Im pacting Li v es - Bui lding Com Good Thoughts
As we move into May, we begin turning our attention to the glories of summer vacation. The frenetic pace of the school year is winding down. The traffic will decrease as the daylight increases. After eight years in Oxford, I know that our collective impulse is to relax, which is a good thing. But we must remember that every season is a season for the gospel (2 Tim 4:2). Summertime is especially suited for sharing the good news of Jesus with kids. Most people who come to faith in Christ do so before they reach adulthood. That is why Vacation Bible School and Winshape Camp (see inside for details) are so very important to our mission strategy every year, and this year is no exception. Of critical importance is having mature believers to serve Christ and kids with their time, talents, and treasure. There are few other ministry opportunities in our year that place you in such a position for kingdom impact. As a fifth grader sitting in VBS, I vividly remember a particular lesson about the totality of Christ’s work for my forgiveness. I was already a believer, but I struggled at times to rest securely in the fact of my salvation. The lesson that day was so simple, clear, and true that I still return to it when Satan buffets me. Winshape moves beyond the walls of our church to Lafayette Middle School. We lock arms with several other churches in Oxford to open the doors of the gospel to kids from all over our community. College students from all over the country come to lead the camp, but adults from here are needed simply to serve and care for kids all week. You can co-labor with God to lay the cornerstone of Christ in a kid’s life through these weeklong events. There is something uniquely effective about setting forth the truth of Scripture day after day, so that the fullness of the gospel can be put on display, kids have time to ask questions, and relationships can form that extend
beyond the event itself. That’s the opportunity that summertime affords us. Let’s make the most of it. Ask the Lord not if He can use you, but how He can use you this summer! Bro. Eric
