Several Charleston City Council members were blindsided by news that employees at city-rented downtown office space rely on electric blankets to keep warm, noise-canceling headphones to drown out construction racket and alternative working spaces to continue semi-normal functioning.

“I have not gotten a direct call or communication from anybody working over there,” said Councilman Mike Seekings, who oversees District 8, which includes the office space at 200 Meeting St. undergoing renovations.

Seekings added he was concerned about working conditions after he read emails from a city source identified in the original story as Rita.

“I certainly want to go take a look and see what the issues are and what’s going on over there with my own eyes,” he said. “We want our employees to be in the best position they can be in, obviously. Just having seen this for the first time, I want to go and see for myself.”

Councilman William Tinkler said the reports were troubling, and he said he was surprised that this was the first he was hearing of the conditions.

“No employee has reached out to me

about this issue directly, but these concerns should be taken seriously, investigated thoroughly and remedied,” he told the Charleston City Paper.

Three other council members were surprised by the information, but offered no formal reaction. Two other council members did not respond to requests for comment.

When city spokesman Deja Knight McMillan was asked for a comment today about what the mayor’s office thought about the working conditions at 200 Meeting St, she declined comment.

Elizabeth Dieck wrote in an October 2025 email addressed to city staffers. “We are lucky to work in such a beautiful city — use it to reset when needed.”

Earlier this week, McMillan told the City Paper in an email that employees were given the option to work in other city offices. However, Rita told the newspaper that employees were “strongly encouraged” to continue working at 200 Meeting St., despite the poor conditions.

Ongoing construction, no clear timeline

Empty desks, a noisy hallway Since July 2025, the city of Charleston The city moved seven front-facing departments to almost 20,000 square feet of office space in the building in July. But renovations soon started taking their toll, forcing scores of employees to find other places to work. As many as 80% of the estimated 75 employees originally assigned to the space are not there on a day-to-day basis, the City Paper learned from Rita, who asked not to be identified.

has been paying $50,000 a month to rent more than 19,000 square feet of third-floor office space at 200 Meeting St., according to a finalized May 5, 2025, lease agreement obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. As of this week on any given day, only about 15 people work in the rented offices.

Ongoing construction has driven the rest elsewhere, leaving the majority of the desks, and some entire suites, mostly vacant. At best, an estimated 80% of staffers are not in the space. That’s the CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Charleston International Airport (CHS) is among more than 100 U.S. airports urging Congress to end a month-long funding standoff that has upended the nation’s air-travel system.

CEOs under the Airports Council International-North ​America and the American ​Association of Airport Executives banded together with officials to pen a letter to lawmakers, urging a resolution and citing concerns “about the g ​ rowing operational disruptions a​ t airports.”

“This has caused lengthy wait times during an already busy period with peak spring break travel,” the letter reads. “The impacts of the shutdown are significant, growing, and potentially long-lasting.”

‘Massive’ SCDOT reform bill passes the S.C. Senate At first, it looked like a contradiction.

On Thursday morning, a new national report ranked South Carolina’s highway system third best in the nation. And just a few hours later, the S.C. Senate passed a sweeping highway reform bill aimed at overhauling the way state roads are built and maintained.

But Baruch Feigenbaum, senior managing director of transportation policy at the libertarian-leaning Reason Foundation and the report’s primary author, said the actions weren’t as contradictory as they seemed.

“Where the state excels is that its spending is very low,” Feigenbaum told Statehouse Report. “But some of the other things, like fatality rates and road conditions, aren’t so good. So even though the state ranks highly overall, it’s more of a mixed story.”

Put simply, the Reason study attempts to balance low costs and good outcomes. It shows S.C.’s roads spending is so low that it essentially skews the results.

How low is it? About $200 per person, per year, according to data from the S.C. Alliance to Fix Our Roads. And that’s just not enough to maintain an unusually large state highway system — the fourth largest in the country at 41,000 miles — and keep the traffic moving in a state that’s adding more than 200 new residents every day, experts say.

“If your roads aren’t smooth, if you’ve got potholes and traffic congestion, that’s a problem,” Feigenbaum said. “Taxpayers like to see low spending, but they’d also like to see better system quality.”

Reforming the system

Berkeley County Republican Sen. Larry Grooms, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee and author of the highway bill that passed 37-1, told Statehouse Report that the legislation was written to address both sides of the cost problem, with new sources of money and reforms designed to make those dollars go further.

On the reform side, Grooms points to language that would force better coordination of roads projects across state agencies and require the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to create a longrange state transportation plan.

In addition, the bill would authorize SCDOT to enter into an agreement with the federal government to manage the environmental permitting process for new roads — an approach that’s been shown to lower costs and speed up projects in states like Texas and California. And at the local level, the bill also would incentivize

counties and cities to take ownership of non-critical state roads — and set hard deadlines for them to give their consent for new state roads projects.

On the money side, the bill would expand the SCDOT’s tolling authority, as well as authorize it to enter into public-private partnerships to build what are called “choice lanes” — a move that Grooms said was essential to get expensive projects moving in some of the state’s most congested regions.

Under a choice lanes system, such as the one used to finance Georgia’s Highway 400, tolled express lanes are added to congested highways, with private investors providing capital in exchange for the toll. In practice, Grooms noted, choice lanes wind up easing traffic not only for those choosing to pay the toll, but for the remaining cars in the still-free lanes as well.

“For me, that’s the heart of the bill,” Grooms said, noting that long-planned road widening projects in the Lowcountry like I-26 and I-526 are still on the drawing boards because they would eat up all available state funding.

“The only way those lane widenings are going to happen in the next quarter century is with choice lanes,” he said.

Grooms’s Democratic cosponsor, Charleston Sen. Ed Sutton, lauded not just the bill, but what he described as the thoughtful, bipartisan process that produced it.

“We had a lot of good discussions in committee, with a lot of good ideas, including from industry experts,” Sutton said. “And it was all very refreshing, in that Democrats played as much of a leading role on it as Republicans.”

What’s more, Sutton said, the committee is already prepared to move forward with additional reforms, once the current legislation is reconciled with a similar bill that’s making its way through the House.

“This will be the first of several efforts,” Sutton said. “It’s a massive step forward when it comes to modernizing SCDOT, but there’s more to do — and hopefully, we’ll be able to push forward and get that conversation going before this session is over.”

Gullah Geechee Corridor marks milestone, new leader

By Herb Frazier On the 20th anniversary year of the federal law that created the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, the commission which manages it has chosen a new leader.

The corridor’s 14-member commission selected Djuanna Brockington, who grew up in Goose Creek, to fill the position she has held as the interim leader since February 2024. She begins full-time on April 1.

Being at the corridor’s helm, Brockington said, it is “my vision to continue to strengthen the systems, partnerships, and resources necessary to ensure that Gullah Geechee history is preserved and the people who steward the culBrockington ture” are supported.

The corridor’s commission is the policymaking body for the region created by Congress in 2006 to protect Gullah Geechee culture, natural resources and historic sites in a narrow four-state coastal region that extends from Wilmington, N.C., to St. Augustine, Fla. Gullah Geechee people are the descendants of West Africans who were enslaved along this coastal region.

Dr. Dionne Hoskins-Brown of Savannah, Ga., the commission’s chairperson said, “The commission has full confidence in (Brockinton’s) vision and leadership as the corridor continues to grow its impact.”

The corridor’s previous executive director, St. Helena Island native Victoria Smalls, was hired in July 2021. She alleged in a lawsuit that she was wrongfully fired in November 2023. Small’s attorney, Donald Gist of Columbia, said the lawsuit was settled.

During Smalls’s two years of service, she oversaw the move of the corridor’s office from Johns Island to Beaufort. Brockington said the corridor has a temporary office in North Charleston. So far, she added, there has been no formal discussion for a location of the organization’s next headquarters.

When Brockington was named interim director in February 2024, she said she had no plans to apply for the job. “I absolutely had no intentions of applying,” she recalled.

equivalent of about $40,000 per month potentially going to waste.

“It’s not unusual for such a large building with multiple offices to have uplift work going on,” Seekings said, adding that when city council voted in April 2025 to lease the space, he was unaware of any planned construction. “I would like to put it in context and understand it. This is certainly something that should be addressed.”

But as she continued in the position it began to match her personal and career objectives.

“I wanted my time here to be a little longer to continue to bring the corridor to the next iteration of itself,” she said.

A busy 20th anniversary

The corridor’s 2026 schedule is still being written, but so far, it includes a variety of new events and programs to help Gullah Geechee people in each of the four states discuss topics important to them, Brockington said. The programs also include offering information to mitigate climate change, combat encroaching development and gentrification and sustain businesses owned by Black women, she added.

On April 18, the corridor will hold an in-person regional summit in Wilmington, N.C., with a Black church crawl. The South Carolina summit will be held on June 26 in Georgetown. Last year, virtual summits were staged in Florida and Georgia. No in-person summits occurred in the Carolinas last year due to the government shutdown from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12. The shutdown, Brockington added, also delayed the commission’s search for a new executive director.

“The twentieth anniversary is not just a milestone,” Brockington said. “It is an opportunity to invest in the next generation of Gullah Geechee programming to make sure the next 20 years is not only about preserving culture but also helping communities build sustainable futures.” As a national heritage area, the corridor receives

Allen helped prepare a study that accompanied the federal legislation that created the corridor in October 2006.

Blotter of the Week

The Gullah bill’s author

Rep. James E. Clyburn, D-S.C., wrote the 2006 legislation that created the corridor that passed Congress in October of that year. It is one of 62 National Heritage Areas in the country managed by the National Park Service (NPS). The Gullah Geechee corridor is unique, however. because the stories told in it only come from one group.

It is one of three heritage areas in South Carolina. Two decades ago some people said South Carolina is too small to have another heritage area, Clyburn recalled. “But I thought something needed to be done to preserve the culture to put some constraints on development that could very well destroy much of the culture,” he said.

Clyburn said he doubts Congress would approve the bill today given the anti-Black history sentiment in Washington. “People are reacting to a new wave of redeemer politics that seems to be sweeping the country,” he said. “I use that term (redeemer politics) because in my most recent book, I refer to these people as they refer to themselves. They want to redeem the antebellum south.”

Without hesitation he called the Gullah Geechee bill his most popular piece of legislation. “People are intrigued by Gullah Geechee,” he said. As the bill was debated, legislators and others learned that Gullah Geechee was more than a language, and it was not a derogatory term, he said. Gullah Geechee people embraced it because it gave the culture long-overdue recognition, he explained.

The 85-year-old Emory Campbell of Hilton Head Island, a legend in the state’s Gullah Geechee community, was the commission’s first chairman. The Charleston area has always had the greatest admiration for Gullah culture, Campbell said, through the preservation of foodways and the African coiled basket tradition.

“But Charleston and the nearby sea islands have grown so fast that we still have that problem (in Charleston and elsewhere in the corridor over) the retention of land in our families,” he said. tion challenges, I certainly want to make sure they get addressed.”

Since construction started, employees complained about foul smells, low temperatures and, of course, the noise. According to emails obtained by the City Paper, employees struggled with HVAC issues that began in October 2025 and were still ongoing in March of this year.

A West Ashley woman on March 6 attempted to steal more than $200 worth of beauty products from a West Ashley Circle store. According to officers, she concealed several items underneath a book bag in her shopping cart, and when security stopped her and revealed them, she admitted to having even more merchandise inside the bag, too. Police cited her for the attempted shoplifting and banned her from the store.

Seventh time’s the charm A North Charleston man on March 1 called Charleston police after he found evidence of someone having tried to break into his truck while it was parked on H Street. Police investigated, and noted that it looks as though someone used a window punch or other object in an attempt to break the window — between five and six times to be exact.

The suspect then, apparently, gave up.

Where do we begin?

North Charleston police on March 16 found a man lying across the top of a red vehicle with his buttocks out in the parking lot of a Montague Avenue gas station. Police woke him up, confirmed he had had several drinks at “the jungle bar” and found his stash of presumably weed in the center console of the car before arresting him for public intoxication. And we didn’t even mention the gun!

Charleston City Council needs to get back to work, hold mayor’s office accountable C

harleston city council members enjoyed a hearty chuckle during last April’s State of the City address when Mayor William Cogswell boasted that under his leadership, council meetings have been “civil, productive and well, short.”

Because it’s always funny when the CEO congratulates his board of directors for not watching the store.

Of course, Cogswell and his happily-home-for-dinner council members would say that’s unfair. After all, who likes long meetings? Surely, the new normal of hour-and-out council sessions provides sufficient oversight of the mayor’s office.

Besides, does anybody really miss the combative late-night council meetings of the pre-Cogswell era?

Well, frankly, we do. And after reading City Paper reporter Skyler Baldwin’s March 20 cover story on the 200 Meeting St. mess, city taxpayers are likely starting to remember those bygone days of tough questions and meaningful council vetting with real fondness, too.

To recap: Since last July, the city has been paying $50,000 a month to lease offices in a building where conditions are reportedly so bad that city staff has been forced to largely evacuate the space.

How bad, exactly? Think construction noise that defeats runway-grade headphones. Foul odors. HVAC problems that had employees working in heavy coats and heated blankets throughout the winter. Not to mention the brown gunk that falls freely from the building’s vents.

Of the 75 people who are supposed to be working there, between 10 and 15 hardy souls are said to be left. Which would mean the city is paying $3,333 per month, per employee, based

on the lease agreement Baldwin obtained via a state Freedom of Information Act request.

If you’re thinking it would be cheaper to rent them all luxury apartments at a swanky downtown address and just let them work from home, you wouldn’t be wrong.

City Hall’s response to all this? For Baldwin, it was a quick no-comment from spokesperson Deja Knight McMillan. And for city employees, it was an email from Cogswell Chief of Staff Elizabeth Dieck telling them — really — to take a walk.

“We are lucky to work in such a beautiful city,” she wrote in an October email. “Use it to reset when needed.”

And city council’s reaction? Surprise. Concern. And assurances they knew nothing about the situation.

Which isn’t the defense they think it is, since it’s actually their job to make sure that Cogswell, who functions as city administrator under Charleston’s strong mayor form of government, is managing the city’s business and finances responsibly.

But here’s the larger point. Right now, Charleston is embarking on not one, but two, massive projects — a $1.5 billion partnership with the federal government to construct a sea wall around the peninsula, and an as-yet-unfunded $800 million plan to build 3,500 units of affordable housing in the same area.

If built, each will change the look and feel of Charleston forever. And both have the very real potential to be financially ruinous in a city with a $300 million annual budget.

Put simply, it’s time for city council members to wake up, throw a little cold water on their faces and get back to work. The stakes are too high for Charleston to have a rubber-stamp council.

Even if that means the meetings have to be a little less civil, a little less productive and well, a little longer.

CHECKLIST of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities: 1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infra structure and make smart climate change decisions about develop ment, roads and quality of life.

2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic.

Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education.

Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public.

Be transparent in public business.

Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation.

If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale.

Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan.

Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage.

Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

Diploma divide offers big insights into electorate By Andy Brack

It shows the “diploma divide” — a red/blue graphic of the statewide percentage of adults with college degrees and whether they voted in 2024 for the Democrat, Kamala Harris, or the Republican, Donald Trump.

It’s not surprising that blue-state voters were more educated — this is something that political analysts have been talking about for years.

What is surprising is looking at how 17 of the 18 more educated states voted blue. Only Utah (39.1% adults with college degrees) voted Republican.

And in the 32 states that had a lower share of adults with a college education? Thirty voted for Trump. Only Delaware (#23) and New Mexico (#41) voted for Harris.

America’s polarization couldn’t be clearer based on where you live and how educated your state is. South Carolina, by the way, ranked 34th with 33.3% of adults with college degrees.

The chart came from the Age of Disruption Substack post by Washington lobbyist Bruce Mehlman, who served as an assistant U.S. secretary of commerce under President George W. Bush.

He explained the growing “diploma divide” this way: “It was stark in 2024: 17 of the 18 states with the highest share of college-educated voters voted for Harris, 17 of the bottom 18 for Trump.

“The educational divide explains profound policy differences across myriad issues, though it’s unclear whether university studies push students politically-leftward or more liberal people are likelier to pursue college degrees in the first place.”

If you dive into the chart a little deeper, you can see swing states that will likely be key for the 2028 presidential candidates. On the blue side of the dividing line are Maine (#17) and Oregon (#18), although after political shenanigans in each state in the last year, it’s doubtful they would turn red.

Below the red/blue break, though, are these three states that have been key players in past elections: North Carolina (36.4% with college degrees), Pennsylvania (36.3%) and Georgia (36.3%).

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to predict both parties will throw a lot of resources (again) into these states to try to win their electoral votes — and swing the election their way. In fact, these three states have a total of 51 (19%) of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

Other targets for Dems to boost turnout in their favor: Arizona (34.7% college educated), Wisconsin (34.6%) and Michigan (33.3%). Conversely, Republicans might want to amp it up in New Hampshire (41.5%), New Jersey (44.5%) and New Mexico (31.8%).

Now let’s say you dive another level deeper in thinking about all of these numbers. Ask yourself why less-educated states like South Carolina vote red.

Is it because Republicans are better organized? Is it because the party and its politicians intentionally prey on less-educated voters to swing them by focusing on polarizing culture-war issues? While all states are bombarded by the culture wars, perhaps these lower-educated voters are more susceptible to negative or fear-based messages on red-meat issues of immigration, gender, race and more.

Or maybe the Democratic machines in blue-voting states are competing better than in other areas with Republican messaging.

More than anything, the “diploma divide” chart offers an interesting look that can drive strategy in the election ahead.

Mehlman concludes, “Remedying this problem [of polarization] will take broader societal effort (systemic reforms across politics, media, public policy that rebuild trust). But individuals have agency here also.

“You can be part of the solution. How? Two of my recommendations from “How to Navigate an Age of Disruption”: (a) Balance your media diet and (b) Be curious about why others feel as they do. As Morgan Housel recommends we all ask, “Whose views do I criticize that I would actually agree with if I lived in their shoes?”

Local pastors ponder the question of Jesus’s appearance

n Easter morning, Lowcountry pastors will preach similar messages of Jesus’ resurrection, but if Christians are asked to describe their Messiah’s appearance, the answers might vary.

Some might say Jesus had dark skin, a broad nose, thick lips and black curly hair. Others might respond that Jesus had long, straight blonde hair, blue eyes and a pointed, narrow nose.

Three local pastors, however, said they believe those depictions are historically inaccurate, given the place and time in which Jesus walked the Earth.

The Charleston City Paper interviewed the pastors who said they’ve been intrigued by the question of Jesus’ appearance. It has been a subject of conversation, they said, within their churches and their academic training as the nation grapples with how far-right religious ideology has shaped the political discourse.

The Rev. Nelson B. Rivers III, pastor of Charity Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston, said the question of what the “living Jesus actually looked like is never more important than at Easter. If Jesus in the manger is important, then we must care about Jesus on the cross even more because for Christians the cross, not the manger, changed the world.”

The Rev. Dr. Eric Manning, senior pastor at Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street, said the question of Jesus’ appearance has him planning to educate his congregation about the 7th century monk John Damascus, who studied the theological truth of the icons of the early church.

Mark’s Episcopal Church on Thomas Street, reflected on Billy Graham’s 1973 sermon in South Africa. Graham said: “Jesus was not a White man like me, and nor was he as Black as some of you. … Don’t ever say it’s a White man’s religion, or a Black man’s religion. It’s a world religion. He belongs to the world.”

During interviews with the City Paper, the pastors shared how life experiences influenced their views on Jesus’ appearance and the messages they’ve shared with their congregations and others.

CP: This question about Jesus’s appearance has prompted you to plan a letter to the church on this topic.

Manning: “We are in the restoration process of the interior of the church, and the question is going to be what do we do with (the murals)? Do we update them? Do we touch them up? In some churches, we do the extreme, which is we paint Jesus Black and give him an Afro. That is not necessarily theologically correct either.”

City Paper: How do people use symbols to project upon them images of power?

Michael Shaffer: “This is not politics as Democrat or Republican. The whitewashing of Jesus has marginalized people of color by associating White with divinity and authority.”

City Paper: When you were growing up in Charleston, what image of Jesus did you see?

Nelson Rivers: “All I knew was Jesus was White. I was taught Black is ugly and dumb and hard to educate.”

CP: How did some people of color buy into this?

Shaffer: “As a privileged White man, I have a lot to learn. In truth, I believe the continued insistence by many, that Jesus was a blond-haired, blue-eyed White man, is rooted in our ongoing narrative of systemic oppression. That makes it critically important that pastors, particularly in 2026, do their part to rectify a perpetuating untruth.”

CP: What was your mother’s reaction?

Rivers: “They tried to put me out. ‘Don’t mess with my Jesus!’ my mother said.

Mama, that is not your Jesus. She said, ‘Boy, shut up.’ She couldn’t get over that. She came around, later on.

“I became part of the militant group. We shut the school down because they wouldn’t teach Black history.”

CP: Why wouldn’t a historically Black college not teach Black history?

Rivers: “Wilberforce is an AME school.

In their mind, Jesus was White.”

CP: When you arrived at Charity in 2008, was there a Black Jesus pictured in the church?

Rivers: “No. All they had was the Ten Commandments. This church didn’t have that (White) Jesus.”

CP: “Why not?

Rivers: “This church is woke.”

CP: “As a visiting pastor at the other Black churches have you seen a White Jesus in the sanctuary?

Rivers: “Oh yes. Many places.”

Rivers: “Early days they said it was blasphemy (to do so). But now, there is cognitive dissonance among Black Christians. They know Jesus couldn’t have been White. You will now find fewer depictions of (White Jesus) in Black churches. But the older churches won’t take them down.”

CP: Why not?

Rivers: “I think it is more of the congregations and tradition. To be fair to them, I never had to deal with taking it down because it was never up.”

City Paper: Emanuel has two White Jesus murals in the pulpit. Has this ever been a topic of discussion?

Eric Manning: “Lee Bennett, our church historian, will say it has been. He gives the

historical aspect of why it was painted that way in 1945. To have a White European Jesus in a Black church intentionally teaches that holiness looks White, authority looks White, God’s nearness is racially coded and Black bodies are less capable of bearing divine beauty.”

CP: You studied this question in seminary.

Manning: “This was a problem for me.

This is something we have to understand.

John Damascus would be concerned if these images took away from the dignity of the community.”

CP: In the 7th century, what would have been the image of the incarnation that would have been the truth?

Manning: “It would have been a person of color from Middle Eastern times. The church and the original letters of the apostles were not birthed in Europe. If we know the history of the church, then perhaps we can dismantle these inaccuracies of scripture.”

CP: If a historically accurate depiction of Jesus is not that of a Black man, then what was his appearance?

Shaffer: It is interesting that we are talking about this at St. Mark’s that has a history of colorism. Although St. Mark’s was founded by free people of color, there was a … time at St. Mark’s when (membership) was based on colorism or elitism based (on skin tone). In some of the historical icons, Jesus is very dark, and then you will see ones that are more olive complexion, but you won’t find one that has blonde hair and blue eyes.”

CP: What should Christians remember about Jesus this Easter?

Shaffer: “If you profess to be a disciple and follower of Jesus, then the one you follow was a peaceful, radically nonviolent revolutionary, who wasn’t American and never spoke English, who hung around with lepers, prostitutes and thieves, never sought tax cuts for (the) rich, was antideath penalty, anti-public prayer, never asked the sick for co-pay, never called poor people “lazy,” never mentioned abortion or homosexuality, supported paying taxes and was a brown-skinned, unarmed, Palestinian homeless Jew, who was a community organizing, authority challenging rebel. Of course, that is the one you follow, if you read and believe what is actually written in the Bible.”

CP: When did you question the accepted idea that Jesus was White?

Rivers: When I went to Wilberforce (University in Wilberforce, Ohio.) I had a White female English teacher who assigned us the Autobiography of Malcolm X. The book changed my life. It radRivers icalized me that when I came home, I took the White Jesus off the wall.”

The many splendors of crab rice

The Gullah Geechee contributions to Charleston and beyond are innumerable and incredible, from music to the arts to cuisine. Dishes like Hoppin’ John and shrimp and grits were born in the Gullah Geechee culture, and they have become an indelible part of the culinary landscape in the Lowcountry.

As National Geographic wrote in a 2023 story, “Gullah Geechee people brought rice farming and cultivation with them, having lived along the West African ‘rice coast’ from Senegal to Sierra Leone and beyond … Seafood is also a staple of the Gullah Geechee diet, with shrimp, crab, oysters and fish being essential components of many recipes.”

Anyone who has been lucky enough to eat the crab rice at the East Side’s Hannibal Kitchen’s — a perfect mix of crab meat, sauteed onion, bell peppers and white rice — has had a taste of heaven.

While Hannibal’s version is the standard bearer for many — and rightfully so — these other Charleston versions are unmissable iterations of the classic dish.

The shito spicy crab rice is a standout on the menu at Bintü Atelier. Executive Chef Bintou N’Daw, a native of Senegal, serves her version with broken rice, stir fried with greens, yam and spicy shito (a Ghanaian, seafood-forward hot pepper sauce) paste with a soft-shell crab on top.

“This dish is my favorite. I love seafood, and I think crab is fun,” N’Daw said. “As a young girl, I used to play with crabs on the beach. To me, crab is a delicacy. My island in Senegal — we have a lot of crab, and we use crab as a seasoning. We put it in stocks, and it always ends up somewhere in a recipe.”

Since crab rice is one of her favorite dishes, it was a no-brainer to have it on the restaurant’s menu. And using the hot sauce was an essential component.

“I thought to introduce that sauce to Charleston,” she shared. “I was focused on taking stuff that was familiar to people but wanted to add an African touch to it and bring it to a different level.”

Another vital component to the dish is, of course, the rice. N’Daw uses day-old white, broken rice. The rice is added cold so it doesn’t overcook, and it also better absorbs the sauce and flavor. The sauce she uses for the dish is a mixture of crab, vegetables like leeks, butter, thyme and other aromatics.

The soft-shell crab on top is the pièce de résistance. When softies are in season, N’Daw over orders and freezes them so she has them all year, and she has also been able to find them during the offseason through distributors.

“The crab rice at Delaney feels incredibly homey and comforting,” said Executive Chef Cheyenne Bond. “It’s rich with deep umami, layered with different textures, warm spices and bright flavors that come together beautifully. Every bite has something a little different, and it just completely hits the spot.”

At Shokudô, Executive Chef Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya puts his Japanese spin on the dish. He sometimes uses Tokyo negi sesame in it, which is a classic savory, slightly sweet, aromatic Japanese flavor.

However, seasonal Lowcountry produce has inspired him to mix things up.

Lately he has been using locally grown spring red onions from GrowFood. This still allows him to put his Japanese spin on it since he chars the onions on the robata grill.

Charleton native BJ Dennis, personal chef and caterer, is one of the preeminent voices representing Gullah Geechee cuisine today. His grandmother made crab rice for him growing up and his grandfather was a fisherman.

“I think [crab rice] is synonymous to Gullah Geechee culture, not just in Charleston but throughout the Lowcountry,” Dennis said. “People love the caramelization of sautéed crab over some good rice. I believe that once Hannibal’s got popular, I started seeing it pop up in all these mainstream, highend restaurants in Charleston, which is beautiful … but it’s always been a part of the community in Gullah culture.”

Dennis noted the distinction between crab rice and crab pirloo. “Crab rice, to me, you’re cooking your crab meat, sautéing it down, and then you either have it on top of the rice or you fold it into already cooked rice. Pirloo, you’re sautéing that crab meat and making your broth, throwing your rice in there and steaming it all together.”

Dennis said he likes both versions, but he more than likely will prepare his version sautéed with onion and peppers. The key for him is getting that nice brown and serving it with shrimp.

He also shared that old-timers will use jowl meat from a hog, salt cure and smoke it before frying it down like bacon to be the base of the dish.

Dennis also shared an incredible insider tip about Albany Grocery Store, located in Dale, S.C., about an hour from Charleston.

“During soft-shell crab season, it’s probably the only place where you can still get a $5 soft-shell crab, fried, with a piece of white bread. They are a fishing community. During crab season, you can go there and you can handpick local, blue crab sauteed over grits or rice. A lot of places you don’t see freshly picked crab. At Albany, during crab season, it’s going to be handpicked.”

Hamaya has used many types of blue crab in the past but noted that the crab used in the Shokudô dish is local, fresher and better tasting.

“People in Charleston love blue crab,” he said. “For the crab fried rice at Shokudô, I was inspired by she-crab soup and the use of crab mustard — which some people call crab butter. Even though we are making Japanese food, I wanted to pay homage to classic Charleston dishes like she-crab soup, where you traditionally use the whole crab and avoid any waste.”

A likeness of Andre the Giant — its fluid black ink curving into a transfixing visage — reared its head on the side of a remnant pier from the former Cooper River Bridge.

While Obey Giant is currently surging around town, Fairey has been part of my life for far longer than not.

He was that kid who lived down the street from me — the one who banded with others to bang together a backyard halfpipe and the one circling my own late-teens orbit, a mid-’80s hodge podge of punks, skateboarders, Deadheads and artists forming the city’s miniscule counterculture. Through it, he found vinyls of bands like Black Flag and The Misfits, perhaps plucked from musty rows at the Prism record store on King Street.

In my 20s in New York City, the grainy Andre the Giant Has a Posse stickers began populating street posts, and graphic designer colleagues namechecked Fairey as a classmate at Rhode Island School of Design. Later in Paris, a momentous Obey Giant loomed over my 11th arrondissement apartment.

If you love Howlin’ Wolf more than Harry Styles, you’ll be happy to know that the blues is alive and well in Charleston. Or more specifically, on Kiawah Island.

On April 19, the Blues By The Sea festival returns to the Village Green at Freshfields Village, with plenty of performers who are knee deep in the blues.

The most eye-catching ensemble on the bill might just be the first one: The Legends of Modern Chicago Blues features Freddie Dixon (son of blues legend Willie Dixon), John Watkins and Tim Taylor playing a set that brings together seasoned players steeped in the enduring electric Chicago blues tradition.

But don’t sleep on Greenville’s Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’Blues. Arnold, who played with Muddy Waters and played bass on the theme song for the ‘70s sitcom Sanford and Son, wields a signature homemade gas can guitar and a killer ensemble.

Hitman Blue, led by New York guitarist, singer and songwriter Russell “Hitman” Alexander, finishes the day with a more modern mix of blues, rock, funk and jazz influences.

This is the festival’s 20th year, and it’s organized by Gary Erwin, a lifetime blues fanatic and a performer in his own right under the name Shrimp City Slim.

In a recent interview with the Charleston City Paper, Erwin touted the low-key vibe and the low cost of Blues By The Sea. “It’s a totally free event,” he said. “Folks can bring lawn chairs, and coolers are welcome, but we’ll have food and drinks available for purchase as well.”

There are few people more dedicated to spreading the gospel of the blues than Erwin, 72. He’s a longtime Lowcountry blues figure who’s been heavily involved in organizing and promoting events like this.

“I’m originally from Chicago,” he said.

“And I’m a professional musician myself. So

So he decided to make a scene himself, starting with a public radio show.

“I went on public radio in 1984 on WSCI 89.3 FM, which was on the aircraft carrier.

Yorktown with a show called ‘Blues In The Night,’ ” he said. “And that really took off. So I got blues on the radio, now I’d love to go to a blues show, but there aren’t any.”

In 1986, Erwin started a regular concert series at the Queen Street Playhouse in Charleston, and the rest is history — a lot of history. Over the years, Erwin’s shows have brought iconic artists like R.L. Burnside, Honeyboy Edwards, Johnny Shines, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Big Boy Henry, Beverly “Guitar” Watkins and many more to Charleston.

And his passion was still apparent when he talked about this year’s festival lineup.

“Freddie Dixon used to play with his dad in the Chicago Blues All-Stars back in the day,” Erwin said. “And he is also a bass player, just like his father. So he’s steeped in the tradition, and that’s going to be some

solid Chicago blues.

“And this year, I thought we needed to honor Mac Arnold and bring him back down to the coast,” he continued.

“He’s very popular and very active in the Upstate, but we needed to bring him back down here. He’s 83 years old, but he’s at the height of his powers.”

As for the headliner, Erwin said that Hitman will wrap up the night perfectly.

“Hitman Blue is a Savannah band that brings the whole thing together because while it does play the Chicago blues, it also pays tribute to the more contemporary people like Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan.”

Erwin said that the idea behind Blues By The Sea, and all of the events he’s organized, has always been the same.

“What I want the people to see is that the blues — the authentic blues — is still a vibrant art form,” he said. “Up and down the streets of this country and around the world, the music still speaks to them. It’s a kind of common musical language.”

At the Gibbes earlier, Fairey had parsed his present focus in a chaotic, stressful, fractured world. His solution is to strive to find a way in, to initiate a conversation with people who might not agree with him, using aesthetics, beauty and strong design to “Trojan horse” ideas.

Still, the artist is by no means promoting pablum.

Fairey’s multiplying Obey Giant can serve the artist’s initial aim as a Rorschach test, this time for Charleston’s intensely pressurized cityscape. At the sight of this bold-faced disruption, do your eyes light up or derisively slit? Do you welcome a giant’s watchful eye or shoo him away like a fly in Charleston’s gilded ointment? The fate of our city may well rest in which impulse we all choose to obey.

We kick off our event with the ever-growing Health and Wellness EXPO on March 26 and March 27 at the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston. The Cooper River Bridge Run begins at 8 a.m. March 28 with the elite wheelchair division starting at 7:25 a.m. Spectacular harbor views and our beautiful architecture will amaze and inspire you as you cross the Ravenel Bridge from Mount Pleasant to Charleston.

We have one of the only races in the country that provides free transportation (250 buses) before and after the race for any participant wearing a race bib. ooking back after 13 years in business, having four Fleet Feet stores in the Lowcountry might seem like a given — something as comfortable as a worn-in pair of running shoes.

But when Amy and Chris Minkel, both in their early 40s, opened their first franchise store for running shoes in Mount Pleasant on March 14, 2013, it seemed kind of unnatural. In many ways, they were out of their comfort zone.

For years, Chris had been in management at a private golf club in WinstonSalem, N.C. Amy was a registered nurse in home health care. It was a good, stable life.

But they were itching to do something else, especially because Chris felt some dissatisfaction at his job since people seemed to have less disposable time to play golf.

“The catalyst for us changing career paths and moving to Charleston really came from Chris feeling like the industry he was in was shifting away from people and becoming more focused on finances,” Amy recalled. “We both knew we wanted to build something that was truly centered around serving others.”

They had been active runners for several years, including participating in the Cooper River Bridge Run. “It was always one of our favorite events and to now be a part of it is pretty amazing,” Amy said. “The Bridge Run isn’t just a race

— it’s a celebration of movement, community, and the impact running can have on people’s lives. It’s one of those days that reminds you why the running community in Charleston is so special.”

Getting started

In Winston-Salem, the Minkels were customers at their local Fleet Feet store and they remember loving how it participated in the community.

“The way they connected with people and helped them move and feel better really resonated with us,” Amy said. “As we learned more about the brand and the franchise model, we realized it was a great opportunity to combine our passion for health and wellness with our desire to create a business built around taking care of people.”

Fortunately, there were no Fleet Feet stores in Charleston, allowing the Minkels to invest here.

Opening a small business was new to the Minkels, but they jumped in — feet first.

“We help people either get moving or stay moving,” Chris said. “It doesn’t matter that you do it at work or night — it’s all encompassing.”

After opening the first store in 2013, they opened one in Summerville two years later. In 2021, they expanded to a location in Carnes Crossroads and in 2023 added a fourth store in West Ashley.

part of the original plan, but once we got here we quickly saw how strong and vibrant the running and walking community was,” Amy said. “Expanding allowed us to serve more people across the Lowcountry and become part of even more communities.”

Keeping moving

This year, as in recent years, Fleet Feet offers a paid, 11-week training program in partnership with the Bridge Run organization. They help runners prepare for the 10K race over the Cooper River. They offer advice to 150 or more participants on what to wear, what to eat, how to blend long and short runs to build stamina, how to prevent chafing and more.

“Providing the official training program for the race, we have the privilege of being

an integral part of many participants’ journeys,” Amy said. “For 11 weeks, we are educating, encouraging and commiserating right along with them as they move closer and closer to their goals. Seeing those same people cross the finish line downtown knowing the work they put in is incredibly rewarding.”

Later she added, “We try to give them every possible advantage so that on race day, they’ll be good to go.”

Amy said the best part of her job is helping people who come into the stores.

“Every day I get the chance to work alongside an incredible team while helping members of our community move better, feel better and accomplish goals they may not have thought were possible.

“Whether it’s fitting someone for their very first pair of running shoes, helping a customer stay active after an injury or watching someone cross the finish line of their first race after training with us, those moments are incredibly rewarding,” she said.

But just as important is the work done to help the Fleet Feet team grow.

“Watching someone gain confidence in their ability to help others, build relationships with customers and become part of the local running community is really special,” she said. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t feel like we’re just selling shoes — we’re helping people take care of themselves and connecting them with a community that supports them.”

The Minkels say they’ve learned a lot over the years in the shoe business and in being part of the Bridge Run team.

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned — through running, through business, and through being part of the Bridge Run — is that progress rarely happens overnight,” Amy said. “Whether you’re training for a race, building a team or growing a business, success comes from showing up consistently, doing the small things well and being patient with the process.”

She said running and business teach resilience. Some days, it feels hard and you may not want to get out and run or deal with the business. “But if you stay focused on your purpose, support the people around you and keep moving forward, things tend to work out.”

Finally, running may seem like an individual sport, but runners aren’t alone. With the Bridge Run, they’re part of a community. It’s much the same in business.

“When people support and encourage each other, amazing things can happen. You should never be afraid to ask questions and learn from others.”

Chris added that people should never be afraid to say yes to something.

“You never know what the opportunity is going to present,” he said. “Sometimes you’re surprised at what you get out of it.”

Chris, who still runs a couple of times a week, said Fleet Feet ownership has helped him understand the value of patience.

“When you’re starting a new business, patience is hard to have. Things never go as quickly as you want. Sometimes, take a deep breath.”

Award winners

The Minkels are winners of the Bridge Run’s 2026 Joseph P. Riley Jr. Award. It recognizes “unselfish dedication to promoting health and wellness across the Lowcountry.”

Race Director Irv Batten says they’re being recognized for being valuable to the Charleston community and the Bridge Run. “Everything they do through Fleet Feet is amazing,” he said. “The Cooper River Bridge Run’s values line up perfectly with theirs and we are very proud they are associated with the Bridge Run.” Chris Minkey said the award was a recognition of the hard work he, his wife and their team have put in through the years.

“It validates our original goals – to integrate our lives in the Charleston community, promote health and wellness, and give back.”

His wife added it was humbling to receive recognition from a race that is so close to her and Chris’s hearts.

“It’s humbling and deeply affirming for our entire team,” she said. “It validates the intentional work we’ve put into building something that’s far more than selling shoes.

“It’s about serving people and building community through promoting a healthy active lifestyle.”

The last few days leading up to any race can feel exciting and a little stressful at the same time. Here are a few tips to help you arrive at the start line ready to go:

After a long run in the Charleston spring, nothing tastes better than a cold beer. It might not do too much to rehydrate the body or replace electrolytes, but boy, it soothes.

Charleston’s downtown and surrounding areas are filled with great bars, breweries and joints where you can wash away the effects of a morning run with a frosty beverage. Here are some you might want to check out:

Plan your race morning logistics.

Getting to the start line for the Cooper River Bridge Run can be tricky. Familiarize yourself with the shuttle schedules and routes ahead of time so that race morning feels smooth and stress-free.

Nothing new on race day.

Do a test run with everything you plan to wear and eat on race morning. The last thing you want is to discover chafing, blister, or digestive issues during the race.

Hydrate throughout the week.

Focus on steady hydration in the days leading up to the race rather than trying to cram it all in the day before — which can make for a long night.

Lay everything out the night before.

Set out your race gear, bib, shoes and anything else you’ll need. It will make race morning much easier and prevent the frantic search for a missing sock.

Smile and enjoy the moment.

Soak it all in! Make a new friend while waiting in your corral and don’t forget to take in the incredible view as you conquer the big, beautiful bridge.

3 tips to keep your

feet happy Y

Staff reports our feet literally are the foundation for your running. To make sure you have healthy feet and legs, you need to take special care to make sure they stay happy. Here are some tips, courtesy of Amy Minkel, an owner of area Fleet Feet stores:

Use the right sized shoe.

Make sure to get a professional to fit your feet for the correct-sized shoe, making sure that the shoe is appropriate for the activity you’re planning. “Foot shape, volume, length and width should be considered when choosing a shoe,” Minkel said. “The correct shoe should be comfortable right from the start and not need a ‘break-in’ period.”

Pay attention to socks.

Loosen up.

A good, proper sock can help prevent pesky foot issues such as blisters, hot spots and fungal infections, Minkel added. “A sock made from a technical, moisture-wicking fabric is key. Avoid cotton as it traps moisture against the skin and loses its shape as it takes on moisture.”

Shel said that if you take care of your muscles before, during and after a run, they will take care of you.

Runners should do a proper warm-up prior to a run or walk to get leg and foot muscles ready. After then after any run, make sure to stretch to ease your muscles toward rest. Using massage tools to keep your muscles loose can also help avoid injuries.

ooking for somewhere new to log some miles as you train for your next race?

Veteran runners offer these scenic locations as alternatives for new, cool sites to experience.

This former railroad track from Albemarle Road near the Ashley River to Main Road in outer West Ashley has miles of flat, good paths on which to train.

It’s better in winter months when the bug population is more limited.

Awendaw Passage

North of Mount Pleasant around McClellanville is the 7.1-mile Awendaw Passage with scenic views of sensational Lowcountry landscapes. But you’ll need to run fast enough to keep away from mosquitoes and no-see-’ems!

Folly Beach

Running along the beach (be careful between the groins) can be uplifting, particularly along the “Edge of America.”

Remember to be careful on narrow streets parallel to the beach.

Ravenel Bridge

What better way to train for future Bridge Runs than to run 5 miles over and back across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge over the Cooper River? And running over the bridge early will have another advantage — you can stop midway and look at the beautiful harbor.

James Island County Park

This convenient park offers a bunch of trails where you can see wildlife in this sprawling area just minutes from downtown Charleston.

Sullivan’s Island

Just across the Intracoastal Waterway is Sullivan’s Island where you can get a great, long run on the beach. Go early and watch

The beach at Sullivan’s Island is a great place to catch the sunrise an amazing sunrise.

Kiawah Island

You can start a great beach run at the south of the island from the county’s Kiawah Beachwalker Park. But remember: It’s a healthy drive from the peninsula.

Mount Pleasant’s Old Village

There’s always something neat to see in the Old Village — old trees, an unnoticed cemetery, beautiful houses — whenever you run through the shady streets of Mount Pleasant’s Old Village. Make sure to check out the Pitt Street Bridge and breathe in the salt air and pluff mud.

Daniel Island

Many veteran runners laud the trails around Daniel Island as the perfect place to train.

Downtown Charleston

And last — but certainly not least — jogging through downtown’s streets when most people are asleep is a great way to greet the early morning — and a way to see Charleston when there’s not much traffic.
