ASK THE EXPERTS

Straight from the Source Local professionals talk trends in appliances, window treatments, and building materials.

What’s the most popular color or finish choice

in appliances today?

Stainless is still the most popular choice, but you can sense that shifting a little. One of the new trends you’ll see are matte white appliances. We have the four-piece kitchen in our showroom (refrigerator, range, microwave, and dishwasher) in

matte white with brushed bronze knobs and handles. Customers are also asking about matte black appliances as well. Neither of these colors show fingerprints, which is the icing on the cake!

In an ever-evolving industry, do you find homeowners

requesting more high-tech window treatments? We’re getting more and more questions about that option. I compare it to how we’ve gone from telephones on the wall to cell phones. Within 10 years, I see motorization being mainstream and not just on one window. Right now, motorized treatments work with the click of a button

on a remote or with a smart home hub that allows you to raise and lower your shades with a voice command or smart phone. Many builders are incorporating these options into the construction phase. In existing homes, you can achieve a similar function using battery packs.

You work on a lot of historic homes with some very unique

mouldings; how do you approach this type of job?

Patrick Bryant Southern Lumber and Millwork

Historic replication is a big deal for us—we actually cut our own moulding knives (tools used to shape wood) on-site. Customers can bring us a sample from anywhere and our guys take that provided moulding and match it up with one of our existing knives, or create a new knife. We

then put it through our machines and cut it. We do this all in house, which is a really big advantage to making sure it gets matched up. Details are big on historic jobs and we work hard to make sure our product is as close to the original item as possible.
