Chilham Village An idyllic country village setting
C
hilham’s star feature is it’s beautiful village square. In fact, so perfect is the square that it was used as the setting for a series of Miss Marple television dramas, depicting an idyllic country village. The village exudes mostly 16th and 17th century character, featuring period cottages, a public house, a church and a castle.
Only the keep of the castle still stands today. It was Sir Dudley Digges, James I’s Master of the Rolls, who built the present Jacobean house in 1616. The 300 acre castle grounds are terraced and feature a mile long avenue of Spanish Chestnut trees and the inner park was refashioned by Capability Brown in 1777.
The castle stands at the spot where ancient Britons gathered to fight Caesar’s legions and disrupted the Roman charge such that the conquest of Britain was postponed. King John gave Chilham to his son Richard, who later married a girl from Dover.
The house was bought in 1940 and occupied by the 13th Viscount Massereene and Ferrard, a member of the Skeffington family that traced its origins back to the Norman Conquest. When he died in 1996 the property was sold and today is privately owned.
St. Mary’s Church in Chilham was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. It is built on land once owned by an Anglo-Saxon called Sired who fought for King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The tower is 68 feet tall and has a magnificent view of the Downs, the Stour Valley, and even of the Bell Harry Tower of Canterbury Cathedral.

FOOD AND DRINK
Local Farmer’s Markets Farmer’s Markets in the Canterbury villages
F
armer’s Markets can transform your food shopping experience from a weekly chore to a delight, enabling you to see, touch and even taste the delicious, fresh, local produce and tasty food and drink on offer. They bring together local growers of fresh, in season produce, as well as the artisan makers and bakers of a wide variety of interesting, original and tasty food and drink, all produced locally, providing customers with fresh, nutritious, and high quality produce. Farmer’s Markets are run by the community for the benefit of the community and in some cases they have replaced village shops and become a focal point of village life.
They are a huge benefit to smaller businesses giving them the opportunity to sell direct to the public at a fairer price.
Local Farmer’s Markets
Local Farmer’s Markets help keep the rural economy alive, so we all limit damage to our environment and we re-circulate our money locally. They are sometimes held indoors, whilst others are outdoors with covered stalls. Some markets are a combination of the two to make the most of the summer and winter weather in Kent! Farmers’ Markets are held throughout the Canterbury villages weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

LIFEST YLE
Children and Exercise By Patrick Sutcliffe at Pace Sports Coaching
L
ack of physical activity in some young children is now a major concern. With childhood obesity on the rise, and the national decline of the School Sport Partnerships, it is becoming more important than ever for parents to involve their children in activities that raise their heart rate and encourage healthy calorie burning outside of school hours. Although there are still many opportunities to participate in physical activity within schools, the range of activities outside of schools is becoming critical in children developing and maintaining healthy lifestyle choices. There are many ways children can be encouraged to change their leisure time habits, which can make a positive impact upon their health, and help to steer them away from the creeping domination of the
computer game console and television culture. Activities on offer are wide and varying and can include climbing, swimming, a wide variety of sports and even an increase in household chores! Vacuuming is a great way of using up excess energy!! Cycling is a fantastic activity which is open to all after a little bit of time invested in mastering the basic skills. Roadworthy second hand and even new bikes can be relatively inexpensive, and if a family can ride together then the cost of the bikes can quickly be recouped from a reduced outlay in fuel costs from leaving the car at home. Many children are lucky enough to live close enough to their school to ride there, and this is an activity I am able to enjoy with two of my own children aged 6 and 7 on a regular basis, and with a bit
of planning this is something more people could participate in. There are also local tracks and facilities that offer safe offroad cycling Oyster Bay Trail, Fowlmead Country Park and most of Crab and Winkle Way. There are many leisure facilities in and around Canterbury with a variety of physical activities. It may take is a bit of time to find the one that is right for your family. There are many clubs and groups on offer during the school holidays such as soccer schools, multi sports courses, fun clubs Whatever activity your family decide to participate in, make sure that time is devoted to it to enable you to make the most of it. You will all enjoy it now, and your children will thank you for it later. see more on this article www.inlinemagazine.co.uk

HOME AND GARDE NS
Kitchen Design Not just a place for cooking and cleaning
I
t’s amazing to think that little more than 100 years ago, many homes did not have a kitchen. Nowadays, every home has one but many of us don’t just use them for cooking. For some, the kitchen has become a refuge. A place of calm apart from the chaos of family life where you can create culinary masterpieces whilst enjoying a glass of chilled white wine. For others it has become the modern equivalent of the village pump, a place to gather and eat, drink and chat. No longer is the kitchen just as a base for cooking, cleaning and the place to grab a late night tipple or snack from the fridge. It has been transformed into a multi-purpose living space for entertaining, dining and day to day living. So when it comes time to refit, it’s important when designing
a new kitchen to spend some time thinking about how you will use it. What will you and your family use the kitchen for? Are you only going to use it for cooking? Will you be eating meals there? Are you planning to entertain? An Island with an overhanging work-surface coupled with stylish stools makes for a conveniently located area to chat with dinner guests whilst you put the finishing touches to a meal, allowing you to work the range cooker as they enjoy their wine, chat and nibble on hors d’oeuvres whilst at the same time keeping them out of your way! If your kitchen is central to your life and your daily routine, why not integrate it with the dining and living areas, just by adding a comfy sofa or armchair and a television in one corner for those few stolen moments spent relaxing

between food preparation and cooking. There are traditionally three main areas you’ll want to think about when designing a new kitchen. First, the layout secondly, storage and thirdly, the work triangle. Although the work triangle still rules the domestic kitchen, some have taken to an idea found in professional kitchens where the kitchen space is divided into stations, each designated for a particular function such as chopping, cooking, baking or meat preparation. Multiple sinks, varying countertop materials, appropriate appliance placement and task lighting all come together to delineate separate areas of the kitchen for specific tasks. see more on this article www.inlinemagazine.co.uk

The Sunshine State of Florida by Annabel Wilshaw at Travel Counsellors
E
very year, millions of Brits head to the sunshine state of Florida for its great weather year round, pristine golf courses, array of discount shopping and for many, especially families, the lure of the theme parks and attractions of Orlando. We recently visited Walt Disney World Florida with our 2 young boys, aged 4 and 1. We also included a 4 night mini cruise around the Bahamas in order to have a break from the theme parks. First of all, we agreed we could have stayed longer, we loved Disney so much, adults and children alike! However, the short cruise was wonderful and a great way to visit this part of the Caribbean which can be pricey as a land-based holiday.
Walt Disney World offered so much, not just for children. We arranged a Disney 14 day Ultimate Pass which gives the best value over a fortnight holiday.
it was very well maintained, spotlessly clean, with hardworking, friendly crew and the food was delicious. Our 3rd day was spent at sea which is always a bonus so you can enjoy all that a ship has to offer.
For this trip, we opted to stay in a villa which was beautifully furnished and well equipped for the occasions we did eat in. With it’s own pool, spa and games room, it is a very convenient choice for families and good value too. There are many villa developments within a short driving distance of all the theme parks in the Orlando area.
It was a great family holiday and we decided that we would definitely like to visit Florida again in the near future – a fantastic destination with so much going on and so many more attractions to visit.
Walt Disney World Florida currently have some great offers which makes a family holiday here a lot more affordable, including deals on park entrance tickets and free dining plans on certain dates.
The 4 night Bahamas cruise departed Port Canaveral, approximately 1 hours drive from the villa. We chose a Royal Caribbean cruise, Monarch of the Seas. It is one of the smallest and oldest ships in the fleet but
