PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the Spring edition of our Chevron! It is hard to believe that more than half of the year is now behind us and we are turning our minds to spring and, dare I say it, Christmas and the summer period! You will find this Chevron edition full of new and enhanced events and entertainment as we round out a busy and successful year for your Club. I would draw your attention to our Annual General Meeting, set down for 7pm on Tuesday 15th of October. This meeting is an opportunity for members to receive an update on how your club is going and our plans for the future. I would encourage all members to attend the AGM. I have already mentioned the exciting events and entertainment we have lined up for members for the remainder of the year but I would be remiss not to make particular mention of our popular “CHP Kids” events. It is so encouraging to see youngsters and their families using our facilities across a wide range of kid friendly workshops and activities. If you are looking for something to do with the kids or the grandkids next school holidays, I would encourage you to have a look at the line up on pages 21-23. Our Mangement team is always looking for new and better ways in which to reward our loyal members and our '5-Deals to reMEMBER' campaign which concludes in August saw the club provide thousands of members with up to $275 in value simply for renewing their membership or maintaining membership of the club. For those members who took up our offers we trust you enjoyed them and thank you for your continued loyalty. If you missed the boat to renew your membership - never fear, our friendly reception team can rejoin you at any time. Once again I thank all members for their ongoing support of your club and I look forward to seeing you on your next visit.

CEO’S REPORT As we soon head into spring and the warmer months of the year I am delighted with our fresh new line up of activities and promotions we have in stall for members. You will find the following pages full of hibernation busting food and beverage specials, first class entertainment and shows, and exciting new members promotions. As your President has already mentioned our AGM is to commence at 7pm sharp on Tuesday 15th of October in the Auditorium. It would be great to see more members attend this meeting. On pages 27-30 you will find an impressive line up of both free and well priced entertainment to suit live music tastes of all types. Country music fans are in for a real treat when in September our inaugural Canterbury Country Festival is to be held featuring Melinda Schneider in the Auditorium from 8.30pm and an impressive line up in our Outdoor Vibes session commencing at 10am. It will be an entire day of country music talent so dust off your boots and spend the day with us in support of country music. Our annual Members' Christmas Cabarets are to be held on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 November and, like always, interested members should secure their tickets early so as not to miss out. Members should be very proud of the significant contribution your club continues to make in our communities by way of funding to sporting groups, schools, local community organisations and charities each and every month. Of particular mention is a new initiative we are undertaking with Veteran Sport Australia to better understand the role that sport and recreation and the RSL club movement can provide in the context of supporting veterans and their families through sport and recreation. It is hoped this project will unlock the potential of the RSL network in new and innovative ways. It is great to have seen the club so busy over recent months with new faces and many families. I thank you for your loyalty and patronage and look forward to seeing you on your next visit.

John Crowhurst President Dean Thomas Chief Executive Officer

2019 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Notice is hereby given that the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Ltd (ABN 56 000 967 199) is convened for Tuesday 15 October 2019 in the Auditorium at 7pm sharp. chprsl.com.au

1979 AND THE SCHOOL SUPER BAND A HIT! The Club recently kicked off and fully funded a new initiative through our Cooks River Arts and Culture Alliance (CRACA), bringing together professional performers to mentor a School Super Rock Band made up of local students who performed live on stage in front of a packed crowd in the Auditorium on 27 July.

The 10 piece band was selected from local schools, who rehearsed for 8 weeks in the lead up to the night, performing alongside mentors and big name talent, celebrating the Hits of 1979.

6TH ANNUAL ARCHIE WHITE MEMORIAL GOLF CHALLENGE Held at Antill Park Country Golf Club

Former Director and Life Member of the Club, Archie White, an avid and esteemed golfer, is the inspiration behind this annual event. He was well known for his kind, vibrant personality and wondeful (often cheeky) sense of humour. Archie was a proud member from June 1956 - July 2013. Representatives from CHP RSL Golf Club, Bargo Sports Club, Magpie Sports Club, Marrickville RSL Club and a team of Staff/ Directors made up 5 teams of 10 to play for the “Archie” Trophy. These are the Golfing Sub-Clubs under the umbrella of CHP RSL who each year come together in competition, comradery and mateship.

Joe Blazic accepts 2nd place trophy on behalf of Bargo

The format is a golfer from each Sub-Club forms the tee groups hitting off and this year the venue was Antill Park Country Golf Club in Picton. After the game and presentation, a fantastic buffet lunch was held at Bargo Sports Club. The “ARCHIE” Trophy after very close and fierce competition was won by the CHP RSL Golf Team in the Callaway format 74.1 pts, 2nd Bargo Sports 74.545pts, 3rd Staff/ Directors 74.55pts, 4th Marrickville RSL 75pts, 5th Magpie Sports 75.1pts. The raffle raised $465.00 for the Macular Degeneration Foundation Australia. 6

MEET VIRGINIA FUNCTIONS MANAGER

When Virginia Lee first started out at the Club, she was hired for the new bistro that was opening on the bottom level. It was the first time that women were allowed in the downstairs area. And that was 1987! Things have certainly changed in the 33 plus years that Virginia (affectionately known as Gin) has been continuously working at the club. That bistro downstairs is now most definitely her territory in its newest form as the Heritage Function Room, which Virginia adds has “come up beautifully”. We sat down for a coffee and chatted with Gin about her time with the Club. What was the Club like when you first started? I started out as a casual after having the kids, working in the new bistro. The Club has always been exciting. People would line up for miles in both of the bistros at that time. I ended up as supervisor of both of the bistros, working in the fine dining room which is now where the Club Bistro is plus working some of the functions. We used to do dinner theatre 7 nights a week in the Auditorium! “Like myself, Virginia has been with our Club for longer than some of our more recent staff recruits have been on the earth! For over 33 years Virginia has been part of the transformation of our Club and has been responsible for coordinating some the most significant moments in the family lives of our members - celebrations, reflections and bereavements. Virginia has always provided to those members a level of care and professionalism which as a Club we are most proud of. One of the things that I admire most about Virginia is her ability to adapt to changing tastes and trends and to incorporate these into our event experiences without losing the traditional values of service, trust and care for our members. I thank Virginia for more than 3 decades of service and congratulate her on all she has done for our Club and our members” - CEO Dean Thomas

Have you always wanted to do functions? In 1995, I applied for the Functions Coordinator role and I was fortunate enough to get a job I really enjoy. I love what I do, the people you get to meet and the happiness it brings with it. You would have seen a lot of functions and events over the years, what are your fondest memories? We’ve always done good shows. I’m most proud of the fact we created the ACE awards–we’ve sunk the Titanic on the stage and had a plank leading into the Auditorium. We’ve had Star Wars going across the ceiling in the Auditorium. We’ve even had a circus club in there! What makes an event truly special? I always like what a person can bring to their event to make it their own. Especially these days, things like props and backdrops. If it was your event, what would it be like? No budget! Ha, no budget… Honestly, our buffets are amazing. Never disappointing. And I’d have a party band. It’d be a real party. Full of friends and people from all walks of life.
