ye ar 2016 pl a ce O erl i kon, Zur ich col l ab orat ion Manu a l D er Hagopi an Ar mand D e v i l l ard The project takes place in the heart of a former industrial area of Oerlikon in Zurich. In 1855, the railway line connecting Zurich to the rest of Germany, was constructed and the little town of Oerlikon flourished becoming a national hub for industrial production and trade. Overtime, the town declined and group8asia is currently undergoing a sustainable mixed-use development project to revitalise the area. The student intervention area of 285 sqm is located on the plaza and the students are tasked to develop site specific proposals. For my proposal, I wanted to relate back to the history of the area by using the element of the rails from the railways. I created one module with a piece of stone, sandwiched between two timber sleepers. Using this module, I created a shelter that has flexibility and porosity, allowing people to look in to and out of the shelter. The flexibility of the modules also allow for the structure to be seats and tables where people could rest and take a short break.

ye ar 2014 pl a ce SUTD temp or ar y c ampus col l ab orat ion Marc o Volp ato The Modern Art Museum (MAM) is situated at the edge of the river, sandwiched between the bustling central business district and the Marina Bay Sands. Being at the edge of the river, the site provides a picturesque view of the Singapore skyline. The MAM is strategically designed to point towards the Esplanade, allowing visitors to connect directly with the other prominent art scene in Singapore. The external area of the MAM is kept free for passersby and visitors to walk around along the riverside. There is an outdoor stage that is also provided for various public activities or events. Steps lead down to the riverside, bringing visitors closer to the river and providing them with a space to relax and lay back. In addition, the shop and cafÊ is situated at the edge of the MAM, along the pathway. Passersby would be able to enjoy a drink while taking the chance to unwind by the riverside. Within the building, the programs are separated to two main blocks. The first block contains the spaces which require guided access and more control, such as the offices, storage areas as well as the museum. This block consists of a more closed façade for better control of the lighting as well as views into the building. The second block consists of the more public areas such as the shop, cafÊ and public exhibitions. In the second block, there is a grand stairway that leads all visitors from the first level to the highest level. This stairway would also lead to the first block, becoming the core of the MAM.

R(A M P)

ye ar 2017 pl a ce E l izab et h Wa l k col l ab orat ion Joshu a C omarof f In our society today, there are still many spaces which continue to be inaccessible for children, families, people with disabilities, people with strollers and seniors. Users with a lower level of mobility would have to take a different path from a typically ambulant person. This results in a segregation within society, which could lead to unhappiness and discrimination. Integrating Inclusive Design is crucial to allow for full participation within society. This is especially crucial in theatres and the arts scene. Theatres are distinctly different from other forms of media in the sense that participants are able to observe this performance once. Although performances may happen again, that exact moment could never be replicated. That is what makes the theatre so rich and alive. As architects and designers, we should not create barriers to access for such a place. By understanding the underlying principles for a theatre and Art Centre, the design for such spaces could be rethought to focus on inclusion. This could result in a new typology of theatres that would be able to cater to people of all ages and abilities. The R(amp) aims to rethink the current typology of theatres and present a new type of theatre that could be accessible to people of all shapes and sizes. Everyone would follow the same path of access instead of having to take different routes.
