On Our Cover Our 2017 Essentials cover photo was taken by Patrick Rogers, who was born & raised in Nassawadox. Growing up under the tutelage of his grandfather, Grayson Rogers, he was 2017-2018 taught the value of what the Shore has to offer from the bay, ocean, and mainland. One day hunting with his Uncle Paul on the barrier islands he watched him shoot a black duck. While his uncle was walking the marsh with his duck in hand, Patrick took a quick picture with an old point and shoot camera. It was at that moment when he saw the picture that he understood what the Eastern Shore meant to his grandfather and how much it meant to him. From then on he felt that he needed to capture her and her story for everyone to see and share!!

COMMUNITY Welcome to the Eastern Shore...where America took root

“With the past as our launch, we will motor through the future on a strong vessel, dedicated to service to the Eastern Shore community.”

– The Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce Fifty Years of Service 1953-2003

After the settlement of Jamestown in 1607, Capt. John Smith explored the Eastern Shore of Virginia and scribed this famous first impression: “Heaven and earth seemed never to have agreed better to frame a place for man’s commodious and delightful habitation.” Eastern Shore residents, both native and adoptive, feel a deep sense of pride and tradition inherent in being part of a place where America had its beginnings. They know “their Shore” was explored and settled very early in the country’s colonization by the English-speaking people of Jamestown and that the Eastern Shore was one of the original eight counties in Virginia. This land between two waters is sprinkled with quaint towns of picturesque streets lined with historic homes, museums, art galleries, and shops. The countryside features miles of farmland, as well as residential developments. The Shore’s natural beauty, enhanced by a beautiful state park and two national wildlife refuges, offers a refreshing change of pace. Camping, bird and wildlife watching, recreational boating, biking and hiking, fishing, hunting, and beach activities are but a few ways to experience our natural surroundings. The Shore beckons visitors to leave city life behind. Take time to enjoy antique and gift shops, country auctions, seasonal festivals, and old fashioned carnivals. Relax in our bed and breakfasts, indulge yourself in our unique restaurants, and submerge yourself in our way of life.

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a peninsula extending 70 miles from the Maryland state line south to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. To the east are the “seaside” marshes, shallow bays, and barrier islands bordering the Atlantic Ocean. On the west, or “bayside,” are a variety of creeks, large and small, flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. The peninsula is divided into two counties: Accomack County to the north and Northampton County to the south. Both counties have been involved with water-related activities since John Smith’s arrival in 1608. Commercial oystering and clamming, crabbing, and fishing, as well as recreational saltwater fishing, provide a viable economy. In addition, large vegetable farming operations have given the Shore the nickname “the East Coast’s salad bowl.” Another important part of the agricultural economy is the poultry industry. Numerous commercial chicken farms supply the Shore’s two large processing plants with products. Because two of the largest economic industries on the Eastern Shore are agriculture and seafood, residents of the Shore are aware of the fragile nature of our environment and strive to maintain an ecological balance. Farming both the land and the water has shaped the culture of the Shore for more than 400 years. Conservation agencies such as the Nature Conservancy and the Virginia Eastern Shore Land Trust have protected more than 100,000 acres from development and for wildlife habitat.

EXPLORING OUR TOWNS Travelers venturing across the Chesapeake Bay BridgeTunnel find themselves transported from a metropolitan, traffic-congested existence to another world, one that is quiet and relaxing. U.S. 13 is the central pathway bisecting the Eastern Shore. Curious travelers venture off the highway into intriguing towns that are the backbone of the Shore. Many others dot the seaside and bayside of the two-county area. So, let us take you on a tour starting at the southern tip of the peninsula.

Cape Charles The first major populated area that visitors encounter as they travel north, Cape Charles is located on the bayside and was originally settled in the 1880s as part of the Pennsylvania Railroad expansion connecting the metropolitan areas of New York and Pennsylvania to Florida. It now has the distinction of being home to the first resort in the United States to feature both Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus Signature® courses. The town boasts a beautiful community beach and fishing pier, as well as a main street offering a multitude of shops and eateries to satisfy everyone in your caravan. Visit capecharles.org to learn more.

Cheriton Moving over to the seaside, Cheriton, originally called “Sunnyside,” is a small, close-knit community with residents who care deeply about preserving the historic nature of their 1886 small town. Beautiful homes and churches line the two main streets. Several small businesses are located in Cheriton. For more information on this quaint little town, take a look at www.cheriton.esva.net.

Eastville

Exmore Our final stop in Northampton County, the once booming railroad town of Exmore, is now home to several antique and retail shops, pharmacies, professional offices, beauty salons, restaurants, bakeries, auto repair shops, and well known hotels. You can stroll through a few thrift shops or spend the afternoon with the kids at the town park. Each September, vendors flock to the streets to showcase their wares during the Community Yard Sale. Antique cars, trucks, and motorcycles are on display during this event. For the exact date and other happenings within Exmore, visit exmore.org.

Onley Now we drift into Accomack County, and our first stop here is the town of Onley. Once known as “Crossroads,” this town was basically a connector. Wachapreague was a bustling seaside town, Onancock was the Chesapeake bayside port ,and Accomac was the center of local government. Onley’s claim to fame was connecting these three towns, but with the opening of the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad, the town became the marketplace for local watermen and farmers to sell their harvests to dealers who would then ship their purchases up north to the cities. No longer was Onley a connector...it became a destination. Much has changed since then, but Onley remains one of the primary centers of commerce on the Shore. This community has more than 60 small and large retail businesses. You will find plenty of places to shop and plenty of places to tempt your taste buds. Onley is also the home of Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and Cancer Center along with a medical office building housing doctors’ offices and physical therapy facilities. Find out more when you visit www.townofonley.org.

Pulling into Eastville is truly a step back in time. Beautiful homes with majestic oaks and traditional Southern porches welcome you. The seat of Northampton County since 1680, Eastville is home to the courthouse containing the oldest continuous court records in the United States, which date back to 1632. Step into the land records room and you can view Daniel Boone’s signature, as well as actual Indian signatures. Stroll the courthouse green and visit the Debtors’ (Except maybe when you have to go home.) Prison, as well as other historical Cottages • Campers • Cabins • Wooded Tent Sites • On-site Trailer Rentals • 50-amp Big Rig sites buildings. who owned most of the land. It wasn’t until the late 1880s that the town became known as Accomac. The town’s most famous building is the historic Debtor’s Prison, originally erected in 1782 as a home for the jailer. In 1824, it was made into a prison for debtors, and is part of the Walking Tour of Accomac. Because Accomac is the county seat, it is home to county government offices, courthouses, attorneys, and school administration. Learn more at www.accomac.org.

Parksley

757.336.6161

Parksley was founded in the 1880s and “was the first town on the Shore whose homes were lit by electricity, and one of the first places on the peninsula to see automobiles, indoor bathrooms, and permanent waves,” according to Off 13 by Kirk Mariner. Also a railroad town, Parksley is the home of the Eastern Shore Railway Museum. The town is located on the bayside of U.S. 13 and is known for its numerous large Victorian homes, five and dime store, a variety of restaurants, a year round farmers market, bridal shop, seafood market and a public park which is also home to the Eastern Shore Street Hockey League. You can find more info at www.parksley.com.

Chincoteague Island

9LUJLQLD·VRQO\UHVRUWLVODQG Onancock Founded in 1680, and chartered by the English House of Burgesses for the purpose of importing and exporting cargo, Onancock remains today as one of the larger towns on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Town streets are lined with shops and restaurants within a pleasant walk from the marina. The current town park has been called a “slice of old-time America,” complete with a traditional old-fashioned community ice cream social every July. In December, the Onancock Christmas Homes Tour & Music Festival will give one an inside look at historic residences, churches, and Ker Place while enjoying music of the season.

Wachapreague The seafarer types will love this seaside quaint town whose name loosely translates to “city by the sea.” It was founded by Nathaniel Bradford in 1662 and quickly became a port for transporting goods. Soon thereafter, it became a tourist destination for hunters and fisherman. To this day, it remains a busy site for fishing charter boats, Virginia Institute of Marine Science research vessels, and the annual Wachapreague Carnival. Explore more by visiting wachapreague.org.

Accomac The county seat of Accomack–note the different spellings–Accomac is a small, quiet community of restored historic homes. When the town was established by the state in 1786, it was named Drummondtown after the man 6

Chincoteague Island is located on the seaside between the mainland of the Eastern Shore and the barrier island of Assateague. The community boasts a large population of summer visitors, as well as a sizable number of yearround residents. The island has its own school, parks, and several churches. The most popular event is the annual Pony Swim, Auction, and Carnival, which celebrated its 90th year in 2015. The Pony Swim and Auction take place the last Wednesday and Thursday in July. The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Seafood Festival in May and the Oyster Festival in October. There is also an annual Chili Chowder Cook-off sponsored by the local fire department and a Blueberry Festival in July. The town’s proximity to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island also draws bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts year round. Tourism info can be found at www.ChincoteagueChamber.com.

Tangier Island The adventurer can travel by boat to Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay. Settled in the 1680s, this isolated stretch of sand is still inhabited by descendants of the original settlers. Only 2.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, the island’s primary connection with the mainland is the daily mail boat landing. A passenger ferryboat runs from Onancock to the island during the summer, or one may fly from the Accomack County Airport near Melfa into the Tangier airport. Walk through the town, ride a bike, or rent a golf cart, all excellent ways to see the island. Try seafood at one of their restaurants or stay overnight at a bed-and-breakfast. EXPLORING HISTORIC HAMLETS OUR TOWNS Silver Beach “All that glitters is not gold.” And that’s no big deal for folks who live on the shores of the glittering waters of Silver Beach. This little gem of a community is about ten miles west of Highway 13 at the end of a long winding road through farmland and modest homes hearkening back to an earlier time. It dangles at the end of Occahannock Neck Road like a pearl pendant sculpted by the waters of the Chesapeake Bay--ever changing. Although the shoreline has been eroded by storms and the lapping waves of the Chesapeake, in many ways the community itself has not changed at all—and that’s what people like about it. The expansive view of the Chesapeake Bay is awe-inspiring. The property that is now Silver Beach was once owned by the Kellam and Prettyman families who began to sell lots for a reasonable price in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Small summer cottages began to spring up, and soon the little community hummed with life. Four of the original cottages are still standing, but most others have been replaced. At one time there was a pavilion and a snack shop run by the Kellam family, some of the descendants of whom still live there. Although there is no longer a public beach, homeowners do have access to a beach on the Nassawadox Creek within walking distance of most homes. There is no longer a place to launch a boat at Silver Beach so most people go to Bayford to put their boats in the water. There are rental cottages available, and from Memorial Day to Labor Day the area is alive with activity--fishing, boating, campfires, sing-alongs and even a regular outdoor church service as “campers” renew acquaintances. Each Sunday, homeowners and visitors gather outdoors in what they refer to as “God’s Original Sanctuary” for a worship service. These services are coordinated by two families, the Turners and the Walters. The highlight of the summer is the annual Fourth of July parade. Adults and children alike dress up in patriotic colors and proudly celebrate their heritage. Shades of “the good old days.”

Bobtown In April of 1960, the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club was founded when 125 acres of land was acquired near Bobtown. The eighteen hole golf course was designed by architect Eddie Ault and the 1967 Virginia State Open Golf Tournament was held there with Former PGA Champion, Chandler Harper, taking home the trophy. The Club overlooks beautiful Pungoteague Creek and offers its members a spectacular golf course, pool, boating facility and exceptional fine dining experiences. Since the early 1800s, Bobtown has played a major role in the education of our residents. Public education was not always free. The wealthier families of the Eastern Shore would send their children to private schools such as the Margaret Academy in Bobtown. Margaret Ann Onley, a resident of Pungoteague, passed away in 1785 and through

her Last Will and Testament, she left a piece of property to be used as a girls and boys school for both Accomack and Northampton counties. The General Assembly granted a charter in 1786 to establish the Margaret Academy and in 1807, the Academy accepted its first students. Henry A. Wise, who became the Governor of Virginia, attended the Academy around 1816. The Academy’s decline occurred during the Civil War. It became the barracks for the Union Army and was left in horrible condition after the war. With no funds to rehabilitate the structure, the Academy was relocated to the Town of Onancock and later met its demise when the Onancock Public High School opened. Currently, Bobtown is home to the Pungoteague Elementary School, which, according to Kirk Mariner’s guidebook, OFF 13, sits across the street from a private residence that was once the girls’ dormitory of the old Margaret Academy. So, Margaret Ann Onley’s desire to provide education to the residents of the Eastern Shore continues to be fulfilled in Bobtown.

Modest Town Modest Town was named after two ladies who operated a boarding house there during the 1800s. The ladies were well known for being quite prim and proper and therefore, their boarding house for stagecoach travelers was managed under a very strict and proper code. The neighboring hamlet of Helltown, now called Nelsonia, did not carry such a stellar reputation. The difference in the two locations was profound. Modest Town Baptist Church was established in 1829, while Helltown’s main attraction was a rowdy tavern for wagoneers and crews building the railroad. As is the case with many historical tales, good character prevails. Helltown disappeared in the late 1800s when Spencer R. Nelson purchased most of the real estate there and renamed the village Nelsonia. Modest Town still stands strong and was featured on TV’s “History Detectives” in 2009 when a headstone located at the Modest Town Baptist Church cemetery was dedicated to William Taylor White (1837-1852), “the boy in the iron coffin.” In 1852, while studying in Washington, D.C., Mr. White passed away and was buried in one of the local cemeteries there in D.C. That cemetery was later re-located but Mr. White’s grave was unintentionally left behind. Then, in 2005, construction crews were excavating to replace a gas line and discovered the unmarked grave. The body, inside an iron coffin with a glass window, was unidentified but was perfectly preserved. The Smithsonian Institution stepped in and performed a two-year study and the body was identified through DNA. The teenaged decedent was William Taylor White, a native of Accomack County. Mr. White’s body remains at the Smithsonian but the stone at the Modest Town Baptist Church cemetery honors his life. After nationwide television recognition, Modest Town, in keeping with its name, remains modest. The population as of the 2010 census was 149.

EDUCATION Academic opportunities abound on the Eastern Shore, ranging from pre-school to post-graduate degree programs. The Eastern Shore is home to public schools in Accomack and Northampton counties providing pre-kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school curricula. Accomack County is especially proud of its STEM Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), which challenges students with design activities and research projects partnering with the Eastern Shore Community College, NASA, and the Orbital Corporation. Northampton County boasts an award winning robotics team as well as a one-on-one technology initiative which puts laptops in the hands of all students in grades 9-12. There are also several private and parochial schools providing a variety of educational options from pre-K through high school. Eastern Shore Community College is located on a 115-acre campus on U.S. Route 13 south of Melfa. A vital community asset, ESCC offers a wide variety of programs ranging from general educational development through associate degrees. A partnership between ESCC and Old Dominion University’s Distance Learning program enables students to complete bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees at ODU sites in ESCC and Wallops Island. The Workforce Development Services Division of ESCC focuses on delivering cost-effective training and education to the Shore’s local businesses, governmental agencies, and professional organizations. Certain training and certifications once required employees to venture off the Shore, incurring travel expenses and employee time off that directly affected the company’s bottom line. Now, employees can receive the necessary training locally, enabling Shore businesses and agencies to be more profitable and more competitive. The unique natural history and location of the Eastern Shore has drawn several major colleges and universities to the area. The University of Virginia’s $2.5 million Anheuser-Busch Coastal Research Center is located on 42 acres in Oyster. A subsidiary of the College of William & Mary, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science research facility in Wachapreague has become internationally recognized for its shellfish research.

Virginia Tech is another well-known presence on the Shore, funding and operating the Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Painter. The center sits on a 226-acre farm that hosts an office complex, laboratories, equipment buildings, garages, a greenhouse, graduate student housing, large freshwater pond, and woodland area.

Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital From its beginnings in 1928 as a 25-bed facility, known then as the Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital, what Shore residents know today as Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital has served the health care needs of the people of the Eastern Shore. Ensuring convenient local access to services is a critical factor in Riverside’s goal of improving health by finding and treating disease in its earliest stage, and ongoing investments in leading edge technology mean that all but the most specialized tests can be performed on the Shore. Riverside’s investment in electronic medical records has improved access to health information for care providers while keeping the information secure. In addition, patients themselves can communicate electronically with their Riverside physicians 24 hours a day for routine requests and information such as prescription refills and lab results. On February 24, 2017, RSMH moved from Nassawadox to their new medical campus in Onley. Included on the campus are a 14

MUSEUMS & OTHER HISTORIC SITES The Eastern Shore of Virginia has a rich history which dates back to the early 1600s and includes tales of love, war, and business. This little peninsula played a big role in U.S. history including battles in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and an agricultural industry that helped to feed the country through the Great Depression. It has seen its ups and downs but it has a big heart that thrives to this day. Capturing moments like these are the historical sites listed below, which include the museum partners of the Eastern Shore Museum Network. These museums and other places of interest dot the countryside and recount stories of the railroad business, watermen, colonial times, and even the famous pony Misty. FOOD The Eastern Shore is truly a chef’s playground. The land provides potatoes, tomatoes, various greens, and other vegetables while the water delivers fresh oysters, clams, blue crabs and many species of fish. Eastern Shore farmers and watermen have been working the land and sea for generations. The Shore is known for family farms producing a variety of vegetables and grains as well as oyster farms on both the bayside and the seaside. Many individuals grow and harvest oysters right out their backdoors in the creeks that border their properties. Not only do the oysters taste great, but the oyster beds renew and preserve our waterways. Oysters are the Chesapeake Bay’s best natural filters and provide a habitat for fish and other bay creatures. As one would imagine, the abundance of crops has led to the perfection of Eastern Shore dishes. From crab steams at firehouses to fried oyster sandwiches at carnivals to chicken salad luncheons at churches, Eastern Shore favorites are plentiful and the food is fantastic. Many events on the Shore highlight local tasty treats from oyster roasts to BBQs. In February, The Barrier Island Center in Machipongo hosts an old fashioned oyster roast. Roasted, steamed, in chowder, or raw, the

oysters are all good! For more information, go to www. barrierislandscenter.org. In April, YMCA Camp Silver Beach hosts their Beach Bash Oyster Roast with proceeds from the event giving deserving children a magical, funfilled week of summer camp. Visit www.ymcashr.org/ beachbash for more details and to purchase tickets on line. Chincoteague Island is home to two festivals, one in the spring and one in the fall. Both allow you to enjoy world-renowned clams and oysters. See www. chincoteaguechamber.com for more information. Our community get-togethers are wonderful, but take pleasure in Eastern Shore cooking by visiting any one of our grand eating establishments that pepper the Shore. From family diners to waterfront restaurants, there is a place for every appetite. For a variety of restaurants in our region, see the Chamber Membership Directory in the back of this publication. Staying in for the night? Stop by one of the Shore’s local fish markets, farmers markets and/or grocery stores to pick up the ingredients you need to try one of the recipes we have provided in this section. These recipes were developed using the fresh local bounty of the Eastern Shore and are courtesy of a local food blog… www.thekitchenisland.com.

CRABBY BAKED OYSTERS INGREDIENTS 1 dozen oysters, shucked but left in the shell 1 package chopped, frozen spinach (10 oz.) 1 tbsp olive oil 1 shallot, minced by Photo owler F Wayde

1 teaspoon garlic powder 4 oz. cream cheese, cubed 1 cup parmesan cheese 1 cup lump crab meat 8 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Get your oven preheated to 350°F 2. Now, cook your spinach according to the package directions. When finished, drain the spinach and press with a clean towel or paper towels to remove as much water as possible. 3. Heat a 9” sauté or frying pan over medium heat and add your olive oil. 4. Add the shallot and sauté for about 1 minute. The shallot should be soft but not brown. 5. Add the spinach and then garlic powder to the pan. Stir to combine the items. 6. Next, toss in the cream cheese and continue to stir until the cheese is melted and incorporated into the spinach mixture. It should resemble creamed spinach at this point. 7. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the parmesan cheese. Set aside. 8. Arrange the oysters on a sheet pan or any oven safe dish and top each oyster with about a tablespoon of crab meat. For smaller oysters, you will use less crab meat. 9. Evenly distribute the spinach mixture on top of the crabmeat. Try to completely cover the oyster. 10. Top each oyster with about a teaspoon of the crumbled bacon.

Nature Preserves Virginia Coast Reserve The Nature Conservancy Virginia’s Eastern Shore is home to the longest expanse of coastal wilderness remaining on the eastern seaboard. The conservancy’s Virginia Coast Reserve protects 14 undeveloped barrier islands. Most islands are open to the public for low-impact, non-commercial, recreational day use. Pets, motorized vehicles, camping and campfires are prohibited. Four of the islands are closed at all times. For further information, search online Virginia Coast Reserve / The Nature Conservancy or call (757) 442-3049. Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Virginia DCR was established in the 1980s. Their mission, to protect some of the most significant natural areas, enhance natural and recreational resources on the Shore through land management planning, funding, education and regulation. Natural area dedication works in much the same way as a conservation easement by placing legally binding restrictions on future activities on a property. The Natural Area Preserve System includes examples of some of the rarest natural communities and species habitats in Virginia. Some are lands owned by local governments, universities, private citizens and The Nature Conservancy (a private conservation organization). On the Eastern Shore of Virginia, there are seven DCR owned or shared ownership sites such as Savage Neck, Magothy Bay, Parkers Marsh and Wreck Island. For further information, visit www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural_heritage/ natural_area_preserves/.

MAKING THE SHORE YOUR HOME ONE CULTURE, TWO COUNTIES Virginia’s Eastern Shore has been home to pirates, farmers, fishermen, artists, and well-heeled travelers. If you have made our shores your home, or are contemplating doing so, the following information concerning items from dog tags to taxes will be helpful. The Commonwealth of Virginia’s portion of the Eastern Shore stretches from the Chesapeake Bay at the southern tip to Maryland’s border at the northern edge. It is composed of two counties: Northampton County, from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to just north of the town of Exmore, and Accomack County, from there to the Maryland border. When first settled by the English in the 1600s, the area was referred to as Accawmacke. In the early days of the colony, the largest population was located at the southern end of the peninsula. By 1663, the area was divided into two counties: Northampton to the south and Accomack to the north. The county seats, Accomac for Accomack County and Eastville for Northampton County, are combinations of government, attorney, and real estate offices; small shops; restaurants; and businesses. Government officials are ready to help with specific concerns regarding zoning regulations, flood insurance, building codes and inspections; or from home, you can consult each county’s web site for yourself. In addition to the counties, there are numerous incorporated towns. It’s possible that these may have their own zoning and related ordinances. For instance, because the entire island is on the federal flood plain, Chincoteague has some unique issues from zoning to insurance. Properties purchased for vacation rentals also may have additional regulations. Be sure to check both county and local governments concerning their individual requirements.

The Joyce Marie II Tangier-Onancock Ferry Look around the wharf in Onancock at 10 a.m. or 5 p.m. from the first weekend in May through the first weekend in October. Unless it’s a Monday, you’ll see the Joyce Marie II there loading or unloading passengers. Supervising the operation is Capt. Mark Crockett, a tall, rugged man with a ready smile, an engaging twinkle in his eyes, and a manner that inspires confidence. With Crockett’s steady hand at the helm, the 36’ long Maine built fiberglass lobster boat, similar to a Chesapeake Bay Deadrise, has been making her twice daily voyage from Onancock to Tangier Island for the past eight years. Being on the water is nothing new for Crockett, a Tangier native. He spent decades earning his living as a traditional waterman, harvesting the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. But when a previous ferry service between Onancock and Tangier shut down, Crockett made a career change. He decided to give up a physically demanding life which required rising well before dawn in exchange for being able to sleep in a little later as a charter boat captain. He says he doesn’t miss the early rising, and it’s a choice he’s never regretted. “I love what I do. I enjoy meeting the people,” the captain of the Joyce Marie II says. Take a cruise with him, and you’ll see proof of that. Likely as not, you’ll find one or more of his passengers up front in the cabin with him enjoying a friendly conversation as Crockett chats and keeps a watchful eye on their course. The trip between Tangier and Onancock on the mainland takes approximately an hour. Weather can affect the schedule somewhat, but both Crockett and the Joyce Marie II (which is named after Crockett’s wife) are capable of making the crossing safely even in stormy conditions. Rates for the Onancock-Tangier run are reasonable. An adult ticket costs only $25 for a daily round trip or $30 for an overnight trip; one way tickets are $20. Children ages 6-12 travel round trip for $10, and tickets for those 5 and under are only $5. You can just show up at the dock in Onancock and book passage on a first come, first serve basis or call ahead to reserve tickets. During its operational season from May to October, the Tangier Onancock Ferry runs every day except Monday, although it does operate on Memorial Day and Labor Day Mondays. The ferry service is a true family owned and run business, with Crockett handling operations on the water and his wife Joyce fielding calls and handling scheduling. In addition to the seasonal ferry service, Crockett and the Joyce Marie II are available year round by request for private charter service on the Bay. To contact the Tangier Onancock Ferry call 757891-2505, e-mail tangierferry@gmail.com, or visit them online at www.tangierferry.com. 38

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY GOVERNMENT Northampton County is the southern 35 miles of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. This portion of the peninsula is connected to the “mainland” by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a 17.6-mile “shore to shore” tunnel and bridge toll road opened in 1964. Historic townships contain buildings that speak to more than 350 years of architectural design. Northampton County was one of the original eight Virginia shires established in 1634. In 1663, the Eastern Shore of Virginia was divided into two counties. Northampton moved the county seat several times before settling in the town of Eastville. Records dating from 1632 are accessible in the present clerk’s office. These records hold the distinction of being the oldest continuous records in the United States. Northampton County (estimated population 12,389) encompasses approximately 696 square miles, of which 357 are land.

Profile: New Ravenna Sara Baldwin grew up on Virginia’s rustic Eastern Shore, on her family’s farm. “From childhood, we were surrounded by nature, and all the inspiration that nature creates, from childhood, and we were encouraged to express ourselves artistically, using whatever we could find in our environment. It was an idyllic upbringing, certainly for an artist. We had to be both respectful of, and resourceful with, our surroundings, and these principles have guided me throughout my years as a designer and a businessperson. I feel very lucky to have roots and to live in a place where beauty and inspiration seem inexhaustible.” In 1984, Baldwin set out to study fine arts at the University of Pennsylvania, where she took her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and trained rigorously as a fine arts painter. It was here that she made her first mosaic design, a mural of Eve in the Garden of Eden. When she returned to the Eastern Shore in 1990, the thought of a mosaic company called New Ravenna seemed a pipe dream. She took a chance and launched the small cottage industry with a handful of artisans. Twenty-seven years later, New Ravenna employs more than 115 people and spans three city blocks in historic Exmore, Virginia–and leads the nation in designing and manufacturing custom mosaics in stone and glass with materials imported from across Eurasia and the Americas. She also started Sara Baldwin Design, which specializes in edited collections of product designs. “It is our constant thrill to be on the cutting edge of design, using both traditional stone-cutting mosaic methods and modern ones, such as the use of water-jet saws, which have brought us into a new era of stone and glass mosaic. I work with a great team of designers who never cease to amaze me; their love of the craft, and their resourcefulness are in perfect harmony with my own. ”
