season outlook

SoCon All-Freshman team last season. He will be pushed by sophomores Trevor Herron (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Joe Burns (Morristown, Tenn.). Freshmen Devante Brown (Suwanee, Ga.) and Austin Sams (Fairfield, Ohio) are also competing for time on the mat. 149: Chattanooga has depth and experience at 149, starting with former SoCon Champion Dean Pavlou (Cleveland, Tenn.). He failed to repeat at the conference meet last season, but still managed a 14-11 overall record and is a preseason All-SoCon selection. Senior Kelly Felix (Franklin, Tenn.) will also be pushing to get into the lineup. He was 2-0 in SoCon matches last season. Junior Alex Hudson (Marietta, Ga.) will also look to improve on his 2-1 record from last year. 157: Senior Dan Waddell (Chattanooga, Tenn.) moves back down to 157 after competing at 165 last season. He was the SoCon Champ at 149 as a freshman in 2009 and is looking to get back to the NCAAs in his final year. The league coaches tabbed him as a preseason All-SoCon selection. A trio of freshmen could work their way into the mix, beginning with redshirt freshmen Jared Presly (Harrison, Ohio) and Trey Stavrum (Chattanooga, Tenn.). True freshman Alex Kooser (Dayton, Ohio) is another newcomer who could push for time at 157. 165: Senior Brandon Wright (Germantown, Tenn.) moved up to 174 last season where he won the SoCon title and advanced to the NCAAs. He is back to his normal 165 weight where he will be one of the top wrestlers in the league. A trio of talented true freshmen will back him up, beginning with John Lampe (Fairdale, Ky.). Lampe was a two-time Kentucky state champion and could push Wright in this class. Cory Canada (Ringgold, Ga.) and Jesse Beaver (Murphy, N.C.) are also former high school state champs who will add depth to the class. 174: The Mocs were hoping for the return of sophomore Jake Young (Ooltewah, Tenn.), the 2010 SoCon Freshman of the Year, at 174. He sat out last season with an injured knee and has unfortunately reinjured that same knee. He is expected to miss the entire 2011-12 campaign. Junior Josh

2011-12 Mocs wrestling

Condon (Powder Springs, Ga.) has moved up from 157 where he won the SoCon title and advanced to the NCAAs last season. Sophomore Levi Clemons (Kissimmee, Fla.) has the most experience at this class, but went 6-13 as a true freshman last year. 184: UTC currently has one option at 184 in junior Robert Prigmore (Southlake, Texas). He transferred to UTC from Lehigh in 2009 and went 7-10 last season. He wrestled up with a 4-5 mark at 197 and a 3-5 record at heavyweight. 197: The Mocs also have just one competitor on the roster at 197 in junior Niko Brown (Kissimmee, Fla.). Brown scored an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season after posting a 19-11 overall mark. He went 4-1 in SoCon action and was second on the team with six pins. 285: Freshman Kevin Malone (Carrollton, Ohio) will make his debut at heavyweight this season. The 6-5 big man cast a huge shadow when he sat out last year as a redshirt. Junior transfer Bradley Rogers (Collierville, Tenn.) will help push the big guys in the room and could see some action. The SoCon coaches picked UTC as the league favorite by a one-point margin over Appalachian State. The league will have a new look with UNCG dropping its program and Gardner-Webb and Campbell joining as wrestling affiliates. The home schedule will be an exciting one for UTC. It includes seven dual matches and two tournaments. The Southern Scuffle heads to Chattanooga and the McKenzie Arena on Jan. 1-2. The SoCon Championships will also be held in McKenzie on March 3.
