You’re Going Places! 2020 | CISAbroad.com
WELCOME! We have a crazy acronym at CIS Abroad: “ISEFY!” What’s it mean, you ask? It means, “I’m So Excited For You!” We say the phrase, “I’m so excited for you” at CIS Abroad almost more than any other, including the phrase, "Who took the last cup of coffee and didn’t start a fresh pot?” (Which is saying something – we run on caffeine here.) Why is this such a common exclamation? Because it’s true. And you can’t fake the truth. We are so excited for YOU to: • Make BANK in your job post-college – ($7,000 more per year)1 • Raise your self-confidence and independent living skills2 • Increase your GPA3 • Expand your curiosity about the world2 We're so excited for you because at CIS Abroad, we’ve all had our lives changed by experiences like you are about to discover. I grew up in rural Ohio and never spent more than two weeks (on vacation) in another country before I lived abroad for six months in Paris. Was I terrified? Yes. Did it change my life? Yes. Would I do it again in a heartbeat? Yes, yes, yes. I joined the Peace Corps, wrote two books, and now am president of a fabulous company. And it all started in the same place where you are now. At the beginning. So, explore this publication. Have a conversation with your parents. Call us up and ask questions. Be bold. Welcome to the rest of your life. It’s gonna be great. LIFE IS A HIGHWAY: The Road to Getting Abroad We all know that life’s a journey full of unknown mystery... but applying for a study or intern experience abroad shouldn’t be. We listen to student feedback to make the application process as easy as possible - no small feat considering you’re getting things in order to live in a new country for a while! Never fear - we’re here to help. There are three basic stages to the application process, all with a bit of a different timetable. We’ll keep you informed of next steps so you’ll always know what’s needed from you - even if it’s just waiting with excitement!
“From the moment I applied, CIS Abroad was thorough, clear, and simple, and their team is responsive, passionate, and caring.” Hanna Fuchs, Ithaca College, Semester in Edinburgh Edinburgh Napier University - Fall 2017
PRO TIP! During this stage, you should also meet with your study abroad/academic advisor and complete any on-campus applications.
STAGE 1: APPLICATION Take a single step forward - start the CIS Abroad application online. It’s SUPER easy (no essay!) and will get you connected to one of our Global Advisors, who can help you do everything from finding the right program to passing your chemistry class. (Just kidding on the chemistry class part.) Our application can be completed easily on a mobile device and should take less than 10 minutes - all you need to know are your address, GPA, and which program you’re applying for. No attachments needed at this stage! Just make sure you apply by the application deadline. BOOM. Life-changing To check out ALL of our application deadlines, see pg 92. experience awaits.
6
CISAbroad.com | 877.617.9090
STAGE 2: PRE-DEPARTURE Level unlocked! Now that your application is in, things can really start moving. You’ll meet your Program Coordinator, who’s spent time in the location you’re headed to - so ask them your most pressing questions on your welcome call. There’s a lot to get done and a few deadlines to juggle, so students who keep after it are the most successful. Here’s a list of what you’ll be completing during this stage: •
Financial aid advising
•
•
Enrollment paperwork, like course selection, health info, on-campus approvals, and more
Travel logistics and support
•
Visa application
•
CIS Abroad LIVE Orientation with your Program Coordinator
•
Setting up medical/accident insurance
•
Meeting payment deadlines (we’ll remind you!)
“I couldn’t have asked for a better study abroad experience. CIS Abroad walked me through all the steps of obtaining my study visa and put up with my constant questions and worrying. I couldn’t have felt more comfortable being in a foreign environment with the staff of CIS Abroad by my side.” Carly Ristuccia, Plymouth State University, Semester on the Italian Coast - Spring 2017
PRO TIP! Visas are very important - basically the formal OK from the country that you’re allowed to be there. Depending on how long you stay and where, different visas are required.
STAGE 3: ON-SITE EXPERIENCE All of your hard work has paid off time to fly! Your amazing on-site experience begins with airport pickup - nothing like feeling cared for after a long flight. Your Site Director will host an on-site orientation with other CIS Abroad participants, so you’ll get to connect with other participants soon after landing. A university orientation will help you get familiar with campus and how to get to class. Here are the key components of all our on-site experiences.

FUNDING YOUR ABROAD EXPERIENCE Excited to study abroad but not sure if you can afford it?
We’ve created a step-by-step guide to help you find the most funding for your program. Start with step No. 1, and remember there are hundreds of study abroad scholarships out there, and no limit to the number you can apply for and receive!
1. CHOOSE A PROGRAM Find the CIS Abroad program that’s the best fit for you: Semester, Intern, TEFL, Summer, or January Did you know? Program location, duration, credits, and housing options all affect program cost.
2. GET STARTED ON A BUDGET
While program fees are part of what you’ll spend during your time abroad, you’ll need to factor in additional expenses to your budget. These include passport fees, round-trip airfare, food (if you aren’t on a meal plan), extra travel expenses, visa fees, and other miscellaneous costs. Did you know? The budget worksheets on our website will help you get an idea of the true “all-in” cost. Check them out at CISAbroad.com/budget STILL CONFUSED? WE GOT YOU. Watch 5 Steps to Use your Financial Aid for Study Abroad on our YouTube Channel. YouTube.com/CISAbroad
8
CISAbroad.com | 877.617.9090
3. MEET WITH FINANCIAL AID Schedule an appointment with your school’s study abroad or academic advisor, as well the financial aid office, as soon as you can. Knowing how much aid will travel with you is key to determining affordability! Ask: • Does my home university allow institutional aid to be used abroad? • Does my home university have a direct billing arrangement with CIS Abroad? If so, your financial aid will go to your school, and they’ll pay CIS Abroad for the program fee. • Ask what information each office will need (and by when) to help facilitate the process
4. APPLY FOR GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS CIS Abroad offers several different scholarships and grants. Read on to learn about even more funding opportunities, and visit our website for a detailed list. CISAbroad.com/scholarships

“Kyoto is, without a doubt, the cultural center of Japan and arguably one of the most exceedingly beautiful cities on earth. I had high expectations upon arrival of the beauty of the land, architecture, and infrastructure of Japan as a whole, and yet I was still surprised. Being immersed in that alone felt surreal.” Luke Pastore, University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth, Semester in Japan - Fall 2017
INCLUSION & ACCESS ABROAD
High Financial Need Students
Students who identify with a religious/ spiritual practice outside of the majority in their host country may need extra support to find resources abroad to maintain their spiritual practice. Our advisors work with students to help them understand their host country's climate and what support is available.
LGBTQIA+ Students
Students with mobility issues, learning disabilities, and mental illness study abroad with us every year. Our knowledgeable advising staff knows our host institutions well and can advise on what accommodations are offered.
Studying abroad as an LGBTQIA+ or gender BT N QIA + FRIE nonconforming student brings an additional set of challenges. Look for our LGBTQIA+-friendly sticker on programs as you browse, indicating that a program took our LGBTQIA+-friendliness survey AND has positive student reviews in terms of campus climate and support. LG
CIS Abroad awards grants and scholarships to 70% of accepted students, and we are known for high value and affordable prices. We support our students and parents by providing scholarships, payment plans, and offer flexibility in program packages.
Students from Minority Religious Groups
Many of our participants are the first in their family to attend college. We have several first-generation college students on staff that know firsthand the challenges that face many of our students. During both the application process and time on site, first-generation college students should feel at ease asking even the most basic of questions of our staff – we're here to help!
LY
Students who are underrepresented in higher education in the United States may find the same trend while studying abroad. We know that it takes extra initiative to reach out and ask questions. Know that our staff is equipped with tools to guide students from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.

MORE RESOURCES OUR COMMITMENT TO GENERATION STUDY ABROAD
CIS Abroad joined the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad initiative to help more Americans gain international experience through study abroad programs. As a commitment partner, CIS Abroad has pledged to increase knowledge about and access to education abroad for LGBTQIA+ students.
If you’re looking for more resources, look no further. For an extensive list, check out CIS Abroad’s Diversity page at www.CISAbroad.com/diversity. We’ve got some of the best right here. Generation Study Abroad Generation Study Abroad is an initiative, launched in 2014, of the Institute of International Education (IIE) to mobilize resources and commitments with the goal of doubling the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade.
Jordan Xavier Washington, UMass Amherst Semester on the Gold Coast - Spring 2018

Fall semester dates abroad are easy to match up with Fall/Trimester dates in the US. If your only time to go abroad is during Winter and Spring/Trimester, you’ll need to get a little creative when considering program dates. For example, you may want to consider one of our January program options and add on an internship at the end to create the perfect Winter Quarter/Trimester option. For more info on how to build your own personal study abroad program that meets your unique requirements, speak with an advisor sooner rather than later!

THE FINE PRINT
(AKA POLICIES)
The following policies and procedures, established by the Center for International Studies (CIS Abroad), are important to you as a candidate seeking to study/intern abroad. Reading and understanding them are crucial. If you have any questions about the policies and procedures, please do not hesitate to contact us for a thorough explanation! Once accepted to a CIS Abroad program, you will receive the complete CIS Abroad policy handbook. Thanks for reading!
Transfer of Academic Credit and Records Ideally, your study abroad program will allow you to take courses abroad that will fulfill graduation requirements at your home university. Because CIS Abroad works only with recognized institutions, there should be no difficulty arranging the transfer of credit back to your home school. That said, advanced planning is vital to ensure that both your home university and your host institution have approved your course selection before your departure. As part of the application process, CIS Abroad requires that you receive written approval from your school’s study abroad advisor, academic advisor, or academic dean for all the courses you wish to take on the course selection section of the application. In order to transfer credit back to your home institution, the courses you take abroad must meet the requirements of your home school. To determine transferability, your study abroad advisor (or academic advisor) will want to see descriptions of the courses you intend to take. CIS Abroad can provide these details to you, electronically in most cases, or in printed form. After you have completed your internship or study abroad experience and have made all of the appropriate payments, your home institution will be issued a performance evaluation (internship abroad only) or official transcript from the host school (study abroad only). This will normally be issued about 2-3 months after completion of the program. You should expect this process to take longer than in the U.S. Please keep in mind that your records will not be released if you have any outstanding financial obligations to the host institution or CIS Abroad.
Refund Policy
Program Fee Coverage
Because CIS Abroad makes financial commitments on your behalf well in advance of the program start date, refunds can only be made in certain cases. For a full refund of the study abroad program fee, less any deposits, cancellation must be made to CIS Abroad in writing no later than 60 days before the start date of the program to which you have applied. Should you decide to defer to another study term, any deposits paid may be transferred to that term, but will not be refunded. For a full refund of the internship abroad program fee, less any deposits, cancellation must be made to CIS Abroad in writing before the internship placement interview.
The program fees listed for all CIS Abroad programs include:
Passport and Visa In all countries, you will be required to possess a current passport. If you do not have a passport, you should begin the process soon, as it may take up to six weeks. If you already have a passport, please make sure that it has not expired and will be valid for at least six months after the completion of your program. With regard to visas and permits of stay, CIS Abroad will provide you with the appropriate instructions and counseling as part of the pre-departure services offered. Be advised that you may incur some fees in the visa application process, and you will need to pay these directly to the issuing consulate. If you are not a citizen of the United States, please check with the embassy of the country you intend to study in to determine if you will need a visa during your studies.
Full-time tuition and fees Housing Medical and accident insurance CIS Abroad support services before, during, and after the program Academic advising Financial aid counseling Assistance with travel arrangements Pre-departure orientation Airport pick-up University orientation On-site support Official transcript Program fees do not include: Airfare Housing damage deposit Meals (unless otherwise specified) Visa and passport fees Spending money Books and supplies (unless otherwise specified) "CIS Abroad does an amazing job helping you apply, prepare, live abroad, and even return home. The entire experience feels like you're on your own still, and you gain a lot of independence, but it's comforting to know CIS Abroad staff is always ready to lend a helping hand."
