Summer Material Workshop Auroville Bamboo Centre, Auroville, India The 5-day hands-on workshop on the many applications of bamboo looked into different aspects of building with bamboo arches, walls and domes. This workshop ignited my interest on the research aspect in terms of new bamboo products and finding sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to housing needs, interior and furniture design.

Our thesis is focused on communication driven intelligent environments within a start-up culture. Our proposal aims to create a constellation of elements that we infiltrate the start-up incubator with, with an interest in creating a communicative dialogue between users and the architecture and investigating their negotiation patterns.

With this objective in mind, this Semiological project will comprise of an amalgamation of sub-systems that co-exist together providing the user with a multitude of information. Some of the sub-systems that are analysed involve generative strategies of organization such as magnetic field lines, interior elements like ceiling and floor, partition walls and furniture taking into consideration configurations, surface treatment, materiality and colour, as well as properties of space such as light. A combination of these sub-systems is more appropriate in making the architectural space completely legible, as each system on its own is too complex to be broken down into specific messages. VOLUMETRIC COMPLEXITY | Behavioural Informations Typology : Material workshop on physical material behaviour Design Research Lab (DRL), Architectural Association London Year : 2016- 17 Tutors : Mostafa Elsayed, Apostolis Despotidis Team : Taole Chen, Fei Zheng Material used : Lycra, plaster Software used : 2D drafting - Rhino 3D Visualization - Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop TIMELINE OF INITIAL PLASTER CASTS Volumetric Complexity, a material-based, four-week workshop focused on the foundational basics of design research through physical experimentation. The methodology involved a continuous study of material behaviour of lycra and plaster through developing stitching patterns in lycra and casting them in plaster. Our team was interested in complex three-dimensional forms, as opposed to flat, patterndominated projects that are generally seen in this workshop. We turned to patterning later into the process to supplement our initial forays into the three-dimensional world. The logic behind the design was to utilise pattern, as well as modelled fabric form, to achieve more complex, volumetric forms. Each experiment was designed to gain a more fine-grained understanding of how the patterning works in conjunction with the fabric to retain defined, complex forms and asymmetrical/symmetrical curvature that would not deform into formless sacks, as is the general tendency of this particular medium. Cell Double Layer Pinch

The double layer pinch is the fastest to stitch, however it severely limits the plaster from flowing through and the resulting voids are generally too weak to support the whole cast.

The most basic operation is the point stitch. It is the most efficient method of restraining the fabric to itself, thus creating tension pockets. POINT STITCH

Line Stitch

Single Layer Pinch The single layer pinch is structurally much more stable. However, the trade-off is a lot more weight.

The second operation is the line stitch. It is used to close off larger areas of fabric and to create voids. LINE STITCH

The point stitch combined with a single layer pinch offers the best balance between structure and weight. However, the tradeoff is the time-consuming fabrication process as it requires three operations for one pinch. For the last few casts we used exclusively the point-stitch/single layer pinch combination.

ENCODED MATTER | Realtime Feedback Milling Typology : Computational-CNC milling workshop Design Research Lab (DRL), Architectural Association London Year : 2016- 17 Tutors : Robert Stuart Smith, Tyson Hosmer Team : Rohit Ahuja, Sooraj Poojari, Lei Wang, Yanling Xu Material used : Blue foam for CNC realtime milling Software used : Agent-based coding - Processing Agent-based sensing simulation - Arduino Visualization - Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop Encoded Matter aims to achieve real-time CNC milling using agent based coding. Flocking behaviour is duplicated using Processing as a computational tool. Parameters such as separation, cohesion and alignment form the basis for this behavioural pattern, and gradually other parameters are added to change and modify the influence and response of agents. Our goal was to experiment with the behaviours of a single agent and ultimately with multi-agents. We developed various techniques of milling during the process and implemented them at different stages. The processing codes were then reproduced in real-time onto blue foam board.

The final stage of experimentation involved the use of an Arduino board in conjunction with light sensors to form an additional parameter affecting the agents in the simulation. We used the techniques developed throughout the course of the workshop and applied them to the light sensor feedback loop.

The project called for the design of a 10,000 square foot apartment complex tucked into a tight urban site with overbearing buildings on three sides situated in the neighbourhood of Whitefield in Bangalore, India. The design for the project is a three-level structure with provisions for future expansion mounted on a stilt floor which serves as parking space. Much of the building’s expression is derived from the juxtaposition of the structural elements exposing the concrete fins on the exterior and the voids created on the facades. SDeG imagined a muted material palette for the apartment complex, using colored glazing and prefabricated wall-clad panels to offset the concrete finishes.

The project consists of two and three bedroom units separated by a central corridor that holds a circulation spiral that orchestrates movement within the volume. Light wells have been punctured in the central corridor space to bring in natural light to the lower floors of the building. This concrete structure features extensive decks designed all around for maximum exterior enjoyment.

The approach for the renewal of the site adjacent to the Minerva Mills in the neighbourhood of Okalipuram is to create a self-sustaining hub where live-work environment can be created in an effort to conserve the identity of the site. The main intent of the project is to achieve a balance by creating public spaces along with private development to revitalize the socio-economic character of the neighbourhood. The project was divided into two sections. The first section focussed on taking up case studies of various urban developed spaces and carrying out a thorough analysis of the site and its surroundings. The second section focusses on the design of the urban hub and development of the plaza and public parkways. 31

The Herbarium and Research Center in Meghalaya India is a progressive research environment that focuses on creating open workplaces which will enhance employee performance and provide a platform for scientists and researchers to engage with traditional medicine practioners. The intent of the project is to develop a research infrastructure that would comprise of open laboratories with experimental bays, private work stations, lecture halls, meeting and conference rooms, auditiorium, open fields, greenhouses and herbariums. To achieve a work-life balance, cafeterias, exhibition areas, open plazas and a medical and wellness center for users seeking therapy has also been incorporated. 35

SITE DEMOGRAPHICS

The project features a stack of one, two and three bedroom units, leaving the façade with a chalky grey exposed concrete finish, that are designed to “harmonize” with the adjacent context. The project aims to accommodate a spectrum of demographics that prefer to dwell in the suburbs, by introducing features such as ample outdoor space, a pedestrian friendly plaza, orientation of the towers to achieve excellent ventilation and pleasant views of the lake and the creation of large spacious bedrooms, balconies and terraces to give the dweller a feeling of luxurious space and freedom. The central element of the design is the residential tower that has been sliced into two splitting masses creating a wide, pedestrian-only causeway, linking the Ranka Colony main road and the smaller dwelling units in the colony. The structures comprise of units ranging from one to three bedrooms, with two elevators and two means of egress servicing all 11 floors in each tower. 39

Unbuilding London, a unit taught at the AA Summer Visiting School, explored the dissembling of a glossy city of London to its constituent, often messier, parts. The studio dissected the complexity, perversity and provocative nature of history through an investigation of Londonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s multiple pasts. Through direct contact, the group unpeeled the layers of London to expose the hidden qualities of the City. As the group weaved through the Square Mile, observations were shared. Critical opinions became optimistic attitudes and compelling constructions in the form of images, urban plans and spatial and material scenarios told alternative narratives of both what London once was and what its potential future could be. 43
