Born in Moulins/Allier the 6th of February 1998, I grew up in Burgundy (center France) where I got a bachelor’s degree (scientific section). Interested in music, I play the guitar since 15 years and I’ve been singing recently. I played in a music group, but in starting studies, I didn’t have time enough. Now I keep playing music alone, and I perform on stage regularly. I’ve been early interested in architecture, so I didn’t hesitate a long time about the choice of my studies. I wanted to discover a new competence, a new art, but also explore a city I didn’t know. So, I went quickly to the city of Lyon, and I integrated the Ecole Nationale Supérieur d’Architecture of Lyon. Currently in third year, the theory and practice that I acquired since I study architecture allow me to have a different vision about architecture, a deeper vision, more professional. In my mind, architecture is a good way to express my emotions, as the litterature, the music or any other kind of art do. charlie.berthot@orange.fr +33 6 79 38 81 58 81 Rue de Bel-Air, 71140 BOURBON-LANCY

School project - Lyon Year : 2017 2050 project. A distant future but close enough to imagine a Town Hall only composed of automatic touch terminals, at the service of users. The main difficulty was to think about pedestrian traffic fluidity inside the Town Hall. In being located between a train station and the Perrache Exchanges Center, the project is used by two kinds of people : those who use the Town Hall services, and those who only cross the building to reach their destination. So I thought for a long time about sharing this space, in order PLAN 1:600to make it comfortable for the two kinds of Les deux uniques parois de lapeople. School project - Lyon Year : 2017, w./ P. MESSIN et M. VAURS The « Work off the earth » project is an ephemeral structure, located on the banks of the Saone, which is a french river that croses the city of Lyon. Divided in two floors, the project provides an upper terrace used as a reading space or a rest area, and a lower coworking space for the population of Lyon. The coworking space is only one meter above the water. A space for students who want to exchange, to share, and to work in a framework conducive to concentration. An inside/outside contrast which provides a porous structure, almost invisble in the urban landscape. The obliques of porticoes guide the users’ view, towards one of the oldest but also one of the most beautiful district of the city of Lyon : the old Lyon. A light structure composed of several wood porticoes, which are directly attached to the docks. A minimalist project which settles in an old urban universe which needs to be respected.

School project - Caluire-et-Cuire Year : 2018, w./ A. YEO Located on the sloping land of the city of Caluire-et-Cuire (next to Lyon), the « Stairs » project is a youth hostel, providing 26 student bedrooms which measure 16m², and 8 little apartments which measure 25m². The esplanade, composed of several platforms of different sizes/heights, becomes an extension of the ground floor during summer. Each bedroom benefits from banner windows, which frame the users’ view towards the center of Lyon. A privileged, calm and peaceful location conducive to the blossoming of young people. As a nod to the neighborhood’s traditionnal buildings, the project presents on the ground floor an offbeat entry and a covered walkway which inevitably refers to the « Traboules » of the city of Lyon, while marking a contrast by using innovative materials, such as concrete and glass. The oriented facades permit to have a better point of view on the city of Lyon, which is very close to the project.

School project - Caluire-et-Cuire Year : 2018 Located next to the « Stairs » project, the « Checkerboard » project presents 24 dwellings of different typologies (2, 3, 4 and 5 rooms). The architectural quality of this building results from a precise implementation. The concept was to take over the urban fabric of the neighborhood, and to create the same proportion of empty and full spaces. In an environment where the footprints of the buildings are particularly low, the « Checkerboard » project provides 4 towers in which the dwellings are distributed, with, for each tower, an empty space that corresponds to the footprint of the tower. This buildings disposition permits to avoid building opposites, and to create new points of view inside the buildings. We can also observe the same checkerboard concept on the facades. Indeed, loggias and windowframes which protrude from the facades create the principe of empty and full spaces. The project gains all its legitimacy.

Triangle

School project Year : 2018, w./ P. BURTIN As part of the PBM Stairs Design Awards 2018 contest, it was about creating an innovative staircase with only constraint the use of concrete for the structure of the staircase. The ÂŤ Golden Triangle Âť project is, as the name suggests, a staircase that draws an equilateral triangle, divided into three equal flights. This staircase presents two different scales. The concrete slime draws a large-scale staircase, with steps twice as big as normal. Then, the intermediate wooded steps are added to the concrete slime. The second scale appears. Now we have a human-scale staircase. The project combines the structural strenght of concrete, the lightness and elegance of glass for a minimalist result. The main difficulty of this project was to conceive it in a parametric way, by using the GrassHopper plugin. That is, using only simple mathematic fonctions (addition, substraction, division...) that allow to create complex 3D models.

School project - Oullins 69600 Year : 2018, w./ P. BURTIN et A. YEO The urban strategy of this project was about mixing programs and developing different ways to re-connect the district « La Saulaie » in the city of Oullins, in the south of Lyon. The complexity was to be part of an existing development dynamic. We decided to unclog the center of the project area, and to limit the car traffic on the outskirts of the city, with car parks at North and South of the project. Different perspectives have been created which permit to draw many walkways through the project. We drew half-open city blocks, in order to aerate them and streets around. At the West, buildings benefit from large empty spaces that allow them to get up easily. Generally, street profils have been thought in order to bring the best natural light quality to the ground floors of the buildings of this urban project. The « Over the empty » project also presents urban quality public spaces along several walkways.

void

School project - Oullins 69600 Year : 2018 This project consists in a reunification of two different city blocks, that are facing each other but also completing each other. As a result, the two city blocks’ hearts become one. In order to limit the vis-à -vis problems inside the city block heart and to create new perspectives, the city block heart is 3m high. Each building is aligned with the street, so the street is strictly shaped and it gives the user a defined perspective. The developed buildings offer different points of view facing the whole district. In the end, three different typologies have been developed: horizontal offset, vertical offset, and a roof offset. Outside extensions (loggias and balconies) allow us to make the difference between the residential buildings and office buildings. Also, the project includes an extension of the green spaces: green areas on the roofs have been added and west facades have a vegetal second skin, as a mirror of the Parc de la Saulaie.

perspective of the new spaces

School project - Oullins 69600 Year : 2018 As part of AHD education (Architecture, Heritage and Durability), it was about creating an urban public space, located in the center of the city of Oullins, in the south of Lyon. Afterwards a deeper analysis of the city, I realized that this town had an important industrial heritage. Then, the « Utopian Industry » project is a way to keep the memory of the Oullins’ workers. First, the project divides the urban space in three distinct blocks, which refer to the different buildings of an industry. Then, inside each « block », the project presents different « workplaces » which are special purpose areas delimited by the project guidelines. These guidelines link the center of the project area to the old industrial places of the city (SNCF workshops, industries...). The user comes to this new « industry » when he wants, do what he wants to, and leave when he wants to. It is in this sense that the project gains all its legitimacy.

School project - Oullins 69600 Year : 2019 Located in the South part of the urban project developed before (p.40), this cultural center is aligned on the west side of the plot, so there’s an urban void on the east part, as we planned while we were developing the urban project (p.40). The project is divided in four different volumes, but these four volumes are also linked to each other. This volumetric division allows us to play with the given functions of the project. The northern part, called “The Cultural Square”, hosts the permanent exhibitions spaces, a multifunction room and a library. The west wing is dedicated to the music school, and the east wing hosts the dance school. The central volume desserts all the other volumes and makes the link between them all. It is a meeting point in the right middle of the building. It hosts the welcome space, the ticketing space, technique spaces, and all the other administrative functions needed by such a project.

School project - Oullins 69600 Year : 2019 The architectural quality of this project is based on a developed structure, which can make the user understand the whole concept of the project. This concept, called “Limit and Limitless”, highlights the following points: in the Cultural Square, where you can find exhibition spaces and the library, the user finds himself in a “culturally delimited space”. Once he read all the books in the library, or he saw all the art-pieces of the exhibition, he has no more thing to find out. He’s dependent of what he has been given, not of what he really wants. This cultural limit is structurally represented by a 5 meters high concrete wall that delimits the Cultural Square, with a porous structure as a roof that gives to the inside spaces a quality natural light, in a spirituous way. The user cannot see the outside spaces from the Cultural Square, he’s “stuck” by the structure itself. On the contrary, the learning wings represent the “Limitless” part of the concept.

School project - Oullins 69600 Year : 2019 Learning has no end. Neither musicians, nor dancers will be done with learning all these kinds of poetic arts, such as music and dance. Therefore, this idea of infinity is structurally represented by different porticoes, concrete porticoes, that create large openings between each other. The user can now see the outside spaces. He’s spiritually able to go outside, through the transparency of the window. And this represents the idea of infinite. In the whole building, the light supply is the result of this structural concept. The “waffle slab roof” of the Cultural Square gives the exhibition spaces a zenithal natural light, which transform these exhibition spaces into an artistic and architectural walk. Both dance school and music school benefit from a lateral natural light. A light that goes through the learning wings, without being stopped, as the melodious notes of a music sheet, or the steps of a dance choreography.

Personal project - Lyon 69000 Year : 2018 Located on the outskirts of the city of Lyon, this early XXth century apartment composed of a large living room (and kitchen), a bedroom and a bathroom had a lot of potential before renovation. This project highlights an important contrast by using contemporary furniture in an ancient housing. The customer didn’t want bright colors in her dwelling, but rather neutral tones, which can adapt to several different styles. The brass of the miror and the modern chandelier is the only touch of color, which highlights the different shades of grey we can find in the apartment. A touch of luxury which gives elegance to this bright space. More difficult to fit because of the disposition of the walls, the bedroom is an elongated room with an opening opposite to the entry. The brightest space of the bedroom, close to the window, is used as a workstation, with a wooded desk which bring all the suppleness we need to work comfortably.

Personal project - Aix-les-Bains 73100 Year : 2018, w./ J. DUDAY After the acquisition of this optical shop in 2018, the owner wanted to do some works of renovation to renew the image of the brand, but also to attract a new clientele : younger clientele, more dynamic. Furniture more adapted to the sales technique has been created. The result is a more friendly-user and practical welcome, but also more practical for the shop manager. The repair workshop space is visible from the shop space : everybody can see and observe the skills of the optician. It’s like the brand’s quality warranty. Above the shop space, the manager benefit from a large storage space, served by a staircase that delimites the repair workshop. The use of wood harmonizes with the glasses display which were already installed before the shop acquisition. But it also harmonizes with the style chosen by the Krys franchise. The result is a modern shop with contemporary materials that perfectly fit the room.

Personal project - Lyon 69005 Year : 2019 In the middle of the district “Le Point du Jour in the fifth district of Lyon, this apartment on the third floor of a 1960’s building, had been renovated for the very first time in 2016. After they acquired this apartment in August 2019, the current owners wanted to do some light renovation work, in order to live in an atmosphere that corresponds to their way of life. This apartment, composed of a large kitchen, a parental bedroom with a large personal dressing and a living room attached to the dining room, has an incredible point of view on a huge park connecting all the residential buildings around. The currents owner and I decided to make the living room darker (see the 3D view beside) in order to make it more private, comfy, to make it more familiar and user-friendly at the same time. The main room benefits from a double exposition. The sofa is installed in a way it delimits the living room and the dining room.

Internship project - Courchevel 1650 Year : 2018, w./ P. SANTORO Located in Courchevel, the 1650 Residence is about to be renovated. The renovation mainly concerns the thermal insulation of the balconies and the repair of the wooded railings, which are not in godd standing today. I had the chance to participate in this tender, and to realize an approximate inventory of the building, which will allow us to bette think this project of renovation. The current building is a stack of two distinct boxes : the upper one that runs along the road which link Courchevel 1550 and Courchevel 1850, and a second box on the first one, in which we can find different typologies of apartments (2, 3, 4 and 5 rooms), all benefit from spinning balconies. The last floor having a privileged point of view on the city, will be the subject of a particular study, in order to satisfy co-owners, the most demanding one of the 1650 Residence. This project allows me to better understand how professional architecture works.

It was about to creating a multisport room for the youth of the city of Jons, but also the people of the cities around. The project integrates different spaces which are necessary to the proper functionning of a building like this, with football locker room on the east side. Located in the entry of the city, this building reveals the dynamic of public spaces of the city , and gives a landmark to the youth people of the city of Jons, who didn’t benefit from sport equipements until now. In a sensitive environmental context, the project provides organic materials : a wooded pedestal which supports the sport hall. This sport hall is largest than other spaces, but also brightness : large windows bring the needed light without dazzle youth people inside the sport building, innovative and contemporary.

School project Year : 2018, w./ M. BLANC The urban space has been, is and will always be composed of two kinds of people : the one who walks, and the one who stops. The « Urban Practices » project presents a study of the urban stops, realized by the users of the modern city. A nocturnal study which allows us to apprehend differently these stops, and to better understand how the urban space is used. The final project is a serie of photgraphies in black and white, inspired of Bernd Schaeffers’ work (german photgrapher). These photographies allows us to create several themes concerning urban stops : the seat (planned or not for this purpose), the place (attendance, lighting...), the activity during this stop (using smartphone, read books, observe the environment...). This project highlights the complexity of the spaces dedicated to the urban stops. This is a concept relating to everyone, depending on several distinct factors, such as location, age, gender...
