“ “

i do not want to be obliged to talk.”

I’m not sure if I know what to say.”

“ 03 | Open Doors: My Little Issues

what if we do not talk at all, the silence will make me feel really uncomfortable”

SHY AH...”

#ONE

I USED TO LOOK INTO THE PEEP HOLE, MAKING SURE THAT THE COAST IS CLEAR BEFORE I HEAD OUT OF MY FLAT.

Is the content of the conversation important at all? As long as there was interactions, connections would have been made, and trust would have been built.

#TWO I USED TO SLOW DOWN MY PACE IF I SEE A NEIGHBOUR AHEAD OF ME, WALKING TOWARDS THE ELEVATOR TOO.

“ I don’t like that awkward silence!

05 | Open Doors: My Little Issues

“ I dislike it when I find myself in a constant mind battle, experiencing a dilemma with regards to whether to smile at that neighbour or stare into my mobile.

“ I do not feel like talking to anyone now.

#THREE OTHERWISE, I WOULD LINGER AT THE LETTERBOX AREA UNTIL MY NEIGHBOUR HAVE ENTERED THE ELEVATOR &WENT UP.

“ They should be busy with

their own things.

#FOUR

07 | Open Doors: My Little Issues

I USED TO NOT SEEK HELP FROM MY NEIGHBOUR EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL BE THE NEAREST PERSON TO HELP ME THEN.

“ how can I ask for help from them if I do not even have a decent relationship with them?

“ maybe next time, when we get to know each other better. (note, we’re neighbours of 13 years)

“ I should not

bother them.

“ “

we are of different generations, how can we be friends?”

what if they judge me based on one or two incidents?”

“ 09 | Open Doors: My Little Issues

if i reveal more of myself to my neighbour, what if they don’t like me? I don’t think I can bear to live so near them knowing that they dislike me.”

#FIVE

I USE TO THINK THAT MY NEIGHBOURS COULD NEVER BE MY FRIENDS.

I don’t need anymore friends.”

There is never enough time. When we are willing to open up ourselves to one another, and are willing to give each other time, we become more human and life somehow becomes less routine.

#SIX

I USED TO PRETEND THAT I DID NOT SEE YOU IF I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY TO YOU.

“ it is tiring to keep talking.

what if I say the wrong thing, they may have a bad impression of me.

“ what if they don’t

respond to me when I smile or say hello?

“ I am on a tight schedule, I just want to get out of this place now, I do not want to put myself into a situation where I may need to use up my time.

MAKING SENSE OF THE ISSUES Initially, I didn’t bother about these habits too much. However, after a while. I realized that some habits were really weird. It felt as if I was living each day with fear of some sort. I started asking myself loads of questions and in the end, I realized that all previous doubts and worries were all from the mind. There was nothing intimidating about entering the same elevator as another neighbour. In fact, there is nothing scary about conversing with strangers either. Overcoming fear starts from the mind.

Interesting enough, through a survey conducted with the public, I realized that I was not alone! 48% of residents surveyed will avoid being in the same elevator with their neighbours. An issue is definitely evident. SOURCE: SURVEY 'HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS & COMMUNITIES' POWERED BY GOOGLEDOCS (LAST UPDATE: 28 MAR 2012)
