience (including those being developed for promotion) to provide all players with a stronger level of competition. This selection approach validates why the prizemoney is allocated on a best winning margin basis.

Conclusion:

This Selection Policy aims to uphold the values of fairness, transparency, and accountability in team selection at CHBC. Regular review and feedback mechanisms will ensure its continued effectiveness and relevance.

This Selection Policy was approved by CHBC’s Bowls Advisory Committee on 25/03/2024.
