WHAT’S THE BUZZ?

Phone: (410) 643-0613

Did you make it to the Annapalooza Music and Arts Festival on August 28, 2010? If you didn’t shame on you and I bet you heard what a fantastic event it was and what a great time we all had. You also may have heard just how incredible the music was, didn’t you? Be sure you mark your 2011 calendar now for the Second Annual Annapalooza Music and Arts Festival scheduled for August 27, 2011. This event may very well put our Annapolis on the rock and roll map hall of fame. If this keeps up we will be in the same league as those in Austin, Texas. The folks reponsible for the planning, organization and logistics of the virgin voyage did a remarkable job. Let’s rally behind their efforts and help keep up the momentum created with this “first of its kind” event! Join them on facebook and/or visit them often at www.annapalooza.org to stay a breast of their next adventure. I am almost certain that we haven’t seen nothin’ yet!

Brand New Annapolis Bar & Music Venue to Replace TK Sharky’s in September

Wild Willy’s Rock House & Sports Saloon, a new bar and restaurant in Annapolis, opens to the public on September 18, 2010 at 7 p.m. The new venue is located in the space previously occupied by TK Sharky’s, and is situated off West Street adjacent to the Annapolis Towne Center. The space has been completely renovated to reflect a new theme, centering on Rock and Roll, live music, special events and sports. The venue includes a fully equipped stage, state of the art house sound system and green room, in addition to the largest projection screen in Annapolis, nine oversized projection screens, plasma screens, and several pool tables. The menu will offer classic American food and bar bites including pizza, burgers and a variety of wings.

Jimmie’s Chicken Shack to rock out at the Maryland Seafood Festival on Saturday, Sept. 11th

New and exciting to this year’s lineup is headlining alternative rock band Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, which will be featured on the main stage on Saturday night at 7:30 pm. Jimmie’s Chicken Shack has special ties to the area, as band members grew up in Annapolis, MD before breaking through on MTV in the 1990’s. Despite gaining a large following throughout the years, the band hasn’t forgotten their roots and is sure to bring a show full of energy to this year’s festival.

“Jimmie’s Chicken Shack adds a level of star power we are extremely excited to bring to our attendees,” said Alicia Hartlove, Spokesperson for the Maryland Seafood Festival. “Our goal was to bring many talented performers to the festival at an affordable cost. We’re really looking forward to showcasing some of the area’s most loved local bands who have continually wowed festival-goers throughout the years.” A festival favorite, The Reagan Years, will be returning this year to perform on the main stage on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The band is known as the East Coast’s premier tribute 80’s band, and is sure to provide attendees with many much-loved hits from this funky era. Additionally, the festival wouldn’t be complete without local Baltimore area blues band, Kelly Bell Band. The band dabbles in soul, blues, reggae, funk and more, and was voted Top Blues Band in Baltimore for 12 years running. Kelly Bell Band has been touring with acts such Maroon 5, Ziggy Marley, James Brown, and Edwin McCain. The band is thrilled to perform this year at the festival on the main stage on Sunday at 4:00 pm. These bands are only a snapshot of the entertainment to be featured at this year’s festival. Have You Heard? CD Reviews

Artist: The Nighthawks • Title: Last Train to Bluesville Label: RipBang Records • Website: www.thenighthawks.com written by James Nash “Last Train To Bluesville” is the latest recording by the Nighthawks. This unamplified set, recorded live on the “Bluesville” channel on Sirius XM satrad, is as authentic as you can get. It opens with the jauntiness and vibe of a Les Paul-Mary Ford recording from the 50’s. It is also the first Nighthawk CD I’ve listened to since the early 80’s. I can still recall one memorable New Year’s Eve show at the old Ontario theatre in DC, when the Hawks were the headliner on a show that also featured the Rosslyn Mountain Boys and another band (memory fails). So it was one of the finest tandems of local or regional acts on any stage, New Year’s or otherwise. Sadly for me, that was over thirty years ago. But the Hawks seem to have found a way to negate time, if not the aging process—some key personnel changes in the intervening years notwithstanding. Mark Wenner handles the majority of the vocals. His harp also plays well off the fine guitar and slide work of Paul Bell on his National Steel Resonator guitar. Mr. Wenner doesn’t play them; he breathes the blues. Muddy Waters’ “Nineteen Years Old” isn’t the first song, but it is a Nighthawks staple—maybe their Sheherazade. Taking some lyrical and vocal license with “Nineteen,” Mr. Wenner and the Hawks have some fun with the song. They are comfortable enough in their blues shoes to be playful. Serious in their approach to their subject matter, they remain free with it, just the same. Pete Ragusa sings the James Brown cover, “I’ll Go Crazy,” and drums on brushed snare throughout. “Rainin’ In My Heart” may be the most polished performance here, amongst a set of the same—particularly considering it is a live gig, with no do-overs. “Rainin’” comprises an organic blues country whole. Every instrument, as well as guitar dynamics, harmonics, and touch is perfection. This tone piece is followed by Mr. Waters’ “Can’t Be Satisfied,” a bouncy, happy tune about ramblin’. Chuck Berry’s “Thirty Days” is sung by Johnny Castle (as is Bo Diddley’s earlier “You Don’t Love Me”) and suits the songs. Mr. Bell has an extended solo. Sonny Boy Williamson’s “ Mighty Long Time” opens with a solid and steady upright bass line, by Mr. Castle, that carries the first minute and a half or so almost by itself. Mr. Bell’s fine fretwork and clean playing “sings” soft blues figures. “High Temperature” is a blues doo-wop, complete with background chorus. The final song, Muddy Waters “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” begins with what sounds like the simple sound of tambourine percussion, setting the pace for this studio assay, another example of the long “Mystery Train” of these timeless blues and R & B practitioners. Nighthawks, indeed. Their name has always invoked the blues, the Edward Hopper painting of the same name (and one album cover), and their professional persona of journeymen roadhouse musicians. As another graveyard shift creature once said, “Listen to them, children of the night. What music…they make.” Postscript: This appears to be the last Nighthawks’ recording for Pete Ragusa. Mr. Ragusa’s drums (and bluesy, accomplished if too occasional, vocals) provided a foundation for the band since its inception. He will be missed. Godspeed. But the Nighthawks will not merely endure; they will prevail. As they always have.

Artist: Maybe Not Even • Album: It Could Happen • Label: Self-released • Website: www.maybenoteven.com By Travis Mamone Meet Maybe Not Even, a blues-rock band led by Jeff K and D.J. Rocco that I think you’ll be hearing more of in the near future. On their debut album “It May Happen,” the boys showcase their budding talent with catchy melodies and soulful vocals. The opening track “Time To Play” begins with background chatter before launching into a funky hard rocking blues jam. As the song fades out, though, we go back to the chatter as if nothing happened. The next track, “Don’t Be Fooled,” doesn’t rock as hard as the previous one, but it’s still funky enough to keep you interested. The boys get to show their sensitive side with the acoustic “December Rose,” which gives Jeff the chance to really show off his soulful voice. The sensitivity continues with “Somebody Else,” a tragic story about a girl’s hard life full of drugs and abandonment. “I don’t know where to go,” says the protagonist, “so I’ll just lay down to die.” Things get up-tempo again with “Do You Feel It Too,” a catchy pop-rock ditty that I think is definitely strong enough to be a hit single. Then they mellow out again with “On the Road Tonight,” which chronicles the lonely life of being a band on the road. “Life Goes On” is another catchy number, and the album ends with the funky “Fury of the Sun.” If “It Could Happen” is any indication of what is to come, expect to hear more from Maybe Not Even in the future.
