Welcome to the International Property Collection Gibraltar Edition, Summer 2013 We welcome you to the Summer Edition of our Gibraltar property magazine. In recent months there has been a surge in interest in Gibraltar property; residential and commercial. At times, we have struggled to cope with the number of applicants approaching us, which is a great problem to have. As a result of this sustained increase in demand levels, we have recruited an additional person to the team and we welcome Michelle Bannister as senior sales negotiator. Michelle previously worked at Chesterton in the Barnes and Battersea offices in London and this appointment should add further quality and professionalism to our Gibraltar office. Indeed, I believe professionalism is the key to our current success. The estate agency industry in Gibraltar is unregulated. Yet at Chesterton, we adhere to our own internal professional codes as though we were regulated. All landlord and tenant monies are held in properly segregated client accounts which are ring-fenced from our own monies and reconciled on a weekly basis. Although this is the norm in the UK and elsewhere, this is not a requirement within Gibraltar, yet we believe clients prefer this approach. Our residential lettings business has gone from strength to strength. It is a testimony to the quality of our team that many properties which become available are allocated to our applicants on our waiting list prior to the properties being showcased on our website. Would-be tenants who cannot source the apartment they desire are now turning into buyers. This has fuelled the recent high level of activity in the residential property sales sector, especially at the lower and higher end of the price spectrum where there is limited supply. Our sales pipeline epitomises just how busy our office has become in recent months. Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival 2013 In March 2013, Chesterton was approached by Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar to be a foundation sponsor of the first International Literary Festival on The Rock which is taking place on the 25th - 27th October 2013. It was a natural fit given the high profile of G.K. Chesterton, a member of the renowned real estate family, in the literary world. The event, commissioned by Government, is being organised by the organisers of The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival and the Blenheim Palace Literary Festival. Reflecting Gibraltar’s unique history, located between the cultures of Europe and North Africa, and at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, the Festival will celebrate these fusions, as well as Gibraltar’s centuries as a British Citadel and as a great staging post for international travel and commerce. A set of three commemorative stamps were issued by Gibraltar in May to mark the Festival. More than 70 novelists, authors and writers will be flying into Gibraltar to speak at the Festival from the UK, the USA, India, Morocco, Spain, Italy, Sri Lanka, France and The Netherlands and will be joined by Gibraltar writers. The focus for the inaugural Festival will be the Garrison Library, founded in 1793 for officers of the Garrison and opened by HRH The Duke of Kent in 1804. Transferred to HM Government of Gibraltar in 2011, the Library’s handsome ballroom has now been restored and will be the Green Room for the Literary Festival. Other Festival venues will include: King’s Chapel; City Hall; St Andrew’s Church; King’s Bastion; the Cathedral of The Holy Trinity and John Mackintosh Hall.

G.K. Chesterton

at the Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival 2013 G.K. Chesterton, 1874 to 1936, was one of the greatest literary figures in Britain in the early 20th century, described by George Bernard Shaw as ‘A man of colossal genius’. He was a prolific novelist (80 books), literary and social critic and historian, short story writer (some 200) poet and essayist (4,000 essays). His Father Brown novels and works such as ‘The Napoleon of Notting Hill’ and his poem ‘The Rolling English Road’ were some of the most widely read of the Age. A convert to Catholicism in 1922, Chesterton with his co-religionist, Hilaire Belloc, was a leading theologian and promoter of his faith. Chesterton wrote a weekly column for thirty years in ‘The Illustrated London News’ and major articles for decades in ‘The Daily News’. For the final four years of his life, Chesterton broadcast 40 BBC Radio talks a year. He influenced a whole range of his contemporaries and is still quoted as an inspiration by writers today. His paternal great grandfather, grandfather and father were engaged in the family business of selling property, which was established in London in 1805 and is now worldwide, including in Gibraltar since 2008. The talk will be given by the distinguished literary critic, biographer and novelist, D.J. Taylor. Personal Income Tax

Special Tax Status for Individuals

(i) Allowances Based System

(i) High Net Worth Individuals (Category 2)

Tax is calculated on net taxable income, after being reduced by allowances and deductibles.

Persons with net wealth of £2M+ can apply to pay tax only on their first £80,000 of taxable income, equivalent to tax of approximately £29,200, but subject to a minimum of £22,000.

Individuals can opt to be taxed under one of two systems, whichever is most advantageous.
