WELCOME TO THE SHOW! Hi-Fi shows are always interesting, always thoughtprovoking, always educational, and very often great places it you’re looking for a one-off hi-fi bargain (it’s amazing how often exhibitors will give you a fabulous price on a product, just so they don’t have to repack it and put it back on a showroom floor). But visiting a show isn’t always a whole lot of fun… at least not unless you’ve done some preparation, and given some thought to your visit. Here, we look at tactics that will guarantee a great day out… or even a fabulous weekend!

GUIDE INDEX Exhibitors / Floorplans.......6-8 Product List............................10 Brands A-Z..............................13

ORGANISERS Justin Bird - Director justin@chestergroup.org Roy Bird - Founder & Chairman roy@chestergroup.org Scott Humphrey Marketing & Creative Director scott@chestergroup.org Phil Nease - Sales Manager phil@chestergroup.org www.vancouveraudioshow.com www.chestergroup.org Vancouver Audio Show ‘15 is owned and organised by Chester GRP Exhibitions (CANADA) Ltd. First, you’re going to enjoy the show a lot more if you have the company of a likeminded friend, not only for conversation, but also so that you can compare notes, so make a few phone calls right now. While you’re at it, remember that queuing for tickets is rarely any fun at all (though we have met some like-minded audiophiles in hi-fi show queues!), so take a few moments before you continue readying to buy your tickets online, right now. You’ll also save a few bucks on the entrance fee. While you’re at it, think about investing in a weekend pass… the number of times we’ve got home on Saturday night and realised we really wanted to have another listen in a specific room… well, so often we’ve now wised-up! Arriving early at a show means you’re going to beat most of the crowds, because few people like waking up early on a weekend, even audiophiles. The rooms will be less crowded (particularly on Sunday mornings!) and corridors will be easier to negotiate. (To be frank, we’ve also found the staff in demonstration rooms a lot chattier in the mornings than they are late in the afternoon…. though early on Sunday mornings, some are not at their best.) And if you really don’t want to arrive early, a good trick for latecomers is to start your show at the room that’s the furthest away from the entrance and work

backwards, since most people start at the beginning and work forward. This way, you’ll at least start auditioning in uncrowded rooms! You’ll also have more fun if you pre-plan your room visits. Make sure you go to the rooms you most want to see first, and hear the gear you most want to hear. This is important because your hearing will be at its best early on (aural acuity tends to fade with increased exposure to sound… especially loud sounds) and also your musical interest will be at maximum. (If you use the same music repeatedly, your passion for it will diminish after hours of repeated playback, even if you’re listening to one of your all-time favourites.) Speaking of which, take a few demo discs, so you can be sure of hearing music you like, rather than music the demonstrators think will best showcase their systems. And if you’re a fan of electronic delivery, take some music on a stick, plus have a few ready to go on your phone … we really wouldn’t advise taking your laptop!

MAKE THE MOST OF THE SHOW PLAN, OR WANDER... You can plan your journey around the Hotel using the maps and room listings in this show program, or just wander the floors listening out for beautiful sounds. Look out for our show staff who can point you where you want to go. RELAX... Remember to spend time relaxing and listening — that’s what hotel-based audio shows are all about! It’s not like a big open-floor exhibition hall where you might walk past a dozen small stands avoiding eye contact — everyone at this show is here to answer your questions, and to demonstrate the joys of quality audio in real room environments. So don’t rush, and don’t be shy.

THE POWER OF THOUGHT! THE POWER OF THOUGHT It never ceases to amaze me how powerful a simple thought can turn into a most powerful event. Speaking for myself, if I think I can turn an exciting idea into a reality, and I have always been prepared to give it a try. Happily this approach also underwrites what the Chester Group is all about. Of course, not everything reaches the table of success, but just as in every other aspect of life nothing is guaranteed. But back to the power of thought . . last year, at the Montreal Audio Show, an exhibitor, whom I recognised very well, but couldn’t quite name, approached me. I, of course, said, “Nice to see you again John”.

Now as those around me will know only too well, one of my weaknesses in life is remembering names, so ‘John’ is my default setting, and this tactic ensures I get to know the correct name in response. Anyway, ‘John’ then said to me, “Roy do a show in Vancouver and I‘ll pay you now” . . well offers like that do not grow on trees in this – or any! – industry, but with no venue, date or even knowledge of its potential to hand, all I could say was ‘of course’ I will be in touch. Which, ultimately I’m very pleased to report I did. It’s now just over 12 months since that chance encounter and we have created a most encouraging start here with this new event in the calendar; but isn’t it Pat’s Audio Art will debuting in North America, the Jadis I-50 Class A integrated tube amplifier, Room #626.

fascinating to consider that if I had not been in that room that night, or my colleague had not been either, or perhaps we had been engaging with others, then this show would simply not have happened? A chance encounter, a chance comment, which on this occasion fell on fertile ground. As I say nothing ever amazes me more than the power of thought, and what, in the right hands, it can lead to. We all hope this is the start of something great and sustainable. . thank you ‘John’.
