Fall home improvement Stay On Budget This Year As You Tackle Fall Improvement Projects

H

ome improvement projects range from small scale undertakings that can be tackled in a single weekend to large remodels that can take several months to complete. While no two projects are the same, every home improvement project demands that homeowners dip into their pockets and spend some money.

decided to dive into a project before they fully realize its scope and cost, and going in blind can bust a budget, turning what might have seemed like a relatively simple project into a money pit. Understanding just what a project entails and how much it’s likely to cost can give homeowners an idea of what they can afford and where they might be able to

“Any role you play with regard to labor will likely need to be negotiated upfront ...” Much like the scale of projects varies greatly, so, too, do the financial commitments required of homeowners to make those projects a reality. but no matter the size of the project, homeowners can find ways to stretch their budgets without sacrificing the quality of their improvements. Do your homework before you decide to make changes to your home, it’s best to first do some research into any potential projects you’re considering. Many homeowners have

stretch their budgets. For example, if you want to replace your kitchen countertops but can’t afford engineered quartz countertops, you might be able to find a less expensive alternative, such as tile, that you like just as much. but it’s best to research such alternatives before you decide to replace your existing countertops. if you can’t find a less expensive alternative, you might want to postpone the project until you can grow your budget. but starting the project without first grasping

its true cost is a recipe for disaster, so do your homework before you find your toolbox and start working. Build unforeseen expenses into your budget another way to stay within your budget is to include budget-busting unforeseen expenses into the budget from the get-go. Whether you’re doing the project yourself or paying a contractor, nearly every home improvement project will present some unforeseen, and costly, hurdles. For example, you might find mold inside the walls when you’re converting a basement, and it can cost a pretty penny to make that mold go away. if you go into the project expecting such hurdles, then the financial sting of addressing them won’t prove too great a burden. but if the mold catches you and your budget completely off guard, you might be forced to overextend that budget or make sacrifices elsewhere in order to complete the project. build some contingency money, including permit and permit fees, into your home improvement project to safeguard against such unforeseen issues. Get to work if you’re hiring a contractor, speak to him or her before signing a contract to see if there is anywhere you can pitch in to keep the labor costs low. You might be able to pitch in during the demolition phase, saving the cost of

paying your contractor’s workers to tear down walls or remove debris you can just as easily remove yourself. another way to pitch in is to do the end-of-day cleanup yourself. any role you play with regard to labor will likely need to be negotiated upfront, but you can save yourself a substantial amount of money on labor if you’re willing to get your hands dirty. Determine if piecemeal is the most affordable option sometimes it makes sense to tackle one project at a time, while other times you might want to combine projects to save on the cost of materials. For instance,

if your ultimate goal is to install wood flooring throughout your home, determine if it makes more financial sense to install the flooring all at once rather than doing one or two rooms at a time. You might save by buying all of your materials at once rather than buying a small amount of materials several times over the next several years. home improvement projects often go a long way toward making a home more enjoyable for its owners and inhabitants. and while such projects can be costly, homeowners who stay disciplined can still get their dream homes without busting their budgets.

Fall home improvement With Winter Approaching, Make Sure To Prevent Soil Erosion

A

cres upon acres of landscape may be under siege this winter, and not by foraging animals looking for food. soil erosion is a significant problem when the temperatures dip, as snowstorms and wind can blow unprotected soil away. What’s more, when warmer weather returns, even more soil may erode from spring melt and runoff. Unprotected soil that is exposed to wet and windy weather can quickly deteriorate. especially harsh winter weather can cause soil to break down, subjecting the soil to erosive forces. soil loss is wasteful and can compromise landscapes, leaving lawns and gardens susceptible to further damage. to combat poorly performing gardens, landscapers may have to rely more heavily on chemical fertilizers and supplements, neither of which is an especially eco-friendly alternative. rather than reacting to the problem of soil erosion, homeowners can take proactive steps to protect soil before winter weather has a chance to wreak havoc. composting can protect and improve soil conditions throughout the winter season. some people see gardening as a spring and summer activity. however, by making gardening a year-round effort — and choosing plants for all seasons — ho-

fessional about which plants are hardy enough to survive through the fall and winter seasons. certain ornamental bushes and shrubs can thrive in colder temperatures. root vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes, are viable in the winter months. Many people plant flower bulbs in early winter to protect the soil and to enjoy vibrant color upon the arrival of spring. if your goal is to plant a placeholder for spring crops or plants, cover plants, such as rye, are an ideal winter protection crop. rye will remain rooted into spring and then can be mulched into a soil amendment. another solution is to use leaves and other compost matter

to cover naked soil until planting resumes. the compost will be heavy enough to stay in place and will add healthy soil nutrients, including potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen, as it decomposes. Place a breathable soil fabric on the compost to help slow decomposition. soil fabric also can be used elsewhere to protect soil and plants where thick layers of compost may not be practical. some home landscapers and gardeners may overlook the importance of preventing soil erosion during the winter. but preventing such erosion can protect resources and guarantee a landscape that is ready to thrive when spring planting season returns.

Add Some Artwork Another way to add color to the walls inside your home without dusting off your paintbrush is to hang some colorful artwork. Paintings that feature bold colors tend to draw your immediate attention when you enter a room, and that quality can make you forget the room is not benefitting from natural light. If you want to go the extra mile, find a painting that features colors which match throw pillows or other accessories

in the room. This way your walls and your accessories are working in concert to make a room more colorful. Rug It Out A patterned throw rug is another accessory that can effectively brighten a room without much effort or financial investment on the part of homeowners. When choosing a throw rug, find one that’s colorful but does not clash considerably with existing fur-

nishings, as you don’t want the rug to draw attention for all the wrong reasons. You have more freedom with regard to rugs if you’re furnishing an empty room, as you can choose whichever rug you like and then choose additional furnishings based on the rug. Homes tend to darken as late fall turns into winter. But homeowners can brighten their homes in various ways, even if they prefer not to paint.

Fall home improvement Take Time To Lighten Up Your Kitchen

W

hen designing a kitchen, homeowners typically give substantial consideration to many elements of their dream design, including cabinet and countertop materials and which brand of appliances they most prefer. but few may consider the lighting for the room as thoroughly. lighting is an important consideration in any room, but most especially in the kitchen, where people tend to gravitate and spend a good portion of their time. the right lighting can have a dramatic effect on the functionality of the kitchen, including how the space

feels when you enter it. the right blend of lights can create a vibrant mood in the kitchen, while light can be adjusted according to what needs to get done in the space. establishing a lighting plan in a kitchen requires a combination of different lights. the main focus should be on three distinct lighting types: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting. Task Lighting task light is beneficial anywhere a person will need to perform tasks that require close concentration, such as chopping vegetables. task lighting shines

direct light onto a surface, illuminating it thoroughly, and it can be turned off when it is not needed. task lighting is generally placed above counters and islands where one will be slicing vegetables and preparing food. there may be lighting over the sink to illuminate dirty dishes. if a kitchen has a desk area, lighting above the desk will make that area more functional. Many task lighting designs include lights under cabinetry to shine down onto counters and eliminate shadowed recesses. Under-cabinet lighting is a relatively inexpensive add-on for existing kitchens. homeowners can add lighting afterward to focus more light onto countertops. Ambient Lighting ambient lighting is another name for all-over lighting that fills a room. during the day, ambient light may stream in from windows and skylights. however, at night, ambient lighting is created by different light fixtures in a room. in the kitchen, overhead fixtures are a popular choice for

some homeowners may want to incorporate decorative lighting in their kitchens. this is the use of ornate chandeliers, hanging pendants and other eye-catching fixtures. decorative lighting should be considered in proportion to the size of the kitchen. therefore, smaller kitchens will have smaller fixtures and vice versa. decorative lighting may be the most expensive type of kitchen lighting, so some homeowners prefer to plan ahead for the inclusion of decorative accents by having the wiring ready and then adding the fixtures over time. lighting in a kitchen can be just as important as which appliances and other accessories homeowners choose for their kitchens. Without the right mix of lighting, the kitchen may not be functional or inviting.

Fall Home Improvement There Are Several Options For Flooring

C

hoosing the right flooring for a home is no small task. Flooring is expensive, so homeowners want to make the best decision possible so their choice of flooring is not one they regret and ultimately replace in the years to come. When choosing flooring for their homes, many homeowners are overwhelmed by the options at their disposal. Each type of flooring can look great in its own way, which is why homeowners may struggle to find the right fit for their homes. Educating yourself about flooring is a great way to make the process of choosing your next floor much less overwhelming and more enjoyable. The following are some of the more popular flooring options you will no doubt encounter as your search for a flawless floor begins.

quickly and is therefore considered a sustainable material. Bamboo flooring is made of strands of bamboo that are glued together, forming engineered planks or solid strips. Bamboo flooring is strong and able to resist the negative effects of fluctuating humidity, which include swelling and contraction. Many people prefer the fresh, bright feel of bamboo flooring.

several times to increase its lifespan. Engineered Wood Engineered wood is less susceptible to temperature changes and humidity than solid wood, and some new varieties of engineered wood include substrates made from recycled wood fiber and stone dust, which may appeal to eco-friendly homeowners. Men and women who want to install their own floors may prefer engineered wood, which is now available in self-locking parquet or plank squares that can be installed without using glue or nails.

Hardwood Nearly everyone is familiar with hardwood floors, which are durable, warm and a favorite of homeowners aiming for a traditional look. Homes with open floor plans often benefit from hardwood flooring, as it creates the feeling of continuity that homeowners hope to achieve with open floor plans. Various species, including oak, maple and cherry, of hardwood flooring are available, and they typically vary in price, with more exotic imported options carrying hefty price tags. More traditional hardwood flooring is less expensive, and solid wood flooring can be refinished

Laminate Laminate flooring is among the less expensive flooring materials to buy and install. Homeowners who purchase laminate flooring have an array of options to choose from, and floating laminate flooring systems can be installed over existing floors without glue or nails. Some feel laminate flooring is indistinguishable from real wood, but the plastic coating that makes up the top layer of laminate flooring is often a giveaway that the floors are laminate and not real wood. Similar in construction to engineered wood, laminate flooring differs because its top layer is a photographic imprint on See CONSIDER, page 15

omeowners who want their homes to make strong first impressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes with strong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcoming feel to all visitors. Improving curb appeal need not be expensive, and the following are a handful of ways to improve the appearance of your home. 1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one with a custom design. This helps the home stand out from other properties in the neighborhood. 2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border between the driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat

and well kept. 3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting. Outdoor lighting also makes properties safer to traverse at night. 4. Clean a home’s exterior to remove mildew or discolorations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other outdoor elements. 5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonal color. Homeowners without the time to plant can consider container gardens, which don’t take much time to assemble but still add appeal to a home’s exterior. 6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to restore color. 7. Add shutters and accent trim to a home’s exterior to improve on the beauty of the house. 8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stain to an existing fence. 9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways to make entryways more impressive and inviting.

Fall home improvement Bathroom Renovations Can Be Simple And Relatively Cheap To Do

B

athroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. the popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms. While “easy” is a relative term, there are ways homeowners willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum.

walls. it is important to note that resurfacing and covering up items in the bathroom should only be reserved for cosmetic fixes. if something needs to be replaced because it is damaged or mildewcovered, then covering it up is only hiding the problem and asking for more work in the long run.

Resurface When possible, covering up what you have in the bathroom is much less expensive and less labor-intensive than tearing out existing fixtures and floors and replacing them anew. resurfacing can extend to refinishing bathtubs

to installing shower liners. those who have unsightly walls or wallpaper that they’re just not ready to remove may consider using wainscotting to cover a portion of the room or even tiling entire

Scale Back on Materials one way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at a fraction of the cost. When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

Paint do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. cavernous bathrooms that look empty may prove more inviting with darker hues. Pick a paint that is designed for bathroom application so that it will inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. Update Hardware a new faucet or some new cabinet pulls can make the room look new and fresh without breaking the bank. Match finishes throughout the bathroom so everything will be cohesive. When shopping for a new shower head, choose a model that also conserves water. this way you will be making cosmetic and energy-saving renovations at the same time. DIY handling labor yourself instead of hiring workers can reduce the cost of bathroom remodels considerably. it is possible to buy fully assembled bathroom vanities and install them yourself. even installing a new toilet is relatively easy with the help of a friend. there are a number of ways to make bathroom renovations a bit easier and more affordable. even nominal changes can give the space an entirely different look and feel, which can make the room more enjoyable and help improve a home’s resale value in the process.

Aggregate: crushed rock used in many asphalt applications. Ampacity: the amount of current a wire can safely carry. Asbestos: a fibrous material that was once used widely in building materials but is linked to cancers of the lung and lung cavity. Backfill: soil or gravel used to fill in against a foundation. insulation if the existing insulation is just level with or below the floor joists of your attic. if you cannot see any of the floor joists because the insulation is well above them, you probably have enough and adding more may not be cost-effective. in addition, check to see if the insulation is an even thickness across the entire attic. sometimes it can be thicker in the middle and then peter out toward the eaves. attic insulation is measured according to its r-Value, which measures the insulation’s ability to resist heat flow. the higher the r-Value, the better the thermal performance of the insulation. in many climates, the recommended level for homes is r-38. if you prefer more insulation, increase the r-Value. insulation is made from different materials, including fiberglass, cellulose and rock wool. it comes in different forms. rolls and batts are some of the more commonly used types of insulation. loose-fill insulation is a loose insulation with no backing that is usually blown into a space.

Fall home improvement Secure Your Insurance Before You Begin

M

any steps are involved in a successful home remodeling project. a common mistake made by homeowners is failing to consult with a homeowners’ insurance agent before beginning a major home overhaul. the National association of insurance commissioners advises reviewing your home insurance policy before any significant work is done on your home. the right amount of coverage will protect your assets both during construction and afterward when your home is worth more. according to the independent consumer insurance Web site insure.com, one in four remodeling projects will increase the value of a home by more than 25 percent, so there’s a good chance you will need to increase your coverage to compensate for renovations done on the home. Many insurance companies require you to insure your home for at least 80 percent of its replacement value. if you have added an extension or

installed an inground pool, you may have raised the value of your property enough to necessitate an insurance policy change. begin by talking with your insurance company and explain the scope of the planned renovations. inquire whether you will need to update or amend your current insurance policy to protect yourself financially during the renovation. this is particularly important for those who will be doing the work themselves or asking a friend or family member for help. While many contractors have business and general liability insurance to protect themselves if a worker is injured, homeowners may need sufficient liability protection in the event a non-contractor gets hurt working on your home. Your insurance company may have other types of insurance to protect you further if you are planning a very large project. Failure to ask about coverage before starting the renovations puts you at risk.

if you will be using contractors and subcontractors, be sure that they are insured and bonded. should they damage your home or be injured during the renovation, their insurance will cover any resulting expenses. however, if they are not insured or bonded, you may be held liable through your own insurance policy or you may have to pay out of pocket. Keep all receipts and document the progress of the renovation. You may need this information to present to your insurance carrier after the renovation is complete. this way you can request a new appraisal of the property and secure adequate insurance coverage. certain improvements may make you eligible for discounts. For example, a new heating system, energy efficient appliances or an alarm system may qualify you for rebates or lower premiums. homeowners may think they have covered all of their bases when preparing for a home renovation project. however, it also is essential to consider insurance needs before you begin work and then again when the project has been completed and the value of the home has increased.

some homeowners may be on the lookout for environmentally friendly ways to handle autumn yard work, and thankfully there are plenty of eco-friendly ways to tackle such tasks. Leaves the tallest task with regard to fall yard work is collecting the leaves that fall to the ground. some homeowners prefer to wait until all of the leaves have fallen before starting the collection process, while others handle the task in stages to make it more manageable. regardless of your timing, skip the noisy gas- or electricpowered leaf blower in favor of a reliable rake. raking not only collects the leaves but also helps men and women burn calories while ensuring they are not creating any noise or air pollution. invest in a durable, ergonomic rake to get the job done quickly and without injury. innovators are constantly reinventing the rake, and now there are designs that do not trap leaves, saving homeowners from the time-consuming tasks of cleaning the rake’s teeth. rake on a calm day so the wind isn’t thwarting your efforts. When it comes time to bag the leaves, use biodegradable paper bags or look for mesh-like bags that are made from cornstarch. these are more eco-friendly than plastic bags, which can take much longer to decompose. You won’t need to dispose of all the leaves you collect. shred some to use as mulch, which can prevent soil erosion during the winter. some leaves can be added to compost piles or used as a soil ammendment in planting beds. Fall home improvement Avoid Problems With Your Concrete By Installing It Properly concrete. •crazing: this is a phenomenon when the concrete shows several interconnected fine cracks. cracks will appear when the concrete is damp. Usually this occurs when cement paste comes up to the surface and then shrinks. to avoid this, masons should be careful not to finish concrete until all water has evaporated and not sprinkle water onto the concrete while finishing it. Using a broom finish also can help.

mix may alleviate major cracks. •staining: staining does not result from concrete installation or finishing. staining occurs after the fact, when liquids or other materials discolor the concrete. this can happen when fluids from a car in a driveway stain the concrete. leaves and plant matter left on the surface of the concrete may also cause staining. the best way to alleviate stains is to prevent them in the first place. al-

oncrete is a popular structural material among homeowners. one of the more affordable options for patios and other structures, concrete also can be durable and attractive. however, because no material is impervious to damage, concrete will need to be maintained, and certain problems can arise when concrete is not properly installed. though an excellent material, concrete is not perfect. even under ideal conditions, concrete can crack and breakage can occur. here are some of the common complaints regarding concrete. •scaling and spalling: scaling and spalling is the crumbling effect of concrete. Very often this occurs from changes in climate, particularly freezing and thawing that causes structures to expand and contract. in areas where freezing and thawing conditions exist, masons should not overwork the concrete in an effort to keep an abundance of air in the mixture. entrapped air will help buffer the freeze/thaw conditions.

Use of chemical fertilizers in and around concrete can also lead to scaling. chemicals can break down the surface of the concrete. this is a particular problem when using rock salt and de-icing products during the winter. over time, something as simple as table salt can etch concrete or cause spalling. the National research council’s strategic highway research Program has found that

Fall home improvement Stay Safe While Cleaning Out Your Gutters This Fall Season

C

ome the fall, when trees start to shed their leaves and winds pick up in advance of winter, gutters can easily become clogged with all sorts of debris. When clogged gutters are not cleaned out, a host of potentially costly issues can result, making gutter cleaning an essential autumn chore no homeowner should ignore. Fully functioning gutters direct water away from the structure of a home and into nearby drainage systems. When clogged, gutters cannot direct that water away, and the result is often costly water damage to the home’s foundation. Water that is not directed away may find its way into the basement of a home, causing issues with flooding and mold. but clogged gutters also prevent water from leaving a roof, possibly leading to costly roof repairs and damage to the roof that can put a home’s inhabitants in danger. When snowfall accumulates on a roof, melting snow needs to make its way off the roof via the gutters. if those gutters are clogged with debris leftover from the fall, roof damage, including leaks, is more likely to occur. clogged gutters also make a welcome respite for unwelcome pests, including rodents and insects. in the warmer months, clogged gutters may make an inviting home to mosquitoes and other pesky insects, while rodents may seek the warmth of clogged gutters when temperatures dip to near or below freezing. cleaning gutters is not that complicated, and many hom-

eowners can clear their gutters of debris in a typical weekend afternoon. but the ease of cleaning gutters should not overshadow the safety risks homeowners take when climbing a ladder to clear out their gutters. the following are a few safety tips for homeowners to keep in mind when cleaning their gutters. * Wear appropriate clothing. loose-fitting clothing should not be worn when cleaning gutters.

such attire is a tripping hazard and can easily compromise your balance by catching on the gutter or ladder as you reach to remove debris. Wear clothing that does not hang off of you and choose pants that do not fall below your

sneakers. Pants that might be a little long in the leg can catch under your feet as you climb the ladder, momentarily costing you your balance and possibly leading to a fall. When choosing footwear, avoid old sneakers or work boots without much traction, opting instead for footwear that easily grips each rung of the ladder. * don’t forget safety gear. Many people forget to wear safety gear when cleaning their gutters. such forgetfulness increases your risk of injury. When cleaning gutters, always remember to wear work gloves, which can protect your hands as you dig into gutters. should you reach into a gutter without gloves on and grab something sharp, not only will you be cut but also you may be so startled that you lose your balance and fall off the ladder. in addition to work gloves, wear a dust mask and safety goggles when cleaning gutters to prevent debris from getting into your mouth and eyes. * Work with a partner. cleaning gutters alone is a recipe for potentially devastating injury. even if you are not afraid of heights, scaling a ladder is not something to take lightly. ladders can be shaky, especially on brisk autumn afternoons when the wind kicks up. Working with a partner when cleaning gutters ensures someone

is below you to hold the ladder steady in case of a stiff wind or if your jostling unintentionally shakes the ladder. Working with a partner also means someone is there to seek help should you fall off the ladder or suffer another type of injury that requires medical attention. * Use a trowel instead of your hands. digging into the gutter with your hands, even if those hands are covered by gloves, is an unnecessary risk that can leave you susceptible to injury. When cleaning the gutters, dig out the debris with a trowel. * dump debris below into a large garbage can. When cleaning the gutter, do not carry a bucket with you to the top of the ladder. carrying something as you climb up a ladder only increases your risk of injury. in addition, a bucket full of debris placed at the top of a ladder may tip over and compromise your balance. When dumping the debris you dig out with your trowel, dump it into a large garbage bin below. if you miss the bin every now and again, you can always sweep up after the job is completed. Few homeowners look forward to cleaning their gutters. but such a task is necessary to prevent water and roof damage to your home. When cleaning the gutters, remember to place safety at the top of your priority list.

Choose The Right Spot For Your Compost Heap

continued from page 10 bagged and thrown away. instead of producing waste, compost leaves and grass trimmings to use as valuable fertilizer come the spring planting season. When choosing a location for your compost bins, be sure to place them a good distance away

from the house but near enough to garden beds. Most yard waste and food debris can be added to the compost pile. Just avoid animal products, which can produce harmful bacteria. Keep the compost damp and turn it periodically to facilitate the decomposition process. soak

finished compost in water to create “compost tea.” this liquid mixture can be sprayed on lawns in the fall to give the yard a nutrient boost that promotes healthy regrowth during the warmer weather. “Green” lawn care can save energy, money and resources.

Fall home improvement Dos And Don’ts Of Finishing A Basement

R

emodeling a basement is a popular home improvement project. a finished basement makes the space more functional and, when done correctly, can add a considerable amount of living space to a home. Finishing a basement pays dividends in additional space in a home that doesn’t require the same level of investment as putting an addition on the house. also, the groundwork for a finished room is already there, as most basements are already set up with a poured concrete floor and some walls, usually cinder blocks. some electrical components, plumbing and the creature comforts of drywall and a more inviting floor might be all that’s necessary to finish a basement. the process can be labor-intensive, and many people prefer to leave it to a professional contractor. Whatever finishing method is chosen, homeowners should follow the proper procedures when doing the work. do start with a detailed plan. Measure out the basement and mark any items that cannot be moved, such as a furnace, water heater or pipes. create a design board that showcases the materials you plan to use on the project. think about ways you plan to ar-

range furniture and consider all of the possible uses for the room. Will it be a home theater? Will someone be sleeping down there? each scenario will require certain amenities and safety requirements. doN’t plan to finish the entire basement. doing so will leave you without a storage or utility area where you house holiday decorations, tools, luggage and similar items. do get the scoop on building codes. Knowing what the municipality allows in basement remodeling will help you to customize a plan that is functional, safe and legal. No one wants to be slapped with fines for failing to follow the rules. Plus, failure to meet building codes could mean the work that has been done must be torn out and redone. it pays to follow the chain of command and secure permits while having all work inspected. doN’t overlook adequate lighting in your refinishing plan. a basement is likely one area of the house that has limited natural light pouring in. With traditionally small windows, or no windows at all, a basement needs ample lighting in its design scheme. this may include a combination of overhead and task lighting. ample lighting will help the room

feel like part of the house and not just a forgotten storage area. do take into consideration moisture issues in the basement. Many basements are plagued by moisture issues ranging from water seepage to condensation forming on walls. these situations may vary depending on the weather throughout the year. certain materials may need to be used to mitigate water issues before finishing can take place. the installation of water-barrier systems, drainage, sump pumps, or encapsulation products could drive up the cost of a basement renovation. it is essential to have a professional assess the basement water issues prior to starting any finishing work. doN’t simply cover up potential hazards, such as mold or mildew. have them treated instead. otherwise, you could have a breeding ground behind drywall that could lead to unsafe conditions in the home. do have a radon test. radon is a hidden killer that can cause lung cancer. because it occurs naturally in the soil and water surrounding a home and is impossible to detect without a specialized test, many people are unaware of the presence of radon until it is too late. radon may be more concentrated in the basement, where the

foundation is touching the soil. therefore, rule out radon before considering renovation of a basement area. doN’t limit furniture choices to one type. You may need to be flexible in your furniture choices, even selecting modular pieces, like sectionals, because entryways to basements may have small doorways or obstructions that make adding furniture more challenging. do keep the possibility of flooding in the back of your head. homes that are near waterways or at low elevation may be at risk of flooding. basements are espe-

cially susceptible to flood damage. therefore, think about the practicality of finishing a basement if you are prone to flooding. if you decide to move ahead, take certain precautionary measures, such as keeping electrical wiring up higher and using a more water-resistant flooring material, like tile or vinyl. house important electronics and items on shelves so they are not at ground-level. Finishing a basement is a job that can add a lot of usable space to a home. Go about the project in the right way to keep within budget and have a room that is safe and functional.

Fall Home Improvement Options Include Covering Or Removing All Paneling In Room

continued from page 2 for ways to transform the look of rooms in which the walls are covered in paneling. While paneling does go up quickly, removing it may not be as simple. Explore these options for giving paneled walls a new look. Paint over the Paneling The fastest way to breathe new life into a paneled room is to paint over the paneling. The texture of the paneling will show from beneath, giving the room appeal without the dark hue of the wood or veneer panels. Consult with a paint store or home improvement center to determine the most effective way to cover up paneling with paint. Sometimes it is wise to lightly scuff the paneling with a fine-grit sandpaper so that the paint will adhere. Shiny or glossed paneling can be dulled with a deglossing product. Sometimes a combination of a thick primer and color will grip the paneling

and reduce the number of coats needed to cover it. Also, invest in a high-quality, professional-grade paint. It may cost a bit more, but such paint will be well worth it when it glides over the paneling, covering it completely. If you don’t want the grooves showing between the panels, fill them in with spackle and sand down to create a smooth surface before painting. Cover the Paneling Covering up the paneling is another tactic. Rather than coating the wall in paint, consider a wallpaper liner. Liners are essentially a thick, plain wallpaper that is applied on top of the paneling or used when dealing with damaged walls. In lieu of tearing down the walls and putting up new drywall, the liner will cover imperfections. Many of these products can be painted directly and may not require priming beforehand. This can be great for homeowners

whose goal is to cover paneling quickly and easily. Those who prefer a patterned look on the walls can opt to cover paneling with a printed wallpaper. However, depending on the thickness of the wallpaper, this may be a two-step process. You may need to fill in the creases between the panels first, or first use a thick wallpaper liner to create a seamless surface. Cut the Paneling If you desire a cottage or country look in a room, remove half of the paneling, leaving the bottom portion intact. Then place mold-

ing or a chair rail where you made your cut, creating a wainscoting effect. The top portion of the wall can be painted, while the bottom portion can be left as the wood color or painted a complementary color. Remove the Paneling The most labor-intensive way to give a paneled room a new look is to remove the paneling. Pry at a portion of the paneling in an inconspicuous spot in the room to determine which method was used to install the paneling. Some people only tack it into place with small, finishing nails, while oth-

ers glue the paneling to the wall for a secure installation. Glue will be much more difficult to remove and could further damage the walls and paneling in the process. If the paneling is too difficult to remove, covering or painting it may be a smarter option. Small nails can be removed by pulling at the panels. Spackle holes before painting over the walls. Paneling is an inexpensive decorating option that was first popularized 40 years ago. Though less popular now, paneling still shows up in homes and can be remedied with some relatively easy tips.

Stock Up On Necessary Items Before Winter Hits

continued from page 5 •Keep jumper cables, a battery booster pack and warning cones in your vehicle. These can come to the rescue if your battery dies and you’re stranded on the side of the road. •While you’re stocking the trunk or cargo bed, include a shovel, sand or cat litter, a flashlight, an ice scraper, water, and a blanket. These are good emergency items to have in the event your car breaks down in the winter. You can dig your tires out of a snow drift with the shovel and apply litter to increase traction. The blanket will come in handy if you have to sit in a cold car for a while

awaiting roadside service. •Consider taking a winter driving course. Icy, snowy conditions completely change the defensive

tactics needed to navigate the roads. A prepared driver is one who is more likely to avoid accidents and make it home safely.

Involve Your Children In Your Home Improvement Projects

continued from page 5 skills to perform more intricate tasks, but older kids can hammer some nails, mix paint or even cut wood with supervision. Assign tasks based on the child’s age. For example, a preteen may be able to saw wood, while a kindergartener can hand over nails and tools. Illustrate the correct way to get things done and then have children mirror your actions. *Attempt an easy project first.

Painting a room, building a planter box, or another less complicated project can help parents gauge their kids’ abilities. Involving children in home improvement projects can teach them new skills, give them a greater appreciation of the work that goes into maintaining a house, instill a sense of pride in youngsters, and provide a great chance for kids and their parents to spend quality time together.

Use the correct size brush for your chimney to make adequate surface contact to sweep out the debris. Go inside and clean up the residual mess, then reach up into the chimney from the fireplace side and remove any other soot before moving into the basement (or wherever the chimney reaches the bottom) to remove any soot that has dropped from that area as well. cleaning a chimney is a messy task that will take some work, but it is a task that needs to be done to safeguard a home before the arrival of winter.
