This summer, the Old Railway Line Garden Centre, in Three Cocks between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, promises to be a hub for family fun. Event Manager, Matthew said “We know the long summer holidays are difficult to fill with fun and entertaining activities for children whilst they are away from school. This year we are going above and beyond to provide entertainment including our new ‘Family Zone’. “The ‘Family Zone’ will include a bouncy castle, sandpit, photo board and pedal tractors. There will be seating to enjoy takeaway drinks and food from the Restaurant or Tea Room, offering a space to sit-back and relax whilst the children enjoy themselves!” “Our series of ‘Wild Wednesday’ workshops return and will run every Wednesday of the school break offering a different themed activity, craft or show each week. We’ve got some exciting new additions to the event

series this year including Magic, Science and Dinosaur Shows! Spaces for Wild Wednesdays are limited and require prebooking as they expect to sell out. “We also have A&S Animal Encounters joining us again on Sunday 25th August. You can get up close to and learn about some amazing animals including a bearcat, toucan, Burmese python and everyone’s favourite… Meerkats! This event is free to attend with no booking required.” For more information about the awardwinning Old Railway Line Garden Centre and their summer’s events please visit www. oldrailwaylinegc.co.uk or call 01497847055.

If you’re sent a picture or see something that makes you feel worried or sad, tell an adult you trust and they can help. For more safety tips visit: www.thinkuknow.co.uk Thank you PC Skyrme for sharing these safety tips.

Tried & Tested

We have four readers who have tried and tested Battlelands to let you know what they think! Names: Ellie (12), Mattie (11), Jessica (11) & Harry (10). What activities have you tried? Ellie, Mattie & Jess: We have tried all three. Harry: I’m not old enough yet for paintballing but I love Splatmaster (junior paintball). What age is Battlelands geared to? Ellie : Any age from 8 years upwards. Are the activities easy to pick up? Jessica: So easy to pick up. Matthew: The marshals give you help if you get stuck.

Star Name: Megan Nicholls

Age: 9

How long have you played Hockey? 1 year How often do you play? During the season I train every Tuesday and play matches occasionally. What do you enjoy most about playing Hockey? I enjoy playing in goal with the big kit on it is very fun. Best thing you have won? We’ve played a few games but Gwernyfed Hockey club is very new so we haven’t played

many matches. Funniest thing that you do during a game? In a game at Swansea I was goal keeper and one of my team players was tackling a different player and they were right by the line so while they were tackling I stuck my foot in and started kicking the ball and the ball went to the other side of the pitch. Why should kids play Hockey? Hockey is a very fun sport and it is very good for your fitness and helps with socialising with other people.

Will girls and boys enjoy the activities? Ellie: The activities are amazing for everyone. Jessica: I was a little bit afraid of paintballing to begin with but now it doesn’t scare me at

all. Harry: If you love Fortnite you will love Battlelands. What was your favourite part? Ellie: Shooting clays & the wood zone. Mattie: The Kamikaze run at the end of a paintballing session. Jess: Hitting my brother with paintballs. Harry: Capturing the flags at Splatmaster. Five words to describe Battlelands? Ellie: Fabulous activities enjoyed by everyone. Mattie: Great fun for all ages. Jess: Action Packed from start to finish. Harry: Much more fun than school.

Fun for all...

The pinnacle event in the British agricultural calendar, the 100th Royal Welsh Show, will be held on 22nd - 25th July at the showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells. Throughout the four days there will be a number of commemorative celebrations to mark this milestone in the show’s history. These include hosting a wedding for one lucky couple during the first day of the event, a farming through the ages display in our main ring each day, and an awe-inspiring Supreme Champion of Champions class, which will see horses, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs all competing for this one-off 100th Royal Welsh Show title. Every year, the livestock classes attract thousands of entries from far and wide promising a popular and exciting four-days of competitions. Along with the fantastic livestock, the show provides something to interest everyone through its wide range of activities including forestry, horticulture, crafts, countryside sports, food and drink and a 12-hour programme each day of exciting entertainment, attractions and displays. The big attractions in the main ring will be the incredible Atkinson Action Horses, who have spent the past twenty years training horses and riders for film and TV. With recent credits from Poldark, Victoria, Peaky Blinders, The Living and the Dead & Hippopotamus – it is guaranteed this elite force has at some point invaded your TV screen! Prepare to saddle up, strap in and hold on tight, as this fearless team of stunt riders bring their unique display to the main ring each day of the show. Visitors can also look forward to watching the daredevil Bolddog Lings motorcycle display team. With non-stop action from start to finish, their display will feature the UK’s top ranked freestyle motocross riders, incorporating the latest heart stopping tricks, entertaining the crowd with their on board commentary - even talking to the crowd while performing a trick flying 35ft in the air! 12

Talgarth Festival A one day only event on Saturday 24th August – starting early to allow visitors to see stalls, demonstrations, etc, from 9am. On the town square, the Brecon Town Band will be playing from 9.30am, with the grand opening at 10am by Invictus Games Champion Steve Sebburn. Followed by Paul & Hetti (water and parachute games) and Carl John, with fun, games and Punch & Judy. We have a fundraising event during the Festival, where Nena Stevenson-Davies and Sue Lewis (our chairperson) are having their heads shaved for charity. Historical memorabilia will be in the Church Hall, along with the church ladies making tea and refreshments. There will be the usual array of stalls, this year including in the basement of the Town Hall. The Dog Show will be held on Jacqui’s field – an event which gets more popular every year.

Crafts, demonstrations and animals are here again in the market, along with the everpopular sheep shearing. The Fire Station will be opening for the public to view – and we would like to say a big thank-you to them for giving their time and being a fantastic and important part of our community. Bell Gardening Club will be, as usual, in the Pool Room behind the Bell Hotel, with their spectacular show of fruit and vegetables. There will be live music from the “Auntie Depressants” (music for all generations) from midday in the Great House Barns, with refreshment stalls. Our Annual Duck Race will, this year, take place at 4pm on the River Enig. After the Duck Race, we will be going to King Georges football field – where children’s activities will be held all day. The Festivities will continue into the evening with a live band taking over for all’s enjoyment. Please note that all events and timings are subject to change. Please check our Facebook Page #Talgarth Festival.

@drovercycles

When it comes to cycling and mountain biking, our region competes with the best in the world. What about routes for pint sized pedallers, though? Little legs can find hills challenging so choose a flatter route and think about starting in a car-free environment, at least until your child - and any accompanying adults! - are confident in traffic. Here are three local options to get you started. Bike hire from Drover Cycles, with free delivery, is available on all three routes. 1. The Brecon and Monmouth canal towpath. This is a fabulous, completely traffic-free 40-mile route from Brecon to Newport. No need to ride it all in one go, though! Brecon to Talybont on Usk makes a great day out and is a 15-mile outand-back ride. Enjoy the wildlife and watching the narrowboats go by. 2. The Clydach Gorge is a superb seven-mile Sustrans route which starts at Llanfoist just to the south west of Abergavenny. Finish at Brynmawr where you could visit Big Pit to make a day of it. There is lots of historical interest on this ride, as well as gorgeous views of the Sugar Loaf and Skirrid Mountains. 3. Talgarth Mill and Bronllys Castle. A longer ride using mostly quiet roads, so a good option for older kids. Starting from Hay on Wye follow Sustrans route 42 and 8 to Talgarth and then loop back via Boughrood and Glasbury, which has a great pebble “beach” for a summer splashabout! For a round-up of mountain biking routes suitable for kids or beginners, check out http://www.drovercycles.co.uk/family-cyclingin-the-brecon-beacons/

If you’re thinking of taking the plunge and getting your kids into bikes this summer, here are our five top tips! 1. Start them early You can get children used to the idea of bikes as soon as they can sit unassisted - wrap them up warm, strap them into a tow-along trailer buggy or a bike seat and away you go! 2. Balance bikes not stabilisers De-stabilisers would be a more accurate name. Instead, start your little one on a balance bike from as young as 18 months old. With no brakes or pedals to confuse them, and no mucky chain for you to fret about, they can concentrate on developing the key skills of balance and coordination. 3. Be prepared to spend on a decent bicycle The plain fact is, if you want to get them into bikes, you’ll need to invest a bit of money in one they actually enjoy pedalling. Look for a lightweight, aluminium frame fitted with decent components. A decent bike will hold its value far better than an el-cheapo lump of lead picked up for peanuts - you can always sell it on to fund the next purchase when it’s time to go up a size. 4. Size matters A common mistake parents make is to buy a bike that’s too big for their child, thinking they’ll grow into it. Whether you’re an adult or a child, a poorly-fitted bike is no fun to ride and could even lead to an accident. The solution? Get fitted with the help of experts at a bike shop. 5. Fun and safety All the above adds to up to making sure your child has fun on his or her bike - but it will count for nothing if you choose a route beyond their abilities. You may enjoy the challenge of trying to beat your friends’ times on a categorised road climb - but the kids will be wishing they were back at home with the XBox. Start with the routes suggested above. In a few years, you might look back and be surprised where they take you! Drover Cycles stock a full range of Frog, Saracen and Ridgeback children’s bikes. Get in touch to find out more on 01497 822419 or info@drovercycles.co.uk 19
