When we talk about beauty for me it means being different. Whether it is external or internal beauty, the latter is the most important for me. It has been a long process for society to think like this, especially because of the stigmas of small communities. Even though I was not from a big city, I do come from a society where we are used to family members who share the same blood but little to no resemblance and this is normal for me. Getting out of that environment and coming to a community like Lakeland that still struggles with the stigmas imposed since the city was founded has been quite interesting.
And if you don’t know what stigma is, I will instruct you, it is understood as the behavior, trait or condition that an individual possesses and that generates their inclusion in a social group whose members are seen as inferior or unacceptable. The reasons for contempt or discrimination are racial, religious, ethnic origin, among others. Currently Polk County especially the City of Lakeland is in a high position of growth from different ethical backgrounds so eventually those who have resisted change will have to accept “different”. A curious fact that I want to share with you is that in a survey they say that by 2050 Hispanics in the United States will be the majority.
So welcome to the era where “different” is in style and beautiful.

Cuando hablamos de belleza para mi significa ser diferente. Ya sea belleza exterior o interior que esta ultima es la mas importante para mi. Pero a sido un largo proceso para que la sociedad piense así, especialmente por los estigmas de las comunidades pequeñas. Y aunque, yo no era de una gran ciudad si vengo de una sociedad donde estamos acostumbrados que los miembros de una familia que comparten la misma sangre nos veamos fisicamente diferentes y esto para mi es normal. Salir de ese entorno y llegar a una comunidad como Lakeland que aun batalla con los estigmas impuestos desde que se fundo la ciudad a sido un tanto interesante.
Y sino sabes lo que es estigma te instruyo, se entiende como el comportamiento, el rasgo o la condición que posee un individuo y que genera su inclusión en un grupo social cuyos miembros son vistos como inferiores o inaceptables. Las razones del menosprecio o la discriminación son el origen racial, religioso, étnico, entre otros. Actualmente el condado de Polk especialmente la ciudad de Lakeland esta en una alta posición de crecimiento de diferentes orígenes éticos así que eventualmente los que se han resistido al cambio tendrán que aceptar lo “diferente”. Un dato curioso que quiero compartir con ustedes es que en una encuestan dicen que para el 2050 los hispanos en Estados Unidos serán mayoría.
Así que bienvenidos a la era donde lo “diferente” esta de moda y es hermoso.

This color was selected, according to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, was motivated by nature and “what is true.” Viva Magenta 18-1750 offers one of the most natural and brilliant colors in the world. By 2023, the inspiration for home designs will be motivated by this color.

As the inner-outer life develops, the lines between the two become increasingly blurred. This can include wilder, largerscale indoor plants, as well as rockeries or gardens built into a building’s fabric. The principle of biophilic design is the integration of elements from nature, bringing the outdoors into the indoors, thus connecting the human mind to the outdoors and nature.

If we’re talking about style and confidence, it’s hard not to hear the name Maria Swann on the lips of some Lakelanders. She is a mother, a style coach and a speaker. Maria loves helping women regain their time, confidence, and energy by simplifying their approach to her wardrobe. She is the owner of “Stylishly You” which was established in 2019. In addition, she was part of the team of “Woman of the Year” doing Patricia’s styled.
Sí hablamos acerca de estilo y confiansa es difícil no escuchar el nombre de Maria Swann en boca de algún Lakelander. Ella es madre, coach de estilo y oradora. A Maria le encanta ayudar a las mujeres a recuperar su tiempo, confianza y energía simplificando su enfoque de su vestuario. Esta es la dueña de ‘’Stylishly You” que fue establecido en el 2019. 1. Tell us how your journey as stylist began.
I started as an event stylist. I would Style Women for Holiday events, branding photo shoots, ect. Then I realized there was something missing. The Women would look good for events or social activities, but they didn’t know how to find pieces for everyday wear or felt overwhelmed when shopping for themselves. That’s when I developed the ‘Grab-n-Go’ Wardrobe. Helping Women develop a System, Mindset & Style in order for them to feel confident & get dressed quickly everyday of the week.
Empecé como estilista de eventos. Diseñaría mujeres para eventos festivos, sesiones de fotos de marca, etc. Entonces me di cuenta de que faltaba algo. Las Mujeres se verían bien para eventos o actividades sociales, pero no sabían cómo encontrar piezas para el uso diario o se sentían abrumadas cuando compraban para ellas mismas. Fue entonces cuando desarrollé el guardarropa ‘Grab-n-Go’. I don’t believe that a Woman’s clothing defines her. How she FEELS in her clothing defines her. How she feels about her body BEFORE the clothes is what defines her.
No creo que la ropa de una mujer la defina. Cómo se SIENTE en su ropa la define. Lo que siente por su cuerpo ANTES de la ropa es lo que la define.
3. What does it mean to you to be different?
I feel that being “different” is being unique and authentic.Not fitting in with society’s ‘status quo’. I feel like a lot of people are copies of someone else and they don’t even realize it.
Siento que ser “diferente” es ser único y auténtico. No encajar en el ‘statu quo’ de la sociedad. Siento que muchas personas son copias de otra persona y ni siquiera se dan cuenta.
4. On Instagram, we saw you were thriving despite anxiety and depression. How are you doing? What helps you get over it?
I got a clinical anxiety & depression diagnosis last year and it really shook me. I am doing so much better! It’s a combination of medication, my support system, prayer and counseling that’s helping me THRIVE. It’s not easy to live with anxiety and/or depression so getting all of the help needed is so necessary.
Recibí un diagnóstico clínico de ansiedad y depresión el año pasado y realmente me impactó. ¡Estoy mucho mejor! Es una combinación de medicamentos, mi sistema de apoyo, oración y asesoramiento lo que me está ayudando a PROSPERAR. No es fácil vivir con ansiedad y/o depresión, por lo que es muy necesario obtener toda la ayuda necesaria.
5. Does Lakeland have a stigma? If so, how does this affect you?
Yes it does. I feel as though it’s gotten better over the years. Sometimes you go into certain establishments and you feel as though you don’t belong. I remember years ago I was taking business courses in Lakeland and because my business concept didn’t fit what the instructor was use to, he told me my business “would not make it in Lakeland.” He told me I would need to go to another city to make it. I will never forget that. Boy was he wrong! I wish I could remember his contact so I could send him an email to let him know how I’m doing lol Sí lo hace. Siento que ha mejorado con los años. A veces entras en ciertos establecimientos y sientes que no perteneces. Recuerdo que hace años estaba tomando cursos de negocios en Lakeland y debido a que mi concepto de negocios no encajaba con lo que el instructor estaba acostumbrado, me dijo que mi negocio “no prosperaría en Lakeland”. Me dijo que tendría que ir a otra ciudad para hacerlo. Nunca olvidaré eso. ¡Vaya que estaba equivocado! Thanks to the people that donate Christmas gifts and in 2021 over 1,689 children in Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties had gifs on Christmas.

The four-part limited series brings the story of Black hair culturalist and businesswoman, Madam CJ Walker, to the screen for the first time. The first to be born free of her six siblings, Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, withstood the blows of familial betrayal and rancor competition to revolutionize Black haircare. Walker’s story is one of devotion, shifty ingenuity and absolute mettle against the backdrop of post-slavery racial and gender oppression.
