“Houston, this is Apollo 10. You can tell the world we have arrived.” - Major General Thomas P Stafford, Oklahoman and former NASA astronaut. Did you know Oklahoma is home to more astronauts than any other state? This month, OETA explores the new frontier with innovative specials that look at the history and experiences of OKLAHOMANS IN SPACE, plus new episodes of NOVA and documentaries that reveal what happens beyond our sky. Last month, I shared with you the results of a statewide survey conducted by OU Poll that revealed OETA is Oklahoma’s most watched, most trusted and most valued institution. That value was recently on display at the State Capitol for our annual event, OETA Day. I want to thank the more than 1,200 folks from across the state that showed up to celebrate with us on the 4th floor rotunda. Because of you, the event clearly demonstrated the deep support you have for OETA and our state leaders were impressed at the level of engagement and appreciation you have for our programs and services. As we head into summer, I promise even more opportunities for you to engage with OETA at community events and through beyond the broadcast opportunities that better connect you with our content and services. I invite you to visit www.oeta.tv to view images from recent OETA events and for details on upcoming events near you. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, fun and relaxing summer, Dan Schiedel OETA Executive Director

Happy Summer! Last month, we launched the redesign of Odyssey. We asked you to share with us your thoughts and suggestions and several of you responded. Your feedback has been integrated to make Odyssey even better. For example: “We like the new layout and the colors! The old primetime schedule contained a bit of information about the programs to assist in selecting what to watch.” ~ Larry & Diana This was an excellent suggestion by many of you. So, we tossed out the “new” primetime listings, and simply refreshed the look of the calendar we all know and love. Checkout page 9! “I love reading articles about upcoming shows. I hope you can find room for more features in the future.” ~ JD Also a popular idea…this month, we have more program information and tune-in details for you to better plan your viewing. Our team truly appreciates your very useful comments and suggestions. The goal is to provide a program guide that meets your needs as OETA supporters and your feedback is essential to making that happen. Thank you for sharing, Daphne Dowdy President & CEO OETA Foundation

MEET DR. HAWKING

NOVA Wednesdays at 8 p.m.

Trace Stephen Hawking’s great discoveries and his rise to fame and superstardom.

HAWKING Wednesday June 18 at 9 p.m.

HAWKING tracks the physicist’s life story, told largely in his own words. It includes dramatic accounts of his life from childhood through university; intimate footage of Hawking today, including his home routine and his work life at the University of Cambridge; archival footage; and candid comments from family members, friends and colleagues. Computer-generated imagery illustrates some of Hawking’s remarkable discoveries, such as the nature of black holes and the so-called “Big Bang” theory on the origins of the universe.

A LIFE OF SERVICE

From Depression-era Ohio farm to Space to the U.S. Senate; explore the life of John Glenn.

Wednesday June 11 at 10 p.m.

JOHN GLENN: A LIFE OF SERVICE captures the pivotal events in John Glenn’s life: his humble beginnings in Ohio, his enlistment following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, his 122 combat missions, his envelope-pushing exploits as a Naval test pilot and transition to astronaut. Thrilling NASA archival footage helps chronicle Glenn’s historic orbits around the Earth on February 20, 1962. As a fitting coda to a life spent dedicated to serving his country, it concludes with Glenn’s record-setting space flight in 1998 at age 77. WWW.OETA.TV

NOVA GOES TO SPACE NOVA: EARTH FROM SPACE (Wednesday June 11 at 8 p.m.) is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine “waterfall” off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the Sun’s heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet. Between the blue sky above us and the infinite blackness of space lies a frontier full of enigmas that scientists have only just begun to investigate. NOVA: AT THE EDGE OF SPACE (Wednesday June 18 at 8 p.m.) takes viewers on a spectacular exploration to probe the earth-space boundary zone, home to some of nature’s most puzzling and alluring phenomena: the shimmering aurora, streaking meteors, and fleeting flashes that shoot upwards from thunderclouds, known as sprites. NOVA hunts for sprites and finally succeed in snaring them in 3D video, gaining vital clues to unravel their mystery. NOVA also combines advanced video technology with stunning sequences shot from the International Space Station.

MICKEY EDWARDS

GALLERY Allan Houser & Paul Hacker Thursday June 12 at 7 p.m.

GALLERY PROFILES NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS GALLERY Paul Hacker: Winds of Creativity & Allan Houser: Apache Legacy premieres Thursday June 12 at 7 p.m. Native Oklahoman Paul Hacker has a knack for handcrafted creations. Hacker is an award-winning Choctaw and Cherokee Indian artist. He focuses his talents on historical pottery, flutes, custom knives, parfleche (bags made of tough rawhide), and ledger art. His ledger art pieces are drawn and painted on accounting ledger book pages that were commonly used by Plains tribes of the past. His flutes make music reminiscent of native flutes from the 1880’s. Allan Houser is a Chiricahua Apache sculptor, painter, and book illustrator born in Oklahoma. His work is on display in galleries throughout the World including: The Smithsonian Museum of Art, The National Museum of the American Indian, and the Oklahoma State Capitol. Though Houser passed away in 1994, his work and his legacy live on. Take a journey with Gallery to see historic footage and exclusive interviews from people who knew the man himself.

HALIFAX RETURNS

Thursday June 19 at 7 p.m.

Mickey Edwards was a Republican in a solidly Democratic state. The son of European immigrants, he grew up in Oklahoma City and majored in journalism at the University of Oklahoma. After graduating from law school he became a founder of the modern American conservative movement and one of the nation’s leading young conservative voices. Drawn to politics by Barry Goldwater, Edwards ran for Congress, and won. He was the only Republican member of the Oklahoma Congressional delegation, and worked to get Ronald Reagan elected president. Edwards was on-track to become the second Oklahoman chosen Speaker of the U.S House of Representatives when a crushing primary defeat ended his political career. Edwards reinvented himself and pursued a different type of public service as a college professor, author, domestic and foreign policy advisor, and sought-after speaker. He ran a political leadership program for elected officials and is a popular columnist and political commentator.

OUTSIDE THE BOX

A Privacy Expert’s 3 Tips to Protect Yourself Online The technology we’ve come to love is fast becoming one of our worst enemies and you need to protect yourself as a result. Privacy expert and reporter Julia Angwin has three tips for protecting your privacy online. BETTER PASSWORDS - Everyone needs better passwords. The most popular password continues to be 123456; the next most popular is “password.” It’s time for all of us to realize even if you have nothing to hide, you really don’t want hackers breaking into your account.

Because of YOU! Thanks to everyone who joined OETA for Read Across Oklahoma, OETA Day at the Capitol and Explore the Outdoors. Here are our favorite pictures from these recent events.

DISABLE TRACKING - Unless you love being tracked by all these online advertisements that follow you around and collect information about your browsing habits, sign up for a software program that is good at blocking these. RETHINK SEARCH PROVIDERS - I felt very good switching off Google search, which tracks my history and stores it forever. These logs could be incredibly revealing since they would show everything I’m thinking about: the plans I’m making, the places I’m going. Read Angwin’s full interview at http://bit.ly/3PrivacyTips and find more great articles like this at nextavenue.com.

digitalseries

Check out the hilarious and inspirational remixes of classic PBS icons and other digital exclusives from PBS Digital Studios. Currently featured are Mister Rogers, Julia Child, Reading Rainbow (LeVar Burton) and Bob Ross. Each video is around 3 minutes 30 seconds long and has clips from the classic series set to fun, upbeat music. Some have almost 10 million views!
