SUMMER!
Before we say goodbye for the summer, we want to send you off with these predictions!

Debate: Pros and Cons of Sleepaway Camp

Are sleepaway camps worth it??!!?

As you all know summer is right around the corner and the same with summer camp. There are many different styles of summer camps and one of those is sleepaway camp. But what are the pros and cons of summer camp, specifically sleepaway camp?

Some pros of sleepaway summer camp would be that it is a very fun experience for your child and they can make a lot of new friends and really have a great time. It also gives your child a chance to try some new things depending on what summer camp they attend Another big pro is that there is a summer camp for everything. There are camps that mimic farm life, traditional, cowboy, and so many more possibilities. All you have to do is a bit of research and you will find the perfect fit for your child Lastly, it allows your child to do what they want and make choices for themselves. They can also socialize and have fun in a safe environment.

Now what are the cons of summer camp? First of all, it's expensive. If it's your first time you will need to get a lot of stuff like sleeping bags, backpacks, and other items specific to the camp Also, it can be hard for children to be away from parents for that long. All camps have people on staff to help campers and parents while at sleepaway camp. Note that most sleepaway camps do not allow phones or any technology.

continued from previous page

Now, how to make the right decision for you and your child? Online research always provides a good description of the camps. I would recommend if it's your first time at sleepaway camp that you go to a camp that you already know about and you know people who go there. You can also do online interviews and there are videos on youtube about the camp you are looking for. Start out small with only a few weeks. Then if your child really likes it, you can start going for longer periods of time

Summer is a time to have fun, try new things, and enjoy all that nature and the outdoors have to offer. Sleepaway camp is a great place to do just that.

My Top 15 Broadway Shows!

There are many good shows on Broadway right now, but here are my recommendations for what to see this summer

To me, there's no better way to spend a rainy day or celebrate a special occasion than to spend the day in New York City You could go to Central Park, spend the day shopping in Times Square, or visit one of NYC’s many museums. But personally, my favorite way to spend a day in NYC is seeing a Broadway show. Many people who live around here take for granted how close we live to the city Many people around the world will never have the opportunity to see professional live theater. So with that being said, here are my top 15 shows that you should see this summer. (This is based on my opinion, popular opinion, reviews, and statistics. Also, all of the shows (with the exception of a few) are kid appropriate )

15. SIX: The Musical

SIX is one of the most popular musicals on Broadway right now. It tells the story of King Henry VIII’s six wives and what happened to each one It is told through pop music and is presented like a pop concert. The show premiered in England and opened on Broadway in October, 2021. The show has won 23 awards including the Tony Award for Best Original Score I enjoy some of the songs, but I don’t love

all of them. But, I am not a fan of pop in general so that is why it is at Number 15. If you are a big fan of pop, it is definitely a show you should see

14 The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is a religious satire musical written by the duo that wrote South Park. The show is about two Mormon missionaries who travel to Uganda and try to spread their culture but the people in Uganda don’t express interest In 2011, they received 9 Tonys including Best New Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. The show has a very good score and is still very popular as a show to see on Broadway. I would have put the show higher on the list but it contains parts that some people view as inappropriate for kids and I wanted to make most of these shows child appropriate. It is a very good show and it is one of my favorites.

13. Hadestown

Hadestown is a show that started in Vermont in 2006, but the show's creator, Anaïs Mitchell, wasn’t sure what the future of the show was, so she decided that the show would be turned into a concept album which was released in 2010. Nine years later the show premiered on Broadway. The show is a retelling of the ancient Greek myth

continued from previous page

Orpheus and Eurydice It received 14 Tony Nominations at the 73rd Tony Awards and won 8 including Best New Musical and Best Original Score. It also won the Grammy for the Best Musical Theater Album. The show is a good one for fans of Greek Mythology and other myths. It is personally not one of my favorites but the stats make it hard not to put it on the list

12. Wicked

This will probably be the most unpopular opinion on this list because Wicked has been a Broadway favorite for a long time now and personally, I don't really enjoy it I can’t quite figure out why I don’t like it but it didn’t stand out to me very much and I was kind of bored while watching it. Anyway, the show is written by musical legend Stephen Schwartz who is behind some of the most popular shows in Broadway history The show is based on a book called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. The show is a spinoff of the Wizard of Oz and is told from the perspective of the Wicked Witch. In 2016, the show surpassed $1 billion in revenue and is one of only three shows to do so This is a very popular show on Broadway and is worth seeing.

11. Funny Girl

The Funny Girl that is currently on Broadway is a revival of the original from 1964 The show is about the life of comedian and Broadway star

Fanny Brice. The original show received 8 Tony Nominations and the original cast has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame The show’s music is written by Jule Styne, with the lyrics written by Bob Merril and the book written by Isobel Lennart. The current revival opened in April of 2022 and is closing in September. The show is great for comedy fans and is one of the most popular shows on Broadway right now I personally am not very familiar with the show and it was recommended by Head of School, Mr. Buffum. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a laugh.

10 The Lion King

The Lion King is a show perfect for kids It is the stage adaptation of the 1994 film by the same name and the music is written by Elton John and Tim Rice. The show is famous for their creatively designed costumes and puppets which are controlled by the actors in a way that makes you feel as though you are watching real animals I saw this show expecting it to be exactly the same as the film but they changed enough that it feels completely different. I can see why the show has been on Broadway for so long. The show is one of the three shows to ever gross more than $1 billion It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and received 11 more Nominations and 5 other wins including Best Costume Design. The show is a must see for all ages and is a perfect show to see with young kids who have never seen a Broadway show before

9 Aladdin

Aladdin is one of the best shows for kids and Disney fans alike. While the show is based on the 1992 film it has many differences. For one thing, they brought in Aladdin’s three best friends instead of Abu. Another thing is that they added songs to the score This is because the movie released in 1992 only featured 5 songs So, to fix this, they went into the Disney archives and found some songs that were originally cut from the movie. The show's costumes are creatively designed with lots of sparkle. The show received 5 Tony nominations and James Monroe Iglehart won a Tony for Best Actor in a Featured Role The show is great for fans of comedy and fans of Disney. It is a great show for kids and is a good show to see this summer.

8 Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play that is set 19 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and follows Harry’s son who is going to Hogwarts and befriends Draco Malfoy’s son. The show premiered in London in 2016 and then opened on Broadway in April, 2018 The show was written by J K Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. The Broadway run received 10 Tony nominations and won 6 including Best Play. It also won the Grammy for the Best Musical Theater Album. The show used to be two parts but recently the show was turned into one long show spanning 3 5 hours If you are a die hard fan of the books and movies (like me)

you will love this show. The special effects are also incredible and the set design is creative and unique If you are looking for a good play it is a must see, but it is long for some people Overall, if you are looking for a good show to see without music, you should definitely go to see it.

7. A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical

A Beautiful Noise tells the story of singer/songwriter Neil Diamond It is a jukebox musical, which means that it is made up of songs that already exist and this particular show is made up of Neil Diamond songs. It is named after Neil Diamond's 1976 album of the same name It opened on Broadway in 2022 It is a great family musical and is great for people who are fans of Neil Diamond. I put it here because I really like Neil Diamond's music. While the show hasn't won any Tonys, it is very popular right now. If you are looking for a good show to see over the summer this is definitely something you could see Now, the show's reviews are mixed but it is still a show that is good for people who enjoy jukebox musicals.

6. MJ

MJ is the story of pop star Micheal Jackson

This show is also a jukebox musical and uses the music of Micheal Jackson to tell the story. The show was supposed to premiere in mid-2020 but was not able to because of Covid-19. The show then ended up opening in February 2022. The show received 10 Tony nominations and won 4, including Myles Frost earning the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical. The show was also

nominated for the Grammy for the Best Musical Theater Album The show has gotten mixed reviews but has been a success at the box office. It is set to open in London in 2024. If you are a big Micheal Jackson fan or a big fan of jukebox musicals, it is a great show to see. I like Micheal Jackson so it is one of my favorites, but even if you don’t love Micheal Jackson, it is still a very fun show to see.

favorite shows and I think it is one of the best shows to see this summer whether you are a horror fan or not

4.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

5.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Sweeney Todd is a story about a barber who is a serial killer The music was written by Stephen Sondheim who is famous for Into the Woods, Company, and Sunday in the Park with George and the book was written by Hugh Wheeler. It was based on a penny dreadful which was a Victorian style of stories that came out in weekly issues of 8-16 pages printed in bulk and cost a penny. The show is currently on Broadway and is the 3rd revival of the show which came out originally in 1979. The show currently on Broadway is directed by Thomas Kail who is famous for directing Hamilton and In the Heights The show currently stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford. The original show received 9 Tony Nominations and won 8 of them, including Best Original Score and Best Musical. The current revival received 8 nominations including Best Revival of a Musical The show is on the dark side so it may not be appropriate for young kids but it is one of my

Moulin Rouge is a stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film by the same name. The show is a jukebox musical like A Beautiful Noise and MJ and was released in 2019 The show is about the romance between cabaret actress Satine and composer Christain. The show features actor Aaron Tveit who is a very successful Tony and Grammy winning actor and singer. At the 74th Tony Awards, the show received 14 nominations and won 10, the most of the night, including Best Musical It is currently the 6th most popular show on Broadway according to Broadway.com. Some famous songs that are in the show are Bad Romance, Toxic, Seven Nation Army, Firework, and Never Gonna Give You Up The show contains some parts that may be inappropriate for young kids and Broadway.com recommends it for ages 12 and up but it is such a good show it would be hard to put lower on the list. But overall, the show is great and really interesting and energetic. It is one of my must see shows for this summer

3. Back to the Future: The Musical Back to the Future is bound to be a great show for kids and adults alike. The show will be a musical adaptation of the 1985 movie of the same name The music will be written by Alan Silvestri who wrote the score for the original movie and the book will be written by the same

person who wrote the script for the film The show was set to premier in London in 2015 which is the year the characters travel to in the sequel, Back to the Future Part II, but due to one of the directors disagreeing with the other director on some of the creative elements production was pushed back The show premiered at the Manchester Opera House in 2020 before being transferred to West End in 2021. The show is set to have previews in NYC on June 30th. The show did well in London, receiving an Oliver for Best New Musical. The process to adapt Back to the Future into a Broadway show started in 2012 after Bob Gale had mentioned it at the DeLorean convention in 2004. It will open on August 3rd, 2023 in the Winter Garden Theater with an all star cast. If you are a big fan of the films, then this is a must see this summer Even if you aren't super familiar with the films, you are sure to enjoy the musical and I will definitely be seeing it. I think that you should definitely get tickets and make sure to see this show with your whole entire family.

2 Hamilton

Hamilton is probably my favorite show on this list. The music, the acting, the staging, I love everything about it. For those of you who don’t know, Hamilton is about the life of American founding father, Alexander Hamilton, and his influence on the US government The show is based on the novel called Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. While it sounds somewhat

boring, trust me, it’s not. The show is told through many kinds of music like rap, R&B, pop, hip hop and soul and consists of many songs making for a very energetic show The entire show is written by Lin Manual Miranda who was already famous for creating In the Heights. The show was written over the span of eight years and premiered off-Broadway in 2015 at the Public Theater The show then transferred to its current home, the Richard Rodgers Theater, in August 2015. What's unique about Hamilton is that they only cast people of color in the roles of the founding fathers which is a way to show that, as Lin said, they are telling the story of America then, as told by now The show sweeped the 2016 Tonys with a record-breaking 16 nominations and a total 11 wins including Best Musical. Hamilton is a true musical theater masterpiece and the only reason it is not my number one show is because it is not a new musical The 6th Graders took a field trip this year to see the show and everyone loved it, including myself. If you are looking for a good show to see this summer, Hamilton is one of my must sees and is one of the greatest shows of all time.

1.Shucked

Shucked is one of the most popular shows currently on Broadway, and it’s easy to see why. The show premiered on Broadway in April 2023 and has been a smash hit. People say the show is “what you get when you combine two comedy writers from New York and two music superstars from Nashville.” The show is about a

young girl who has to postpone her wedding to save the corn, but I won't spoil much The music was written by Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark, two successful country singers and frequent collaborators. The book is written by Robert Horn, who is best known for Hercules on Broadway and the musical adaptation of Tootsie The show premiered in Salt Lake City and then transferred this year. The show is doing well with 9 nominations at the 76th Tonys (which you should make sure to check out this Sunday, April 11th, at 8:00 PM. It will be hosted by Ariana DeBose and you won’t want to miss it ) The show received nominations for Best Musical and Best Original Score. Alex Newell who plays Lulu is one of the first openly nonbinary people to be nominated for a Tony, with the nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical Jack O’Brien, who has won 3 Tonys and is famous for Hairspray The show uses corn-related puns to advertise and it has been working really well so far. If you are a fan of comedy or country music, this is a great show to see. Even if you aren’t a big fan of those things, you are certain to enjoy Shucked This is my number one must see show this summer, no matter what.

So those are my top 15 shows to see on Broadway. Make sure to check out as many as you can Also, there are many shows that would’ve been on this list had they not ended their run on Broadway like Beetlejuice, Phantom

of the Opera, and Into the Woods. Even if you're not a fan of live theater, I hope you find something you enjoy on the list It has been a lot of fun writing about theater this trimester and I hope you learned a little more about my favorite place in the world, Broadway!

Looking For a Snack? Here's What We Recommend

Summer is right around the corner and we all enjoy a nice snack during the hot and sunny days. I went around the entire Chatham Day School and asked grades 2-8 what their favorite summer snack is between ice cream, popsicles, chips, cookies, fruit, and lemonade. Here are the results:

From these results, we can see that ice cream is the most popular snack amongst 2nd-8 th graders at CDS, followed by lemonade, popsicles, fruit, cookies, and chips Whatever you pick this summer to snack on, enjoy it and have fun!

TAYT’S TOP 25 MLB CURRENT PLAYERS (#3-1)

THE 2023 MLB SEASON HAS BEGUN AND HERE ARE SOME EARLY THOUGHTS

3. Mike Trout/ espn rank 2 Mike Trout is a center fielder for the Los Angeles Angels or Anaheim Angels Mike Trout has always been considered one of the best both currently and all time. Mike is an insane two sided player as he is insane on the defensive side of things having robbed many people including some of the greats and offensively he hits dingers with 350 home runs in his career While many people say he's underrated and some say he's overrated both could be true at times. Last season Trout had an off year and all season we could see something was off with him. It is easy to say that this was a result of past injuries that have involved his arm and hamstring Getting to play alongside pitcher and hitter Shohei Ohtani also is something that elevates Trout’s play and coverage. While I don’t like to say it because baseball is about teams, it is true that Shohei and Mike really do carry this Angels team

continued from previous year

Aaron Judge is an all outfielder for the New York Yankees. After last season there is so much to say about this guy. Last season he had a record breaking season in home runs after he broke Roger Maris’ record for hitting 62 homers. And those 61st and 62nd home run balls together went for three million dollars combined Judge hit 51 home runs in his rookie year, setting a new MLB record for rookies. Sadly, the next year Pete Alonso, a New York Met, broke that record as a rookie with 53 home runs. When Judge beat Maris’ home run record, he unseated a fellow Yankee, although a retired one Some people didn't even know Roger Maris before his record was broken unless you were alive when he played. Unlike Maris, Judge is hard to miss at 6 ft 7 and 285 pounds. He is currently at 250 homers and counting!

#1.Shohei Ohtani/ espn rank 1

Shohei Ohtani is an outfielder, designated hitter, and pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Angels. The often asked question about Shohei Ohtani is: Does he actually pitch and hit? The answer is yes and he won the 2021 MVP and came in second for voting last year after losing to Aaron Judge He is already in 1st place for MVP voting this year and is an absolute stud. His career ERA is solid and he has never had a year where his ERA was over 3.00 and he has not had a year where he has had less

than 30 home runs which just shows how good he really is all around. Shohei gets to play beside Mike Trout, and when both of them are doing well, the Angels are a scary team to face Shohei isn't just good at baseball, he's nice, funny, and a good role model. All of these things combined make him the best player on my list.

Premier Lacrosse League

The latest up and coming league: Meet the PLL

The PLL stands for Premier Lacrosse League

The league is owned by former player Paul Rabil. He was the first overall pick in the 2008 Major Lacrosse League (MLL). Paul went to Johns Hopkins University and was picked by the Boston Cannon and by the San Jose Stealth in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) The NLL is a box lacrosse league. Box lacrosse is an indoor variation of lacrosse. He played on the San Jose Stealth from 2008 - 2013 and joined the Boston Cannon from 2013 - 2018. In 2018 he founded the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) with his brother Mike Rabil

The PLL started June 1, 2019 with 8 teams in the league. The MLL joined the PLL and the resulting teams were: Archers, Atlas, Cannons, Chaos, Chrome, Redwoods, Waterdogs, and Whipsnakes Paul Rabil was on Atlas In 2021 he was traded to the Boston Cannon.Paul Rabil retired after that season.

Rabil attributed his retirement as a player to his desire to focus on the business side of the PLL and to continue building the league as well as his numerous other business ventures. The PLL has recently been listed on NASDAQ for $55.33.

The PLL is entering their 5th season. The season started June 3 with games in Albany, NY. The PLL plays games all around the U.S. The playoffs will start September 4 in Boston The Whipsnakes are favored to win the PLL championship

The PLL announced that each team will have a home city starting next season. The team will still be playing around the country but will be playing in their home cities a couple of times You should try and check out a game this summer!

BEST CAMPING EXPERIENCES AND RECOMMENDATIONS

THESE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE FROM AN EXPERIENCED CAMPER

Camping is on a lot of people's minds at this time of year so here are my recommendations for the best camping spots in the country.

#5: Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach is a great place for camping and boating. It's also great for fishing and enjoying time on the beach. If you go, try and go boating even if you are afraid of deep water, it is incredibly fun

#4: Wyoming. When I went to Wyoming it was great. We went to Yellowstone and saw hot springs and went to Yellowstone Lake. It was warm in the afternoon and cold in the morning and at night It is a great place to camp in the summer even though I had to sleep in sweatpants to stay warm.

#3 Tennessee. I went swimming and boating in Tennessee. The waters were very warm and I think the best was the rivers The best one to visit is Pigeon River I do recommend it as a camping spot. If you like the outdoors, this place is for you.

#2 Arizona. I stayed in two really cool places in Arizona. I stayed at a desert location where I got a good view of the town below. It was very hot but dealing with the heat was worth it The next was the Grand Canyon If you stay at one of the campsites at the rim, every morning deer raid the camping spots, but it is still a good experience.

#1 North Carolina The beaches in North Carolina are the best Camping here in the summer is unbeatable. Whether it is at an RV campground, in the woods, or by the beach, I highly recommend North Carolina be added to your summer camping list.

For 3rd-5th graders, I would recommend the I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis which is about historic events told from the eyes of a tween. They are very interesting and good. I also think that the Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne is also very interesting These are about a treehouse becoming a time machine and the two owners of the treehouse traveling to different historical time periods. Both of these series should appeal to 3rd -5th graders.

For 6th-8th graders, I would recommend the following books

All of the books that Mrs Greenspan assigns to the upper schoolers are fantastic books. I just read the book A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson and it was really good. So if you are interested in books, Mrs Greenspan has great suggestions, but here are a few of my own Maze Runner by James Dashner is a great series and the same is true with Gary Paulsen’s book Hatchet.

Keep in mind that most of these suggestions are my opinion so don’t blame me if you do not like some of the books I suggested. Just keep this article in mind if you ever want to read a good book.
