Newsletter August 2020
"Hello All, It seems such a long time since I have contributed to ChART’s newsletter and it is a delight to do so. So much has happened since the last one, least of all Covid 19. ChART has been kept busy with the Food Project , Grove Park Connections Virtual Coffee Mornings as well as online Yoga and ESOL classes! Our staff and volunteers have been talking on the phone weekly to make sure all is okay with our residents and visitors and some of those calls have been quite enlightening in finding out where people are at. ChART cannot wait to start up the projects where we can actually see people face to face (with a mask on). We all miss seeing you and are working hard for the projects to restart when we are allowed to following local and government guidance. A new project is starting soon, AQA accredited training in sports coaching - for anyone over 11 years (places are limited) - exciting stuff! More details inside. We would also like to hear from you with your ideas. There is a survey in the newsletter so please take the time to fill it in, it won’t take long. Anne, myself and our steering group do miss seeing you all and look forward to things getting back to being reasonably normal in the near future. Any problems, get in touch and we will try to help where possible. Look after yourselves. Jacqui (Co-Chair ChART)"

COMMUNITY FOOD PROJECT This is a quick update on what is happening in the food project, but let’s go back 4 months. The food project was opening weekly, welcoming visitors and supplying food, employment advice, Citizens Advice Lewisham support, friendship and even massages! It all stopped when Covid-19 hit us all. We had to close for a couple of weeks until we could work out how we were going to help people in need. After a lot of talking and working out how we were going to get food to people and maintain some sort of contact with them within the community, we came up with a plan … bag it up and deliver it. This we did, very successfully, until a month ago when we made the decision to get people collecting their food where possible from the W G Grace Community Centre. Still keeping in mind social distancing, masks, disposable rubber gloves, hand sanitiser, washing hands, cleaning and cleaning again areas that were going to be used, we started … and it worked. Our lovely visitors came to collect their food and we could see they were okay. A quick chat to make sure all was well and a bye till next week. You know what though, none of this would have been possible without our absolutely marvellous volunteers. They came forward willingly and with smiling eyes (the mask covered the rest of the face!) to pack bags, tidy the cupboards, count stock and all the other jobs needed to be done. What great people. Thank you. Now some figures. We serve nearly 50 individuals a week with food. If we include the families or partners it works out to nearer 125. They are also phoned once a week to make sure they are okay. Paul, the project lead, works hard to make sure everything runs smoothly and all jobs are covered. We love seeing our visitors. We love serving them. They will let us know if they need any extra help.
"I work for the food bank as a volunteer and I so enjoy doing so it’s an amazing experience. It helps so many vulnerable people struggling to cope to feed their family. Also how they show their appreciation when they collect. I would feel very lost without doing this for the customers every week. It is a wonderful thing knowing you put a smile on faces and seeing them leave happy. Also we the volunteers have become like a family, we work well as a team and leave as happy as our customers." - Michelle

" I would like to thank Laura at GCDA for organising our weekly delivery from Fareshare. Also to Fareshare for giving us a weekly contribution of food for our current service users, we are all so grateful. Also, thank you to LIDL Lewisham, who have allowed me to shop out of hours." -Paul, ChART Martin from VSL has been working with Paul on the food supply chain, he says: “It has been a pleasure working with Paul supporting him with minibuses and volunteers to enable early morning shopping from Lidl in Lee for the foodbank. It has been good to hear from Paul that it has made a difference to the project”
ChART is continuing to offer a delivery service for people not able to collect from the Food Project. Please contact Paul for more information: 020 8851 0174 / firstname.lastname@example.org

Smiles all round at Marvels Lane Primary School! We know the last few months have been tough for children and families and we were absolutely delighted to be able to support Marvels Lane Primary School to put together an activity pack for every child at the school.
"We were able to put a little bit extra to ChART's contribution and ensure that every child in the school received an age related pack. With those who had shown that they were struggling with internet access, getting a couple of extras. We have already had several parents say how grateful they are. A small gesture, but very gratefully received by all the children in our school community. Thanks so much for making this happen" - Mr Dove, Headteacher

Free English Language Classes Congratulations to Ana Vodeva the Tutor, and all the students in our ESOL class, who kept calm and carried on throughout lockdown. This will of course depend on government guidance and any change in local restrictions. Our friendly English Classes welcome anyone who needs to learn or improve. We need more voices, ideas and help! This time of lockdown has made us all think about our community, and how we support each other and do things together. This seems like a good time to make a call out for new ChART group members. We really need more local people to join us. We are particularly looking for new steering group members who can help plan and develop ChART projects. We get together regularly to discuss projects and plan activities and events. Here are some of the jobs that, when we are in full swing, we do; Agree on events and activities that fit with the plan Help out at events; anything from setting up gazebos, making tea, asking people what they want for the Chinbrook area, helping with children’s activities and much more Keep up to date with what staff are doing in their project areas. Check on how the funding is being spent and if we have enough for different projects Share new ideas to develop Keep in touch with other local people and organisations and feedback ideas to the steering group. We are really keen to support people who volunteer with us by offering training opportunities too so we hope that in this way we can reward your efforts and help you grow in your experiences. If you're interested in joining us please contact email@example.com / 020 8851 0174
