Group visits take place outside of our public opening hours, Wednesday – Saturday. Groups of up to 50 people can be accommodated, depending on time and date availability. All private group visits are by guided tour, led by one of our experienced guides. We offer a choice of tours to share different aspects of Charleston’s unique and fascinating history. Our group rates are £9.00 per person, with a minimum charge of £90.00. Evening visits are available for £15.00 per person, including a glass of wine (minimum charge of £150.00).

Group Tours We suggest you allow two hours for your visit. This will ensure you have plenty of time for your tour, to see the garden and to visit our shop. The Charleston Tour An excellent introduction, this tour tells the story of Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and their family and friends, from their arrival at the house in 1916 to the foundation of the Charleston Trust in the 1980s.

The Sisters Tour This tour examines the lives of the sisters, Vanessa Bell the painter, and Virginia Woolf the writer, who stood at the centre of the Bloomsbury group. A Day in the Life of Charleston. From sunrise to sunset, explore the details of a working day at Charleston. This tour includes a visit to the kitchen where Grace Higgins – Charleston’s housekeeper – would begin her day.

Curator Talks at Charleston A talk from Dr. Darren Clarke, Charleston’s Head of Curatorial Services, offers a perfect complement to your tour of the house. Available Wednesday – Friday. ‘Picturing Charleston’ charts the emerging presence of Charleston in the artists’ work, from anonymous subject to quintessential Bloomsbury residence. ‘Bloomsbury and Sussex’ explores the group’s relationship with the Sussex countryside. If you plan to visit Berwick Church, Dr. Clarke’s talk on the murals painted by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant offers an excellent introduction before your visit. 30 minutes, £150.
