FROM THE TOP

A YEAR IN CHATHAM A quick look at life from the pages of the Chatham News + Record 1970 CAMPER PROVIDES ‘STAYCATIONS’ FOR PITTSBORO FAMILY Five years ago, Beth Davis bought a 1970 Serro Scotty travel trailer off Craigslist to take on camping trips. Now, throughout the stay-at-home orders put in place because of COVID-19, she’s transformed her camper — affectionately known as “Patty” — to allow for “staycations” in her own front yard. In the early months of quarantine, Davis decided to tackle a leak in the camper and found quarantine gave her the excuse — and time — she needed to really fix it up. “I said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna make this a little hangout since we’re not going anywhere,’” Davis said. “I renovated the inside during quarantine and then I was like, well, I’m gonna set it up here so we can hang out and have a place to be happy.” Read the full story by Hannah McClellan, published online on July 22, 2020. WITH RADIO PLAY, JORDAN PICKETT MAKES A SPLASH The music industry, aspiring artists are often told, is hard to break into. Witness the long lines of young talent ever-eager to compete on a string of television showcases, from “American Idol” to “The Voice,” and the few among them who rise to the top. Jordan Pickett has heard it, too. “It’s definitely a hard road,” said the rising Chatham Central 6 chathamlife 2020-21

High School senior and aspiring singer/songwriter. “That’s what I’ve heard from everyone and I’ve found it true myself. I’ve had my battles and my difficulties with it.” But far from lamenting those challenges, Pickett is forging forward with a positive attitude and a budding career. “I’m making my way right now,” the Siler City native said, “and I’m having fun with it. We’ll just ride this train and see where it goes.” At 17, he’s recently recorded his first CD — it’s called “Who I Am,” and Pickett penned all five tracks — and one of his original songs, “It’s Called Dirt,” recently got a big boost with airplay on 94.7 FM WQDR, the Raleigh country music radio station. And before the coronavirus pandemic, he was playing a lot of live gigs and plans to return to performing for live audiences again once he can. EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT GIVES BASKETBALL COURT TO GOLDSTON Two new basketball goals were installed at Goldston United Methodist Church just recently, completing the final touches of a project initiated last year by Chatham Central High School senior Riley Michael Lagenor to fund and build a full basketball court at his church. Lagenor undertook the service project as his work towards earning the rank of Eagle Scout,

NEIGHBORS UNITE FOR RACIAL EQUALITY A diverse group of residents, young and old, gathered in both Siler City and Pittsboro to protest the death of George Floyd, speak out against police brutality and show community unity. To attain the honor, a Scout must plan, develop and lead an Eagle Scout Service Project that benefits a religious institution, school or community. Such projects cannot be commercial or solely fundraising. Lagenor observed at his church an opportunity to fulfill a public need. “My church hosted a small service on Wednesday nights,” Lagenor said, recalling the origins of his Eagle Scout project, “and after the youth finished their devotion, we would go play basketball in the parking lot. I felt playing in the parking lot where cars are coming and

going was a little dangerous, so I wanted a place where the youth and even the community could play safely.” Read the full story by Randall Rigsbee, published online on March 28, 2020. NORTHWOOD’S PRIDE CLUB FINDS COMMUNITY DURING CORONAVIRUS Donning rainbow-colored cowboy hats, bow ties and assorted bead necklaces, a group made up of mostly high schoolers held up homemade posters in front of the historic courthouse as passersby honked horns to join in the celebration.

It was Pittsboro Pride Day — organized by two teenagers and attended by more than 30 others on June 26. “I just posted it everywhere I could and got people to hype it up and tons of people went,” said Caroline Puckett, a rising senior at Northwood High School who organized the event with her girlfriend, Lauren Chubb. “It was really, really fun. It was a huge social distancing movement, too, so we tried to get everybody to stay far apart from each other, which was hard because people just want to hug each other. But I was just happy that it happened.” Read the full story by Hannah McClellan, published online on July 15, 2020. JR MOORE & SON AMONG THE LAST OF ITS KIND At JR Moore & Son — a “country store with a little bit of everything” in Gulf — the shelves tell the story of an eclectic family-owned store that stands as one of the last of its kind. Walls fully stocked with work boots and Carhartt jackets quickly turn into rows of personalized store baseball caps, and then there’s old-fashioned candy orange slices, decorative pocket knives and hardware supplies. There’s no online shopping cart and no barcodes. Instead, there are handwritten and stickered itemized prices — and no clear-cut path to navigate the aisles. WORKING TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE DURING A COVID-19 LOW More than six months into the coronavirus pandemic, businesses at The Plant, home of the Chatham Beverage District on Lorax Lane east of downtown Pittsboro, are surviving through a combination of good fortune and business acumen.“We kind of lucked out with the pandemic,” said Tami Schwerin, co-owner of the complex and founder of Abundance NC, The Plant’s resident non-profit advocacy group. “What sets us apart is we have 17 acres where people can come socially distance.” Read the full story by Lars Dolder, published online on September 4, 2020, with photos, including those on this page, by Kim Hawks. TEEN DANCER BECOMING A SENSATION If you thought shagging, the regional swing dance originated some 70 years ago in the coastal Carolinas, was in danger of becoming a relic of the time in which it was born, you’ll be encouraged to know the beach music dance staple still has ardent champions — even some young ones — nurturing it in the 21st century. One of them is 13-year-old Zane Morgan. “He is an amazing young man,” said his grandfather, Bunkey Morgan, a local businessman and former Chatham County commissioner. While a grandfather’s opinion may be a bit biased, he’s also not wrong.

Copeland Springs Farm and Kitchen is one of the businesses at The Plant, east of downtown Pittsboro.

Though still in his early teens, Zane has, for several years, been an accomplished shagger, competing in dance events throughout the Southeastern United States — including showing off his shagging moves on a stage in Florida’s Disney World — and as far away as Paris, France. He’s also competed in his home state (he’s a Chatham County native), South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and California. “He’s won and placed in many dance contests,” Morgan said. Along the way, Zane has claimed a number of prizes and trophies for his skilled footwork, distinguishing himself on the shagging circuit. CHRISTMAS TREES ARE ONE COUPLE’S ‘FULL-TIME HOBBY’ A quarter of a century ago, Byron and Diana May — still a few years away from parenthood and looking to make a move from their home in Durham to a place in the country — zeroed in on an attractive property off Martha’s Chapel Road, just east of Jordan Lake.

“There was an old 1860 farmhouse,” Byron said. “It was a nice piece of property.” And — though they weren’t in the market for one — the Chatham County property included a working tree farm. “The previous owners had started it,” Byron said, “and it had been going for a few years.” Though it was really only land on which to build a home they sought, the farm held appeal. “We said, ‘You know, maybe it would be easier to buy an old house and fix it up,’” said Byron. “And it’s got the tree farm. Something new. We didn’t know anything about tree growing.” They bought the 24-acre property. Fast forward 25 years and the Mays — now parents of a 19-year-old daughter, Khoury — know a lot about farming and trees and growing them. With help from previous owners Mike and Jane Harrell during the May’s inaugural farming season in 1994, Byron and Diana kept Jordan Lake Tree Farm running their first year and have since. And Khoury, away now for college, grew up on the farm. “It’s really become a family affair for us,” Byron said. Read the full story by Randall Rigsbee, published online on December 13, 2019.

hen the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education were revealed in March, many of them were no surprise. The NAMM Foundation releases its list every spring, honoring school districts across the nation for their commitment to music education and, as they describe it, their “efforts to assure access to music for all students as part of a well-rounded education.” It’s not some cursory glance. The philanthropic foundation organized by the National Association of Music Merchants takes a deep dive into each community. This year’s application ran a whopping 57 pages, with questions on just about every topic you could possibly imagine. Professional development for teachers. Learning standards in the music curriculum. Opportunities for students to participate in concerts and events. Even broader items like community support and funding trends. Many of the questions were repeated for elementary, middle and high schools, just to get a picture of how music education operates across all grade levels. Many of the 754 honorees were the kind of large, metropolitan school districts you might expect. But in North Carolina, there were just two: Guilford County Schools, a behemoth district that includes the Greensboro metro area, and, for the second year in a row, Chatham County Schools. It was no fluke. Dr. Nathan Street, who serves as Director of Fine Arts for Guilford County Schools, is familiar with what’s happening in Chatham County. He taught for years at Chatham Central High School in Bear Creek and, because of those local ties and his success navigating the NAMM application process, has worked with Chatham County Schools Lead Arts Teacher Sharon Allen on Chatham’s NAMM application. Asked what impresses him most about music education in Chatham, Street doesn’t hesitate. He talks about how students at every school in the county have good access to the arts, something that has improved significantly from when he taught here. Then he pivots to the wider range of performance and extracurricular opportunities that have emerged over recent years. But he saves most of his praise for the instructors — mentioning excellence across the entire district before saving some of his most lavish comments for Allen and giving Chatham his overall grade: “It’s better now than it’s ever been.”

It All Starts With Teaching Everyone seems to agree that the main reason music education has soared in Chatham is the teachers. Just a couple of months after the NAMM awards were announced, JordanMatthews High School Chorus Director Matt Fry was presented the 2019-20 Jackson Parkhurst Award for Special Achievement from the North Carolina Symphony, one of three honors presented each year to outstanding music teachers in the state who inspire students and make a lasting difference in their lives. chathamlife 2020-21 11

Professional musician Diali Cissokho teaches students at Pittsboro Elementary as part of the Artists-in-Schools series.

Well into his third decade of teaching, Fry is an accomplished musician himself, having performed nine years with the Duke Chapel Choir and several seasons with the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham. As a well-respected director, he leads a number of vocal ensembles at the high school in Siler City, as well as a church choir and choral groups for senior adults in Fearrington Village. When his award citation was published on the North Carolina Symphony website, it was displayed under a large photo showing trophies presented to the three previous award recipients. One of those was inscribed with the name of David Clark, recipient of the 2017 North Carolina Symphony Musicians Award, given to emerging music educators with less than 10 years of experience. Clark teaches general music and band to kindergarten through eighth graders at Bonlee School. Different school, same community. Then there are a number of music teachers, like David Smith at Perry Harrison Elementary, whose creativity earned recognition as their schools’ Teachers of the Year. Smith, a general music teacher who Allen says “has a real gift for teaching elementary choral kids,” is a local success story. The Chatham native and graduate of Northwood High School in Pittsboro landed a television segment in late May as WRAL’s Teacher of the Week for his optimism and creativity in teaching music remotely during the pandemic, though that creativity has been on full display for years. “He would always have his kids sing

at the Durham Bulls baseball games,” Allen says, giving just one example of what makes Smith so special. “It’s the little extra things. We know we’re good, that Chatham County is good, but we need to get that out there and let everyone else know.”

It Takes a Community Teaching is a key reason music education is reaching a crescendo (and, actually, that applies to school arts more broadly, with theater, dance and visual arts thriving locally as well). Still, the kind of success Chatham has managed to achieve requires more than outstanding classroom teachers. It takes an entire community working together. Gina Harrison has been a catalyst behind the scenes for Chatham’s NAMM Best Communities for Music Education awards, but the accomplished musician and graphic designer has been more visible recently as president and co-founder of the Northwood High School Arts Education Foundation, one of several groups that help raise money and produce events to elevate student artists. Harrison says local students now have more opportunities than ever before to perform outside their own schools and even in some notable venues. All-County Chorus, which draws top vocalists from schools across Chatham for a daylong clinic and public performance, recently expanded beyond high school to include middle and elementary school performers. Northwood’s Concert Band performed alongside the UNC Symphonic Band in Chapel Hill’s Memorial Hall. And the school’s chamber singers performed as part of a larger student ensemble in New York’s Carnegie Hall. “For our kids, that has been truly transformative,” Harrison says. “It gets you out of your comfort zone to meet peers from a completely different place and do some self assessment. How do we measure up? Are we prepared? How do we fit with what kids are learning in other places? “That’s very important.” On the western side of Chatham, JMArts is producing events like Sing and Play, a student competition open to musicians across Chatham and beyond, and the New York Arts Adventure. The annual trip over spring break gives eight upperclass artists an opportunity to attend performances at places like the Metropolitan Opera, Jazz at Lincoln Center and on Broadway before learning from world-class artists during backstage tours and long discussions over lunch. Yet another thriving initiative is

Artists-in-Schools, created by the Chatham Arts Council five years ago to make the biggest impact they could across the entire community. Through a partnership with Chatham County Schools, the council brings professional teaching artists into elementary schools for hand-on workshops for teachers and students. “This past year was our first year in all 13 public elementaries in Chatham,” says Cheryl Chamblee, executive director of the nonprofit. “It’s exciting to drive out to Bennett and bring music from Senegal to children or go to North Chatham and Pittsboro and bring music from Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana. Our district is super supportive of arts education. We are really fortunate.”

Arts Are Important There are many good reasons to make arts education a real priority. Street points out that parents tend to come into schools for one of two reasons: Either they’re having a parent conference because of bad grades or some disciplinary problem, or they’re attending an athletic contest or arts

BUYING? SELLING? performance. Developing the arts draws the community for a positive reason and helps showcase the good news that takes place in schools every day. Dr. Dan Huff, Director of Music Education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, offers another reason. He talks about how music and the arts help students develop intelligence — in layman’s terms, their ability to learn, apply knowledge and deal with new situations. In the arts, he says, you begin with nothing but raw materials, some personal skills and your own perception. Everything else is how you apply your skills and employ your perception to fill the void. Still, not every community chooses to make the arts a priority. Huff says many communities support school arts programs on what he calls an “as-needed, occasional basis.” They may raise money to send one marching band to a particular out-of-state performance, for example, or send some unusually gifted vocalist to a workshop like the weeklong, residential intensive he directs each summer for high school musicians. Huff knows quite a lot about music education in Chatham, and not only because the university is only a few miles away and just over the county line. He has hands-on experience directing Chatham’s All-County Chorus more than once. He keeps a close eye on school districts across the state to help his own music education students navigate the job market after they graduate. Even some of his professional network has ties to the community. His assessment: You’d be hard pressed to find many small school districts in the state that have done as well as Chatham. “A lot of counties attempt this sort of thing, but nobody gets it done,” Huff says. “One of the things that’s unique about Chatham County is that it’s small enough to act with real power when it decides to act. You guys go out of your way to make sure it’s available across the entire county, to all populations, in every setting, and I think that speaks well of the community.” cl

At the Market Even under the blazing July sun, patient customers began queuing up a good half hour before the Fearrington Farmers’ Market even opened. One of the longer lines formed at the Kalawi Farms table, where small baskets of peaches were waiting at five dollars a pop. Dozens of customers there were strategic, winding their way under some large shade trees before swerving back into the heat. Peaches are always a favorite, they say, and the season runs far too short. But peaches aren’t the only attraction. Across a parking lot and along a circular pathway that accommodates most of the vendors, Don Novak is picking up some vegetables from Grand Hope Farm, a small family outfit in Silk Hope that operates solely on sales from this Tuesday afternoon market and a similar one on Saturday mornings in Pittsboro at historic Chatham Mills. Balancing several plastic bags in each hand, Don stops for a moment to show what he has purchased so far and talk about why he’s a regular at the weekly market that’s drawing so many customers now that cars have filled the lots and spilled onto East Camden Street. Don eats a lot of vegetables, he says, so it’s not unusual for him to spend 30 or 40 dollars each week for quality, local produce

picked just hours ago. He also likes knowing where his food comes from and getting to know the farmers who grow it. That’s music to the ears of vendors like Elizabeth Szilvay. She is helping Grand Hope Farm customers choose from peppers, squash, eggplant and a whopping nine varieties of tomatoes, while husband Brandon watches over the tent to keep everything stocked. “A lot of people in the community are very good about coming out every week,” says Elizabeth, who enjoys seeing all of the familiar faces and meeting new friends as well. “They’re all very loyal customers.” You think you know what to expect at the market, but there can still be a few surprises. Among this afternoon’s 30 vendors, give or take, is The Barking Bedlie, a small operation that makes all-natural pet treats — basically, meat jerky without the seasoning. At first, owner Melissa Hoppes wasn’t sure if pet treats even qualified for the market. “They told me, ‘Yep, if you make it, you can sell it,’” she recalls. Which is good news for many four-footed customers wandering the grounds today. They also can look forward to some locally produced goodness from the market. After all, Melissa says, “I haven’t had a dog yet that didn’t like them.” cl

The program has earned three stars since 2015 from The World of Fine Wine — the beverage industry’s equivalent of three Michelin stars — and its coveted Jury Prize for the Top 100 wine lists in the world since 2017.

Q

Where do we begin? How about something very basic, like do you really need to drink white, red or rose with different meals, or is that just something left over from days gone by?

I definitely did follow this simple rule of thumb when I first started getting into wine. But diving more into wine will make you realize how one-dimensional this rule is. I think that with so many talented producers these days, there are more options. Different grapes themselves have intrinsic qualities that can surprise many on how they easily transcend different types of food pairings. You also have to consider the dish itself as a whole, not just the main protein. What other components does it have? Does it have a robust sauce? What cooking method was used? This is not even considering the diners themselves and their own wine preferences!

Q

Price can be confusing. There are extremely cheap wines — some even come in boxes — and plenty of very expensive bottles. Do you have to spend a fortune to get a good quality wine?

Absolutely not! I cannot stress this enough. Yes, there are definitely wines that cost an arm and a leg due to how they are grown and made — you have to factor in vineyard and grape prices, labor, barrel treatment, required aging time, etc. But more often than not, it is the wine’s rarity and prestige. Always trust your own palate. It’s great to get insight from publications, friends and professionals. In the end, you’re drinking that bottle of wine, may it cost $500 or $15. Your own enjoyment is paramount.

Q

So, what does make a really good wine: Is it the grapes, the skill of the winemaker or something entirely different?

Ultimately, nature makes the best wines. You’ll hear wine professionals say that a winemaker’s skill is more put to the test when it’s a mediocre vintage. If it’s a great vintage, all they have to do is sit back and let the grapes do their thing. The best winemakers can produce quality wines from difficult vintages because they also work with land and vines that they have known for years. We opened a 1994 Romanée-SaintVivant from Domaine de la Romanée Conti — a storied Burgundy producer, arguably at the pinnacle — a couple of years back. Despite it being the worst vintage of the decade, it showed beautifully. So I’m definitely in the camp of “winemaker over vintage.”

Q

With all of the choices out there, how do I walk into a wine shop or a good grocery store and find something I like?

I’m a big advocate of being very honest to both yourself and the professional helping you out. Don’t hold back! We want to help! Wine shops have trained employees who are more than happy to get you what you want, but they’re also not mind readers. Most people are afraid of voicing a price point they’re comfortable with because they feel like they’re going to be judged by it. That’s totally understandable, which is why I would recommend giving a price range instead. Wine professionals get very excited showing off what available bottles they have. It also helps to communicate to them the wines you’ve enjoyed in the past. I love it when guests show me a photo of a wine that they liked, even if I’d never had that wine before.

Paula de Pano Selects All wines are available at The Belted Goat in Fearrington, which offers sourcing for wines not currently on the shelves. Moussé, L’Or d’Eugene, Perpétuelle Blanc de Noirs, Brut, Champagne, France NV (SRP $49). Definitely in my top-five of small growerproducer champagnes — so many flavors going on in this wine, from mirabelle plums, Meyer lemon and honeycomb to a crisp, saline finish. Vollenweider, Riesling, Kabinett, Wolfer Goldgrube, Mosel, Germany 2019 (SRP $28). I can never say no to a low ABV, ‘porch pounder’ like this Riesling. Its crystalline acidity is balanced by a touch of residual sugar, showing off quince, candied ginger and citrus blossoms. Weszeli, Grüner Veltliner, Langenlois, Kamptal, Austria 2018 (SRP $23). Dry, light, super lively with green apple, pear, fresh herb and white pepper. I usually recommend this for guests looking for an uncomplicatedly delicious and refreshing white wine. Girolamo Russo, Nerina, Etna Bianco, Sicily, Italy 2017 (SRP $36). Primarily made from Carricante grapes grown on volcanic soils, this wine has loads of dried yellow fruit, butterscotch and citrus peel. Don’t hesitate to cellar for a few more years as it ages like a fine white Burgundy. Tiberio, Rosé, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, Italy 2019 (SRP$21). Perhaps our sleeper rosé of the year, this bottle punches above its weight class. Deeply-colored with wild cherry and raspberry flavors, it finishes fruity yet dry. Mac Forbes, Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia 2019 (SRP $33). Light, bright and spicy, this is a summer sipper with loads of personality, just like its young winemaker. Think earthy cherries, cracked black pepper and oolong tea. Try it chilled! Piedrasassi, P.S., Syrah, Santa Barbara, California, USA 2018 (SRP $25). This wine is a bit harder to find than their other Syrahs, but absolutely worth the hunt. A savory wine with purple flowers, licorice, juniper and smoke, enveloped by crunchy dark berry fruit. Hacienda Monasterio, Crianza, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2015 (SRP $55). Fans of bolder reds need to take note of this wine. Legendary winemaker Peter Sisseck makes this complex Tempranillo-dominant. This silky wine showcases ripe plum, black currants, sour cherry, olive tapenade and baking spices.

There’s a lot of information on a wine label — the region, country, vintage — all of these things can direct me to a bottle that would be similar to what they previously enjoyed.

Q

You’re an expert on wine, but most of us are not. In fact, many of us have little knowledge at all. When people learn more about wine, do they enjoy the experience more?

The more you taste, the more you know! But this can sometimes be a Catch-22 situation as many sommeliers gearing up to take their formal examinations can tell you. Wine is never just a beverage during this period in our profession. We constantly try to break the wine down and recall all of the information we know about it to assess

how it reflects its varietal origins to sharpen our skills. Does this taste like a Chardonnay from California or from Burgundy, or is it atypical? So yes, sometimes more knowledge can remove some of the fun in wine. Having more knowledge about what you like to drink is more important as a consumer because it will help you communicate what you want to a professional. It’s our job to translate what you’re telling us.

Q

Speaking of developing knowledge, you are well known for the wine classes you lead at Fearrington. What is the experience like for someone taking a class?

While our classes draw beginners and aficionados alike, many keep on returning because

Interactive cocktail classes and spirits tastings were introduced this year, and the reception for that was very positive. We’re lucky here at Fearrington since we have excellent access to wines and liquors that other places in the state don’t, so that’s definitely a plus to introduce these beverages to our attendees. I will say it again, because it really is worth repeating: Trust your palate! There are only two types of wines: wines you like to drink and wines you don’t like to drink. You’re the one drinking the wine. cl

A Slice of Life in Chatham Pastor Greg and Vicky Burriss greet the congregation before drive-in church.

Drive-In Church If you just ignore the setting, this morning’s Sunday worship service at Rocky River Baptist Church seems fairly typical. The Rev. Dr. Greg Burriss, who simply goes by Pastor Greg, wanders through the congregation greeting friends and welcoming visitors, catching up on some local news and asking what he can do for the families. There are hymns and two sermons, one for the children and another for everyone. Even The Lord’s Supper, something this church celebrates every three months. And after the service, everyone honks their horns in approval. Don’t bother reading that line again. Yes, they honk their horns in approval. Because this setting is not typical. Instead of meeting inside a crowded, red brick sanctuary during the pandemic, everyone is parked in cars and pickup trucks along a horseshoe-shaped lot that wraps around the main building. And to hear the service, even if they can’t see where everything is taking place, they all have their radios tuned to 87.9 FM. It’s not something anyone ever dreamed could happen. But when the coronavirus started rolling through the state, deacons decided quickly to shut down in-person services to keep everyone safe — not just members of their own congregation, but everyone in

the community, as well. It was something they saw as an expression of their faith: Love your neighbor as yourself. And then after a while, when it was clear that a return to normal wasn’t on the immediate horizon, Pastor Greg started thinking about how to hold services that could provide some comforting familiarity while minimizing the risk. That solution: drive-in church. From its genesis, the service was designed to be simple, so it wouldn’t become a burden over time, however long that might be. Pastor Greg and his wife, Vicky, who serves as pianist, lead worship under a covered entrance to the fellowship building. Roger Hinshaw, who helped devise the plan, mixes sound and broadcasts from a remote corner inside, using an inexpensive radio transmitter they quickly ordered from Amazon and had delivered in days. Drive-in church even has a few benefits that nobody anticipated. “We have some people coming who didn’t come before, either because they’re shy or aren’t comfortable dressing up. And some of the older people have said they can hear the service better in their cars than they can when we’re inside,” Pastor Greg explains. “Still, all in all, being inside would be better.” cl

VOLUMES OF CHANGE As the pandemic settled in for what could be an extended run, one vibrant cultural institution thriving on personal contact and community gatherings scrambled to transform itself. And remain a vital part of life.

You probably remember that funny old cliché, the one about up-tight librarians walking through the stacks, shushing everyone, just to keep things perfectly quiet in the library. Yeah, that one’s not so funny anymore. Chatham Community Library has always been a vibrant place. On an average day, there’s a steady stream of people coming and going. College students darting in from surrounding classroom buildings to do some last-minute research before their next class. Children dancing and singing during storytime, while a book club debates ideas in the nearby meeting room. Patrons getting advice from librarians before choosing their next stack of novels to check out and start reading when they get back home. Now, everything is eerily silent and the only people allowed inside the building at all are staff members who come in every day because, as Library Director Linda Clarke puts it, “There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff to do.” Everything

stopped abruptly sometime around March 17, Clarke recalls, when the new coronavirus started spreading locally. At first it seemed like a temporary setback — a “pause” in the new pandemic lexicon. Before long, library staff realized they could be in this for the long haul and decided to rethink how the library could still fulfill its mission — to serve the community — when they suddenly couldn’t do what they had always done. And they had to do it fast.

A Virtual Transformation The first move was to start promoting e-books that people could check-out and read online. But to make those available to a growing number of people trapped at home and looking for something to do, librarians had to change the way library cards were issued, since the usual method required local residents to come in and show ID to confirm they lived in the service area. Within a few months, more than 600 people had signed up for the first time and they had different interests, so Clarke and her staff started beefing up their holdings of e-books and e-audiobooks. Pittsboro Branch Manager Rita Van Duinen says the pandemic came late in the fiscal year when there wasn’t much money left to spend, but Friends of the Library came through with the funding needed to build the electronic collection. So, what do you do with popular events

like storytime? Well, that went online as well — again, a logical transition, but one that you can’t do overnight. Youth Services Librarian Katy Henderson, who simply goes by “Miss Katy” among the preschool audience, says she scrambled a bit to figure out which video platform to use and even what books she could read, based on something called “read-aloud permissions” that publishers must grant for their books to be read online. After quickly surveying parents, Miss Katy resumed storytime, first with a prerecorded version on Facebook and YouTube and then live gatherings on Go To Meeting two mornings a week. Apparently, it has been a success. One day, after taking storytime live, Miss Katy received an unsolicited note: Miss Katy. Thank you for doing such a wonderful story time. Logan is a bit shy and doesn’t participate much, but he sings the songs all day long and talks about story time all week. He loves climbing in front of the computer and asking, “Where is Miss Katy?!” We appreciate you so much! The Shambleys (Tony, Jenna, Cole, Logan and Baby Garrett)

Jenna Shambley, who sent the note, says storytime has been especially important for her family. Logan is two and half, and not in daycare or preschool, so storytime provides

some vital social interaction. And she’s a nurse working with COVID-19 patients in Chapel Hill, so the entire family stays pretty close to home. “There aren’t as many kids attending online, but that means Logan gets to know them,” Shambley said during a short discussion by phone. “He looks forward to it and he talks about it. And when it’s time, he gets excited.” That still leaves all of those books, sitting untouched on shelves inside the quiet library. It took a little longer to figure out how to resume circulation safely, but by late June, they had conquered that as well. The solution was “curbside pick-up,” where people use the online catalog to select books and DVDs before calling their local library to place the order and schedule a pickup time. As part of that “behind-thescenes stuff to do,” library staff check out the materials, bag them and drop them in the trunk when the car pulls up in front of the library. To be fair, the entire process is a bit more complicated than that; it involves quarantining books when they’re returned and other safety measures. But for patrons, it’s all pretty easy and it’s been a hit.

‘It’s About Helping People’ From all accounts, the transition has been fairly smooth and most of the essential services have continued, albeit in a slightly different form. Of course, there are a few things that have fallen by the wayside. One of them is an outreach program where librarians take programming into local nursing homes. Those facilities have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic and forced to place extremely tight restrictions on who can even walk through the door. “It’s frustrating,” Clarke admits. “For librarians, it’s not just books we’re interested in. That’s our commodity, I guess, but it’s about helping people. It’s difficult for all of us to not be able to do that in the normal way.” There’s still a lot happening inside the quiet library and one of the most important may be work on a plan to reopen the buildings — whenever the pandemic metrics make that possible. Once that does happen, there’s one thing you probably won’t hear in those first few days of celebration, and that’s a librarian going “Shhhhh.” cl

Lynn Glasser, left, and Patricia Dowdy prepare prescriptions at Chatham Cares.

Rx for Caring Lynn Glasser doesn’t need to work. In fact, he actually retired five years ago as owner of Siler City Pharmacy after a 37-year career that included practice in several places — mostly in Chatham, but also in Orange and Lee. Still, you can find the Siler City native hard at work two days each week in a back room just yards from the pharmacy he once owned. Only now, he’s volunteering with Chatham Cares, a nonprofit providing free prescription medication for patients who are indigent or unemployed. In an average year, Chatham Cares sees 450 to 500 different patients and fills 11,000 prescriptions. That adds up to roughly $2.5 million that Glasser and his colleagues are saving patients who otherwise would need to visit UNC Hospitals for help. But since many don’t have a car or cannot drive, some would go without the medication they need. Glasser isn’t the only one committed to serving their neighbors. Today, he’s preparing prescriptions with Patricia Dowdy while Julissa Herrera works in the front of the store, a large room filled with wheelchairs, crutches, medical supplies and over-the-counter medicine that patients also can take home free of charge. Then there are four other volunteer pharmacists who rotate shifts

and work two days each week. Keeping it all running has been a real struggle. Glasser says he and his staff are constantly applying for grants and trying to come up with new ways to attract corporate and individual donors. But it’s well worth the effort when he reads the “many, many notes” from patients who thank them for being there — and even donate three or four dollars, because they want to help, too, and that’s all they have. One of them is Anna Salazar, whose parents are in their late 60s, sick and have no income. For her family, Chatham Cares is a real blessing. “They’re always helpful,” she says. “Even going through the pandemic, this really hard time, there hasn’t been a day my parents have gone without medication. We’re thankful for them. If it weren’t for Chatham Cares, they probably wouldn’t even be here.” After a long and successful career, Glasser could have chosen full-time retirement, but says that could never be as rewarding. “Folks in Chatham County, we’re a good community, we’re a very diverse community and we’re glad to help people in our county,” he says. “That’s what I’ve done for 42 years. I’ve tried to help people with health concerns and make them better physically. That’s what we all do here: We help people.” cl
