Rundown Hollinshead resigns from school board after 5-count indictment A federal grand jury in Charleston this week returned a five-count indictment that accused former Charleston County School District trustee Kevin D. Hollinshead, 64, of North Charleston of bribery as well as four counts of fraud, three of which are related to COVID relief loans.

Hollinshead, who resigned March 17 after the indictment, said in a brief text to the Charleston City Paper that he was being represented by a public defender and another lawyer.

“As alleged, Hollinshead used his position and influence as a school board member for personal gain,” U.S. District Attorney Bryan Stirling said in a press release.

City spending six figures for largely unused office space

By Skyler Baldwin The noise has gotten so bad at a floor of city-rented downtown space that employees are wearing noise-canceling-headphones designed for use on airport runways. And it still isn’t enough.

Even worse, the space has been so cold at times that staff members needed blankets or coats to keep warm.

“Do not hesitate to step outside and take a walk when the noise becomes overwhelming,” City of Charleston Chief of Staff Elizabeth Dieck wrote in an October 2025 email obtained by the Charleston City Paper.

It was addressed to city staffers working in the loud office space under renovation.

“We are lucky to work in such a beautiful city — use it to reset when needed.”

Since July, the city of Charleston has been paying $50,000 a month to rent more than 19,000 square feet of third-floor office space at 200 Meeting St., according to a finalized May 5, 2025, lease agreement obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. As of this week on any given day, only about 15 people work in the rented offices. The other 60 or so people have found space elsewhere.

Forced to move

The city of Charleston was forced to rent the space last year for seven front-facing departments after it had to move them out of its space at 75 Calhoun Street. Why? Because the city had to let the Charleston County School District have all of the city’s office space there to get the district to agree to approve a new tax-increment finance dis-

trict deal to redevelop Union Pier.

So the city had to shift employees, finding lots of space at the cold Meeting Street building. The cost? More than $600,000 a year for three years. Charleston City Council members unanimously voted in April 2025 to rent the nearly 20,000 square feet of office space on the third floor, starting at $33 per square foot and increasing 3% each year. By the third year, the space would cost $35.01 per square foot, or $53,976.67 per month.

“As a courtesy during construction, the city offered employees flexibility to work from alternate office locations,” she wrote the City Paper in an email. “A limited number have chosen to do so. The building remains operational, and other tenants continue normal staffing levels.”

Rita confirmed that employees were given the option to work in alternative locations, but they were “strongly encouraged” to stay put. She did not offer further details on what that meant.

IAAM welcomes home controversial images relinquished by Harvard

By Maura Hogan Images of seven enslaved individuals were officially welcomed home March 11 to South Carolina, the place where the historically significant daguerreotypes were originally created in 1850.

The 15 daguerreotypes, believed to be the earliest known photographs of enslaved people in the United States, are now under the stewardship of the International African American Museum (IAAM).

Fassena,” said IAAM President and CEO Tonya Matthews in remarks at an event that included the media and who were operative in vouchsafing the transfer of the images from Harvard University.

Among those in attendance was Connecticut resident Tamara Lanier, a descendant of Renty and his daughter Delia.

Lanier initiated and persisted for more than two decades to gain possession of the images, by way of the lawsuit Lanier v.

President and Fellows of Harvard College.

After initially contacting Harvard in 2017, Lanier sued the institution in 2019. In 2025, a settlement was reached, with Harvard agreeing to transfer all 15 daguerreotypes to IAAM. “My ancestors now have a new home,” said Lanier, who was joined at the event, by co-counsels Josh Koskoff and Ben Crump, who took the case in spite of the daunting challenge given a formidably long lapse of the statute of limitations.

“When we initially came over, there was no construction happening on the third floor other than the little bit they did for the offices we were moving into,” Rita said. “It wasn’t until late September that the construction started full blast. Now it’s to the point that we get an email every Monday detailing what construction activities are going on and how loud it is anticipated to be. It’s never accurate.”

Since construction started, employees complained about foul smells, low temperatures and, of course, the noise.

“We are in the process of tackling air quality and temperature issues,” Dieck wrote in the October email. “An HVAC technician was in the building yesterday and reset thermostats that were stuck at 65°. We know that working in coats and under blankets is not acceptable, so this remains a top priority.”

The goal, Matthews said, was “to gather evidence to prove racist pseudoscientific theories and Black peoples were descended from an inferior branch of the human race.” Since then, they have spent much of that time stored away in the archives of Harvard’s Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology.

Now under the stewardship of IAAM, which also assisted in linking Lanier’s genealogical ancestry to both Renty and Delia via its Center for Family History, the daguerreotypes will be reframed as portraits honoring the lives and the humanity of the individuals they depict.

“This is not just about repatriations. It’s also about reparations,” Matthews said, noting that it was historic, not only in what it sought, but what it represents, “a moral reckoning, a landmark reparations lawsuit that dares to command redress for a centuSix months later, HVAC issues are still ongoing, according to a second email obtained by the City Paper. A former city employee told the Charleston City Paper that he first realized there was a problem when he couldn’t get through to the city’s Human Resources department.

Rita said conditions make it difficult to work with the public, even for those that are still at the physical location.

“You can’t get into the office without calling us first,” she said. “We will come out and meet you to bring you in. But you are discouraged from coming to the office. This is not how it used to be. … We should have never been moved to this building” Rita described previous years working for the city as fun, if not routine. But now, it’s just chaotic.

Charleston police on March 14 arrested Arthur R. Traynor III of Tacoma Park, Maryland, who is a former Biden administration appointee to the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission, for third-degree assault and battery and disorderly conduct. According to a police report, Traynor allegedly drunkenly punched an Illinois man in the face shortly before the closing of Bangkok Lounge for getting between him and a security employee. Traynor reportedly told the man to “mind your business” with a racist slur and called officers “multiple derogatory names,” police said. After booking, Traynor, who had a blackened eye, was released March 14 from the Al Cannon Detention Center.

By Alyssa McDowell While some people push broccoli around their plates, wondering if it would be so bad to just toss it, the College of Charleston is working to reduce the very thing they’re debating: food waste.

The college last year sent 410,360 lbs of organic waste to be composted through a partnership with Denali, a company dedicated to food usage solutions. The effort offset the equivalent of 60.3 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Denali’s work with the college centers around collecting unused food — from scraps never used in the kitchen to half-eaten sandwiches tossed by students. The food is separated from its packaging, leaving plastic to be recycled when possible and organic material to be transformed into compost, animal feed, mulch and bioenergy.

“I have not seen a college that is as passionate and has as detailed of a program around food recycling,” said Nancy St. Pierre, senior director of public affairs at Denali.

In 2024, Denali recycled 2 billion pounds of food waste, the equivalent of more than 350,000 semi-trailers. All totaled, the company recycled 14 billion pounds of organic materials.

The end products often stay close to home.

CofC’s scraps are sent to the Bees Ferry Compost Facility in Charleston, where landscapers, gardeners and residents can purchase nutrient-rich compost, helping to fulfill a broader sustainability goal on campus.

“It’s great that we can be innovative in our own way and show students what a sustainable community looks like.” Nicole Killen, associate director of Student Engagement at the Center for Sustainable Development at CofC said. “We have a goal to be zero waste by 2035.”

The push comes as food waste remains a massive national issue. According to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, over one-third of food is never eaten, costing each American consumer about $728 per year.

To help students participate in reducing

that waste, the college offers sustainability funding through the Cougar Changemaker Grant. Last year, the grant helped launch an official Charleston Composts residential food scrap drop site on campus as part of a larger Lowcountry initiative.

There are dozens of other residential composting drop sites available throughout the Lowcountry where community members can contribute their food scraps. Those scraps collected are turned into nutrient-rich compost that can be purchased locally. CofC even uses said compost on campus grounds.

“It’s about accessibility. It gives students an easy way to be sustainable,” said Katie Doherty, CofC’szero waste manager.

She also noted that most students live in residential halls or apartments where at-home composting isn’t feasible. With CofC’s help, students can save their scraps and take them to drop-off locations when they’re ready.

The impact of composting goes beyond simply reducing trash.

Soil is the key to the future of food production. Data from the United Nations shows that of the 18 nutrients essential to plant growth, 15 come from soil — but only if the soil is healthy. Overuse of pesticides, heavy machinery and other harmful farming practices can significantly degrade soil quality and harm biodiversity.

For composting advocates like Thomas McQuillen, vice president of client strategy at Denali, unused food can help restore what’s been lost. Organic matter becomes nutrient-rich compost that feeds the soil that ultimately feeds us. The cycle is contingent on human action.

“We have it in our hands, and we’re sending it to landfills,” McQuillen said.

His passion for sustainability started early. At 13, he worked in green bean fields, hunched over bushes to individually pick each bean — a job that shaped how he thinks about food. Every scrap, down to the broccoli left on a plate, counts.

“I’ll never waste a green bean. I don’t put one on my plate unless I intend to eat it,” he said.

And so far, much of the action saw lawmakers dealing with tax cuts, growing pains and (yet again) culture wars.

Investigate Weaver’s homeschool vouchers but hold lawmakers accountable, too I

t’s not every day you catch a South Carolina superintendent of education trying to wriggle out from under tough questions by deploying what amounts to an old Brady Bunch bit.

“No, you didn’t say I couldn’t drive any car,” a triumphant Brady boy tells his angry, and improbably coiffed, parents in one episode of the 1970s-era sitcom. “You said I couldn’t drive our car. Those were your exact words.”

Yeah, we know. Nobody ever mistook the Brady dining room for the Algonquin Roundtable.

Still, it was considerably more amusing than Superintendent Ellen Weaver’s recent attempt to use the same “exact words” gambit to defend her office’s decision to hand school voucher money over to homeschooling parents.

Yes, Weaver explained to a panel of angry and increasingly incredulous state senators, the voucher statute did, in fact, explicitly prohibit vouchers for students in any of the state’s three legally sanctioned homeschooling programs.

But it didn’t say anything at all about homeschoolers who were not in one of those programs.

See, Senator? Not any car. Our car. Q.E.D. Of course, it’s tempting to make Weaver the lone bad actor in this way, way off-Broadway Brady reboot. After all, it’s not like playing Twister with the English language is a new thing for the superintendent.

Besides, the furious senators were right on the merits.

As Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey, R-Edgefield, noted during the hearing, Weaver’s job was to execute the law faithfully — not to play billboard lawyer on behalf of the parents trying to find a way around it.

So yes, the senators who’ve called for a Legislative Audit

Council investigation to get to the bottom of this mess are right. And their colleagues should join them in approving one without delay.

But let’s not let legislators completely off the hook here.

Because the sitcom-level sophistry on this issue didn’t start with Weaver’s word games. Rather, it started when lawmakers decided to do some lexical gymnastics of their own to get around the state constitution’s plain-language ban on private school vouchers — and two S.C. Supreme Court rulings striking down previous voucher plans.

“No money shall be paid from public funds nor shall the credit of the State or any of its political subdivisions be used for the direct benefit of any religious or other private educational institution,” the constitution reads.

Pretty clear, right? But instead of asking the voters for a constitutional amendment to change that language at the ballot box, which might have been a hard sell, pro-voucher lawmakers decided to try to thread the constitutional needle with word games instead.

That’s why, under the latest voucher law, the money bounces around a Rube Goldberg-style contraption of funding streams and trusts and parent-directed accounts before finally landing in the private school’s hands — somehow making the benefit, lawmakers insist, “indirect.”

See, Justices? Not any car. Our car.

Who knows? Maybe the Supreme Court will buy it this time, if the law is challenged again. But when you’re playing those kinds of word games yourself, you can’t really expect the rest of us to be shocked — shocked! — when the education superintendent schools you on the rules of your own game.

Instead of lowering income tax, dump sales tax exemptions

From a strategic perspective, it’s unbalanced in the tax structure to diminish the role of income taxes in the revenue stream that the state of South Carolina collects to pay for things like education, roads, health care, green space and government services that civilize our lives.

From an economic perspective, it’s unfair, too. Cutting income taxes for those on the rich end of the income scale means that people who pay a larger share in taxes on sales – poorer and working class South Carolinians — will pick up a larger share of the total tax burden.

For years, South Carolina had a fairly balanced three-legged stool of taxes that generated state revenues through a blend of property, sales and income taxes. There were some fees, but they weren’t a huge chunk of revenue.

But since Republicans took control of the General Assembly in the early 2000s, there’s been a slow burn to cut, cut, cut. First went revenues on personal property taxes in a tax shift that raised sales taxes to cut taxes for property owners Narrowing the base (i.e. those with more means). South Carolina lawmakers, however, have taken the path to narrow the income tax base. That might be good for election-year politics, but from a tax structure standpoint, narrowing the base is risky because it assumes (and you know what happens if you do that) that growth will continue. And if it doesn’t? Surpluses go away. And a revenue crisis ensues.

To boost tax fairness, lawmakers shouldn’t fiddle with income taxes, leaving it as a counterbalance to regressive sales taxes. But lawmakers could reduce the burden of sales tax on poorer South Carolina by reducing the sales tax rates. How? By dramatically curbing specialinterest sales tax exemptions that lobbyists and interest groups have Andy Brack gotten from the legislature.

Cafeteria culture Today’s school lunches aren’t the sloppy joes of yore By Becky Lacey

S

chool lunch is not what it used to be.

The old days of fish sticks and rectangular pizza are gone. What students eat in schools in 2026 is much different than when their parents were growing up.

At Charleston County public schools, students might enjoy dishes like chicken and waffles, beef and cheese burritos, hot dogs and orange chicken. At one private school, choices range from teriyaki chicken to Greek gyros and from Lowcountry boil to Asian steamed dumplings.

“I am guaranteed to like something every day at lunch,” said Makena Bergren, a Porter-Gaud senior and member of the private school’s dining committee. “The variety is what makes it so appealing.”

Meal planning today doesn’t just involve ordering ingredients and preparing them.

The Charleston Country School District (CCSD) has a registered dietitian and a nutrition services team. Porter-Gaud has an executive chef and a food service director. These professionals are weighing

Certified S.C. Cafeteria

In early February 2026, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture announced the Certified S.C. Cafeteria program in which schools are reimbursed for vegetables, fruits, grains and honey produced in-state.

Created with $1 million in annual funding from the state’s General Assembly, incentives are also offered for schools that source the highest percentage of local food.

Sixty-seven of South Carolina’s public school districts and schools have signed up for the first year of the program. According to the Department of Agriculture, the program includes 874 school cafeterias across

the state serving 538,066 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

“Our state’s farmers grow so many fresh healthy foods, but supply chains and red tape have sometimes made it difficult for schools to buy local food,” S.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers said last month when kicking off the program in Greenville.

“By creating the Certified SC Cafeteria program, we’re investing in our children’s future and increasing economic opportunity for South Carolina.”

“We have to offer five components which are essentially the five food groups: a grain, a vegetable, a fruit, meat or a meat alternative and milk,” Funderburk said. “Within those five components, students have to take three for their meal to count as a free meal. One of the components also must be half a cup of fruit McLaughlin or vegetable.”

“What I love about our menu is just how many options we have,” said Angela McLaughlin, executive director of Nutrition Services for CCSD. “When you look at it, these really are, in essence, mini restaurants when you look across the district. There is something for everyone.”

At Stiles Point Elementary School on James Island, a recent lunch included Texas toast grilled cheese along with tomato basil soup. Each day, the hot entrée is the same at all elementary schools across the district and all middle and high schools have the same menu. There are also special holiday meals. For national breakfast week, CCSC will offer local grits from Marsh Hen Mill on Edisto Island.

Dining at a local private school

Porter-Gaud, an independent, co-educational, Episcopal college preparatory school in West Ashley, provides lunch to just over 1,000 students. Lunch, which is included in tuition, includes a traditional hot entrée and a power bowl, a nutrient dense dish with whole grains and roasted and steamed proteins. There is also a salad bar, deli, daily soups, pre-made paninis for upper schoolers, fruit, yogurt and a granola station.

Kelsey Chase is the executive chef at Porter-Gaud, and she typically plans meals six weeks out. Menus vary seasonally and the school uses U.S Foods and Sysco as distributors. Atlanta’s Crown Bakery provides fresh bread weekly and local vegetables and items like grains, cheeses and honey come from Limehouse Produce and Growfood Carolinas.

Like CCSD, Porter-Gaud also works to educate students on where their food comes from. The school provides signage showing which farm the local produce comes from, and vendors are on-site several times to share information with students. Chase also has a dining committee of students that meets monthly, and each year she teaches a college cooking 101 class with the senior class.

Crowd favorite meals at Porter-Gaud are what you might expect: cheeseburgers, fried chicken sandwiches, pizza, chicken tenders, tacos and pulled pork.

“Our goal is to have lunch be a delicious, enjoyable and educational experience,” Chase said. “Our program is chef-driven, and I can’t speak highly enough of the amazing team that makes each lunch happen.”

Chase said she also plans special meals for holidays. She served corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash and fish and chips for St. Patrick’s Day. For Thanksgiving, there is a big turkey dinner before everyone goes out on break. The school also celebrates national food holidays.

“Porter-Gaud offers an array of daily options, leaving students excited as they head into lunch,” Harry Goldberg, PorterGaud senior and dining committee member said. “I take pride in knowing every meal is healthy and powers me through my classes throughout the school day.”

The Certified S.C. Cafeteria program is already having an impact on public school students. CCSD is the second-largest school system in the state, and the district serves more than 50,000 students in 85 schools.

“We work through our vendors,” said CCSD Registered Dietitian Megan Funderburk about new products available through the program. “They may be connected with a local farm and have a local warehouse. If we’re interested in a local farmer, we can always see if the vendor would allow them to distribute through their warehouse.”

Early College High School (ECHS) on Columbus Street also qualifies for a program called the Community Eligibility Provision. According to the Education Department, the provision “provides an opportunity for schools and local educational agencies in high poverty areas to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students Funderburk without the burden of collecting and processing school meal applications for free and reduced-price meals.”

All food in a CCSD school is prepared on-site and, each day at ECHS, students can pick from a hot meal, cheese or pepperoni pizza, a chicken sandwich, a cold

A taste of Afghanistan in the Lowcountry

Mount Pleasant’s Annie’s Hot Donuts will close its doors after service on March 22. The business opened in 2017 and the owners shared that the shop is closing as a result of the landlord selling the building.

Prophet Coffee will close in April at 194 Jackson St. after less than six months. The North Charleston location remains open at 4427 Spruill Ave.

By Becky Lacey There is often no better way to understand a culture than to experience its cuisine. North Charleston’s Afghan Restaurant and Market, which opened in fall 2025 at 5101 Ashley Phosphate Road, is a testament to this.

The restaurant-market is owned

by Fauzia Garner, a native of Kabul, Afghanistan. Garner has been enmeshed in the Charleston culinary scene since 2007, working in restaurants and through her own food truck. Throughout this time, Garner realized Afghan families living in the area did not have a market to buy foods from home. This, and a desire to share the food of Afghanistan with the wider community, was the impetus behind opening the restaurant and market.

A lifetime of preparation

Garner moved to Frankfurt, Germany, from Kabul when she was 16. After high school, she started working as a server at a hotel restaurant while also catering with her mother.

“I learned everything from my mom,” Garner said. “The stuff was a gift from God. The recipes that she taught me. Everything was homemade and that’s what we’re trying to do here at the restaurant.”

Garner During her time in Germany, she met her husband. They relocated to Toms River, N.J., in 1994. Garner went to college in the United States to learn English, and she and her husband moved up and down the east coast several times for his job.

They settled in the Charleston area in 2007, and Garner started catering Afghan food. She built a following through word of mouth and participation in festivals.

This led to personal chef gigs and a food truck, Fauzia’s Kitchen, which she ran from 2015 to 2020, all while volunteering on an almost daily basis at a food bank in North Charleston.

Garner looked for a location for Afghan Restaurant and Market for over a year before finding the spot on Ashley Phosphate Road.

“The reason we opened the market was because a lot of Afghan people here don’t have the spices and the rice,” Garner said. “Also, we have a lot of fresh [Halal] meat. People come weekly for fresh meat. People would go all the way to Columbia or Atlanta to buy spices.

That was the reason we opened.”

While the Afghan population in Charleston is small, it is close knit and vibrant.

“We have about 20 families here now,” she said. “We had more, but people moved to California and other states. Two families are helping me in the kitchen. One lady comes in the morning to help cook the rice, and one lady comes to cut and marinate the meat and to cut vegetables.”

Afghan food and provisions While it’s hard to go wrong with the menu at Afghan Restaurant and Market, some highlights include bolani, manto, kaboli palow and the lamb shank. Bolani is a very traditional Afghan dish that can be found with different fillings, from potato

to pumpkin to meat. Manto is a steamed dumpling stuffed with ground beef sauteed with garlic, onion and spices.

Kaboli palow is the national dish of Afghanistan — the only other country that makes it is Uzbekistan — and it has basmati rice, carrot, raisins, almond and cardamom, served with choice of lamb or chicken.

Other options at the restaurant include chicken and lamb gyros, kebobs, an excellent stewed eggplant dish and desserts like ferni, a pudding like sweet made with milk, cardamon, corn flour and pistachio. There is also a kid’s menu with a variety of kebabs served with rice and French fries.

Most dishes at Afghan Restaurant and Market are served with yogurt and chakni (chutney) that are both house-made. For the chakni, Garner uses a milder red jalapeno, fresh cilantro, vinegar, salt and water. The only downside to the delicious chutney is that Garner does not yet bottle it to sell in the market.

For those that have not yet had Afghan food, Garner has a clear and welcoming message. “I promise you’re going to like it,” she said. “The food is not spicy; it doesn’t burn your mouth. The spice is not too strong and doesn’t take over the flavor of the food.”

New Indian: Curry Palace, from the team behind Taste of India, has opened at 652 St. Andrews Blvd., in the former La Bonne Franquette space. Focused on the culinary tradition of northern Indian cuisine, the menu features dishes cooked in a clay fire oven and an excellent lunch deal. The restaurant is open daily except for Tuesdays, and serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. More: currypalacechs.com Waterfront dining: The Indigo Road Hospitality Group will open Riva Mare, a rooftop restaurant at Navy Yard Charleston, this summer. Film director Tony Benna has spent a lot of time on the festival circuit with his 2025 comedy/documentary André Is An Idiot about, of all things, cancer.

The A24-distributed film has been rolling out to theaters since March 6 with a local premiere at the Terrace Theater slated for March 26.

André Is An Idiot won the Audience Award at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival last year and has garnered many rave reviews with Esquire magazine calling the documentary “Comedy of the Year.”

In a recent interview, Benna said is elated to see the film connect with film festival audiences. And he’s really excited about it going into theaters.

“This is the real test,” said Benna, who lives in Charleston.

The journey began when Benna’s friend, San Francisco ad man André Ricciardi, found out he had stage 4 colon cancer. Upon revealing the diagnosis to his mother, she called him an idiot (hence the title).

Ricciardi’s next move was to reach out to Benna and Lee Einhorn, Ricciardi’s best friend and the eventual executive producer of the Benna film, with the idea of making a comedy about his diagnosis.

Having cut his teeth on skating videos and animated interstitials as a kid before moving onto making short films, advertising and music videos as an adult, Benna was on board with the unorthodox project that would capture his friend’s irreverence and humor — despite the grim subject matter.

“I would have never thought my first film would be about a friend of mine with cancer,” he said.

But to Benna, Ricciardi was one of those rare people you meet.

“He’s such a unique character, such a unique friend. He views the world just differently than anyone else I’ve ever met.”

World-renowned outsider artist and Charleston native Shepard Fairey is the featured guest at two weekend events.

Charleston animator Trent Shy created stop motion for the documentary Naturally, one would assume a person would want a film charting their battle with colon cancer to be handled with the gravitas and heavy-handedness that it would deserve, maybe even with a healthy dose of pity.

“André wanted it to be funny. I remember he’d say, ‘If it’s not funny, I don’t want to do this.’ I would show him some edits, and he loved the funny ones, and then I’d show him a dramatic one and he’s like, ‘OK, next!’

“He just kept pushing the humor, which I loved. But for me, it had to really ride that line of comedy and tragedy because that’s what we were experiencing. The film isn’t really about cancer, it’s about André.”

Charleston’s concert calendar is never short on touring acts, but the city’s local musicians are just as worthy of the spotlight.

On any given week, venues like the Royal American and Music Farm are packed with homegrown indie bands, singersongwriters and genre-hopping experimentalists who keep the scene alive between big-ticket shows.

The next few months are no exception, with Steve Aycock Photography file photos a steady stream of album releases and stacked Erode the Dream will bring its darker, grungy edge to the Music Farm’s Indie local bills filling stages all around town.

Initially, Ricciardi wanted the project to focus on his friendship with Einhorn.

Benna felt otherwise.

“I really was trying to just unpeel the onion to figure out what makes André tick, what makes him think the way that he thinks.”

During filming, Benna said he pondered an angle that veered in a more medical direction, conducting interviews with Ricciardi’s oncologist and multiple nurses at University of California San Francisco.

But Benna ultimately made a decision during the edit, keeping the focus on his friend, who passed away in December 2023.

“I just realized that if we start bringing the science into this, it becomes an entirely different film. So many docs are fear based. I just wanted to avoid that altogether.”

Benna was adamant about not making a “sad, dramatic cancer movie.” In fact to enhance the comedic and experimental “feel” for the movie, he chose to use stopmotion animation sequences with some help from local stop-motion artists Trent and Liz Shy, who donated their time and creativity to the project.

During post-production, Benna’s unorthodox approach to the film was met with some resistance by some who questioned his vision, seeing his stubbornness as potential career suicide.

“There were definitely times where I thought if this is not going to be an authentic portrait of André that even his daughters and his wife don’t agree with, then I failed. I’d be better off just burning the whole film down. You couldn’t put André in a box. Why would you put a movie about him in a box?”

Though the film keeps its focus on André and his diagnosis, Benna stressed the importance of colonoscopies and colon cancer research.

Recently, he and Einhorn went to Washington, D.C., with FightCRC (Fight Colorectal Cancer) to lobby Congress to get more funding and research.

“It’s really affecting the younger generation,” the director said. “In fact, it’s the number one out of all cancers. It’s killing more people under 50 than any other cancer right now, and it’s the least funded as far as research.”

That said, has Benna followed his own advice?

“Yeah. Not long after Sundance and I ran to get my colonoscopy, I didn’t want there to be a sequel called Tony Is A Bigger Idiot.”

1. That Petitioner is the only child of Jennifer Joyce Singleton Wilson.

2. The Petitioner will show that Jennifer Joyce Singleton Wilson died intestate on September 23, 2007 (a copy of said Death Certificate is attached hereto as Exhibit A) and that no formal or informal administration of her estate has been done.

3. The Petitioner is informed that under South Carolina Code Section 62-3-108, no administration of the Estate can now be initiated, therefore she must bring this action for the determination of heirs.

4. That the Petitioner will show that at the time of death, Jennifer Joyce Singleton Wilson was divorced and survived only by her daughter, the Petitioner.
