Paint that Lights Up a Room - Literally

Although they have not gained significant popularity due to the cost of production, plastic paint containers that feature twist-off lids, side handles, and easy-pour spouts give consumers a more convenient and less messy way to get the job done. These containers are usually pretty lightweight and easier to store than typical steel paint cans.

Researchers recently developed and patented a new type of paint that will one day enable home owners to paint lights onto walls and other parts of the home. This new electroluminescent coating technology turns commonly used metal, plastic and wood surfaces into lamps when the paint is energized with an electrical current. One future use of the product could come in handy for those interested in universal design: a painted white hand rail

Whiteboard paint entered the scene a little over 10 years ago, but is still relatively new to consumers. Several manufacturers now produce a unique wall coating that turns any flat surface into an erasable whiteboard. It’s an inexpensive way to draw out the artist in the whole family, and a great feature to include in children’s playrooms, offices and kitchens. Paint has come a long way over the years. TURN YOUR BACKYARD INTO A GREAT LIVING SPACE When you think of making home improvements, the interior and exterior of your home may get the most focus. But there is also a lot of potential to create a great living space just outside your door. Here are a few ways to make your back (or front) yard a seamless extension of your home for entertaining and enjoying the days and evenings of summer, fall and beyond. Outdoor Living and Dining Rooms, Kitchens It’s becoming more common to see cushioned chairs, benches and tables arranged on a separated patio or adjoining the home, often under an awning or roof but still very much in the open air of your backyard. Start off on the right foot with a properly installed and graded patio of stone or concrete and you can enjoy meals or just have a comfortable place to relax with friends and family. Some go further and create an outdoor kitchen complete with a grill, sink, refrigerator, countertop and storage space, often built right into a patio’s stonework. Be sure to buy furniture, rugs and accessories that have been designed for outdoor or outdoor/indoor use.

Stone Gardens Rocks may be an unwelcome site when you are installing fence posts or digging a patio or a hole to place a plant, but don’t toss them away just yet. Stones can add color and texture to a garden, and larger rocks can create their own unique focal point. Add new dimension to your backyard with stones, large or small. Think of it this way — you’ll never have to water them! Pergolas and Outdoor Lighting Break up, instead of block out, the daylight sun with wooden structures like pergolas to bring some welcome shade without creating a barrier between you and the outdoors. At night, these same structures can feature lighting elements designed specifically for outdoor use to add a subtle but helpful glow in the evening. Lighting can also be put to great use along your patio and walkways, providing a lit space for safety and appeal without taking away from the night-time ambience.

Installing elements like these into your home’s outdoor space is a great way to expand the enjoyment of your Fire Pits and Fireplaces home. When it comes to permanent and more costly Another more recent trend is having a skilled professional fixtures such as fireplaces, patios and walkways, and install a freestanding brick or stone fireplace near a even outdoor kitchens, they will work better, be safer seating or entertaining area in your backyard. It can create and last longer when properly installed. Be sure to check a sense of privacy while still leaving you out in nature, as out our Remodeling Section page 12 to 49 to see some well as provide a welcome glow and warmth into the fall great examples of outdoor living spaces. months. Likewise, fire pits can be permanently installed to provide a safe, appealing glow for your outdoor gatherings. Patios and Walkways Is your backyard patio a square or rectangular slab of concrete? Think outside the box, as the saying goes, and expand or replace that drab slab with a rounded or flowing contoured patio. There are many options to choose from, and even the least expensive materials like concrete have come a long way with varied textures, visual appeal and durability. Add a meandering walkway through a garden space and beyond to draw your backyard, landscaping and patio area together into an inviting, cohesive living space. 11

Gray Area Interiors

Addition & Interior Remodel 24

After

A family home receives a facelift and a new view through an addition and remodel of the home’s main areas. The homeowner originally built the home with his father and brothers in 1977. Little had changed in the time he grew out of the home and later bought it with his wife and raised their own family in it. Many memories surrounded the kitchen and living space that no longer functioned in the way it needed to. They decided to enclose the 10’ porch area that overlooked the river because this space was not being used. This allowed for the creation of a small office and storage area, as well as separating the entrance from the kitchen. Gray Area Interiors designed a better layout for the kitchen based on the homeowners needs, expanded their dining area and still gave them a family room with their river views now viewable.

Before It was incredibly important not to lose the integrity of the original home, but also allow for modern upgrades. Beautiful oak cabinets and trim replaced the dark and dated “wood”. A soft tan created a whole new feeling which set off the upgraded windows and solid doors that frame the formerly hidden private view of the Chippewa River. Oil rubbed bronze hardware, plumbing and lighting fixtures are an upgrade in a traditional sense. Black stainless steel appliances and quartz countertops were a must have that complete the updated look, but feel right at home with their heirlooms and keepsakes. The main bathroom was also a part of the remodel. Originally sporting a blue tub and matching toilet, the floor was coming apart and the whole room no longer felt inviting. Gray Area Interiors rearranged the fixtures so the toilet did not receive a starring role when entering the bathroom, added a linen closet, moved the lighting to the wall instead of over their head and refreshed their tile and paint color. A spa-like space by putting blue in its rightful place on the wall and not the toilet!

My background (507) 828-9320 includes a degree in Interior Design from UW-Stout as well as www.grayareainteriors.com over a decade of experience from a variety of design projects including interior design, Parade Homes, home stagings, home flips, 3D renderings, remodels, custom furniture, accessorizing and paint color selection. The exterior of the home also got a facelift with new vinyl siding, Simonton vinyl windows, LP Smart window and door trim, new overhead grage door and new exterior doors. The blending of existing stone and fresh new colors gave the home the essential curb appeal that the home’s exterior was lacking. Legacy Custom Homes and Renovations enjoyed this whole house renovation because it allowed them to give the homeowner the feeling of new open spaces without having to add on to the home. The finishes that the clients chose lend well with the timeless style and design of their home. The home now feels like a brand new home - a home that they will enjoy for years to come!

The Natural Touch Landscaping & Supply LLC

Outdoor Living Space 32

After The owners of this beautiful home have the gift of hospitality. Although their lawn space was large, the back yard had limited entertaining space with just a small deck. Lloyd & Julie met with the owners to discuss possible layouts for the space. Through the consultation it was determined the owner’s priorities included:

Before

• an area to grill that doesn’t separate the cook from the guests • ability to comfortably entertain 3 to 30 people • a fire feature and • have the separate areas feel intentional, yet encompassing. It was helpful to the owner to have Lloyd paint these spaces on the ground to help them visualize the placement of furniture, the features and flow. The owners met with Julie at The Natural Touch supply yard to choose materials and a pattern for the pavers.

After

Willow Creek Paving Stones were chosen in the color of Bronze Blend and bordered with two colors to provide contrast. An excellent decision was made to upgrade from

After

standard concrete pillar caps and bar tops to a new natural stone that resembles teakwood. This gave the homeowners a one of a kind custom design. A pergola was added to frame the space around the high top bar. This also gives a look of warmth, provides light shade, is a structure for lighting and creates the overall feel of an outdoor room. Finally, the space was softened with chocolate mulch, low voltage lighting and plantings in a variety of heights, colors and textures.

Pro-Form Solutions LLC Landscaping & Outdoor Living Space 36

After The customer contacted Pro-Form Solutions LLC to address a water issue with the home and provide a facelift to the backyard. Every time it would rain, water would pond and pour into the egress window. So the project started with reshaping the yard around the house to allow for proper drainage. The customer also wanted a fire pit with a sitting area, so Pro-Form Solutions LLC excavated 10 feet into the hill and installed a 50 foot block retaining wall. A lava colored stamped patio was created to create the outdoor sitting area for relaxing and entertaining. Next, 350 feet of stamped and colored curbing was installed and programmable multi-color LED lighting added. The overall effect provides the homeowner with a unique and inviting outdoor living space.

Remodeling Project

R. Tews Construction & Design, Inc. Exterior Revitalization 38

After There is something special about an old family cottage, its history, and the story it tells. For decades, this 1,000 square foot river front house has been the perfect place to get away on weekends and summer holidays. In fact, it was so perfect that the homeowner wanted to turn this second home into a permanent, manageable home for his mother. But how does a homeowner go about turning a seasonal house into a comfortable yearround home? Join us for a walk-through of a vacation home remodel that turned a cottage into a permanent, attractive home.

Before

Before

The homeowner was amidst a careful process of gradually remodeling the cottage, as the time and budget allowed. He had already replaced the shingles on the roof and renovated the small kitchen with modern appliances and good lighting. Plus, the weathered maple wood floors had been sanded back to their natural splendor. Inside the small cottage, things were steadily improving and mom’s move in date was on the horizon. Unfortunately, the bitter and snowy winter of 2019 resulted in major ice dams on the roof. The spring warm-up caused sudden, massive melting and the homeowner said it “was literally raining inside the walls, and in the house.

So R. Tews Construction rushed over and got to work. Because of the extensive weather damage, the exterior and the insulation HAD to be updated sooner than the homeowner initially planned. All the aged white aluminum siding was removed, and R. Tews Construction put on LP Smartside in an attractive Montana Suede color with coordinating white trim. At the same time, all the old single pane windows were replaced with Weather Shield Signature Series, which are durable and virtually maintenance free. The new windows have extruded aluminum exteriors and stand up to the harshest Wisconsin elements, resisting dents, dings, and scratches with rot-resistant composition.

After

Drafts are now a thing of the past because Chippewa Valley Insulation put R26 in the walls and R55 in the ceiling. Preserving the original interior woodwork was important, so the insulation work was accomplished from the outside of the house before the new siding was installed. With all new windows, insulation and siding, the homeowner’s mom will enjoy year-round comfort and energy efficiency. Not to mention, everyone now has a peace of mind knowing the house meets code and is properly updated. Most importantly, family will visit and keep creating lasting memories.

R. Tews Construction & Design, Inc. Open Concept Living Space 42

After Most families start and end their days together in the kitchen. This family needed to be able to prepare a meal, while still keeping a watchful eye on their young children. Before remodeling, the centrally located fireplace wall blocked the living room from the kitchen. Not to mention the fireplace was never used because the hot front was a safety hazard. By completely removing that wall and fireplace and creating an open concept room, this family can now interact with one another while making sure the children are safe. New large windows also allow natural sunlight to flood in and the beautiful outside landscape became visible from any spot. Thanks to Olson’s Flooring, bright solid maple wood flooring was extended from the living room into the entire kitchen and dining room area (which used to be linoleum). For fun and visual interest, a diagonal patterned inlay was added between the kitchen and living room. Wood flooring is beautiful and long-lasting, if properly maintained and there is a high resale value associated with solid wood floors.

Before

All new custom maple cabinets with a black walnut stain, from Larson’s Custom Cabinets, reach up to the ceiling. The new taller cabinets add bonus storage, compared to the old cabinets which used to be a foot shorter. Chippewa Valley Electrical Contractors installed dimmable, energy efficient LED under cabinet lights, which are essential for illuminating surfaces for meal preparation and cleanup any time of the day. The lights

play off the wavy texture of the lineal 3”x12” Daltile back splash, in Venice Statue color. A pair of statement-making 15” island pendant lights, Progress brand provided by Lydia’s Lighting, coordinate with the dining table chandelier for a stylish finish. The furniture-style island doubles as a prep area and casual seating. Built into the island front is a popular microwave drawer from Karl’s Appliances. Because of the separation caused by the island, the cook is now able to move from the refrigerator to the stove to the sink without having to step over toys or wonder what is happening in the living room. The choice to install granite countertops (rare Nuevo slabs), was influenced by the need for an attractive and durable work surface, as well as easy maintenance. So was the Blanco Silgranit Super Single sink, from Ferguson Bath & Kitchen Gallery, which coordinates with the granite and tile colors.

After

Finally, Benjamin-Moore wall paint colors were carefully chosen to soften and integrate the new open spaces. BC Painting also repainted the ceiling once the new recessed lights were installed. The homeowner’s cozy existing furniture was simply rearranged for traffic flow. Now, the space is familyfriendly as well as fashion-forward. We chose R. Tews Construction for our kitchen remodel and we are so glad that we did! Randy and Steve were very professional and excellent at communicating with us when subcontractors were coming and the plans for the week. This was very valuable for our busy family. They also stand behind their work. We had an instance where something didn’t go as planned and R. Tews went above and beyond to make it right at no expense to us. They also have an amazing and talented designer, Jessica, that took our scattered ideas and created a kitchen that was much better than we ever imagined! She helped us every step of the way with the selection of products and design. She is a very valuable person to the R. Tews team. - Homeowner

Rock and Tait Exteriors LLC Kitchen & Bathroom 44

These homeowners were looking for a way to update their kitchen and make it a more enjoyable place to gather with family and friends. Their current kitchen was sectioned off from the rest of the house by a wall and upper cabinetry, leaving the space feeling dark and secluded. Rock and Tait Exteriors removed the wall and cabinets creating an ‘open concept’ with sightlines from the kitchen to the dining room. This helps the space feel larger and is much easier to entertain a crowd. The window in the dining room overflows with light into the kitchen making both spaces bright and inviting. New countertops, sink, and fixtures were added to enhance the kitchen’s beauty and durable Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring flows from the kitchen to the dining room creating a seamless space.

Whole House Renovation 46

This project was an extensive remodel that generated stunning results. The original 1950’s structure was distressed, damaged and bordering on uninhabitable. What it lacked in looks, it made up for in location. Located on Eau Claire’s south side, this 1-acre lot offers premium privacy, Town of Washington taxes, and in-city living. Where many would have opted to tear down this home, TZB Properties saw potential. After a heavy demolition schedule, the foundation and exterior framing were all that remained. The original story and one-half house contained 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, basement laundry and the world’s smallest kitchen. The floor plan was completely reworked to accommodate 4 bedrooms (included first and second floor master suites) 3 1/2 bathrooms, first floor laundry, a mudroom, an expansive kitchen and dining room and a 3rd garage stall. This remodel features an open concept, modern styling with exposed steel beams, custom maple woodwork package, granite countertops, accent tile walls and plenty of windows to view the beautiful backyard. The exterior boasts board and batten vinyl siding paired with real cedar shiplap accents, Marvin Integrity windows and standing seam steel roofing. Future projects will include a finished basement, premium deck with integrated fireplace and a freestanding garage/shop.

Van Dyck Construction LLC Front Porch & Exterior 48

After The owners of this residence on Lake Wissota wanted to add on an L-shaped porch on to the front of their home and install new LP Diamond Cote siding and Marvin windows.

Before

A concrete floor was poured for the front porch and a Virginia ledge decorative stone was added for curb appeal. Shake shingles were laid on the porch and gables are Brava shakes. After the front of the house was remodeled, the homeowners liked it so much that they decided to complete the renovation on the whole house and extended the renovation to include the garage and boathouse! It was a long project, but the result is a beautiful home on Lake Wissota.
