Personal Statement

Adobe Photoshop / Illustrator / Flash Autocad 2D/3D , Sketch Up Light Wright Wysiwyg(What You See Is What You Get) ETC express System, High End Wholehog System With  great  passion  in  ligh1ng,  I  am  highly  interested  in  the  Master  of  Professional  Studies  in  Interior  Ligh1ng   Design  program  at  the  New  York  School  of  Interior  Design.  I  would  like  to  create  a  more  appropriate  and   aYrac1ve  ligh1ng  environment  in  which  people  can  reside.  I  wish  this  Master’s  program  would  give  me  the   opportunity  to  gain  more  skill,  knowledge,  and  experience. My  experience  with  ligh1ng  design  can  be  traced  back  to  college,  although  my  major  of  study  back  then  was   only  indirectly  relatable.  AdmiYed  to  both  the  Department  of  Architecture  and  the  Department  of  Theatrical   Design,  I  chose  the  laYer,  believing  I  was  able  to  follow  less  conven1onal  paths  and  learning  methodologies  in   order  to  pursue  my  unconstrained  ideas  of  design.  During  my  junior  year,  I  narrowed  my  interests  down  to   ligh1ng  since  it  was  where  my  passion  lies.  Due  to  the  diverse  incoherencies  of  theatrical  ligh1ng  design,  I  was   given  the  opportunity  to  work  on  many  different  kinds  of  projects,  such  as  regular  stage  performance,  avant-‐ garde  theatre  performance,  outdoor  space,  exhibi1on,  and  sta1c  or  dynamic  ligh1ng  environment  designing  and   achieving.  I  have  highly  diversified  hands-‐on  project  experience  with  space,  methods  of  expressions  and   demands.  The  most  significant  take-‐away  from  this  experience  is  my  capability  in  atmosphere  management  and   emo1onal  emphasis,  that  will  1e  the  environment  to  people’s  life.  This,  overall,  builds  the  founda1on  of  my  skill   set  which  will  support  my  future  studies  in  interior  ligh1ng  design,  that  will  be  congruent  with  my  client’s   lifestyle.  A^er  all,  the  purpose  of  interior  illumina1on  is  to  create  a  beYer  environment  for  humans  to  live  and   work  in.     A^er  gradua1on,  I  commiYed  myself  to  professional  ligh1ng  design  projects  by  joining  the  ligh1ng  design   consul1ng  company,  Concept  Ligh1ng  Design  Consultants,  Inc.  (CLDC).  This  company  works  with  architects,   interior  designers,  and  landscape  architects  on  a  wide  range  of  commercial  and  residen1al  projects.   Beyond  my  exis1ng  knowledge  in  this  field,  I  also  have  many  good  quali1es  that  make  me  a  good  candidate   for  this  Master’s  program.  For  instance,  I  love  to  learn  and  use  new  technologies  as  suppor1ng  components  of   my  projects.  Applied  with  great  precision,  this  quality  has  helped  me  enormously  with  my  previous  works  at   CLDC.  In  the  bigger  picture  of  the  architecture  ligh1ng  design  industry,  this  skill  has  brought  me  greater  poten1al   for  career  development  than  previously  an1cipated.  One  example  of  my  success  within  this  industry  was  during  a   project  for  a  museum  exhibi1on  to  improve  their  problema1c  ligh1ng  system.  There  were  glares  from  fixtures   and  unexpected  shadows  everywhere.  Making  things  worse,  there  were  too  many  different  types  of  ligh1ng   equipment.  A^er  an  ini1al  on-‐site  review  followed  by  a  thorough  evalua1on  report,  I  proposed  a  modifica1on   plan  under  great  1me  constraints,  which  was  only  made  possible  by  the  new  technologies  I  was  using.  In  the  end,   I  executed  a  new  ligh1ng  system  for  the  museum  that  sa1sfied  the  client’s  demands  perfectly  and  also  reflected   my  own  aesthe1c  taste,  an  environment  with  cozy  ligh1ng  as  well  as  clear  circula1on.  I  would  most  definitely  be   able  to  u1lize  this  quality,  and  many  others,  in  my  future  studies.   NYSID’s  Master’s  program  in  interior  ligh1ng  design  fits  me  perfectly  as  it  is  a  field  in  which  I  have  made   previous  progress,  and  hope  to  con1nue  to  pursue  in  the  future.  It  offers  the  exact  type  of  skill  set  that  will  allow   me  to  achieve  my  career  goals.  This  program  will  strengthen  my  interior  ligh1ng  designing  skills,  familiarize  me   with  inter/intra-‐industry  rela1ons,  and  deepen  my  understanding  of  this  occupa1on.  My  eventual  career  goal  is   to  become  a  master  ligh1ng  designer  who  can  combine  aesthe1c  values,  cugng-‐edge  technologies  as  well  as   human  engagement  in  his  works,  bringing  new  life  to  the  environment  he  is  crea1ng.  To  achieve  this  goal,  a   Master’s  degree  is  the  most  desirable  path.  I  am  hoping  to  take  this  path  with  NYSID.

Residential apartment building Taipei, Taiwan Façade designed by Norihiko Dan and Associates

Project Wave is located in an old and prosperous neighborhood in Taipei. Since the area is considered noisy, the building focuses on introducing a new view that illuminates a different environment: an environment that is quiet and comfortable for residential purposes. The biggest lighting challenge was to prevent the exterior design from affecting the tones of the interior, but the final plan overcame this challenge with great aesthetic values. The narrow angel LED lights project on the aluminum decks of different lengths on the façade, creating a fluent rhythm like that of the ocean waves but only with lights and shadows.

至恒美 (chii-hun-mei) is a residential unit located in the middle of a business district in Taipei. Following the principle of simplicity, the designer of this project focused on two major tasks: creating quiet and peaceful exterior lighting and delivering aesthetic ground floor and landscape illumination. The tenants of 至恒美 would find the overall environment cozy and comfortable. Additionally, the selection of lighting equipment strongly distinguishes this project from others. All materials used were energy efficient, environmentally friendly and easy to maintain.

聚 (juu) is located in the center of an up-rising business area in Taipei, with lower floors functioning as commercial units and upper floors as residential units. The lighting design evolved around the large balconies of the residential units, the most essential elements of the exterior. A flow of lights connects floors with distinctive functions, bringing commercial and residential units into one harmonious environment. It also fits perfectly into the city scale lighting environment, connecting 聚 to surrounding spaces such as department stores, cinemas and MRT stations.

Ankeng is a residential real estate project built along mountains in the suburb of Taipei. It consists of two villa areas, an apartment building, a country club and a central square garden. The designer of the project focused on details of the architecture and landscape in order to utilize the diversified surface luminosity and color temperatures, creating a layered exterior lighting environment. This design creates a comfortable environment for pedestrians and a sense of rhythm among different project components. But even more importantly, together with the road lightings from the nearby highways, Ankeng’s exterior provides the essential elements to the beautiful skyline of the entire area.

Far Eastern Memorial Hospital is a medical center located in a busy neighborhood in New Taipei City. The project focused on the Hospital’s extension, which is significantly taller than its surroundings. Using the building’s potential, the designer hoped to make the extension a landmark through exterior lighting. To connect with the building’s purpose, the designer also tried to create a relaxing and healing atmosphere with fluent spatial planning. He united diverse areas on the ground floor to create a streamlined space that reduces anxieties that may develop from condense planning.

Health Care building Hsinchu, Taiwan designed by Frances Yeh

Stork Fertility Center is located in the urban area of Hsinchu, providing services of artificial insemination and postpartum care. Thus, the architect used many elements that symbolize life and fertility. In relation to lighting, the designer chose special edition lighting fixtures that match the theme of the Center to deliver the overall dynamic concepts between architecture and space, creating an environment that is both interesting and cozy. Especially focusing on the art displays inside and outdoors, the lighting designer also tried to utilize the lights and shadows to emphasize the underlying aesthetic values. In general, the selection of equipment and materials successfully extends the energy of the Stork Fertility Center during the day into nights.

Chii Lih Hotel is located in the east side of the island of Taiwan, surrounded by beautiful sightseeing attractions and natural ecology. Therefore, the exterior lighting of the hotel acts as a guide for tourists to find their way back at night. Furthermore, in order to minimize the lighting impacts that may affect the nature landscape, the lighting designer simply outlined the fundamental architecture elements and avoided using any highpowered equipment. The atmosphere created an environment with layers, both elegant and cozy.

Lea Lea Hotel is located in Nantou, on the bank of Sun Moon Lake. The exterior of the hotel symbolizes the shape of a cruise, featured by streamlined lineaments and ornaments. Since the surrounding area is quite dark at night, the designer only used exterior lighting to emphasize the roof and ground floor of the hotel. The main body of the building is decorated with lightspots. The lighting plan maintains the identification of the hotel without affecting the nature landscape.

Nanshan High School is a private high school that offers daytime as well as night courses. The school board wanted to create a diversified, energetic, and safe campus environment for its students. In order to achieve their first goal, the lighting designer chose to utilize the vertical space on the façade and install LED lighting systems to create layers. Depending on different events or national holidays, the school will be able to change colors of or even display images its exterior. To achieve the last two objectives , the ground floor was emphasized with stronger lighting displays.

Commercial building, include a mall and hotel Taichung, Taiwan Façade designed by Ray Chen Partners Architects

The Park Land by Splandor is situated in the heart of Taichung and was originally a high-end hotel. Today, it is a synthesized commercial building consisting of a department store and a hotel. With exterior renovation, business owners sought a complete revision of its exterior lighting plan, and a brand new street scale façade to match with the ever-evolving surrounding streetscape. The lighting designer highlighted the lineaments of the building but focused more on creating suitable ambience for commercial spaces. Through abundant use of indirect illumination, he managed to create an outstanding elegance on the street of Taichung that is both modern and unobtrusive.

The Twin Residential Unit is located in New Taipei City, a recently developed area outside of urban Taipei. There is a natural competition in its surroundings as many of the Twin’s near-by buildings are of similar heights. Its exterior lighting designer hoped to let it stand out with high aesthetic values and energy efficiency instead of using brightness and high-powered lighting fixtures. He applied LED strips and indirect illumination techniques extensively on the façade, enhancing the quality of the lighting environment without affecting the interior ambience.

Lighting Designer for Theatrical and Dance Productions

THE OTHER SIDE

Modern Dance TNUA B402 Experimental Theater, Taipei Choreographer: Zheng Hao

The Other Side is a dance production with elements from ancient Greek theatrical styles. Combined with dramatic theatrical stages, the stage lighting required special devices to create effects of flames and starry nights.

A STRANGER OF MINE

Drama Play TNUA Dance Theater, Taipei Director: Tien-Heng Kao

A Stranger of Mine is a live theatre comedy based on a Japanese movie. The biggest lighting challenge was the rotating stage and the complex dynamics between different stage components, which makes it very difficult for static lighting sources to capture.

LOVE LETTERS

Drama Play NTU Artfest, Nation of Taiwan University, Taipei Director: Cheng-Ju Shan

Love Letter is a well known live theatre show based on the lesson of life: “Your loss originates at the exact moment of your gain.” Upon the request of NTU ArtFest, this show was performed on the NTU School of Literature’s outdoor lawn.

SUSPENDING CRYSTAL

Modern Dance Wellspring Theater, Taipei, Taiwan Choreographer: Danceology

Suspending Crystal is a dance production that integrates many multi-media technologies and interactive devices into one complete performance. With mirrors, lighting and digital images, the audience was able to experience an illumination that altered between reality and illusions.

SUSPENDING CRYSTAL

TRISTAN AND ISOLDE

Drama Play TNUA T305 Experimental Theater, Taipei Director: Zhu-Xian Wang

Tristan & Isolde is a live theatre show re-arranged from Wagner’s opera with the same title. It mainly relies on elements from body theatre, and is accompanied by a chamber ensemble. Under an already poetic context, the stage lighting enhances the theatrical background, leaving space for imagination.

TRISTAN AND ISOLDE

CHUNG-YUAN PUTU

Inspired by the Chinese traditional ceremony releasing souls from suffering during Chung-Yuan festival, Chung-Yuan Putu is an original comedy in the form of an entertaining talk show performance. With special effects made possible by stage lighting, the show is transformed into a magical environment.
