Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021 there has been a significant change in the way the country is being run. A difference in the way women are being treated is evident, specifically, in their access to education, employment, and ability to support themselves and their families.

Women and girls fleeing from threats had access to shelters that provided them sanctuary and support. These shelters have been closed and vulnerable women have nowhere to turn to, with many forced to return to the dangerous people or situations. Shelters were more than safe havens; residents quickly learned new skills allowing them to integrate back into society, thus making the best of an unpleasant situation and benefiting the general population.
