Horizontal Sundials The Horizontal sundial is a popular choice and has been for hundreds of years. Elegant examples can be found in English gardens and church yards all across Britain.
There are choices to be made when ordering your sundial, some more obvious than others, such as where to site the sundial. We have arrived to install a sundial and found a tree that blocks out the midday sun!
Trees, shrubs and walls that block the light at points in the day need to be considered if you want the dial to have optimum use and tell the time (ours do). Â
All artwork requires your final approval to avoid any engraving errors and we ask that you return this as quickly as possible to avoid delays.
The Horizontal sundial has three essential components - the engraved dial face, the

gnomon (this is the

triangular part that sits

vertically and casts the shadow) and the supporting buttress.
If you look at the dial face you will notice the hours around the edge. The angles of these hours change for different latitudes around the world and should be calculated specifically for the dial location.
Each sundial is created with your location in mind. Quality and aesthetics aside, this is one of the important differences between a Brad Dillon sundial and a garden centre, off-the shelf sundial.
We recommend and can supply Haddonstone plinths to locations across Europe and to the USA.
Fitting the sundial onto the plinth can be carried out by our team (depending on location and budget) or clear instructions given.Â

E. O. T. THE EQUATION OF TIME
What on Earth is it? Because of the unique aspect and position of the Earth relative to the Sun, time by a sundial appears to speed up and slow down throughout the year. This is caused by the variation of the tilt of the Earth during its orbit. Another factor is the Earths varying distance from the sun as it traces its elliptical orbit.
Our sundials have an Equation of time ring which allows the user to compensate this anomaly by adding or subtracting minutes according to the date. For other interesting sundial science topics click on the link to visit our website http://www.armillaryspheres.co.uk/sundialscienceÂ

THE QUEEN OF DIALS
ARMILLARY SPHERE The Armillary Sphere is a dial that is sure to impress. To the casual observer it is a beautiful, organic structure combining interlacing rings of metal. To the one with knowledge it is the Cosmos encapsulated with whichever representations of the globe have been included, be they the meridian, horizon, ecliptic or polar lines. The Armillary is both beautiful and functional, telling the time when the sun is overhead. To many it is a memorial, a lasting legacy, a way of leaving a mark either publicly or in a private landscape.
The process of making an Armillary is a slow and physical one. Lengths of bar are rolled by hand into rings after careful measurements are taken and engraving is finished. Bearing in mind that this is a scientific instrument, precision and knowledge of sundial science and geometry is key. Angles need to be absolutely precise in order for the sundial to tell the time. No Armillary is the same and each will have different components and rings. Corporate or public space Armillary Spheres are more substantial and often have additional features.
The proportions of our Stainless Steel Armillaries are the same as the Bronze. 6mm thick bars, ranging from 10mm to 50mm wide are used as well as round bar up to 10mm in diameter.
Bars are seamlessly riveted together, sanded and polished. We do not weld bars together, a distinguishing feature of the Brad Dillon Armillary, resulting in a much higher quality Armillary Sphere.
Our workshop is set in the beautiful gardens of a historic Edwardian mansion house, High Noon, overlooking a large South facing pond - perfect sundial making conditions.
Bronze is made up of copper and tin, both natural elements of the earth. As a result of this, the colours of a Bronze Armillary Sphere sundial blend perfectly with a traditional garden which has been decorated with plants, flowers and greenery.
A Bronze Armillary sundial by Brad Dillon will develop a dark brown patina over time and will eventually develop a verdigris. The length of time for this to occur depends on local climatic conditions.
Bronze is a very hard wearing material and will last for many generations.
We use marine quality 316 Stainless Steel in our Armillary sundials. One of the hardest metals known to man it will never rust or go dull and has a versatile aesthetic quality which allows it to contrast and complement almost any surrounding.
As with all our Armillaries the bars are rolled, then sanded and polished, resulting in a stainless mirror finish.
ECLIPTIC The ecliptic ring seen here is engraved with the symbols of the zodiac. The Earth's ecliptic path is the horizontal plane of its orbit around the sun during the year. During this time the constellations of the zodiac are visible in the night sky.
The ecliptic ring in an Armillary Sphere sundial touches the Tropic of Cancer at the front of the globe and the Tropic of Capricorn at the back.
NODUS A nodus is a ball mounted on the gnomon and positioned in such a way to cast a shadow on the hour ring on a certain date.
It relies on the constantly changing altitude of the sun and is used to commemorate a birthday, anniversary or any special occasion.
ARROW & FLIGHT The arrow head (seen here) and flight are turned from a section of bronze bar. This aspect of an Armillary Sphere sundial has its roots in traditional design. The head of the arrow points to the pole star when the sundial is properly aligned, in other words when the gnomon is aligned with the Earth's Polar axis.

dumfries house The restoration of the Dumfries House in Scotland and the preservation of its rare collection of Chippendale furniture culminated in a well attended opening ceremony in the newly finished walled garden which we were pleased to attend.
The crowd, many of which were volunteers who had worked hard on the project, were thrilled to have Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, there and there was great excitement as she unveiled a Bronze 800mm Brad Dillon Armillary Sphere, with a helping hand from HRH Prince Charles.

Our brass sundial has a 12" octagonal dial face with a bevelled and stepped edge. Dial 'furniture' includes a sixteen point compass rose, an equation of time graph and scroll and leaf filigree. It is also available with a personal motto or dedication. The infill is black enamel. The gnomon is based on an early 19th century design by the noted London sundial maker, William Deane. It is water-jet cut from 8mm brass sheet and stands 9" high. The buttress (which supports the gnomon) is turned from a 40mm diameter brass bar. This sundial has an attractive high polish finish, resulting in a smooth, shiny, yellow-gold colour when new. In time it will mature into a rich mid brown patina
