Editors Letter Welcome to the February issue of Village View magazine. Our thanks to Debbie Askew for the fabulous front cover photo this month, we think it combines the romantic possibilities for February together with the very real chance of some crisp, cold weather! We know that many of you have been suffering with one of the many nasty bugs around this winter but we do hope that, now the first green shoots of spring are starting to appear, we will all start to feel better. As I write this, at the beginning of January, I have already spotted the first snowdrops emerging in Radnage churchyard and bluebell shoots peeping through the woodlands where I walk the dog – true harbingers of spring. We are very busy again at Village View as we prepare to launch our third magazine in Thame and continue to grow our existing publications in Stokenchurch, Lane End and Princes Risborough. If you know anyone in the Thame area who may like to help us with delivery (paid part time opportunities) please ask them to give us a call on 07712816336 or e.mail salesprv@live.co.uk.

Information for Advertisers Copy deadline 1st of the previous month. Advertisers rates from ÂŁ17 + vat per issue. (Based on 1/8 page advertisement on a 6 issue booking) Discounts available for 3 and 6 issue packages. Contact us for premium page rates and flyer inclusion. Call Jan on 07712 816336 or email salesvv@live.co.uk for more information or to reserve advertising space. Distribution: Village View is delivered to 4000 homes and businesses in Lane End, Cadmore End, Bolter End, Piddington, Studley Green, Stokenchurch, Ibstone and Radnage. (We also publish a similar magazine in Princes Risborough (Princes Risborough View)) Magazines are available to view online at www.chilterndirectories.co.uk Whilst Chiltern Directories aim to provide a quality publication for local reference it cannot be held responsible for the services or reputation of any of the advertisers or for any content of advertisements or editorial herein. Recipe Tasty Apple Pancakes

Ingredients 1 beaten egg 2tsp baking powder 100g plain flower 3tbsp caster sugar 25g butter 150ml milk 2 thinly sliced apples

Stir in 1 tablespoon of the caster sugar. Heat a little bit of oil in a frying pan and put a large tablespoon of the batter into the hot pan. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes until it’s golden brown underneath and almost set on top then flip it over until the other side is cooked. Keep the pancakes warm in some kitchen roll whilst you’re cooking the others.

Pop the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl. Make a dip in the middle with a spoon and pour in a bit of the milk and all of the egg.

Then melt the butter into the pan and fry the apple slices until they’re nice and golden. Add the remaining sugar and stir until dissolved.

Mix it up to make a smooth paste. Slowly add the rest of the milk and beat the mixture so that it makes a soft liquid (this is the batter).

Put some of the apple slices inside two of the pancakes for a super sweet treat!

Aloe Vera - The Medicine Plant How are your aches and pains? Are you sitting by the fire and dreaming of a time when winter meant long country walks without pain and discomfort?

which we need to produce cartilage. Over time, the synovial fluid in the joints beomes thinner, but Chondroitin helps to increase the viscosity of this fluid. Glucosamine is another vital, natural ingredient needed to build healthy cartilage.

You’re not alone, and trying to find something that makes you feel better without side effects can be demoralising to say the least. However, you might like to consider trying something that is entirely natural, organically grown and has provided relief to many thousands of people for hundreds of years.

The types of Arthritis which are the result of a disorder of the immune system (eg Rheumatoid Arthritis) can also benefit from the polysaccharide Acemannan, which is also found in Aloe Vera, and has an immunomodulatory effect on the system.

Aloe Vera contains plant sterols which are powerful anti-inflammatory agents, which reduce pain and stiffness and thus allow increased mobility. It also contains anthraquinones which are natural painkillers. People who suffer from Osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis which are a result of wear and tear, require an intake of 3 natural substances; MSM (Methylsulphonylmethane) is a natural anti-inflammatory organic sulphur compound

A regular ingestion of Aloe Vera Gel containing MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin is the safe and natural choice, giving welcome relief to sufferers. To find out more contact Anne Hogg on 07428 184167

REPS No:R0049192 Pilates targets the deep postural muscles, building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into the correct alignment. It helps to reshape your body, which will become longer and leaner and more toned. It will also improve your posture, achieving the perfect balance between strength and flexibility and it is a great way to reduce stress or unwanted tension. Perfect for athletes looking to enhance their performance and it is also ideal for first-time exercisers. Its slow, controlled approach means it gives much longer-term results. It is especially recommended by medical specialists for those with back problems.

Talking the Walk

Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve (NNR)

It was nearly a year ago when reserve staff thought it would be a good idea to strengthen the existing relationships with the local community by involving them in the development of a new creative interpretation project at Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve (NNR). The idea developed further, ensuring that the Talking Trail would be in keeping with the site, focusing on the key wildlife species and human history that make the NNR so special. We then approached a local Community Interest Company (CIC) Outdoor Culture, and funding was granted from Heritage Lottery Fund to make the project a reality. Outdoor Culture took charge of producing the trail, supported by Natural England staff, bringing together the chosen community groups and schools with artists to create the six finished pieces.

The launch of the trail took a break from tradition, and was officially opened by children running through a chain of cardboard figures. The event welcomed Natural England’s local partners from all aspects of our business, to come along and discover the Talking Trail. Feedback was extremely positive, with lots of promises of help with promotion of the trail, and many said they were inspired by the approach. Visitors commented on how in keeping with the surroundings the sculptures were; which were made of wood harvested from the reserve as part of woodland management or from local National Trust sites. Reserve manager Mick Venters commented “The project has enabled the community to leave a real legacy on the reserve; this is very much their trail. It also brings a new dimension to the visitor experience with both interactive sculptures and the audio element adding to the sensory experience of trail. The latest bespoke audio players are incorporated within the sculptures, each with six different channel options to keep it flexible, including a story trial, challenge trail and song trail, as well as the “My NNR” channel, where participants of the project share what makes the reserve special for them. The fact that the project has been lead by local children and their families, working with professional artists and reserve staff is a really good example of how much can be achieved by working in partnership. Truly inspiring!

Aston Rowant NNR launches a community-led Talking Trail

Working with a CIC was a new experience for the reserve and it worked really well. This project was supported by the reserve’s local Advisory Group and has added to our existing partnership with the Chilterns Conservation Board. PAGE 20

Next time you are driving through the famous ‘Vicar of Dibley’ cutting on the M40 at Junction 5, call in on the reserve and take a look for yourself. For further information contact Mick Venters. Tel: 01844 351833 michael.venters@naturalengland.org.uk www.naturalengland.org.uk

A Passion for Potatoes

February is the time of year to think about perfect potatoes and smashing spuds so make sure you buy some seed potatoes and have them ready for planting. Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable. If you don’t have much spare space in your garden, a patio or balcony will do as a 45cm (18in) diameter pot can produce a useful crop of spuds, just from a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes (add a layer of ‘crocks’ if necessary), fill it about two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As the foliage appears, add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added. Keep the container well watered, then sit back and wait. Use a bigger container, such as one of the Stewart Smithy pots and you can plant three tubers however don’t be tempted to overload your pot with too many tubers or you’ll end up with much less impressive results. Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to ‘chit’ or produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers widest end uppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton and place these in a cool but frost free spot with plenty of natural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting. Buy your seed potato tubers this month and you’ll have time to chit them before planting. What to Grow: Different potatoes have different issues in the kitchen and whilst I have my favourite, the new potato called ‘Charlotte’, I do grow others for their different cooking qualities:

Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola. *If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward. *If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor. *For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue. *For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue. Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested) and ‘ main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if you have a newly created vegetable plot, especially if the soil has not been cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ will be in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. These small, slim gingery coloured larvae are the young stage of the click beetle and cause infuriating tunnelling in the tubers’ flesh. If garden space is an issue, ‘earlies’ are useful as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop such as lettuce or salad leaves after the potatoes have been lifted. No crop is without its share of problems and potato blight is the most infamous potato disease. The fungus responsible is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. It has the potential to kill off the growing plants and may even infect the tubers. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can also select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona. Slugs can also be a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. Try growing Cara, Desiree and Sante. ‘Earlies’ are likely to suffer less damage as they are not in the soil for so long. The biological control nematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife.

*Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue and Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers. *Just the thought of new potatoes dripping in chives and butter is wonderful; again these are best when freshly harvested. Try Lady Christl, PAGE 30 Please mention ‘Village View’ when replying to adverts

Get motivated!

We can all feel de-motivated at times, so if January has passed you by without starting any of those New Year resolutions, turn February into the month you take some positive steps to regain control. Trying to achieve all that you want in the coming year may feel like an impossible task and it can lead to feeling totally de-motivated. Motivation is key to our creativity, productivity and happiness. When we are motivated we feel like we can take on any challenge, meet any deadline and work through any problem to achieve our goal, whether that’s personal satisfaction or public recognition for a job well done. But once de-motivation sets in, then even the smallest task can seem insurmountable. Set small goals If you’ve given yourself a big goal this year, such as losing a large amount of weight or changing jobs, break it into small, short term goals. Give yourself weekly targets – losing 5lbs or re-writing your CV - and then congratulate yourself on achieving them. By doing this you are building up positive ‘credits’ in your mind, keeping you going for the following week. Be inspired Richard Branson has had a few business failures which he’s written about in his autobiographies. But these set-backs didn’t stop him - he just tried again. It can be really uplifting to read about other people’s successes. There are also a lot of self-help and business books available which can help you to think about what you do and don’t want. A good one to start with is the international best-seller, Who Moved My Cheese? (Dr Spencer Johnson, Vermilion) Stay focused Don’t give yourself too many goals to aim for at once. Focus on one, work out how best to achieve it (in small steps, if needed) and work your way through it before starting on your next goal. Diffusing your energy by trying to change too many things at once will just mean you are less likely to keep up your motivation. So prioritise, write yourself a list and start with number one. PAGE 42

Talk about it A great motivator is other people. If you tell people that you’re going to start writing that novel this month or apply for the local half marathon, you’re much more likely to do it. Talk to friends, family and work colleagues - their gentle nudges or encouragement will help to keep you on track. Putting up little post-it notes to remind yourself of your goals and why you want to achieve them will help keep you motivated and on track, too.

Reward yourself For every achievement, however big or small, reward yourself - you deserve it. Reject negative thoughts How many times do you find yourself saying ‘I can’t do it’, ‘it won’t happen’, or ‘it’s too hard’? Negative thoughts can really bring you down, so give yourself a buzz word or mantra to repeat immediately when a negative thought pops into your head. ‘I’m doing it.’ Look at the positive Starting to exercise, cutting down on unhealthy food, changing jobs, starting your own business. None of these are easy. Accept that there will be set-backs and bad days or bad weeks. But keep looking at the positives - what did you manage to achieve this week, or how are you going to do better next week? So plan ahead, have lots of small goals to help you reach your big goal, accept there will be set-backs and look at how other people have done what you would like to do. And keep going - you’re doing great!

Get a dishwasher! You might think you’re saving money but really you’re not. Modern dishwashers use less energy and water (as long as you fully load the machine each time) and you’ll save even more if you skip the drying cycle - just leave the door open and let them air dry! Buy your boiler a new jacket By adding an insulated jacket of at least 75mm thick to your hot water cylinder you’ll be PAGE 46

preventing loss of heat and could save up to about £20 per year. They are easy to fit and cost very little from most good DIY stores. Start packing your own lunch The average worker spends up to £5 per day on lunch which is a whopping £1250 per year. Think of the holiday you could have with that?! Store the rain! Constant British rain might be a bit annoying at times but it’s great for growing vegetables. Get yourself a water butt and recycle the water for your flowers during dry spells too. Recycle your greetings cards Turn them into gift tags or even buy one that can be passed back and forth each year between special friends.

Book Review Secrets and Lies It’s February and the world is set to go into romance overload. But what about those relationships Hallmark doesn’t make a card for: the mistresses, the bits on the side and the forbidden loves? We’ve put together a selection of both classic and contemporary scandals so you can live vicariously through them…unless you have something you want to come clean about? Lady Chatterley’s Lover D.H.Lawrence Long before Desperate Housewives, people were having affairs with their gardeners. Constance Chatterley’s husband lies paralysed after a war injury and as she struggles with both the   emotional and physical neglect, her head is turned by one Oliver Mellors. And boy, must he be good. The novel tackles the relationship between the upper and working classes as well as the battle between the body and mind. For a book written in the 1920s, it’s pretty explicit, making it a favourite of students forced to read Lawrence the world over.

fulfilment, she finds that real life never fails to fall short of her great expectations. The book caused absolute outrage when it was first published, though there was no shortage of women claiming to be Madame Bovary. Gustave always maintained he based the character on himself… but there were obviously a LOT of bored French housewives in the nineteenth century. The Bride Stripped Bare Nikki Gemmell This is the story of an awakening of epic proportions. Why work in shades of grey when you can live your own life by your own rules in glorious Technicolor? A husband reveals a secret on his honeymoon, giving his wife the strength and the freedom to finally go after what she wants and desires...in the form of an inexperienced suitor. Getting Rid of Matthew Jane Fallon No one ever leaves their wife for their mistress. Do they? What happens when the excitement and thrill of a fling turn up on your doorstep and you’re instantly plunged into domesticity? The answer is simple: start operation Getting   Rid Of Matthew. This involves making yourself as undesirable as possible. There are unexpected twists and turns for Helen who really needs to learn to be careful what she wishes for.

Notes on a Scandal Zoë Heller Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. When Sheba the new comprehensive The Post Birthday World school art teacher embarks on Lionel Shriver an affair with an underage boy, Affairs are usually referred to as ‘ill-fated’ and she has only sixty-something invariably it all ends in tears. Stokenchurch Medical Centre Oxford Rd, Stokenchurch, HP14 3SX. Practice Manager: Nigel Sweet Tel:0844 576 9633 www.stokenchurchmedicalcentre.co.uk Saturday Opening We regret that with effect from 1st January 2013 we will no longer be able to support Saturday morning clinics. Preferred Doctor Would patients please note that to facilitate our Partnership change it may not be possible for patients to be allocated a ‘preferred doctor’. Instead some patients will be registered with the practice as a whole and may make appointments with any available doctor. Your community needs your help – Stokenchurch Fire Station Stokenchurch Fire Station, which is crewed by Retained Fire Fighters, is urgently seeking to recruit daytime cover personnel – the station is currently 5 under its establishment and as such there are concerns about its continued viability. The station deals with about 120 calls a year, which means that the demand on an individual would be fairly limited. To be a retained Fire Fighter you must live or work within a 6 minute drive of the station during the period that you are offering cover, be reasonably fit and willing to attend the required training courses. We would be only too happy to meet with employers to explain how the retained system works and what significant benefits result to a company that supports an employee in becoming a Retained Fire Fighter. If you are interested in becoming a retained fireman then please ring High Wycombe Fire Station Manager Danny Whitelock on 01494 898425.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue’s golden year Another in a series of monthly jumble sales will be held by Stokenchurch Dog Rescue at its kennels in Oxford Road on Saturday, 23rd February from 10am till Noon. On sale will be new and nearly new donated clothes, household goods, books, DVDs, toys, greetings cards, bric a brac – and other goods. A similar sale will be held on the last Saturday of each month this year. It is a special golden anniversary year for the charity as 50 years ago a group of dog lovers established the welfare centre on the present site which was a pig farm. Many thousands of dogs’ lives have been saved and nearly all of them rehomed. Their policy is to never put a healthy dog to sleep and they have been rescuing dogs from “death rows” in some other dog pounds where the pressure of incoming numbers is so great that some have to be destroyed. An average of about 39 dogs a month are being rehomed from the Stokenchurch kennels. A special celebration event for the 50th anniversary is being arranged for this summer.
