Fees and Funding

90% of Chetham’s students receive full or partial funding through the Department for Education What matters at Chetham’s is musical potential, not background or ability to pay. We are one of nine schools within the UK Government’s Music & Dance Scheme, designed to enable young, talented musicians and dancers to receive full time education and training at a specialist school irrespective of parents’ financial means. If you are offered a place at Chetham’s your parents will be asked to provide their income details to the Bursar who will then calculate what their annual contribution to the fees will be. As a rough guide, if your parents earn less than £20,000 per year they will pay only £600 a year towards your boarding fees and education. If your parents earn over £190,000 a year then they will be asked to pay full fees. Everyone in between has to contribute on a sliding scale, shown opposite. This scheme does not apply to Choristers or overseas students, except for EU students aged 16 and over. Choristers should speak to Manchester Cathedral about the support available towards their fees. Please visit our website for full details of eligibility, or speak to us about financial support for students not included in the scheme.

A Sound Investment Chetham’s offers its students a unique opportunity to develop into successful young adults through a music programme tailored to each individual, a superb academic education, and a dynamic programme of concerts, masterclasses and performance opportunities. Funding through the Music and Dance scheme ensures that these opportunities are open to every child with the musical potential to thrive in our community. However, if your family income means that you qualify for a smaller proportion of this funding, you may still find that Chetham’s is a cost-effective choice for supporting your child’s musical and academic development. A year’s music lessons: up to £1,110 All Chetham’s instrumentalists receive a minimum 2 hours’ individual lessons, whilst choristers receive around 1 hour’s instrumental tuition in addition to rehearsals at Manchester Cathedral. Chetham’s students also enjoy 1:1 sessions with staff accompanists, and scheduled practice time supported by fully trained musicians. Youth Orchestra: From £200 for local music service membership up to £3,700 for a Junior conservatoire Chetham’s students give around 250 performances throughout the year, ranging from daily Lunchtime Concerts to performances at venues across the region, recordings, international exchanges, recitals and orchestral concerts. Boarding School: Average £27,600 Chetham’s provides a superb academic education alongside a music programme tailored to students’ individual needs. Chetham’s exam results are within the top third of independent schools nationally, with students progressing to leading conservatoires and universities to study both music and academic subjects. School meals, transport, concert tickets: £1,480 A Chetham’s education includes all meals whilst at school, including dinner for students attending evening rehearsals. UK music and educational visits are included in school fees, with travel contributions invited only for occasional international visits or recreational activities. Figures published in The Telegraph, 2015, based in part on research by John Lewis * MDS funding also provides means-tested support for students at 12 Music Centres/Junior Conservatoires
