Adding to Your Circle Connect. Learn. Grow.
I
t’s that time of year when we take a look back at the previous 12 months and take stock. So, Chamber members, how did we do? More specifically, how did we do at achieving our Chamber mission of helping our community connect, learn, and grow? Connect: Since 1976 (our 43rd year now!) we have been a constant in the community — connecting people at our committee meetings, networking events, introductions, and through our marketing and advertising. Learn: We offer our members a steady stream of business education programs — Business Over Breakfast, Lunch ‘n’ Learn, General Membership Meetings, Round Tables, Leadership Chesterfield, and various conferences. Grow: We are over 678 members strong and growing — making us the largest Chamber in St. Louis County. As a Chamber, I’d say we’re moving in the right direction. How about you personally? Are you taking advantage of all of the opportunities we make available to help you connect, learn and grow? We offer so many different events and programs throughout the year — and I invite you to join us in 2019. We will have our 7th Annual Casino Night on February 1, our 9th Business EXPO
on March 7, two golf tournaments (spring and fall), two runs (the 2nd Annual Blossom Bolt on April 20 and the 18th Annual Pumpkin Run on October 19), our 32nd Annual Free Summer Concert Series kicking off at Faust Park on June 4, and our signature Winter Festival on December 6. New this year are the chance to travel with the Chamber to Ireland for eight days in October Nora Amato and starting leads groups to help members grow their businesses by sharing referrals. Reinventing our Chesterfield Young Professionals (CYP) and our Connecting Chamber Women (CCW) groups is also on our slate for 2019. If you have ever considered joining CYP or CCW, now is the time to get on board. Our General Membership Meetings are open to the community. Consider joining us January 16 at Meadowbrook Country Club as we celebrate the winners of our 2018 Chamber awards. We are fortunate to have so many talented, dedicated and engaged members — and this meeting is an excellent opportunity to connect with them. Still looking for a New Year’s resolution? Here’s one: Add to your circle. Adding to your circle means more people to market your businesses to, to network with, to give ideas to and get ideas from. And it’s easy to do when you join the Chamber, join a committee and attend events. As I always say at our New Member Orientation meetings, “You cannot win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket.” If you don’t attend our events, we cannot connect you to the ones you want to meet. Looking forward to connecting, learning and growing with you in 2019! Warm Regards,
“Support the St. Louis County Parks Foundation”

We’ve Got Your Back By Mike Hejna
Letter from the board.
A
t a November 5 Chesterfield City Council meeting, I spoke in favor of fairness for one of our Chamber members, Lowe’s. Joining me at this meeting — and at an October Planning Commission meeting about the same topic — were the Chamber’s Executive Director Nora Amato and fellow board members Brian Voyles and Peri Periasamy. We attended the Council meeting that night as representatives of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce to make our case for leveling the competitive playing field by allowing Lowe’s to open for business at the same time as its competitor, The Home Depot. Two past ordinances had unintentionally put Lowe’s at a significant disadvantage — mandating that it open no earlier than 7 a.m., while its competitor, literally a stone’s throw away, could open at 6 a.m. This provided The Home Depot an unfair competitive advantage, as many local contractors head out early in the morning to purchase the home improvement supplies they need to complete their daily projects. It didn’t take any heroics on my part to convince the Council to do the right thing. They quickly approved the ordinance allowing Lowe’s to adjust its opening time to that of its competitor. But as I spoke to the Council, I knew that my three Chamber colleagues in attendance that night had my back. It was a good feeling, and it reminded me of the power of being supported by a united team. One of my roles on the Chamber is to chair the CUCO (Chamber Understanding City Operations) committee. We meet monthly with city officials to talk about matters that are important to our members. We are, essentially, your voice in city hall. I’m guessing that many of our Chamber members are unaware of what CUCO and other Chamber committees and leaders are doing to protect their interests. But, rest assured, just like Nora and Peri and Brian had my back during that November city council meeting, we’ve got yours. And if you were a fly on the wall in our board meetings, you would hear us circling back to the same topic again and again: How can we better support our members? What can we do to promote their interests? chesterfieldmochamber.com
As my example above shows, when it comes to advocating for our members, we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk. They say there is strength in numbers. Our Chamber is more than 600 members strong. Each us can play a role in supporting one another, and that support can come in many forms. It doesn’t have to be as formal as speaking on behalf of a fellow member at a city meeting. It can be as simple Mike Hejna as passing along a card or a name, or attending a chamber member’s charity event. Whatever each of us does to buoy our fellow members, lifts us all. I represent the entire Chamber Board in saying: We’ve got your back!
Mike Hejna is president and CEO of Gundaker Commercial Group, treasurer of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and chair of the Chamber’s CUCO committee.

O
ne-room schoolhouses in the Chesterfield area included the Chesterfield School and the Bellefontaine School. Chesterfield School served the areas of eastern Gumbo and the town of Chesterfield. It was built in 1908 and was located at 16758 Wild Horse Creek Road. According to William L. Thomas, the first school board was comprised of Robert Coulter, who served as the president; Frank Glaser, who was the clerk; and Albert Wilmas, who was the director. The fact that these men were willing to take time out of their busy lives to serve on a school board shows how
important this institution was to the local community. When the original wooden school building burned down in 1924, it was replaced with a larger brick structure on the same site the very next year. In 1951, a new Chesterfield School was built four miles west of the original school at 17700 Wild Horse Creek Road and was incorporated into the Rockwood School District. Garlin Kellison, a teacher from Bonhomme School, became the first principal of the new Chesterfield School. Mr. Frank Bube purchased the old brick school in 1960 and converted it into a private residence, where he lived for the next forty-four years.

Today, the Bube residence is gone and a new house is being built on the site. The nearby community of Bellefontaine (Hilltown) also had its own one-room schoolhouse known as Bellefontaine School located at 14950 Conway Road. On January 28, 1860, Samuel Conway, son of pioneer Joseph Conway Senior, and Samuel’s wife Mary Ellen sold 31+ acres of land along Conway Road for one dollar to Maury Eberwein, George Smith and Joseph Brookes, who were the school trustees of School District Number Four. A frame schoolhouse was eventually erected on one acre of this tract of land by the inhabitants of the school district. Although the exact date the school was built is unknown, by 1896 the student population had outgrown the one room and a two-room brick schoolhouse replaced it. William L. Thomas lists the members of the school board in 1911 as George Burkhardt, president; Herman Stemme, clerk; and H. M. Seiler, director. The school not only provided the three Rs – reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmatic—but it also held rhythm band performances, presented plays with historical themes and conducted formal graduation ceremonies. In 1910, the school became chesterfieldmochamber.com
part of District 27, and in 1954, it was incorporated into the Parkway School District. Parkway sold the building in 1960 to Norman J. Sutter, who converted it into a private residence. Today, the August Hill gated community occupies the site. Many of the family names under the photographs are commemorated throughout modern Chesterfield. Some examples are: Hilltown Village Center, August Hill and Lydia Hill Drives, Eberwein Dog Park, Stemme Drive, Herman Stemme Office Park, Burkhardt Place, Eatherton Road, Swingley Ridge Road, Schoettler Road and Fresh Air – Weinrich Heating and Cooling Company. 100+ Men Who Care has started a St. Louis chapter. Led by Walnut Grill owner and Chamber Board Director Eric Vogel, the chapter’s sole purpose is to raise money for local charities four times a
year. Once every quarter, individuals meet for a social gathering, and each writes a check for $100. The men then nominate local charities and vote on which one will receive their donations the following week. During the December 11th meeting, the 30 men in attendance chose St. Louis
Crisis Nursery to present their $3,000 in donations. The chapter is on its way to growing to more
than 100 members by the first quarter of 2019. The next meeting is Tuesday, February 12 at 6 p.m. at the Walnut Grill in Ellisville. For more information, email Eric Vogel at eric.vogel@eatwalnut.com or check out 100plusmenstl.org.

Text Neck – Fad or For Real? By Chris Collier
T
ext neck, or tech neck, is a term that seems to be commonly tossed around nowadays. So, what exactly does it mean? Put simply, it refers to the poor postures and positions that we put ourselves in when using our electronic devices. I don’t think anybody will argue with the increasing trend of technology in our society.
As society continues to rely of technology, I believe that the ramifications of text neck and poor posture will increase. Just look around! Human beings, once thought of as social animals, sit in groups amongst each other staring at their digitized screens in silence. To make matters worse, Chris Collier the causes of text neck and poor posture are not limited to cell phone use. Computers, tablets — and even driving a car — are all perpetuators of poor posture. The uses of these devices seem to have one thing in common, flexed postures. Flexed posture involves excessive forward head positioning, slouched shoulders, and a rounded spine (especially the upper back). These characteristics typically result in a common term in the rehab and fitness world, upper cross syndrome. This posture is a problem not because it looks unappealing, but because of the ramifications it has on the musculoskeletal system. Our body was designed for a specific reason, movement. Continued slouching, regardless of cell phone use, ultimately causes restrictions in our spine and adaptive changes within our muscles. We often find that certain muscles become “tight” or “short” while others become “weak” or “long.” This is obviously an oversimplification, but the basic principles are consistent when evaluating people who work jobs based around technology. Not surprisingly, these postural characteristics seem to be more prevalent in our younger populations. All in all, prolonged poor posture when using technology has contributed to us becoming an imbalanced mess, resulting in neck pain, low back pain, and headaches. So, what can you do? At Elite Chiropractic and Performance, we will assess you in a chesterfieldmochamber.com
comprehensive manner which includes discussing your lifestyle and habits — and possibly calling you out on your posture! Treatment consists of joint manipulation/mobilization and various soft tissue techniques to help remedy the effects of text neck and poor posture. Exercises are implemented to further help balance the body out. We will design a personalized home exercise program for you to employ while at work or at the gym to help you maintain positive results. The ultimate goal is to optimize the individual so that they can move well and move often. So, correct your kids, correct yourselves, and most importantly, get checked out! In the long run, your body will thank you. It’s the only one you have!

SPARK! Engineering Provides Real-World Experience for Parkway Students
S
park! Engineering is a high school course. But school is the last thing Brandon Franck wants his students thinking about.
“If it looks like school, if it smells like school, we don’t want it,” he says. “We want it to feel like work.” Franck is the Spark! Engineering Program Director for the Parkway School District. The program is part of the nationally recognized CAPS (Center for Advanced Professional Studies) Network and shares space with the SPARK! Incubator entrepreneurial program at Chesterfield Mall. Learning by Doing Like all CAPS programs, the hallmark of Spark! Engineering is experiential learning: students solve real-world problems using industry standard tools under the mentorship of professionals working in the field. Parkway South senior, Spencer Hoskins, says Spark! is “all about getting experience rather than learning in a regular classroom setting.” “What you learn is what you experience, and anything you need to learn, you learn on your own through research or through experiments,” Hoskins says. Hoskins and fellow South senior, Quinn Paszek, are working on a prototype for a new hand dryer for public restrooms that would kill germs and be energy efficient. “All the information that we’ve gathered, we’ve had to find ourselves,” Hoskins explains. “The whole process of making a hand dryer, we are going to have to figure it out and learn it for ourselves. It’s about getting real-life engineering experience — compared to just learning the principles in

mechanics and physics behind it like most classes do.” Paszek appreciates the autonomy the Spark! program allows students. “I like Spark! because we got to pick this project,” Paszek explains. “No one said you have to do this topic. And we get to the spend the entire year on it. It’s not like a unit. We get August to May to work on it.” Flexibility and breaking away from the regular classroom routine make Spark! appealing to South junior Adam Heskett, too. “I think it’s a really neat opportunity because we get to have a little more freedom in what we do,” Heskett says. As an example, Heskett talked about spending one afternoon interviewing people at

South junior Adam Heskett with his community garden project.
Crown Candy Kitchen to discuss the project he and a fellow classmate are working on this year. “We wanted to help with the abandoned buildings problem in the St. Louis area, specifically the Old North neighborhood which is the area of Crown Candy,” Heskett says. “We were trying to decide what we could actually manage to do in a one-year class. So we decided we could revive a community garden. Our goal is to revive one in a way that both includes people who want to garden and to incorporate local artists from the area.” Students even have latitude in the types of engineering they use to solve their problems. Heskett describes the community garden project as process engineering. “Ours is more of designing the process rather than engineering a project — so compared to all the
other kids we kind of have an odd thought process,” he explains. Three Program Pillars Franck says the simplest way to explain Spark! Engineering is to break it down into its three components: 1) Project Lead the Way Engineering Design and Development Capstone Project: “They start with a problem, just like any engineer, and they research that problem. And they will eventually create a working prototype to solve that problem and then defend their project in a presentation to a board of real engineers,” Franck says. At the end of this school year, The Engineers’ Club of St. Louis will host those defense presentations which Franck says will be a “very nerve wracking” experience for the students, but very valuable as the engineers can offer their expertise about each student project. 2) Professionalism: Franck calls these “soft skills.” This involves learning all the facets of working as a professional in the field, including dressing for success, communicating and presenting effectively, writing a resume, and learning how to go up to someone and shake hands. In October, Spark! Engineering students put these skills to the test when they participated in a networking event with 26 Boeing Engineering Career Foundation Program (ECFP) employees. 3) Career exploration: “I wanted to be a teacher when I was in high school, and I saw what teachers

do on a daily basis,” says Franck. “These students are told ‘you’re good at science, you’re good at math, you should be an engineer.’ They’ve never seen what an engineer’s doing on a daily basis. Trying to provide that opportunity for them is one of the pillars of Spark! Engineering.” The program offers multiple ways for students to explore potential engineering careers. “We have had engineering firms come in and talk to the students. Just last week, we went to MODOT’s transportation management facility in Chesterfield and they talked about all the civil engineering that goes into keeping our roads safe,” says Franck. “We’ve also been through manufacturing facilities and looking at the mechanical engineering that goes into running a manufacturing facility. I’ve had students go to CBB Transportation every Friday for the past month — students job shadow and see what their civil engineers are doing.” Students also toured Ranken Technical College and St. Louis University, and the associate dean of engineering at the University of Illinois visited Spark! and spoke to the students. Every Type of Student Can Excel Currently, 25 students — mostly seniors — from all Parkway high schools participate in the program. Franck expects this number would be higher but students meet daily or every other day at the Chesterfield Mall location from 11:45 a.m.2:15 p.m., which makes it difficult to fit into most students’ schedules. As far as what types of students excel in Spark!, Franck says “there’s no one particular student who can succeed in this program.” “You can have a straight C student who just operates better in this independent environment where you are working on your own individual project,” he says. “Then you can have that straight A student — ‘I’m going to be an engineer because my dad was an engineer’ — and everything in between. “It does provide an opportunity for those students who might not be doing the greatest in a traditional school environment,” Franck adds. For all of its valuable experiential learning, professional mentoring and exposure to engineering careers, student Adam Heskett sums up what most Spark! students see as the key benefits to the program. “It’s just given me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise — and I think it’s a lot more fun than a traditional school setting.” 22

“R
ockin’ Wellness” is the theme for the 2019 St. Luke’s Hospital/Spirit of Women Day of Dance, offering a morning of dance and fitness demonstrations, music, health screenings, health information and more for women of all ages. Billed as the biggest dance party in St. Louis, the free event is set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the DoubleTree Hotel & Conference Center at 16625 Swingley Ridge Road in Chesterfield. Last year, more than 1,100 women attended this annual event. “This event is really St. Luke’s gift to the community,” said Mary Pfenning, a registered nurse and Director of Community Outreach and Spirit of Women Network Coordinator at St. Luke’s Hospital, at 232 S. Woods Mill Road in Chesterfield. “We’re a nonprofit hospital, and we do the Day of Dance as part of helping keep the community healthy – that’s our real intent and mission.” She said Spirit of Women is a network of hospitals across the country that focuses on health education and educational resources geared to women. St. Luke’s has been part of that network for more than 10 years, and Pfenning said it is the only hospital in the St. Louis

area to be within the network. “We know that women make the majority of health care decisions in their family,” Pfenning said. “Day of Dance was designed to be fun, educational and healthy in a very creative way, as a morning of dance and fitness for women. Our Day of Dance is the biggest event of its kind among all Spirit of Women hospitals throughout the country. That is so important because we know that if we can help the woman of the family get healthy, the whole family benefits.” Over 16,000 women in this region are Spirit of Women members, she said. Membership is free, and members get a monthly emailed newsletter, a twiceyearly magazine with health information, and information about health events and resources. “If we can communicate with women, the rest of the

family will know about it,” Pfenning said. She said hospitals across the country within the Spirit of Women network had traditionally held an event in February, originally designed to be for the education of women on heart disease.

“But it’s grown beyond cardiac education,” Pfenning said. “Women can experience a lot of orthopedic, digestive and other issues. At Day of Dance, we have clinicians who do free cholesterol and other screenings, and consultations are available with specialty physicians.” Free screenings include non-fasting cholesterol with glucose, A1C for those at risk with an elevated glucose level, COPD, stroke risk, blood pressure and body mass index. Pfenning said that, last year, “over 790 screenings were done. We also offer half-price massages sales at this event.” The fun component is the dance sessions, she admits. “Women can participate in dance sessions like Zumba, a similar Latin dance called Nia, cardio hip hop, and more, all high energy – many women come prepared to dance with their friends, mothers, sisters and daughters,” she said. “We have a Jazzercise warm up and cool down, also to music. But lower impact activities also are offered, such as yoga and Ta’i Chi. Feedback has been wonderful, she said. “Those women who have attended year after year have shown an improvement in their blood pressure and body mass index,” Pfenning said. “Afterward, we ask participants to complete a survey on whether Day of the Dance impacted them to make a healthy life change, and the overwhelming majority, more than 86 percent, said they were motivated to do that.” The DoubleTree will hold the event in February for the third year. “The conference rooms allow us to do more screenings and other offerings,” Pfenning said. A healthy breakfast also is available at Day of Dance, including fruit, juice, coffee, muffins, and yogurt. The event is fun, even for St. Luke’s staff. “All the volunteering physicians get up on stage each year and dance to the YMCA – it has become a highlight and tradition at the event,” Pfenning said. Participants are encouraged to register early by visiting stlukes-stl.com.

“We had opened in July and, in December, we were robbed and suffered $10,000 worth of damage and theft,” Kasten says. “Nora was the only person I knew in Chesterfield, and she was my first call. My text at 3:30 in the morning was to Nora saying, ‘I’ve been broken into, what do I do? I need help.’ She came to the rescue by immediately helping me make Matt Kasten contacts with people to help me board up my windows and to help me understand what to do next.” Kasten, who recently joined the Chamber Board of Directors, says being active in the Chamber has benefited his business and him, personally. “On the business-to-business side, we’ve had a lot of companies come to us simply because we’re known within the Chamber as that niche market for electronic repair and electronic recycling,” he says. “It holds a lot of credibility whenever you talk about being part of a chamber — especially when I specifically mention the Chesterfield Chamber, people will say, ‘That’s wonderful. I’m so glad to see you’re part of our community.’ You’re respected and you’re trusted as a business within the community.” Kasten says retail customers notice the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce membership plaque hanging in his store. “They tend to look at that as you’ve been vetted.” Even more than the business benefits, Kasten says chamber membership has been tremendously valuable to him personally. “I was new to the area two years ago and knew no one in Chesterfield,” he says. “I have made such good friends through the Chamber. It’s a good feeling to be part of that because you have someone to go to for everything. There’s not a day that I don’t automatically think, if I have a question, that I would go to the Chamber. That’s where I go first. “As a business owner, if you’re not part of the Chamber, you’re missing out on huge opportunities and resources. Bottom line.” Study Affirms Value of Chamber Membership Every five years, the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) commissions a study: “The Real Value of Joining a Local Chamber of Commerce.” The most recent, which surveyed 2,000 adults nationwide, affirms what we’ve known all along: consumers gravitate toward businesses that belong to their local chambers. Here are some reasons why: Consumers like doing business with companies that care about their community. Belonging to your local chamber shows you care enough to get involved and invest in your community. Consumers like doing business with companies they know and trust. Joining your local chamber assures consumers that you are “legit.” “You’re a trusted source in the community, if you’re part of the chamber,” says Chamber Board Director Matt Kasten. Consumers like doing business with companies that are here to stay. No one wants to do business with a fly-by-night operation. Belonging to your local chamber shows you’ve put a stake in the ground and are committed to the long haul.
“The Real Value of Joining a Local Chamber of Commerce” Highlights of study commissioned by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives • Most consumers (59%) think that being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29% more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26% more effective for communicating that a business is reputable. • If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the chamber board), consumers are 12% more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition. • When a consumer thinks that a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because he or she infers that the company is trustworthy, involved in the community, and is an industry leader. • When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40% more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months. • When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43% more likely to consider buying insurance from it. • When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.

Leo and Jeri Schultz at St. Louis Crisis Nursery’s Over the Top for Tots fundraiser.
Gem of a Volunteer is Treasure to Local Organizations By Carol Enright Service is a way of life for Leo Anglo of Vincent’s Jewelers
M
ike Sawicki, president of La Salle Retreat Center in Glencoe, calls Leo Anglo a
“gem.” Pressed to elaborate, Sawicki says Anglo is a gem because, much like the jewels Leo sells as manager of Chamber member Vincent’s Jewelers, “Leo is valuable and he is a rare find.” Doing Whatever Is Needed Anglo has been volunteering at the retreat center most Fridays for the past 13 years. “Leo has many talents, and there’s no job too small or too big for Leo to undertake,” Sawicki chesterfieldmochamber.com
says. “I couldn’t tell you the multitude of jobs that he’s done.” Over the years, those jobs have included cleaning toilets, washing dishes, fixing the hydraulic line in a tractor, cutting down trees, mowing the grass, electrical and plumbing repairs, carpentry, rewiring the center’s internet and odd jobs too numerous to list. “I do whatever they need me to do,” Anglo says. This is a common theme with Anglo, who has been active in the Father’s Club at Cor Jesu Academy since 2010 and continues to volunteer even
though both of his daughters have graduated. “His generosity is amazing,” says Sr. Barbara Thomas, president of Cor Jesu. “He responds in a minute. If I have some need, I know he’s the one that can help me find the source or provide the source. He is my go-to person.” Sr. Thomas listed off a litany of projects and repairs Anglo has helped the school complete through the years, including leading the Father’s Club in replacing every lighting fixture in every classroom. “I’ve been fixing

appliances since I was nine years old,” Anglo says. “This is a gift I have. I can look at a mechanical thing, an electrical thing, and figure out how it works. The talents you’re given, you’re supposed to generate rewards with those talents.” “A lot of time, lot of talent, lot of energy — Leo does not hold back on his help,” Sawicki says. “I’ve gotten a phone call, ‘Mike, I’m going to be late. I’ve stopped to help a lady with a flat tire.’ That’s just how he is. He’s not just going to drive by someone on the side of the road and say, ‘I hope they get it fixed.’ He’ll step in, take action and get it done.” Anglo also contributes financially to the center and helps with the auction and trivia night at Cor Jesu. In recognition of his significant contributions through the years, Anglo was honored with the first-ever Brother Marvin Becker Service Award for outstanding service at Lasalle Retreat Center last May. The Cor Jesu Father’s Club also honored Anglo for his outstanding service. “He’s a director’s dream,” Sawicki says. Raising Money & Keeping It Fun You’ll also find Anglo representing Vincent’s Jewelers at a number of charitable fundraising events around town. “One thing I’m proud of at the store is we’ve helped raise over a million dollars for charities,” Anglo says. St. Louis Crisis Nursery, a Chamber member, has benefited from the store’s and Anglo’s generosity. Dianne Mueller, the organization’s chief executive officer, can’t speak highly enough of Anglo. “He’s absolutely amazing,” Mueller says. “It seems like forever that he’s been a part of our family 34

here at the Crisis Nursery. He’s a true supporter of children, and he really believes in anything that will help kids — and especially to help prevent child abuse which is the St. Louis Crisis Nursery’s mission. He helps us all year long in a million different ways.” One of the biggest ways is supporting the Crisis Nursery’s Razzle Dazzle Ball by providing a diamond from Vincent’s Jewelers for the Champagne and Diamond Extravaganza. “There are cubic zirconias put in champagne glasses and then he does a drawing and somebody actually wins a one-carat diamond,” says Mueller. “I believe we are the only agency in the St. Louis area doing that — so that sets us apart. It encourages the community to come to our event. It makes it fun.” The diamond drawing, which was Anglo’s idea, has generated more than funds for the Crisis Nursery. “The stories of the people who have won have been so wonderful,” Mueller says. “One year this young man had so wanted to get engaged to this woman he was dating, but he shared with us that it just financially wasn’t in the cards for him to be able to afford a diamond. He won the diamond that night and, at the ball, he got down on his knee and proposed.” Anglo also helps with the agency’s Over the Top for Tots fundraiser, donating jewelry to be raffled or included in the live auction at the event which is attended by 550 women. “They just can’t wait to see what Leo’s going to donate,” Mueller says, adding that the jewelry donations raise thousands of dollars for the Crisis Nursery. Anglo attends every fundraising event he or Vincent’s Jewelers supports — but you won’t find him sitting at a table. @chesterfieldmochamber
@ChesterfieldCOC
“I’m selling raffle tickets or promoting something or helping people have fun,” Anglo says. “Even at the event I was honored at (St. Louis Crisis Nursery named him Man of the Year a couple of years ago), I was still selling raffle tickets.” Mueller says Anglo’s gregarious personality brings something else to the agency’s charitable events: “He just makes everything fun.” The Amoeba Rule With a wife, two daughters and a job that requires working a tremendous number of hours, why does Anglo give so much of his time and treasure to local charities? He says he lives by two philosophies. The first he calls “the amoeba rule.” “Whatever higher being people believe in, they didn’t put us on earth just to bounce around endlessly like amoebas,” he explains. “We were put on this earth to make an impact on people’s lives — and a positive impact.” The second is this: Service is not what you do, it’s who you are every day. “I’m the guy who stops on the side of the road and changes flat tires,” says Anglo. “That’s what it’s all about. That’s who I think we should all be. Everybody can’t change a flat tire, but there could be someone who’s in need or just needs someone to talk to.” Giving of himself so unselfishly has created an army of loyal supporters for Anglo. “He is one of my heroes, and I would do anything for him,” says Mueller. “When his store got robbed I thought, what can I do to help? I felt so bad about that, so I ran to the store and got a great big apple pie and took that over to him with a big hug. I was so glad that he was OK. “He is a treasure in our community.”

Hear it from one of our customers! “I highly recommend Rock Solid Creations! They helped us with our granite kitchen counter install and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Everyone we worked with was timely, helpful and very detailed oriented. They exceeded our expectations and made the entire process (consultation, selecting the granite, measuring, install, etc.) a smooth and easy process. Thank you so much for everything.”
