At the root of Hung's work is a preoccupation with the longevity of Chinese culture. In it he questions how human beings in modern day society engage with the ancient philosophical concept of 'Dao'. This project aims to examine the possibilities of relationships between human beings, Dao, and our universe, through the integration of Chinese calligraphy and new media. The extensive horizontal view created by the multiple screens in this installation is inspired by traditional scroll paintings, with the white % space of endless time. As well as being visually striking, the piece is technologically sophisticated and incorporates specially designed interactive software. With this piece Hung wishes to provide audiences with a unique, refreshing, and

PREVIEW 12 SEPTEMBER 2012
14 SEPTEMBER - 13 OCTOBER 2012
The subject matter of Han's paintings relates to familiar objects from daily life. They are staged in isolation on the surface of an empty background, removing them completely from the context of their surroundings. Paint is applied with delicate brushstrokes in subtle nuances, so the images in Han's paintings seems to be just about to emerge from the canvas. Neither symbolic nor narrative, the images appear to be a single still moment of an otherwise constantly moving world. Han Feng will also be presenting a large-scale installation created from photographs of buildings, screenprinted onto tracing paper and suspended in the middle of the gallery. The fragile material creates a contrast to the solid building, which for the artist demonstrates a sense of dilemma and uncertainty in life.

Luke Ching is a Hong Kong-based artist who received a MA Degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Luke's work is often made as a spontaneous response to his surroundings. With a particular focus on the city, his works attempt to explore the people and places around him, observing and then rebuilding a city with works that sit in-between real = :% here at the Centre he will be conducting various interventions across Manchester, looking at ‘accidental moments' which could happen as part of the everyday. Ranging from 5 minute performances of accidental trips and falls on the streets, to gifts of missing dollar notes left in phone boxes, Luke's project across the city will certainly be one to look out for!

Ting-Tong Chang 4 – 17 APR 2012
2012年4㴨4 – 17㑓
OPEN STUDIO: 20-21 APR 2012
Ting-Tong Chang is a Taiwanese, UK based artist who graduated with an MFA from Goldsmiths, London in 2011. Combining street art with painting and sculpture, he often uses absurd objects or imagery to open a dialogue about contemporary problems including globalisation, consumer culture, and the ‘omniscient fear of terrorism’. For his residency, Ting-Tong will work with local street artists to explore the role of advertising. By transplanting Taiwanese advertising to Manchester, what message can be translated to potential public consumers?

Chinese Arts Centre is continuing to deliver its 9-month education programme with four schools across the region. The summer term takes Chinese Arts Centre out to Cedar Mount High School in Gorton and Alder High Community School in Tameside, as well as bringing over 120 students back into the gallery! Local artists will be working closely with both schools to create responses to our summer project, 60-Minute Cinema% animation from Hong Kong. Each % through a series of gallery visits, workshops and critique sessions. The gallery space for the last week of our 60-Minute Cinema programme. We can’t wait to see the results! This project has been kindly supported by The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts through their Start initiative which provides opportunities to school students who might otherwise not have the chance to engage with the arts.
