ARCHITECTURAL CLOTHES Geometric Subdivision to Redecorate the Facade of Modern Architecture place : MAS CAAD, ETH Z端rich, Switzerland time : August 2012 - January 2013 supervision: Ludger Hovestadt, Michael Hansmeyer type : Thesis Design

The main idea for design is taking facade as clothes when architecture was human being. Facade as the skin of building could be transformed into architectural clothes for flexible change according to the different situations. When modern architecture presented the simplicity of geometry as the trendency in modern society, when box-architectures were abandoned, left there, lacked the attentions, when people were bored about the building they lived in, is there any possibility can reuse the old building, renew the architecture in easy and costefficient way? In the basis of mathematics in geometry, programming and the method of origami, I try to redesign the facade of Crown Hall designed by Mies van der Rohe, subdivid them into panel, which as one unit for redecorating the facade of building in terms of user needs.

7

ARCHITECTURAL CLOTHES | 2012

After manipulating the programming result of geometric subdivision, it produced vaired types of architectural clothes, which included different times and methods of subdivision and combinations of varied geometry. Here we used them to redecorate the facade of Modern Architecture.

PHOTOTROPIA A Self-Sufficient Architectural Version

place : MAS CAAD, ETH Z端rich, Switzerland time : 3 March - 1May 2012 participants : 2011/ 2012 CAAD MAS students contribution : Electroactive Polymers Research and Production, Installation Assembly.

Phototropia is part of an ongoing series on the application of smart materials in an architectural context, which merges self-made electroactive polymers, screen-printed electroluminescent displays, eco-friendly bioplastics and thin-film dye-sensitized solar cells into an autonomous installation that produces all its required energy from sunlight and responds to user presence through moving and illuminating elements. The generated energy is stored in batteries below the platform and then distributed via microcontrollers to the respective elements. Moreover, It is a proposal for an experimental architecture that can decay while actively being renewed, as a response to our times of tremendous globalization, increased connectivity and digital identity within our information based society.

BRICKOLAGE

A Paradigm on Building Beyond The Limitation of Masonry place : MAS CAAD, ETH Z端rich, Switzerland time : 22 October - 15 December 2011 participants : 2011/ 2012 CAAD MAS students contribution : Materials, Structure and Coating Research, Fabrication Details Processing, Assembly.

This project was developed in the ETH Zuirch Chair for Computational Design with the aim to explore the relationship between architectural design, diverse methods of generative computer modelling, the importance of materiality (in this case, Ytong-aerated concrete) in the digital age and the physical representation of information using CAD/CAM dtevices (in this case, Kuka robot). The brief requirements are thinking beyond parameterization and exploring the computer as a tool for generating an aesthetically appealing structure, which couldn’t be done manually. The design concept was based on a Reaction-Diffusion algorithm, programmed in Processing for creating a three-dimensional self-standing structure.

BETWEEN SHADOW AND LIGHT Soft-Skin Surface Structure

location : National Chiao Tung University, Hsinhsu, Taiwan time : Spring 2009 supervision : Chor-Kheng Lim type : Semester Design

The concept for this porject is to create the soft-skin structure at an architectural scale and produce the 1:1 pysical model based on the parametric environments and biological structure. Contrary to the traditional free form with the assisted structure, the free form with soft material is hard to be built accurately. Ultimately, through a series of different scaled model tests and material experiments, attributing to the explicit history and reductive function of Grasshopper, and the self-organized biological structure, here we finished the soft-skin surface structure.

101 BUILDING EXHIBITION Exhibition Proposal for Wei Chuan Food Corp.

location : 101 Building, Taipei, Taiwan, 2013 collaboration : Evangelos Pantazis of Topotheque contribution: Pavillion Design, Materials Research, 3D Modeling and Visualization

The idea for this exhibition is taking the advantage of, Taiwanese are crazy for taking photos of everything at everywhere, which aroused us the notion, if we create the space to attract people to go in and take lots of photos with Weichuan’s product, upload photos to Facebook and join the small competition held by Weichuan,  then it will be the biggest commercial effect on both sides. Thus, it doesn’t only present the design which only designer love, but also propose the idea how to use it, then it will be more easier for the public to participant the exhibition.

NEW TAIPEI CITY MUSEUM OF ART Conceptual Design International Competition

location : New Taipei City, Taiwan time : 26 July - 18 August, 2011 architects : Noiz Architects contribution : Materials Research, Investigation of Architectural Regulations, Detailed Drawings, Visualization

The proposal aims to create a museum which reflects a diverse strata of culture and demography of New Taipei city, and presents a landmark and meeting place for the youthfully and dynamic city. The design is composed of sandwich-like layers of floors with penetrating tunnels, which provides the connected paths for public transportation and the vertilation for the air and heat. Each element of the facade will be derived from the local materials or design pattern for representing the visual perception of regional culture from outer appearance. The roof garden invited the public to land the museum for closer connection with their mother culture.

The site is situated on the southern mountains of Taipei in Taiwan. In limited space, Noiz mounted a pure geometric form, the cube, embedded in the green environment on the sloped site for achieving the excellent view for the future resident. With the front pool of building as resort style, it provided the cooling function for it’s local marine tropical climate. The space is open and defined at the same time for reaching towards the nature and different views.

MAUNG HOUSE Private House Design Project

location : Fairview, Texas, USA, 2008 architects : George C. T Woo & Partners Architects & Planners contribution : Initial Design, 3D Modeling, Detailed Drawings and Visualization.

This project is located at Fairview, Texas, where the site is surrounded by the ancient woodland. Architects planned to embed the house in the environment, and the natural landscape of the site was left undisturbed. According to the demands of client, the kitchen is placed in front of the backyard, swimming pool and nature. When the owners were cooking in the kitchen, they can sense the activity of children in the backyard for safety. Hence, the outer surface of facade was decided to use the plaster as the finished layer for whole building’s appearance.

In this interior design project, Noiz designed the custome-made furniture for MoNTUE, which has the request for the style of Renaissance. Consequently, we created the furniture based on the structural law of the boundary representation, which is a method for representing shapes using the limits, and transformed the solid antique furniture into wire-fram one. Here we presented one piece of them to show how to demonstrate the idea into mock-up, then finished product.

EXHIBITION GUIDE FOR DUMMIES Annual iaa faculty & student joint exhibition

location : NCTU Art Center, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan time : 26 November - 16 Decomeber, 2009 collaboration : Artist, Wen-Shu Lai contribution : Exhibition Planner, Fabrication Design and Visualization Designer

The challenge of the designer is to transform the 2D artistic drawings into the dynamic sculpture of the 3D physical instllation. Within the transformation, here we try to rotate and enlarge the digital 3d model to explore the maximum possibility for the dramatic performance in the space of the gallery, which is 6 meters high and 7 meters diameter wide. The ambition of the whole exhibition is the examination of the dynamic spatial dimensions through the installation was consisted of wood, cotton and nylon ropes, and the light went through those extended lines spread out on any directions.
