Welcome to the January/February issue of Chiltern View magazine. It is safe to say that 2020 was a challenging year for everyone in many different ways, however the New Year is all about looking forward and, with the wonderful news that a vaccine is ready and should be available to us all in the very near future, this should all give us hope for brighter times ahead. We have chosen a bright front cover to represent just this. New beginnings, sunshine, hope and lots to look forward to. One of these things could be winning our exciting competition for this issue, which is guaranteed to make you smile. All you have to do is to find the cupcake hidden somewhere in the magazine and email your answer to Coralie at salesprv@live.co.uk by Friday

12th February. Your name will be entered into a draw and the lucky winner will receive a dozen delicious cupcakes. We will even arrange for them to be the flavour of your choice! We have plenty of editorial in this issue but sadly our community organisations are still a little unsure about arranging meetings just yet, but hopefully it won’t be long before they are up and running again. Soon you will all be able to join in with your local groups and we will look forward to keeping you up to date with all their plans. Until then, why not try something new, such as Open Water Swimming? Sue Lord has all the lowdown on the health benefits and fun you can have, whilst making sure you keep safe (p.20). If this is a bit too ambitious for some of you, or perhaps a little cold, then why not enjoy some wonderful concerts put on by the Chiltern Arts Festival (p.60) and get in touch with your cultural side. Until next time

Jan & Coralie

The Thame Green Living Plan is here! Starting now - a ten-year plan for a cleaner, greener Thame by 2030 Healthier lifestyles, more green spaces and more connected communities - these are just some of the outcomes that the Thame Green Living Plan is aiming to achieve for the Thame community. Adopted unanimously by Thame Town Council in July 2020, the Green Living Plan is a ten-year plan for a cleaner, greener Thame. It has been developed to protect and enhance quality of life for everyone locally in the things that really matter – our air, our water, our overall wellbeing, and the natural world that surrounds us. It has benefited from the contributions of many individuals and local groups. While concentrating on Thame, the plan explicitly recognises the vital importance of the town’s links with its surrounding communities and countryside. Actions and projects The plan recommends a series of actions and projects across five focus areas – green spaces and biodiversity, clean air, water, energy and waste - that involve and benefit the whole community. The actions can be taken by individuals, businesses and community groups, plus longer-term infrastructure changes are included. And all with the support of a new community organisation, proposed to be called Thame Green Living (TGL). One of the projects that is already getting off the ground is working with Thame Town Council to improve signage and information boards on 8

existing – and new – walking and cycling routes around the town and extending this more widely. Another project is how to help households improve their energy efficiency, including supporting a ‘Solar Streets’ project initiative in Thame – more news on this later. Get Involved! Charles Boundy, who led the development of the plan through RSA Thame Group, is clear: “This plan is just the start. Without everyone in Thame getting involved, it will remain simply a set of ideas. But by working together we can make the changes we need. Whether you’re a resident, business, part of the council or community group, we’ve set out some easy steps that everyone can take straight away.” The first of those steps is to discover more, by reading the full Green Living Plan on the TGL website, and follow TGL on Facebook and Instagram. Charles continues: “Going forward, we have seen from other community schemes how local, personal and community efforts and success will inspire others to take action. People often respond to cues from others before they change their behaviour, and so we urge everyone to get involved!” Website: www.thamegreenliving.org.uk Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ ThameGreenLiving/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ thamegreenliving/ Contact: info@thamegreenliving.org.uk www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Opened Up in a lockdown Oracle Ear Care opened in Thame, Oxfordshire Starting a small business is daunting enough for most people, but starting up in a pandemic? However, Oracle Ear Care opened its doors the day the country went into lockdown number two. The essential service has remained open to help people who are in desperate need of ear wax removal. Sereta Parker, managing director and clinician said, “During lockdown many people resorted to home remedies which caused problems. Overuse of drops containing hydrogen peroxide can lead to very sore, swollen ear canals and many gadgets sold to remove earwax tend to push the wax further into the ear canal. Since I started in November, I have seen a lot of sore ears.” The practice has incredible technology, including a powerful surgical microscope. Using a suction device and guided by microscopic visualisation, the clinician is able to remove wax, debris and foreign bodies with precision.

The video otoscopy technology allows both the clinician and patient to see the finer structures of the eardrum and surrounding ear canal which allows any abnormalities to be recognised. Sereta goes on to say, “In the first few weeks of opening the clinic I had made several referrals to the GP and ENT for ear conditions that patients were unaware of.” Before

The clinic is fully equipped with PPE and has Covid-19 safety measures in place. Sereta adds, “We are happy to welcome anyone who needs advice. It is so important, now more than ever, to be able to hear well especially when lip reading is hindered by wearing a mask”.

Oracle Ear Care is a family-run ear care clinic in Thame. Their services include all types of wax removal along with foreign body removal. Oracle Ear Care: email admin@oracleearcare.co.uk or call 01844 617 478 www.oracleearcare.co.uk.

50plus began as a handyman service almost 21 years ago. Today the service portfolio has grown to include a broad set of home repair, improvement and commercial services and very much in keeping with the company’s name - a range of services for the elderly.

50plus is run from their head office on Chesham High Street with field staff distributed over a wide area. Customers often pop in to the offices to get questions answered and are always welcomed. In keeping with the times the company offers online booking and has embraced technology to provide a range of easy to use technically enabled services for our elderly customers. 50plus was originally conceived as a means of providing employment for those aged 50plus and whilst they remain true to the original ideal, the idea of using mature service providers together with a service orientated structure, chimes with customers who are 50plus. So telephones (and today email, web, WhatsApp and more enquiries) are answered, free advice is provided and appointments are run on a date and time basis. So as they say: they are different - its all about the service.

Cold Water Swimming/Bobbing – Is it worth the hype? Cold water swimming seems to be one of the latest buzzwords we are constantly hearing. “Bobbing” is the term I use for less confident swimmers that engage in this activity. They enter standing depth water purely to reap the benefits, making it a more inclusive activity. So “is it worth the hype?” Well, all I say to those sceptics is “don’t knock it until you have given it a go.” The reasons cold water swimming is forever growing in popularity is due to the many benefits it brings, both to our mental and physical wellbeing. Mental and physical health benefits are plentiful: • Not only does it compliment the drug treatments for anxiety and depression, many with regular exposure to cold water have weaned themselves off their medication completely. • You get that “feel good feeling”. The cocktail of cold water and exercise releases the body’s feel good hormone dopamine. Swimming with others only intensifies this experience. • Stressful situations we come across in every day life become more manageable too, also boosting your self-esteem. • Improves your circulation. • Boosts your immunity, repeated exposure is reported to increase white blood cell production, which means less coughs and colds. • Improves energy levels and alertness. • Reduces inflammation like an ice bath. 20

Please be aware cold water swimming isn’t without risk! It is dangerous if not done properly and without the correct education and kit. Things To Do Before You Take The Plunge: • Book onto an introductory cold water session with a qualified coach to learn about cold water shock, signs of hypothermia, the after drop, varying weather conditions, what kit to buy and why hot showers are an absolute no! • Be in good physical health, if in doubt speak to your Doctor. • Have the correct kit – bright swim hat, tow float, wetsuits if you choose to wear one or just a costume (skins). • Check out the body of water you will be entering. Lifeguarded? Currents, tides, contamination, temperature etc. • Be prepared for afterwards, warm clothing, hot drink, sugary snack. In answer to the question “is it worth the hype?” To me and thousands of others the answer is a resounding “yes” due to the overwhelming benefits. Open water swimming/bobbing in cold water is a great leveller. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. It is a fantastic community to be part of. If the low temperature is putting you off why not have a go in the warmer months. Swimming outside in the elements of nature truly is an amazing experience at any time of year. I can guarantee you will be smiling from ear to ear. 07799 547967 | suelord@openwatercoaching.co.uk

Feet Treat Footcare, feet treat, feet, my toes!!! Least of my worries, don’t you know there’s a pandemic!!! These are well accepted and understood feelings at the moment whilst everyone is trying to stay safe and well in these challenging times. However, mobility, comfort, independence, and foot health are still important. Diabetic patients especially understand completely the need to keep nails short, skin health checked and sensations of feeling recorded. All of us need our feet to walk around our homes, maintain our exercise routine which in turn helps our mental health. No one likes to be in pain; due to corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, or just long nails. Please don’t forget your feet! All services are COVID compliant and adhere to strict guidelines. Between them, our team have removed wax from over ten thousand ears. So let them put their experience to good use, by solving your earwax problems. WHO ARE WE AND WHAT DO WE DO? We are an Audiologist led network of earwax removal clinics. The advantage of this is that if you feel that you have an ear wax blockage, but it turns out that there isn’t any, we can also provide hearing tests and give unbiased independent advice. If wax build up is causing a problem or is uncomfortable, it may need to be removed. Microsuction ear wax removal is a gentle and safe procedure. Earwax is natural and has an important function. It should not be routinely removed

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue I am looking for a home with experienced owners. My new owners would need to give me time and space to become comfortable in my new environment, and to not push me into situations I am uncomfortable with. I love to spend time outside in our enclosed areas and will have a sniff around and investigate my new environment, however I hate the rain! I can be quite the needy boy, so if you wander too far away from me, I will quickly be back by your side to make sure you aren’t going to leave me. Once I’m satisfied with my investigations, I like to follow close to my handler’s side. As I have shown some aggression when I’ve been very uncomfortable around strangers, and due to my previous history in the home, I must wear a muzzle when out in public. My carers also suggest that my new owners

ProMac Locksmiths

build a strong bond with me and teach me a reliable recall, before allowing me off lead in open spaces. I am a very sweet boy, who would love my new family to give me the time I need to gain my confidence in my new home and to understand it may take some time for me to fully trust them. In the right home, I will make a wonderful, sweet and affectionate companion. Can you offer this lovely young boy a loving and permanent new home? www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695

GULP! hard water are far more serious than you might think. Limescale in your water supply is impacting both you and your home. The most obvious sign you live in a hard water area is in your kettle. Mineral deposits in the water are left all over the element and up the sides in the form of damaging and unsightly limescale. Most people just use a liquid descaler from time to time and think with hard water that also means you’re running it through your hot water boiler, your washing machine, your dishwasher and your plumbing. Never mind your family are bathing in it too!

The result? Hard water is costing you and your home.

Appliances like your washing machine are wearing out quicker than they should and you’re using far more cleaning products

and toiletries than you really need to. Not only that, when you wash, bathe or shower in hard water the result is often dry, irritated skin and lifeless, dull hair.

The answer is a Kinetico Water Softener Designed by the world’s leading manufacturer of water softeners. The Kinetico Premier Compact’s twin-tank system prevents damaging limescale from ruining your home and ensures a constant supply of wonderfully soft water 24 hours a day.

straight away When you wash in wonderfully soft Kinetico water your skin will feel softer

and your hair will look shinier. Not only and work surfaces are so much easier and quicker to clean too.

and running costs low. Compact and

subject to survey and any further costs are quoted prior to purchase.

You can transform the water you drink too

Over the course of a year, you could save up to ÂŁ400 (average family of 4) on household cleaning products and toiletries.

Save time and money, and look after your appliances Limescale build up in any appliance that uses hard water can cause it to work less e iently and wear out quicker. The more expensive the appliance the more costly it is to repair and renew. Soft water causes none of these problems and therefore appliances will work better and last longer.

Simple and easy to install A Kinetico Water Softener is non-electric which means there’s no wiring or power required so installation is simple

enjoy great tasting water straight from out impurities like chlorine, lead and bacteria to provide a constant supply of fresh, delicious drinking water 24/7. Far cheaper per litre than bottled water.

Pet Health

Happy New Year – pet M.O.T. time! By Fiona Mullan BSc Hons RVN VPAC It’s the start of the New Year and the perfect time to organise your pet’s annual ‘M.O.T.’ You might be thinking ‘I wouldn’t go to my doctor if I wasn’t ill, so why should I take my pet to the vet?’ - Good question. Well, pets are a little different to us, in that they can’t say when something hurts or tell us when they are just feeling a bit ‘under the weather’. They are also experts at hiding signs of pain, discomfort and disease. Particularly cats and smaller prey species, like rabbits. Therefore, a routine check-up is a great way to ensure your pet is in optimum health and can allow your vet to detect signs of problems that are on the horizon, possibly sparing you the trauma of an emergency visit later on. It is also a great time to ensure that your pet’s preventative health plan is up to date, including vaccines and anti-parasite treatment. Vaccinations help protect your pet from potentially fatal diseases. Kittens & puppies require a ‘primary course’ when they are young which involves multiple injections at specific timings to prime their immune system. Puppies are routinely vaccinated against: distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and canine hepatitis. Kittens are routinely vaccinated against: cat flu, feline enteritis and feline leukaemia virus. Following the primary course your pet will require annual ‘booster’ vaccines to keep their immunity at a safe level. Without boosters their immunity will wane and they are at risk of contracting diseases. Your vet always checks your pet’s records to see what has been given over the last few years. 44

Familiarising your pet with visits to the vet is important. Coming to the vets need not always be about illness. It can be a fun and social event! FREE nurse clinics are a great way to get your pet used to coming in, without associating every trip with needles and procedures. These ‘socialisation visits’ are essential for puppies and kittens, so they grow up to be confident and relaxed, but animals of all ages can benefit from visiting regularly! It is also a nice opportunity for both you and your pet to get to know the practice team better! Leaving your pet at the vets can be a really stressful experience, so wouldn’t it be nicer if you got to know the staff and who will be looking after your pet beforehand? From our perspective it is lovely to get to know owners and their pets better, and we welcome the opportunity for you to come in and get to know us too.

Book Review

New discoveries By Kate Duggan It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to reading. We tend to choose genres that we know we’ll enjoy. But it can be good to try something new once in a while… Quite – Claudia Winkleman Can’t stand books by celebrity authors? Try Quite. Reading it is a bit like putting the world to rights with your best mate over a glass of wine (or three). You’ll find out about everything from Claudia’s views on relationships and parenting to her thoughts on naps (essential) and brightly coloured clothes (to be avoided at all costs). The Girl Who Drank the Moon – Kelly Barnhill Still turning your nose up at reading children’s fiction as an adult? You’re seriously missing out. Start with The Girl Who Drank the Moon. A baby is left in the woods as a sacrifice to a witch. But rather than kill her, the witch raises the child as her own. Meanwhile, the mother is left to go mad in the tower, where the real threat lies. Storytelling at its best. Humans – Brandon Stanton Never bought a ‘coffee table book’ before? Humans won’t disappoint. It’s a difficult book to describe in a way that does it justice. Let’s just say that it’ll give you a glimpse of people’s lives across the globe. You’ll hear from people with differing viewpoints, discussing everything from the worst and best moments of their lives to everyday concerns. You’ll be uplifted, saddened and inspired and end up feeling just a little bit more connected to the rest of humanity. 46

Reality and Other Stories – John Lanchester If you haven’t read any ghost stories since your teenage years, Reality and Other Stories is a good place to start. From traditional ghost stories to Black Mirror-esque tales, each story is deliciously creepy and focuses on an aspect of modern life, from a twisted reality show to a possessed selfie stick. As you’d expect, some stories are stronger than others, but overall, it’s a decent collection to keep you occupied through these long winter nights. The Night Bus Hero – Onjali Q. Raúf Ever read a book with an unlikable protagonist? Ten-year-old Hector is a bully. He can generally be found causing trouble or picking on someone smaller. But when he mistakenly accuses an innocent man of a crime, Hector has to decide whether to continue on his path or become the hero for once. Strictly speaking, this is another children’s book, but it’s likely to be enjoyed by anyone aged ten up. A Single Thread –  Tracy Chevalier As a genre, historical fiction is incredibly varied, covering as it does every period in the last few thousand years. A Single Thread focuses on the period between the two world wars. At thirty-eight, unmarried Violet is a ‘surplus woman’, with no real place in society. However, she also has what many married women at the time did not – freedom. When she starts embroidering kneelers for Winchester Cathedral, Violet finds a way to both connect with the world and make her mark on it.

As many of you will know, we cancelled our regular daily service from mid-March in response to Government guidelines on dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. We also stopped running outings and making the bus available for group use. However, our bus and drivers have not been idle. We joined with Princes Risborough Town Council in providing a delivery service from The Risborough Basket and our bus delivered essential supplies to the outlying villages until the beginning of August. The delivery service was a lifeline for many people in the outlying villages and greatly valued.

On 19th July we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of starting our service by delivering afternoon tea tins to nearly 100 of our loyal passengers in and around Princes Risborough. We’re now looking at when we might be able to get back to our normal bus service. Restarting will not be easy but we will keep our passengers informed through Chiltern View magazine and our website www.racb.co.uk For further information contact Debbie on 07941 963097 or email her at racb@talktalk.net

Your Local Theatre Competition

Thame Players Stage HighFashion Sale Thame Players have been undertaking a major review of their costumes. Over the years, they have accumulated in the region of 2,000 costumes and items of clothing, stored in a nearby barn. When there was no more room, it was decided to sell to the public a number of items unlikely to be used in future productions. This initiative is resulting in a stylish array of high-fashion clothing items which are either as new or in good condition. Included are designer labels such as Frank Usher, Gina Bacconi, Karen Millen and Laura Phillips; vintage wedding dresses, elegant cocktail dresses and evening wear, plus gents’ DJs, waistcoats and tailcoats. There are also 60s and 70s classics, such as Carnaby Street jackets and Laura Ashley dresses. Thame Players are planning to sell many of these items to the public on eBay, with offers invited on prices from £5 up to around £450 per item. For more information about this unique opportunity

Chilli veg noodles If you fancy a meat-free meal then look no further than this quick and easy spicy noodle dish. Serves 4 Ready in 20 minutes 200g soba noodles 150g frozen broad beans or edamame beans 2 tsp sunflower oil 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 2cm piece root ginger, peeled and grated 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 2 carrots, peeled and shredded into thin strips 100g sugar snap peas, halved lengthways 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 1 tbsp sesame seeds Handful fresh coriander or parsley leaves Sriracha sauce, to serve

1 Cook the soba noodles in a pan of boiling water following the packet instructions. Add the broad beans or edamame beans to the pan 2 minutes before the end of the cooking time. Drain and rinse under cold water and set aside. 2 Heat the sunflower oil in a large non-stick frying pan or wok over a high heat. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the carrots and sugar snap peas and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until just tender. 3 Add the noodles and beans to the pan or wok, along with the soy sauce, sesame oil and sesame seeds. Chiltern Arts Festival Announces Six Live SociallyDistanced Concerts This Spring Following a successful duo of socially-distanced Autumn Concerts in October, Chiltern Arts has announced a programme of six glorious classical concerts this Spring – with audience safety and comfort coming first at every turn. Running from Friday 26th February to Saturday 6th March, the Festival features the highest quality classical music from world-renowned musicians. We hear Brahms and Rachmaninov in Princes Risborough from pianist Clare Hammond; in Henley, Echo choir explore how we listen to Renaissance music, taking the music of Orlando de Lassus as a starting point for a charming, honest and original piece of theatre. Mahan Esfahani treats us to one of Bach’s most loved works in Marlow: the Goldberg Variations. Dive into an immersive Argentinian experience at The Gatsby in Berkhamsted, with music from the Nuevo Tango Quintet and Argentinian food and wine (courtesy of Tring Winery).

The Sacconi String Quartet

In Great Missenden, the Sacconi String Quartet treat us to Dvorak’s famous American quartet and Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet. And in Old Amersham, the City of London Sinfonia explore musical identities with a programme including Mendelssohn’s stunning Octet and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll. Join Chiltern Arts this Spring for something we will never again take for granted: the luxury of experiencing a week of live in-person concerts – the vibrations of the room, those real human moments and the sheer joy of sharing the experience with others… albeit whilst masked from a safe social distance!

Happy New Year, happy new garden? Now that December is firmly behind us and the New Year has begun you might feel like giving your garden a makeover in time for the summer. Why not swap the usual new year’s resolutions to get fit, lose weight and quit eating chocolate with a more enjoyable resolution by pledging to improve your garden. Resolution One: Spend more time in the garden The more time you commit to gardening, the more you will hone your skills and learn new things. During the winter, your garden often gets neglected, so spending some more time each week will help you get that garden ready. Resolution Two: Try new plants and colours Changing a planting style or colour scheme can radically alter the appearance of a garden. We can all be guilty of becoming complacent and churning out the same plants year after year, simply because we know they’ll be successful. Variety is important to keep gardening interesting, and to grow and develop as a gardener. Resolution Three: Compost Composting is a fantastic way to get rid of all the rotten foliage and vegetable scraps you have around, and compost is so full of nutrition that when sprinkled into your soil, your plants will flourish. Invest in a good quality composting bin this year and your garden will never look better. Resolution Four: Wildlife Your garden can be more than just a sanctuary for you to relax in, it can be a habitat for all kinds of 62

wildlife. Whether you want to provide shelter for hedgehogs, hang bird feeders for local birds, or even install a pond and add some aquatic life, you can make your garden more enjoyable for the local wildlife. Whether your garden is new, different or long established as we enter 2021, make this the year that you make the most of your outdoor space. Knowing what you are aiming at is the first and key step to a happy new garden in 2021. Hellebores (pictured above) flower in winter to early spring and are small plants, easily missed at this time of year. So, if you plan to grow some, they are well worth it, be sure to plant them somewhere where they will be appreciated. With many varieties they add a vibrant colourful addition to a new or established garden. With Warm Wishes & A Happy New Year

The Hartwell Team

Pain, Care, Diagnosis - Effective Treatment Chronic or Persistent Low Back Pain (CLBP) continues to be a major cause of disability, occupational absence and increased healthcare use. Osteopaths utilise tools to assess and treat CLBP, which has multi-factorial causes. Behavioural movement restrictions lead to more muscle tension, joint stiffness, sedentary behaviour and then a rise in fear of pain in normal physiological ranges. The one-size-fits-all approach of first line MSK exercises are often too demanding and further serve to pattern a ‘movement hurts’ belief. Chronicity worsens and other difficulties may develop. Pain can become an all-encompassing phenomenon and it is not surprising that patients with CLBP report higher than average levels of anxiety and depression. David offers a therapeutic and tailored healthcare intervention approach, using Osteopathy along with rehabilitation. These evidence-informed techniques guide people back to a less fearful, more mobile and a more fulfilling life. On average,

Osteopaths have significantly longer appointment times, which means David’s in a unique position to use his expertise to screen for conditions that may have a long delay in getting diagnosed. Osteopaths are recognised for their skill in supporting patients with long-term and chronic pain conditions. In chronic pain as a whole – there are often emotional, historic, and psychological factors that must also be addressed if the patient is to return to wellness, counteracting behavioural patterns of fear. Chronic pain patients need assessment and treatment that can address these encompassing factors.

Best wishes, David
