Daily News… DOCTORS TRY BRINGING SCHUMACHER OUT OF COMA French doctors have started trying to bring Formula One legend Michael Schumacher out of the induced coma he was placed in after a near-fatal ski accident in December. The drugs used to keep Schumacher, 45, unconscious have begun to be reduced, though it may be some time yet before he comes to, his spokeswoman, Sabine Kehm, said in a statement released on Thursday. «Michael’s sedation is being reduced in order to allow the start of the waking up process which may take a long time,» the statement read. «For the protection of the family, it was originally agreed by the interested parties to communicate this information only once this process was consolidated. Please note that no further updates will be given.» It was unclear when the waking-up process actually began or when it was scheduled to be completed. The first report that it was underway came on Sunday in France’s Journal du Dimanche and a subsequent flurry of similar media reports prompted the family to make a statement. Schumacher has been in intensive care in Grenoble University Hospital since being flown there by helicopter following his December 29 accident in the Alpine resort of Meribel. The German fell and hit his head against a rock after venturing on to a small off-piste section while skiing with his son and a group of friends. The impact of the collision was sufficiently powerful to split the helmet he was wearing and cause severe head injuries. Surgeons said he suffered bleeding and bruising on his brain and a scan showed «widespread lesions». After the surgery he was placed in a medically induced coma and his body temperature was cooled to reduce the risk of further damage. Another surgery was carried out on December 30 to reduce bleeding. There has been no indication as to whether Schumacher has a chance of making a full recovery.

International News… WHEELCHAIR BANDIT A wheelchair-bound man with a hankering for a sleeker set of wheels drove a car right out of a Florida dealership. Shamal Battice allegedly stole the vehicle from an auto dealership in the central Florida city of Ocala under the pretext of planning to buy a car. The disabled man asked the salesman for help getting into the vehicle, saying he merely wanted to feel the interior of the car, she said. But once seated behind the wheel, Battice locked the car door, turned the ignition key and hit the gas -- using his folding cane to depress the accelerator pedal as he sped away.

CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change means more extreme weather and baby penguins are paying the price with their lives, said a pair of long-term studies out Wednesday. Soaking rainstorms and unusual heat have killed vast numbers of young Magellanic penguins at the bottom tip of South America, said one of the papers published in the journal PLOS ONE. «It’s the first long-term study to show climate change having a major impact on chick survival and reproductive success,» said lead author Dee Boersma, a biology professor at the University of Washington.

Sathurday the 1st of February 08:00Pm A.J.O.E. - Lorient With the generosity of député of St. Martin & St. Barthélemy Daniel Gibbs and Raymond Magras Roland Guerin, Double Bass - Sean Ardoin, Accordion - Derek Douget, Saxophone - Chris Adkins, Guitare - Aaron Goldberg, Piano - Joe Dyson, Percussion This dynamic group is performing a particular new style of Zydeco music, one with a Jazz twist. Most of the players are from the Baton Rouge - New Orleans area and bring with them a distinct variation of the folk music. Zydeco translates from the creole phrase “leh-zy-dee-co nay sohn pah salay” and the genre has become synonymous with the Louisiana region. Zydeco is usually a fast tempo and is a synthesis of Creole music, Cajun influences, R&B, blues and gospel. Today, this Jump Up! concept is heard on most Caribbean islands for social events held informally at house dances and family gatherings. Get up and dance ! With the generosity of Dantes & Maria Magras

John Ellis Jazz Quartet Sunday the 2nd of February 05:00PM Anglican Church – Gustavia With the generosity of Flunison Foundation – Mary & Hugh III Wise John Ellis, Saxophone - Joe Dyson, Percussion - Aaron Goldberg, Piano - Reuben Rogers, Contrebasse Over the last two decades John Ellis, Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, and Joe Dyson have been touring and recording together in various configurations. In the years since their meeting they have frequently teamed up on a variety of projects, often under each other’s leadership. Aaron has played on four of John’s recordings, John often plays in Reuben’s touring band, and Reuben plays bass in Aaron’s working trio. A few of the quartet’s collaborative efforts include “By A Thread” (John Ellis), “The Things I Am” (Reuben Rogers), and “Home” (Aaron Goldberg). John and Aaron also co-produced the music for the wildly popular children’s book series “Baby Loves Jazz”. Young Joe Dyson, the group’s newest member, has recently been working in John’s touring group, and has made a name for himself in the groups of Alvin Batiste, Donald Harrison and Dr. Lonnie Smith.
