President’s Report

CEO’s Report Members, with each edition of Chevron that we publish I’m reminded of how much we have achieved, and how many significant milestones lie ahead of us.

Welcome to the July-August edition of Chevron magazine. The Centenary of ANZAC commemoration has begun and we have a commitment to ensuring the next generations understand the when, where and why of The First World War – “The Great War”. The Centenary of ANZAC is not going to be just about the next four years, nor the memorials we refurbish or the community events held. With the Centenary we hope to instill in a new generation an understanding of the freedom that we enjoy today, and the many men and women who sacrificed their futures to serve and safeguard that freedom. The Club and Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee look forward to bringing you updates about commemorative events being held at the Club and in the community. There is much activity going on now behind the scenes and we will keep you abreast of the events here and around Australia. There’s always something for everyone at our Club and July-August is no exception. With delicious wines from the Barossa being presented by the winemaker on Wednesday 23 July and New Zealand wines being showcased on Wednesday 10 September. Be sure to book early. We also have great entertainment coming to our Club during July-August. The iconic Marcia Hines returns on Saturday 16 August and our Christmas In July dinner and show starring The Enormous Horns is not to be missed on Saturday 26 July. As part of our Funky Fridays, we feature Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody on Friday 25 July, and Desperado: The Eagles Show on Friday 29 August. Father’s Day is really special this year, with Max Pellicano performing his Elvis To The Max show. Head to Viva Grill and treat Dad to a feast that’s fit for a king, with $69 seafood platters and $29 mixed grill platters. On behalf of the Board, thank you once again for your support and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

During May, we were thrilled to receive the Sports Award at the ClubsNSW Club & Community Awards, in recognition of our commitment to community sport. Other finalists in this category were sporting clubs, so this is a wonderful achievement for us. The award recognised our work in creating the Cooks River Sports Alliance, an alliance that brought together 40 local community organisations to address barriers to sports participation. Following this achievement we’re looking to extend this community engagement process to other worthy projects in areas such as Heritage and Culture, and the Arts and Community Services. We’re proud to have contributed more than $2.6m to the community in the last 5 years – to schools, sporting clubs, other community groups, registered charities and welfare service providers. We continue to invest in our long-term future as we move into Stage 2 of our Masterplan. Projects include (pending final Council approval) 80 extra car spaces in our Canterbury Rd carpark, an upgraded Club façade, expanded facilities for the CHP School of Hospitality and group fitness and circuit training rooms for Anytime Fitness. The combined Club and Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee continue to build a Centenary of ANZAC events program to mark 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War. I am pleased to announce our first Club event will be a Commemoration Ball here at the Club on Saturday 9 August. During the Centenary of ANZAC, Australians will remember not only the original Anzacs who served at Gallipoli and the battles of the Western Front but more than a century of service and sacrifice by Australian servicemen and servicewomen. Our Club of course would not be the success it is today without the continued patronage of members and we thank you for your ongoing support.

Neville Brown President Dean Thomas Chief Executive Officer Every year businesses with over 100 employees are required to lodge a report with the Workplace Gender Equity Agency (WGEA) and to notify their members and employees upon lodgment every year. If you are interested in viewing our Workplace Public Report for the 2013-2014 reporting year, a copy will be made available at Reception. Please take this as notification that we have fulfilled such reporting and accessibility requirements and have thus been considered compliant by the WGEA. Chevron 7

The ANZAC Centenary marks 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War. Australians will remember not only the original ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but also commemorates more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and servicewomen encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

As mentioned in the CEO’s Report, we recently formed a joint committee, The CHP RSL Club and Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee, to co-ordinate local activities and events to mark the Centenary of ANZAC within our community. The Committee is building a program that will run throughout 2014-2018, commencing with a Commemoration Ball here at the Club on Saturday 9 August.

“HELP us tell your story”

share your story chprsl@chprsl.com.au

We look forward to informing you of upcoming events and encourage all our Members to become involved in these activities during this period.

Does a friend or a member of your family have a connection to The First World War? Is there something tucked away in your family’s archives – a photo, a medal, a letter, for example? Perhaps a member of your family was a wartime caregiver, an administrator, or a civilian with a tale to tell. We’d love to hear stories from the local community – stories of comradeship, tales of humour, bravery, and everything in between, to remember the service and sacrifice of Australians in WW1. Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club and the Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee have created a joint fund for local commemoration activities. The Club and Committee are working with local schools, Councils and community groups to mark the Centenary of ANZAC and would like to share your stories. Club’s commitment to local sporting community recognised at ClubsNSW Awards Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club was recognised for its commitment to local sport, winning the Sport Award at the prestigious ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards on Friday May 9. The Club beat three sports clubs to the top prize.

CHP RSL was the proud recipient of the ClubsNSW Sport Award at the ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards on Friday, 9 May. Pictured is CHP RSL President Neville Brown, Community Sports/ClubGRANTS Co-ordinator Paul Kougias, CHP RSL CEO Dean Thomas and ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball.

CHP RSL was acknowledged for its commitment to sustaining local sporting clubs and making a difference in the community at a grass-roots level. In 2013, the Club’s support through the ClubGRANTS program provided over $200,000 to 20 local volunteer-based sporting organisations, with almost 10,000 registered players and over 800 volunteers. The Club’s contribution to ClubGRANTS is assisting with the purchase of sporting equipment and jerseys, sports field maintenance, helping holiday sports clinics get underway and funding coaching programs and player scholarships. CHP RSL’s broader ClubGRANTS program has supported over 100 local organisations with almost $1m worth of funding in 2013/4, which is 20% of the Club’s annual profit.

Boosting sport participation: The Cooks River Sporting Alliance (CRSA) and Carnival of the Codes The ClubsNSW Sport Award was also awarded in recognition of another grass-roots CHP RSL initiative, the Cooks River Sporting Alliance (CRSA). Made up of 15 local sports clubs, 15 local schools and 10 community groups, the CRSA was formed in 2013 in response to findings that local sporting clubs’ participation rates were in a state of decline. CHP RSL consulted with the community to pinpoint innovative ways to reverse this trend, and to deliver valuable resources to ensure the health of local sporting programs. The ‘Carnival of the Codes’ was another major activity that stemmed from the community engagement process. At the Carnival of the Codes, 800 children from 4 local primary schools enjoyed a taste of 6 winter sports over 2 days in February. The Carnival was hosted at Picken Oval in Croydon Park, the home ground of the Western Suburbs Magpies. Summer Carnival of the Codes approaches The next Carnival of the Codes, slated for late July, is anticipated to attract even bigger numbers from around 12 primary schools who are set to sample 4 summer sports: touch footy, basketball, cricket and Little Athletics. Get involved Please contact Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club Community Sports/ ClubGRANTS Co-ordinator Paul Kougias on 0427 009 656 or email paulk@chprsl.com.au to find out more. Chevron 11

Stage 2 Update We are continuing to deliver on our commitment to providing value for money products and services to members and the community. Stage 2 of our five-year $15m Masterplan includes 80 additional car spaces, a new-look façade, purpose-built facilities for the CHP School of Hospitality and further expansion of the Anytime Fitness Gym. At the core of this stage will be a new level for the Canterbury Road carpark. In addition to the 80 new car spaces, there will be improvements to security and lighting plus the installation of a new lift to improve accessibility to all levels. It’s also been a long time since the front of the Club has received attention and as part of the carpark upgrade, the Canterbury Rd side of the Club will receive a facelift. This update will give the Club much-needed improvements to its street appeal.

Dedicated Group Fitness and Circuit Training Rooms will be the newest addition to Anytime Fitness Hurlstone Park’s 24/7 gym facility. Anytime Fitness members can exercise at any time of the day or night. Members access the facility using a security-access key/card and can work out in comfort knowing there is always help close by. Please call 9559 0026 for Anytime Fitness membership enquiries. The CHP School of Hospitality is poised for a major expansion to facilitate new on-site skills-based training. Upon completion, the upgraded facility will house a new bar and barista training facilities, enabling students to complete hands-on learning opportunities.
