Situation Unit Question: Can we trust everything we see and hear in the media? Problem: Students in SWA are outraged. They are angry and feel that teachers and staff at SWA aren’t telling the truth about what is really going on in school. Time Allowed: 8 weeks Client: Students at SWA Specifications and Limitations: Reliable, Factual, Informative, and Entertaining.

Introduction My clients are students in SWA. The reason why they need me is that they are angry and they believed that the teachers and the staffs are not telling the truth about what is really happening at school. To help them, I am going to make a new source of news that is reliable, informative, factual, and entertaining. The form of the news itself is all up to me. My current options are newsletters, news videos, online news website, and maybe magazines. The final product will affect all the students in SWA in getting reliable news about the school. To design and create this news source, I will have to use my computer. I have to finish my product within 8 weeks. And I will use the design cycle to help me create my product.

Areas Of Interaction I think the AOI that relates the most to this project is community and service because I will be making a new news source for students in SWA which are my clients. Designing and creating a new news source, in my opinion is the same as servicing to our community. And therefore I think that “community and service relates the most to this project.

Client Interview.. Why do you think that the staffs are lying about the news in SWA? It’s because I think the staffs don’t give the news from the right sources and they also put in things that is not REALLY happening in SWA. Do you like reading newspapers or any other news source, what type of news do you prefer? Honestly, I don’t really like reading newspapers and long articles because it’s mostly boring things that I don’t really want to know about. So I hope you will put a lot of interesting news. And I actually prefer newsletters. What about the aesthetics of the news source?

I don’t want it to be plain and boring, so I would like it to have colors, pictures, and I want the parts to be organized. What type of news do you like to read? I like to read news that and that is put together would like to read news that is going on in SWA world around us.

is not boring nicely. I also about things and the

What other things would you like to be in the news source? I would like an entertainment section where you could maybe read comic strips and maybe crosswords or something like that.

Client Interview Summary From my client interview, I learned that my client wants my final product to be entertaining, interesting, informational, and reliable. Even though I haven’t decided what type of news source I’m going to make, I know what it’s going to look like. The final news source will have colours and pictures, and it will also have a special section, where we can read comic strips or do the crosswords. My client is most concerned about the news I’m going to put in. She wants it to be interesting and informational. She wants various types of news from SWA and other places. Briefly, I will design and create a news source that is entertaining, interesting and also informational in order to meet all my client requirements.

Case Study Summary

When researching, I chose 3 types of news source. And that is an online news site, a newspaper, and a magazine. I chose those 3 types of news source because they are the most familiar news source for me. And they are all easy to make and it is not that expensive to make it. From the case study, I learned that the online news site is the easiest to access and the most durable, too. But if I make a site, I will have to find an easy way to ‘distribute’ it to people.

Materials To make the news source I will need some materials. For this project I will make the news source using IT. That means, most of my choices of materials will be softwares. To make a good news source, I have decided to use a software called Pages. Pages can do a lot of things, from word processing to making posters. I decided to use Pages because it’s easy and Pages also have a lot of templates that I can use for my news source. I have been using Pages for a while so I don’t think Pages will be difficult to use. If I ended up making a newsletter, it means that I will need to print it. This is when I need to use more materials. For printing, I will definitely use a printer, ink, and paper which will be easy to get because we have it all around the school and it’s affordable. I want to avoid using glass paper since it’s a bit expensive and it’s difficult to find.

Impact on Community Making a new news source for my community will make a huge impact. Since my client will be the students in SWA, they will get the most impact from my product. Students in SWA will get a better, a more reliable, and factual news source. They will also be able to get the news source faster. Other than that, they will also get a more entertaining news source because I will make a special entertainment section.

Summary of Investigation In the investigation stage I have investigated a lot of things about my project. From collecting all the information about the situation and the AOI, I gained more info about the problem that is actually happening, the time I have, and the specifications and limitations. During the investigation stage I also did a client interview. But since my clients are students in SWA, it will take a long time to finish the interview. So, I decided to interview one of the students that is actually having the problem. From interviewing, I learned what my client wants in the news source, what they want it to look like, and what they would like it to have. This interview contributed a lot to my project because it gives more information and a visualization of what my product will look like. After that, I did a brainstorm to help give an idea of what my product will look like and have in it. I combined my ideas and my client needs in the brainstorm so my final product will be just like what we need. I also did a case study on different types of news sources to help me compare with each other easily. For the case study I chose to use a screenshot of a online news site, a newspaper, and a magazine. In the case study, I found out about the prices, the durability, the target audience, aesthetics, and etc. And I think that all of the news sources are very good but in the end, I think I’m going to make a newsletter instead of all other choices but my decision is not final. I also made an explanation about what materials I will use to make a news source. Lastly, I made a slide explaining about what my new news source will impact on the community/society. I understood more about what my news source might impact on the society.

Design Brief I will design and create a new news source for students in SWA. I’m going to make the news source using a variety of softwares that is available in my computer. To make the news source I’m going to follow the design cycle, which consists of 5 stages. The investigation stage, design stage, plan stage, create stage, and the evaluation stage. This news source is going to be informative, factual, and reliable. Aesthetically, my product is going to be colourful and have a lot of pictures. The arrangements of the articles will be thought out based on my client needs.

Purpose

To help students in SWA get a better news source.

Design 1 (newsletter) Pros: I think this layout is really good for my clients because it could fit a lot of news to read on the first page. I think this layout is aesthetically pleasing and will also make my client happy. Cons: Even though this layout fits a lot of news, when seeing this from another perspective, personally I think that the place to write the news and put pictures are not enough. This design is a little too simple and I need to improve in this.

Design 2 (newsletter) Pros: The layout of this design is interesting and different from normal newsletters. I think this layout is not boring at all and will please my client. Cons: This type of layout is interesting, but as you can see, there are not enough space for the news and that articles. And since my client likes pictures in the newsletters, this design should have more space for pictures.

Design 3 (web) Pros: Other than newsletters, I can also make a online news site. This gives me advantages like being able to update it all the time, people can access it easily, and I also can put flashing news or a video. This design can fit lots and lots of things because we have links to link to more news that can’t fit in one page.

Cons: Besides all the advantages of this design, I think that this design is a slightly boring because this design wasted to much space just for links. Which makes the page full of words from the links.

Design 4 (web) Pros: This design can fit a lot of things in. Unlike design 3, in this design the links have small thumbnails for each link. These thumbnails help the readers to get an idea about the news they’re going to talk about. I think this design is aesthetically pleasing and is very efficient.

Cons: But like the other design, I personally think that there are too much links. And it would make my site full of words and boring. And since I need to fulfill my client needs, I have to change and develop this design.

Design 5 (video) Storyboard Camera starts shooting. Greeting, then I introduce myself. I say the title of the news. Detailed information about the news (insert title of the news on the bottom) In the middle of talking, a video evidence of the news

Does the same for other 5 news and then I say the ending sentence, thank the viewers.

Pros: Making a video as a news source is another way. This way I can show videos of the events going on. And it’s easier for people to understand the news through video. Cons: I think this design is not efficient. This is because there will be a time limit. This time limit will also limit the amount of news I can announce.

Design 6 (podcast) Storyboard I greeted the listeners, and then introduce myself and the show. [news jingle plays] There should be about 5 news each less than 60 seconds. Everything is pronounced right and sound/interview evidence.

I mention my opinion about the headline news, closes the show. [news jingle plays]

Pros: I think this design is more personal, because I will be saying my opinion about the news. And as far as I know most people likes to know what other people think about a subject. Cons: I think this is a pretty conventional style of podcasts or news that I heard on the radio. I’m not sure if it will be boring or not but this design is a little bit too simple.

Evaluation of Designs Design 1: I think that design 1 is the simplest design from all. Even though it’s going to be easy and fast to work on, in my opinion this design is going to be boring and not interesting to read. Design 2: Design 2 is the design that I actually like the most. Personally, I think this design is interesting and is aesthetically pleasing. However, this design does not fit a lot of news and pictures that my clients really need. Design 3: For design 3, I think the layout needs more pictures. Because this layout is full of links. This will make the readers annoyed because it’s hard to see.

Evaluation of Designs -contDesign 4: I think that design 4 is the most efficient of all. It fits a lot of things and also links. Unlike the previous design, Design 4 has thumbnail pictures beside the links so the readers can get an idea of the news and also to make the page less boring. Design 5: The design of the video is pretty simple and standard. I designed it based on what I usually see on TV and make it simpler. I don’t really like this type of news and I think next time I should put some interesting things. Design 6: The podcast design seems pretty standard. Like what usually news on radio have, they have a jingle. The problem in this design is that means I need to make a jingle which I don’t know how to do.

Chosen Design:

I chose this design because I think making the newsletter is the easiest and the fastest. And since I only made 2 designs for newsletters, I’m going to choose my favourite design which is design 2.

Peer Assessment I choose design 4 because the layout is interesting and unusual. And websites are easier to access for students in this school. I think the design is very organized and neat. In my opinion, design 4 is the design that fits best in your situation from all. -Ivonne 7.1

Development

Change the names

I changed the layout a little bit and add some colours.

Summary From all the designs I made, I final chosen design is going to be design 2. Even though my friend think that design 4 is the best, I think it’s best for me to just do design 2. I have developed the design so it would fulfill my client’s needs and made it look better. I chose this design because it’s easier and faster to make than other designs. I might as well change a bit the design during create stage to suit the situation then.

Gantt Chart

Material Used Name

What it’s for

Pages (software)

To make my newsletter, I will need a software that is available in my mac. After researching, I have decided to use pages to design and create the newsletter. Since my newsletter is going to have pictures, I will need a camera to take pictures as evidence of the news itself and to make my newsletter more interesting. To get the information that I need, I will have to interview some people and I need the notebook to record the information.

Camera Notebook Printer

To distribute the newsletter, I need to print them and to print, I need a printer.

Was My Plan SMART?

Plan Evaluation

I think my plan is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and fits the Time frame. Because every steps in my plan stage have been done before, and the materials that I need is available to me. It is very achievable because people have done it before and all the steps are measurable and specific because the gantt chart had fulfilled it all. Does the plan seems to be in logical steps? In the step by step slide, I have explained the brief steps of what you need to do to make a newsletter. Here I didn’t really focus on the materials but I focused on what you need to do. The steps were explained in a very easy language so anyone can follow it. Concluding the evaluation step by step plan The step by step is a really brief explanation of how you can make a newsletter there I didn’t really explain what softwares to use and how many pages you have to do. Because all the detail about the steps and the time was explained in the gantt chart.and the ‘materials used page.

Documented Evidence 1.

For the first day of the create stage, I didn’t do that much things. Today I did some arrangements and brainstorming about my newsletter. I realize that I didn’t put these steps in the plan stage so this step is one of the modifications in this project. In pages, I chose the template called ‘imagine’ because I think it matches my design well and is easy to edit and I think my client will be happy about this. For the next lesson, I’m planning to start writing some news and take some pictures.

2.

For today, I started thinking about the things I’m going to write about. And I realized that we are going to have a valentines free dress day tomorrow, and the DaVinci building is also opening soon. I’m going to need more information about the DaVinci building so I can write in more details. I also thought of writing about the futsal challenges but the even already passed so it wouldn’t be nice to read an old news.

Documented Evidence 3.

Today, I have finally finished my article about the DaVinci Building Opening and also the Valentines Free Dress Day. I start thinking about what advertisement should I put, a real one or a fake one. I still have to have inspiration about what types of news I’m going to write since I’m going to start the second page real soon. I also edit a bit of the arrangements of the boxes so there are more spaces and it’s more organize.

4.

I finally start doing the second page and starting to arrange the second page. I made the placeholder bigger, make text boxes bigger or smaller so it could fit the news that I’m going to write. I really need more information so I can start writing on the second page.

Documented Evidence 5.

Today I wrote a news about the International Cultural Exchange Program that SWA is hosting. I decided to write about this because today I saw some students from out of Indonesia and I think it might be interesting if I write a news about it. I haven’t find a picture of this topic because I didn’t have time.

6.

Today is the last day for me making the newsletter. So, I decided to just make one page since there are no more time to continue my second page. I already did my final editing and also arranged the boxes once more. I made sure that the fonts are readable and if the newsletter already fulfill my client’s needs. I also made an advertisement in case anyone is interested in it.

Evaluation By: Sherry

Evaluation of My Performance Investigation In the investigation stage we are supposed to do a lot of things. But I actually think that this stage is the most interesting stage among all the other stages. I think I did a really good job on this stage because I completed all the work that is necessary. I also thought that this stage is easy compared to the others even though there was a lot of explaining I needed to do. I think this stage is really important and since I’ve done a good job, this stage should’ve been a really strong base for my product.

Design Designing wasn’t really my thing and I don’t really consider my self as a really creative person but I do think that the designs that I’ve created were good and acceptable. I was critical about the choices and the pros and cons that I described in the stage and I explained the specification of the process of making this product and the product itself.

Plan The plan stage was the shortest of all stages in the design cycle. But wasn’t really easy compared to the other stages. In this stage I had to plan all of the stages and approximate the time that is going to be needed which is a little hard to do. And the step by step wasn’t all correct because it wasn’t really in the right order.

Evaluation of My Performance Create The create stage I think was the most important and is the climax of this whole project because we were finally making the real product for our clients. I think the time that was given wasn’t enough to actually make a real newsletter with more than one page. Even though the time was really limited, I think I have done a good job on the product that took a lot of effort.

Evaluation In the evaluation stage, all I need to do is to evaluate my performance during this project. I learned that on this stage I need to be really critical in reflecting and evaluating my work. And from looking at my work, I think I should still be more critical in evaluating because in some slides I still have a lot to improve.

Worst Very little pictures Some news are not informative

Improvements in the Future In the future, it would be great if I can have more time to create my newsletter. And I would also like to really interview people that has the real information to put into my newsletter. I might also be able to make an online version of the same news so people that couldn’t get my newsletter still can access it. Another thing that I would like to improve in the future is pictures. Even though I mentioned this a lot in the investigation and design stage I still ended up with only one picture on one page.

Impact on Community Currently, there are still no impact to the community. However, if the newsletter is soon distributed it will really impact the community. This is because when all my clients, SWA students start to read my newsletter, they are going to be able to read reliable news that is written by their schoolmate from a reliable source. My clients can finally read about things that is going on around the school.
