Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

2-dimensional fabrication, addictive fabrication and substractive fabrication are the three fundamental type of fabrication techniques described by Kolerevic in the reading. While CNC fabrication become common, it became cheaper and efficentient to create multiple iterations of volumes that increases the possibility on design and 3D printing. It is economical and fast that shoten the process of making digital into physical object. 2-dimension fabrication is cutting a sheet of material by a cutting head running in two axis. Additive fabrication is fabrication like 3D print, it adds materials by layer to creater desire 3d object. Substructive fabrication is cut excessive material from a mass object. Designers can directly build their model with the help of parametric modeling. Such advanced technology allows architect to create physical model from the digital model in the computer.

Week Four Panels & Waffle

I have tried testing various panels on both surface. At first, I wanted to use the complex penals. However, the model is quite small, so using a more clear or obvious panels will be more clean.

The waffle structure is composed by two curved surface to create a twisted form with a wide opening on the top.

Week Four

Laser Cutting

This module has utilise different kind of fabrication, laser cut is one of it. I think the whole process is actually quite smooth. Editing the line from make2D, I will say it is the most challenging because i have to be very careful to put the line in wich layer in the template. As I have many tiny 2D panel, failing in putting in wrong layer will make the panels can not link together.

Week Five

I add variation in the transpormed grid so the cell in it can be elongated or shorten. Apart from the grid, I also use serise and adding Cplane to adjust their the direction of each panels. The different direction of each panel makes the inner part of the model become more dynamic, and create a multi-geometric shape section.

Week Five

Isometric

I created the 3d digital model on grasshooper. I tried serveral solid shape for boolean. I began with the script of sphere thaught in the workshop. The space of the model is created by the platonic solid composing togerther. The overlapped solids made a large space with geometric inner surface. The arrangment of the solids affects the inner spaces. The inner space connect together, linking the holes one by one, addreaaing porosity and permeability of it.

Task 01 Matrix I decide to make two curved surface as putting them together can create a twisted form on the structure. The wide opening facing upward allow the people to has a sense of space when standing inside even the entrance is not wide. This form can make people feel the inner space is larger than expected.

Task 02 Matrix After testing on several shapes, I found out the platonic shape creates lots of interesting angle space. As the shape and its angle extend, the empty space within the model will be connected that make the model more permeable.

Process

The holes allow the sunlight the get it and create cruved shawdow.Therefore, I created my panels with holes.

The twisted form is more clear from the top view of the model.
