Funk Heritage Center Georgia’s Official Frontier and Southeastern Indian Interpretive Center and a certified National Park Service Trail of Tears Interpretive Site. Located on the campus of Reinhardt University in Waleska, visitors will see a film about the Southeastern Indians, exhibits including dioramas, artifacts and contemporary American Indian art. Roberts House An example of the changing architecture in the South from the mid 19th to early 20th centuries, the original portion of this private home dates back to 1855. On the National Register of Historic Properties. 150 A.W. Roberts Drive, Ball Ground Battle of Taliwa Marker noting the site of this major mid-1700’s Cherokee-Creek Indian battle is located in downtown Ball Ground. On GA 372 at the railroad tracks, Ball Ground Historic Rock Barn Restored rock barn, once home to world-class race horses, is maintained by the Cherokee County Historical Society and is available for private events. On the National Register of Historic Places. 658 Marietta Highway, Canton Canton Public Square Marker noting the creation of Cherokee County in 1832 from Cherokee Indian lands with our community being named in their honor. 100 North Street, Canton Cherokee Gold Marker noting mines extending southwesterly across the county including the Sixes Nine, worked earlier by the Cherokee. After the 1860′s, most gold mining operations in the county slowed or ceased. 100 North Street, Canton Ft. Buffington Marker Fort Buffington was built in the 1830′s by local militia and was one of about 25 stockades in the Cherokee Indian Nation used by Federal and State troops during the Cherokee Removal in 1838. 4568 Cumming Highway, Canton

Gresham’s Mill The site of an early Cherokee settlement and later a gold mine in the early 1830′s. This was also a military removal encampment for the Georgia Militia during the “Trail of Tears” in 1838. Off I-575/Sixes Road, Exit 11 Joseph E. Brown Park Born in 1821 in South Carolina, Joseph E. Brown grew up in Georgia where he taught school and read law at night. He was elected State Senator, Judge of the Superior Court, and Governor during the Civil War. His Canton home stood near the current park. 151 Elizabeth Street, Canton Old Train Depot Once the hub of commerce for Holly Springs in the early 1900′s, now the renovated station serves as a community meeting and special events facility. 164 Hickory Road, Holly Springs Riverview Cemetery One of the county’s oldest historic cemeteries and final resting place of many pioneer citizens and their descendants. Many lovely markers are carved from marble quarried locally. Located behind the Cherokee County Arts Center and Historic Courthouse. 100 North Street, Canton Trail of Tears Marker In May and June 1838, after being forced from their homes at gunpoint by State and Federal armies, Cherokee Indians were marched under military guard along what is now Yellow Creek Road and Old Federal Road to internment camps in Tennessee. 3-mile marked section of Yellow Creek Road and Old Federal Road, Ball Ground
