hilliwack mayor Sharon Gaetz, in her role as Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) board chair, says if you think we have clean air in the region, you’re wrong. In an FVRD press release issued Dec. 5, Gaetz called into question clean air accolades heaped upon Abbotsford by an Ontario-based company that makes air purifiers. The AirGenius Awards, a creation of Honeywell Air Purifiers, found Langley and Abbotsford to be in the top 10 Canadian cities with the cleanest air. “Cities known for heavy traffic or manufacturing ultimately will have worse air quality than others, but environmental factors like proximity to mountains or an ocean breeze can trap and also sweep away air pollution,” said Ted Myatt, a senior scientist at environmental consulting company Environmental Health & Engineering, in a press release. In response to this release, the FVRD says ground-level ozone has steadily been increasing in B.C. over the last 20 years with Hope as the provincial hot spot.
