Editors Letter Welcome to the November issue of Princes Risborough View. It’s hard to believe that Bonfire Night and Christmas will soon be upon us. We have had some lovely late summer sunshine and unseasonably warm days so we wonder what this winter will bring.

Gorgeous Giggles Shop Expansion!

Presenting a dedicated TOY DEPARTMENT. Since Gorgeous Giggles opened it’s doors on a sunny April morning, we have been overwhelmed with the amount of support we have received from people coming into our shop. We are delighted to see people come back time and again and even taking joy in seeing the younger visitors grow up. Part of the ethos of Gorgeous Giggles is to listen to

comments and suggestions that come our way. One of the biggest “complaints” we have received is that the old toy shop on Duke Street shut down some time ago. Therefore we have decided that it’s high time we did something about it. We are opening up a whole new room dedicated to bring you a large selection of toys up to 9 years young. We are keeping with the traditional toys, the educational toys but most of

all, obviously, they are going to be FUN! So whether your giggler has earned a pocket-money treat or has a big birthday coming up, you can now come to Gorgeous Giggles for toys!! Thank you to all our loyal customers for your continued support. For those that have yet to visit, we look forward to meeting you soon. Mark, Helen and Amy Lowe. Gorgeous Giggles Ltd

4 Duke Street, Princes Risborough Tel: 01844 690378 www.gorgeousgiggles.co.uk

The shop for children Since April 2011, we have worked hard to bring you fantasc names in children’s clothing such as; Lilly&Sid, Olive&Moss, Hatley, Frugi, Sarah Louise and Annafie. Thanks to our customers we have been able to expand the clothing range to offer more choice from these suppliers and for that we thank-you!! Not only did Princes Risborough lack the opportunity to purchase children’s clothes but we also miss the fantasc toy shop that was once on Duke Street. For that part we have decided to dedicate a whole new room just for toys!!! Our toys will range from 0-9 years and we will connue with the unique and tradional theme. You can follow us on Twier, Facebook and sign up on our website to receive updates and offers, speaking of which our website address is www.gorgeousgiggles.co.uk where you can purchase goods online and get FREE delivery within a 10 mile radius by using code PR10MILES at checkout.

Risborough Rugby Football Club

Risborough Rugby Football Club was founded in 2008 after a lengthy conversation in the Whiteleaf Cross PH between a group of like minded locals. This lead to an inevitable game of street rugby to test our mettle! The instigators of this heroic (and somewhat silly) kick about, decided to look into the possibility of setting up a rugby club. And so began our first season as Risborough RFC in 2008-09, with a small selection of friendly matches, where we found our feet as a club. We were helped out with strips and balls by the county RFU to get us started. With our home matches being played at Top school and our after match antics being undertaken at several different pubs, we had a good footing in the rugby scene, making a lot of friends along the way. In the following season, we

were invited to enter the Berks, Bucks and Oxon league 2 North and after a shaky start, finished strong and won the title. During this period we began coaching with yrs 7/8 at Top school. Then at the end of 2010-11 season, we finished 2nd in the league (Berks, Bucks & Oxon North 1) and got ourselves a second successive promotion. In the same season we fought our way through a number of Cup rounds to win two cup finals. This has been an outstanding effort for such a young club. All of this has been achieved with a growing squad of players, a small group of sponsors and we are very well supported and this continues in BBO’s Premier league this current season. Why not come along and support your local team at a game and become a member to gain from our great club membership scheme.

Footnotes‌ With Debby Luxton BSc (Hons) Registered Podiatrist

Verrucae are warts that can be found anywhere on the foot but most often on the soles of the feet. They are caused by a virus and thrive in damp, moist conditions such as swimming pools and communal showers. If a verruca develops on a weight bearing area of the foot they can be painful, especially if hard skin (callus) builds up around them. If you think you might have a verruca, try

pinching the skin where you think it is. Corns tend to hurt when pressed but verrucae hurt when squeezed.

treatments should only be administered by a professional and registered chiropodist/ podiatrist.

Both children and adults can get a verruca and there are several treatments available Cryotherapy involves freezing the lesion with liquid nitrogen or nitrous oxide, while caustic treatments include the application of salicylic acid or silver nitrate. Both these

Verrucae often disappear of their own accord although sometimes they can take up to 2 years before they go completely. If they are painful or unsightly, you may wish to seek the professional help of a Podiatrist.

For more information or to make an appointment, please phone Debby Luxton, Registered Podiatrist, on 01844 352200.

Recipe of the Month

Pasta Carbonara

Serves 3-4

Recipe courtesy of chef Lindsey Crozier & photographs by Nigel Maisey

Lovely with some speciality ciabatta bread or garlic bread. Ingredients:

Method:

1 teaspoon olive oil 2 teaspoons butter 300g Spaghetti 2 cloves of garlic 4 slices of smoked ham chopped 2 egg yolks 4 tablespoons single cream Ground black pepper & salt 1 tablespoon grated parmesan cheese 1 large frying pan is required 20

1. Bring a pan of water to the boil and cook spaghetti for 5-10 minutes until soft. When cooked strain and put to one side. 2. Place the butter and oil in a large frying pan and place over a moderate heat, crush or finely chop the garlic and add to the pan, let the garlic soften then add the chopped ham and season. 3. Put the spaghetti into the pan and stir until the pasta has heated through. 4. Place the egg yolks in a separate bowl, add the cream and whisk together, pour over the pasta and stir for 1 minute over the heat, the eggs will curdle if left on the heat for too long so take care not to overcook. 5. When heated through serve and sprinkle with the parmesan.

Solar SavingS E

verything it seems, is going up, from increases in the earth’s temperature to energy prices.

systems. They offer both roof and ground mounted solutions for domestic, commercial and agricultural customers.

But what can we do, as individuals, about such concerns? Well, one green solution that will help tackle both carbon emissions and energy price rises is the installation of solar pv panels. The number of solar pv installations is increasing across the UK as consumers are becoming better informed about renewable energy benefits and the feedin tariff (FIT) scheme.

Roger Cole from Sunsparks, explains, ‘Basically, you get paid for generating electricity. If you then use that electricity in your home, you save money on your utility bill because your solar electricity is essentially free. What you don’t consume, you sell back to the national grid.’

Local company, Sunsparks, designs and installs these cost effective energy

The technology is also fantastically green. It is estimated that a 2kWp domestic solar installation will save as much as a tonne of carbon emissions every year.

5 reasons why you should invest in solar pv 1 You are paid 43.3 pence for every unit of electricity you generate TAx FREE* . If you generate 1,000 units of electricity per year, you will be paid for 1,000 units regardless of whether you use it or not. 2 Buy less energy from your supplier as you use the electricity you generate. 3 Any surplus electricity is exported. For this you will recieve an additional payment. 4 The technology is clean and green producing no greenhouse or other gases. 5 The feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme is UK government endorsed to encourage renewable energy micro-generation. The investment is linked to Retail Price Index (RPI) and guaranteed for 25 years. 28*domestic customers only

news flash! Energy prices are going through the roof… why choose sunsparks? 1 An independant local company accredited by MCS, REAL and Elecsa. 2 Sunsparks only use industryleading, quality brands such as Mitsubishi panels and SMA Sunny Boy inverters to give you optimum energy generation, product reliability and peace of mind. 3 All meetings are carried out with Sunsparks’ proprietors Roger Cole and Kieren Moore, who will answer any questions you may have and will personally oversee all aspects of the design and installation. Sunsparks do not use salespeople or subcontractors. 4 A fully operational solar pv system installed by Sunsparks can be viewed by appointment at our office in Thame. 5 References from satisfied clients are available on request.

Have you noticed how your energy prices have gone up recently? There is a way of limiting these increases, whilst helping the environment and making money. Install solar pv panels from Sunsparks and get paid for all the electricity they generate. Sunsparks specialise in both large and small domestic and commercial solar pv installations, using class-leading products and offer a high-quality, professional service to all our customers. Kop Hill Climb 2011 Photos kindly supplied by Adam Lee, Photrain. See page advert 27.

It’s official Kop Hill Climb 2011was a roaring success. The event at Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire was attended by over 11,500 people and raised over £40,000 for charity. This year saw a record number of entrants, with an excellent range of motorcycles ranging from a 1913 Rudge Multi to a 1972 Norton Commando. The oldest car was a 1903 Humber Humberette – see website for a full entry list. The sponsors’ cars provided a more modern spectacle of Aston Martin, Citroen, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Koenigsegg. Good weather gave everyone the

opportunity to enjoy not only the motor event but also the trade stands, food outlets and family entertainment, especially Connie a very special visitor aged 103 who enjoyed the event from the passenger seat of David Furnell’s 1910 steam car. People were amazed by the technology of the 1904 Electric Waverley and the steam car driving around the paddock. Some notable car nuts, including Chris Evans and Jay Kay took on the hill. Chris in his Ferrari 418 and Jay Kay in his Dodge Charger and the unique Ferrari 330 GT Vignale Shooting Brake. A provisional date of 22/23 September 2012 has been set for next year’s event.

Cutting Remarks! By Mike Payne

I don’t know how historians in years to come are going to find out the nitty, gritty stories that were printed in the local papers in years gone by, as today’s papers are very different by comparison. The internet is all very well but it doesn’t tell you things like, “the Forest Laboratory was carrying out experimental breeding of Death Watch Beetles”, or that the “Black Aces Band was playing at the Princes Risborough Tennis Club’s Grand Carnival Dance!” Trawling through the pages of the local newspapers from years gone by is a great way to while away a few hours and it is amazing what you can discover. My fellow historian Chris Kingham is an expert at finding little Risborough gems from the old newspapers. The other day he gave me a piece all about the “Whiteleaf Flea”. What on earth was that you may ask? It was actually a homemade aeroplane and the original inventor, a Frenchman, made headlines when he flew one from Paris to England for 3s 5½d! It inspired a certain Mr Chambers of Whiteleaf to build one of these planes for himself. The report, from a November 1935 edition of the Bucks Advertiser, goes on to tell the reader a few more details of the machine. Mr Chambers, (the reporter never revealed the gentleman’s first name) had never flown before and was proposing to learn in his own aircraft. All I can say is, sooner him than me! By the way the plane was 20 feet in length, had a wingspan of 12 feet six inches, weighed 200lbs and could land at a flying speed of 20 mph! Apart from that report of the Whiteleaf Flea story, there were lots of other little snippets of interest on the A4 sheet Chris copied. One notice read, “By order of the Aylesbury Brewery Co. Ltd the Old Star Inn and 3 cottages in Church St (suitable for conversion to two cottage residencies) would be auctioned on November 18th 1935”. And another piece about the Timberlab

The Whiteleaf Flea

said that they were tasked to find the best willow for making cricket bats. Some of the bats made were tested by the professional cricketers of the day, players like Eric Hollies, Len Hutton or Denis Compton amongst many others. Meanwhile, the foundations of the new Church Hall had been built and it was expected that the hall itself would be erected and completed within a few days. Not sure which hall they are referring to there, I will find out. One sad report told of the death of a local resident. He was a well-known carpenter and ‘shortly after taking his morning stroll around Risborough he was found dead in his armchair at home’. On a happier note the film that was sweeping the country, the 1934 version of The Old Curiosity Shop, ‘which had been so keenly awaited by cinemagoers’ was to be shown the following week at the ‘Princes Cinema’. Not sure if that was the former name of the Carlton Cinema, or whether the film was to be shown at the Old British School on the corner of Station Road and Wycombe Road, as I know that was also used as a cinema for a while. I will check that out with CK. And finally, there was a report on the virtues, or not, of making your own potted meats and fish pastes. Mmmm, sounds delicious.

Old newspaper cuttings are certainly a treasure trove to historians like me.

Email Mike at mpayne233@btopenworld.com or ring 01844 347511 if you have any interesting newspaper cuttings about Risborough, or if you would like to find out more about the Heritage Society. 38

It’s Hedge Planting Time The late Autumn is the traditional time to plant hedging. The soil is still warm from the Summer, and the soon to arrive rain will ensure the plants will receive much needed water. There are basically two choices of hedging plants - pot grown or bare rooted. We much prefer to use pot grown, although more expensive, the plants are much bigger and stronger and far more reliable to take. Bare rooted is a cheaper option, but we find that come the Spring, many have not made it through the Winter and have to be replaced which is a real frustration. For a good strong evergreen hedge go for Laurel, Privet, Yew - which is good in shade - or the much derided Leylandii. The latter can, if left to its own devices, romp away - growing anything up to 3 feet a year - and can cause problems. But if regularly

trimmed, a Leylandii hedge is a a neat and tidy barrier. If you are looking for some flower in your hedge, think about Escallonia, Forsythia one of the taller Lavenders or even Rosemary. The last two give you fragrance too. For a neat low hedge - go for Box, Lonicera or a Dwarf Lavender such as Munstead or Hidcote. These plants can be trimmed tightly and are ideal for a traditonal knot garden. These days many people are rightly concerned with security and are looking to plant an ‘Intruder Hedge’ to deter any unwanted visitors. Pyracantha, Quickthorn and Dog Rose all possess sharp spiky thorns and will make any burglar think twice.

To give your hedge the very best start, we recommend a dressing of Bonemeal and Rootgrow when you plant. This will ensure your hedge will receive the very best nutrients to help it establish next Spring. We hold a good stock of hedging plants through the Winter season, and we take orders for any bare rooted plants or pot grown varieties we don’t have on site. We also offer a free local delivery service for any hedging. See you soon,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Hobbies and Crafts Exhibition

‘Breath of Spring’ will be the next production for “Shoestring Productions”, with four performances being held at The Whitecross Hall, Monks

Are you a collector, or do you have other interesting hobbies? If so, have you ever wanted a chance to show off your hobby to the public? Well, now you may be able to do just that. If there is enough interest I am planning to put on a Hobbies and Crafts exhibition on a Saturday around March or April next year in the Community Centre. I would like to hear from anyone, young or old, there is no age limit, who would like to take part, whether it be with a collection of stamps, medals, coins, ephemera, models, programmes, scrapbooks, teddy bears, autographs, frogs, doll’s houses or anything else for that matter. The exhibition is open to anyone and I am also looking for unusual collections, like thimbles, or novelty soaps or roadside cones etc! I would also like to hear from people whose craft is their hobby, whether it be sewing, carpentry, jewellery making, metalwork, knitting or anything else.

Risborough, planned for February 2012 including a Saturday afternoon matinee. Performance dates are currently being finalised and will be available shortly

If you have always wanted to show your hobby to a wider audience then please get in touch. I tried this a few years ago in the Molins canteen and the event

Shoestring Productions A Date For Your Diary

Arguably Peter Coke’s most famous play ’Breath of Spring’ will keep the audience laughing from start to finish. It involves a lot of furs and a band of middle aged women, lead by an old dictatorial brigadier, who between them devise elaborate plots to move the said furs from their owners and give the profits to deserving charities. The richness of the characters and the sparkling one liners give the 1950’s play an eternal appeal.
