Welcome to the first ever edition of Director’s Picks, featuring my pick of the top events at the Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

But of course, it’s just my opinion. That’s the great thing about jazz, and the great thing about this year’s programme too, that it caters for so many different tastes. This year, I really believe that we’ve got a line up that contains something for everyone, from legends like Hugh Masekela to rising stars like Get The Blessing, from classic vocalists to full on club nights, as well as the fantastic local acts appearing around the town as part of the free Fringe Festival. Read on and you’ll learn about some of my favourites, but these are just a tiny fraction of all there is to find - visit the new and improved cheltenhamfestivals.com to discover more about the bands, hear them in action and see if you agree with me!

Looking forward to seeing you at the festival, Tony Dudley-Evans Artistic Director, Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival Tony Dudley-Evans has worked with Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival for many years and is tireless in his promotion of new names and big artists alike. Based in Birmingham, where he also chairs Birmingham Jazz, Tony lectures at the Birmingham Conservatoire and was awarded a BBC award for Services to Jazz in 2003. Look hard enough at almost any event during the festival and you’ll find him - introducing the acts, enjoying the jam sessions and soaking up the sounds that capture Cheltenham throughout the festival.

Imelda May J05, Wednesday 29 April, Dakota, 8pm, £10 We’ve really championed Imelda and were thrilled to see her have such a fantastic 2008, with the highlights (apart from Cheltenham, of course) a terrific performance on Later … with Jools Holland and best selling album Love Tattoo.

This year looks set to be even better and I’m delighted to welcome her back to Cheltenham for what’s sure to be a superb night of soulful, seductive melodies teamed with her indomitable rockabilly, bluesy sound.

Tony’s pick for: Swinging rockers and soulful jazz lovers that know how to groove.

BBC Big Band with Dave Liebman J27, Saturday 2 May, Everyman Theatre, 6pm (75mins), £20 Dave is a terrific sax player and truly deserves wider recognition. I got to know Dave when I set up a tour for him last year and I definitely recommend coming to hear him - he’s forceful but brilliant and something of an artist in residence this year as he’s also appearing with Phil Robson and Jeff Williams.

In this concert, he’ll be playing with the BBC Big Band and it’s going to be a fabulous evening featuring former Jerwood Rising Star Hans Koller’s arrangements, performed by one of our greatest living sax players to boot - brilliant!

Tony’s pick for: Big band enthusiasts who want to discover something new.

Hugh Masekela J14, Friday 1 May, Town Hall Main Hall, 7.30pm (90mins), £20 / £18 / £14 Hugh is an absolute legend and truly one of the greats.

Venturing to the US for the first time as a young man he was mentored by Dizzy Gillespie and given a trumpet

by Louis Armstrong.

Hugh’s music is inspired by and irrevocably linked with the struggles of his native South Africa and I’m looking forward to a night that blends jazz with the rhythm of a South African township to create what’s sure to be an inspiring, uplifting night with a wide appeal.

Tony’s pick for: Lovers of jazz and world music, who want to see one of the greats.

The Homemade Orchestra with Michael Rosen J32, Sunday 3 May, Town Hall Main Hall, 10.30am (Doors 9.30am) £10 adults / £5 U16’s, Breakfast not included.

I find that all too often jazz has a tendency to stay in its own little bubble, and I’m a huge fan of breaking out of it. This family event features Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen as ‘soloist’, reciting his nonsense poetry to the weird and wonderful sounds of the Homemade Orchestra.

Michael has a longstanding relationship with our Literature Festival, where the kids just go wild for him! It’s an early start, but come and join us for breakfast. It’s sure to be a great event for all ages.

Pat Martino & Julian Arguelles Double Bill J15, Friday 1 May, Everyman Theatre, 7.30pm (135mins), £20

This is going to be a really powerful double bill and a treat for lovers of jazz guitar, as it features both Pat himself and John Abercrombie, who’s the guitarist in Julian’s band.

Julian Arguelles is without doubt one of our best English sax players and yet still only in his forties. For so long we looked to the Americans as the leaders in jazz, but now that’s swinging to the Europeans and it’s exciting to have a British player leading his American band here.

As well as being a fantastic guitarist, Pat Martino has a fascinating story of losing his memory and learning to play again, listening to his own albums for inspiration. I can’t wait to hear more at the screening of the documentary film, Martino Unstrung, that’s showing at the University on Thursday evening.

I’m doubly excited about this event since as well as featuring two top guitarists, Pat’s also going to be performing with a Hammond B3 Organ. You don’t see many of these about nowadays and although you can mimic the style with a keyboard, I don’t think anything comes close to the truly soulful sound that you only get with an authentic instrument – not to be missed!

Some of the most memorable times I’ve ever known at the Jazz Festival have taken place late at night, when musicians get together for an impromptu jam session at one of the town’s hotels. I’m hoping this year will be no exception, and will be inviting some of our top name artists back to the Hotel Du Vin to get together and see what happens. On the right night it can be a truly magical atmosphere and as space is strictly limited, we’ll be welcoming members on a first come first served basis to enjoy the unique collaborations. Come along from 11pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night with your membership card to see what you can find.

From Jazz it Up! to Jerwood – support the stars of the future

BBC Radio 3 Jazz Library J21, Saturday 2 May, Town Hall Drawing Room, 12 noon (60 mins), Henry Grimes J24, Saturday 2 May, Town Hall Drawing Room, 3pm (60 mins), Dave Liebman Priority booking for members Listeners to Radio 3 on a Saturday afternoon will be familiar with the long running Jazz Library programme, where Alyn Shipton profiles the artists who might feature in the ultimate jazz collection. Alyn will be joining us to make two special recordings of the show which will feature two of the legendary acts appearing at the festival, and we’re offering members and their guests the chance to come and make up the audience.

Tickets are free, and will be offered to members on a first come first served basis until the festival begins on 28 April. Just call the box office to reserve your tickets.

We’re proud to support new projects and encourage creativity within the jazz world.

Our long standing partnership with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation has backed more than 50 young British artists, providing valuable support for new projects. Jazz It Up! gives Gloucestershire’s senior school children the opportunity to work with leading jazz musicians. This year, we’re lucky enough to have secured the services of Sid Peacock, jazz guitarist, vocal artist and composer, who’s visiting schools to work with young musicians on their improvisation, arrangements and performance technique. Both projects are only possible thanks to the donations and support we receive. So please, become a member, and don’t forget to check out this year’s acts!
