Arav, age 11, from Sugar Land, Texas was diagnosed in 2019 with

a rare blood cancer, acute promyelocytic leukemia. Diagnosis and treatment were very difficult for him, but Arav knew that he wasn’t alone on his journey. MD Anderson's Children’s Cancer Hospital's caring clinical staff, Child Life team, music therapist, and art teachers helped him through tough times. He says, “It was hard but with my parents, family, friends, and the supportive staff at MD Anderson, I got better day by day.”
With COVID-19 restrictions currently in place that prevent him from attending art sessions at the main hospital, Arav enjoys virtual art sessions provided by Children's Art Project. “Art, to me, is a way of expressing my feelings. It gives me freedom. I’m not an expert, but I love to learn. I have a lot of fun during the art sessions.” He also loves to sing, tell jokes, and make up fun challenges during art time, such as a blindfolded drawing contest. In addition to the visual arts, he plays the guitar, writes his own songs and rap lyrics, and loves to play football. This young patient’s resilience, appreciation for everyone around him, and love for his family are truly inspiring. Arav says, "Today, I’m cancer free. That’s how my cancer story goes.” 2
