While birdwatching and reporting can be fun, McCullough said it’s important to maintain integrity and treat the survey like the scientific research that it is.

“The most important recommendations I have are for people to report only what they are able to identify with 100% confidence and to report only the highest number seen at one time,” he said.

“Subsequent visits of a species could be the same bird that has come back, and adding a number each time this happens can provide misleading information.”

Charleston County Council is continuing to take steps to refine a likely 2026 Transportation sales tax referendum as a followup to the overwhelming denial of a 2024 half-penny tax proposal.

A council committee has recommended 15% of the proposed tax revenues to Greenbelt projects and 20% to public transit projects. Additionally, the committee recommended slotting funding for a project to improve the Sam Rittenberg Highway bridge between Charleston and North Charleston, as well as reallocating $75 million from the city’s Battery extension project toward other Charleston projects.

Council Vice-chair Larry Kobrovsky wants more Greenbelt projects.

“Our job is to look at the needs of the county and put something out there that will make a difference ... and preserve something that they see everyday that’s disappearing,” he said.

The recommendations have not yet been approved by council members and are expected to be brought up at the Feb. 24 meeting. —Skyler Baldwin

Blotter of the Week

West tells students to focus on love

By Skyler Baldwin About 100 students at Chicora Elementary School last week had the rare chance to speak with a really famous guy — American philosopher, theologian and Black rights activist Cornel West — and ask him the questions they thought were important.

“This is crucial,” he told the Charleston City Paper before taking the stage on a chilly and wet morning on Feb. 5. “I had so much love, courage and integrity poured into me as a child. And I want to pour whatever depths of love, courage and integrity I have now into them because these kids are our future.”

Students asked about books and stories that changed his life, times he was fearful to speak up but did so anyway, and moments in his career that were especially challenging or impactful.

North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess, who attended the event, said he has been listening to West speak for years — since he was in college.

“Dr. Cornel West coming here was powerful because normally, we don’t get to see our national leaders in the school, in the community,” Burgess said. “We have to go to the coliseum, a convention center or other program.

“But he came here, and he shared this information with our children. And most importantly, for me, he allowed them to ask him what he did when he faced a crisis, how he worked through hard times. And he said, ‘Love.’ ”

‘Gangster proclivity’

He told students the story that turned his life “upside down” was the story of Jesus.

His faith, he said, kept him out of official membership of the Black Panther Party (but didn’t stop him from allying with them on local efforts), introduced him to the late Tupac (who allegedly had very pretty eyes) and guided him from violence when he was younger.

“I used to teach in a church called House of the Lord Pentecostal Church in Brooklyn, and we would give free lectures Wednesday morning,” West said. “Every lecture, Tupac was sitting in the front row.

He was kind of my student in that sense. …

“In my younger years, I was kind of a gangster. I used to fight all the time, and I

But I was wrong in knocking folk out. I was a gangster before I met Jesus, and now I’m a redeemed sinner — with gangster proclivity.”

And he took all the energy from “knocking folk out,” West said, and used it to fuel his activism.

“I’m still full of rage,” he told the students.

“I’m mad when I see poor people. I’m mad when I see the homeless. I’m mad when I see folk incarcerated. … I don’t like people being mistreated.”

Harsh truths and the power of love

Throughout the event, organized in part by local advocacy group Reading Partners, as he answered questions from students ranging from 1st to 5th graders, West didn’t shy away from the often scary realities he has faced as a Black rights activist. When one student asked if there had ever been a time he was afraid to use his voice, he answered honestly.

“I am 72 years old, and I’ve had a whole lot of death threats in my life,” he said.

“I’ve had people show up and put a gun to my wife’s head. That’s not nice, is it? I get upset. ... Does that make me afraid? Yeah, it makes me afraid. But do I stop raising my voice? No, it makes my voice stronger.

“When you love Black folk, when you gotta tell the truth, you get in trouble, and they even try to kill you. But you gotta love them anyway, and that breaks the fear inside you. ... Love can break the back of fear.”

Dyrell Clark, said that level of honesty is important for the students to get from West.

“They have this view of the world, and that view will be their small four corners,” he said. “Bringing someone in that’s not from this community, they get to see an array of different things through his words, and they get to see the world differently.”

Literacy and learning

Organizers and West said the speaking event was focused on improving and encouraging reading and literacy. West said in his own life, other than Jesus, music and reading were at the center. Throughout his conversation and in his answers to students’ questions, he compared Black history icons to modern music stars.

“You can’t talk about Martin Luther King Jr., you can’t talk about Malcolm X, you can’t talk about Whitney Houston, you can’t talk about Kendrick Lamar … without deep love,” he said. “And this is important because we Black people have been hated for so long, and we teach the world about love.”

And on the importance of reading, West’s advice was two-fold. When you open a book, he said, you’re exploring a different world, broadening your mind and deepening your heart. “You’re learning how to love more deeply,” he explained.

“Too often, we are selfish. We are too concerned only with ourselves, and you have to have something that takes you out of yourself,” West said. “Love is the best thing to do that. The love of reading, the love of your mama, it takes you out of yourself, so you don’t think you’re the center of the whole world. There’s other people in the world, and they are just as important as you are.”

A Mount Pleasant man on Feb. 2 reportedly stole a cake and several packages of trading cards from a U.S. Highway 17 store. Employees said the value of the stolen goods was between $25 and $2,000.

He described it as having no muffler (generally illegal), a police radar in the windshield (dubious, but fine) and 19-inch wheels with gold rims (legal, but kind of tacky). Bipartisan pushback stalls THC ban in South Carolina House

By Jack O’Toole, Statehouse bureau Republican leaders in the S.C. House took a rare loss on Feb. 4 when a bipartisan coalition of breakaway Republicans and Democrats stopped two bills banning THC products in the state.

“That was pretty unique,” Charleston Democratic Sen. Deon Tedder, a ban opponent, told the Charleston City Paper.

“It came as a real shock to most of us in the Senate.”

The first bill, which supporters and opponents referred to as a “partial ban,” would outlaw all THC-infused edibles and allow 12 oz. containers of drinks with 5 milligrams or less of THC. Purchasers would have Tedder to be 21 or older and sales would only be allowed in liquor stores.

After hours of debate, the bill was sent back to the House Judiciary Committee.

The second proposal, an outright ban on all THC-infused products, ended the week in limbo, never having reached the floor.

Both bills were sponsored by powerful House Judiciary Chairman Weston Newton,

R-Beaufort, who made it clear he preferred the full ban, but would support the partial ban as a compromise if necessary.

Proponents argued the partial ban would protect children from an unregulated market without age or potency limits. Additionally, they noted, State Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel has long supported banning all or most THC products for what he has called public safety reasons.

“I’ve heard it called the Wild West,” S.C. Rep. Jay Jordan, R-Florence, told his colleagues.

“This is an effort to rein that in.”

But opponents were quick to note that THC products are a $1.5 billion business in South Carolina, employing 3,500 people in 1,800 small businesses — most of which would be shuttered by the bill.

What’s more, they argued, it’s not necessary to ban a whole category of popular consumer products that many say give them opioid-free relief from conditions like chronic pain and PTSD in order to set reasonable age restrictions.

That debate came to a head when Dorchester Republican Rep. Greg Ford, who became a grower, processor and retailer of hemp after doctors recom-

mended THC for his then-young son’s lifethreatening seizures, introduced a 28-page amendment to effectively legalize and regulate the industry. His son, he said, is now 24 and relies on THC for his health.

“The reason he turned 24 is because we found the hemp products,” Ford said.

After the amendment failed in a close vote, suggesting the partial ban was in trouble, House members voted to return it to committee.

Following the session, Keel reiterated his opposition to legalizing and regulating THC products, adding that he was “adamantly opposed” to Ford’s proposal.

“This amendment creates an enforcement and inspection structure that is wholly unenforceable,” he wrote to House leaders in a Feb. 6 letter obtained by the S.C. Daily Gazette.

An industry under threat

The legal THC products industry in S.C. was born eight years ago, when the U.S. Congress included language approving foods and beverages containing up to 0.3% of Delta-9 THC derived from hemp, but not marijuana, in the 2018 farm bill.

Seemingly overnight, products containing intoxicating levels of Delta-9, as well as other, less common hemp derivatives like Delta-8 and Delta-10, began appearing on shelves across the Palmetto State.

And according to industry leaders like Rebel Rabbit co-founder Pierce Wylie, some of the early operators, in particular, were “bad actors” who used lab-synthesized THC and marketed their products in ways that appealed to children.

That’s why he says he supports strong regulations to protect consumer safety and keep the products out of the hands of kids.

But with a S.C.-based THC drink manufacturing operation now serving consumers in 14 states, Wylie said the partial ban’s 5 milligram limit would threaten everything he’s built over the past five years.

“There has to be a middle ground where we can protect consumer safety, but also give customers access to a level of THC that’s effective for them,” Wylie said, adding that 10 milligrams seems to be a reasonable limit based on consumer research.

Lawmakers told the City Paper they weren’t sure when or in exactly what form the partial ban bill would return to the floor from committee.

SC250: Historic sites plan Revolutionary War events

By City Paper staff The American Revolutionary War in Charleston will come alive at the Historic Charleston Foundation (HCF) and the Charleston Museum during a coming series of lectures, tours and demonstrations for adults and students.

In the weeks ahead as area celebrations and remembrances peak around July 4, the Charleston City Paper will publish stories of more events that recognize South Carolina’s significant part in the nation’s war for independence.

Colonial close-ups

The HCF and the museum have filled their calendars with programs that include upclose looks into colonial-era art and fashion, a battlefield fortification, the life of women and enslaved people and the science of warfare.

“The history and preservation of the city is deeply woven into this country’s story, and we’re proud to be able to share that with the community,” said Roualeyn de Haas, HCF’s chief operating officer.

Beginning Feb. 17, a special docentled tour at the HCF’s Aiken-Rhett House will focus on the archaeology of the Revolutionary War trench discovered in

2018 at the house. The 2:30 p.m. tour is every Tuesday through Nov. 24. New permanent signage will be installed at the house to explain the trench.

HCF will participate in a family-focused events from June 27-28 during the area’s Carolina Day celebration at Fort Moultrie.

Two new temporary interpretation signs will be installed at the end of February at the Nathaniel Russell House to explain a painting in the dining room that depicts the battle at Fort Sullivan. New information also will be installed that describes Nathaniel Russell’s life during the war era.

During the HCF’s Charleston Festival from March 16 to April 11, a Food for Thought lecture by upstate historian Durant Ashmore will be offered on April 6. He will discuss the Revolutionary War in the South Carolina backcountry.

Charleston Museum

“Excitement is growing as we begin 2026 as this year will mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of our nation,” said Carl Borick, the museum’s director.

America 250, a bipartisan initiative, is attempting to engage every American in the anniversary. “America 250 has designated

Charleston, along with Philadelphia, New York and Boston, as cities for enhanced celebrations of this auspicious occasion,” Borick said.

At the museum, two guided tours — on Feb. 19 for home-school children and the other on Feb. 24 for adults — will feature the museum’s newest special exhibit, Ringleaders of Rebellion: Charleston in Revolt, 1775-1783.

Last Drop of Blood: African Americans in the American Revolution is the topic of a Feb. 26 lecture by Zachary Lemhouse, director of the Southern Revolutionary War Institute.

On March 8, families can tour the town home of Thomas Heyward Jr., one of South Carolina’s signers of the declaration.

Virginia Theerman, the museum’s curator of historic textiles, will describe on March 12 the museum’s collection of textiles and collection pieces from the war era.

On March 25, Borick will discuss and sign his new book, Resistance: South Carolina’s Militia and the Fight for Independence. This is Borick’s third book on the revolution.

Curator of archaeology and battlefield archaeologist John Fisher on April 23 will discuss his archaeological findings of arrows, spears and musket balls at battle-

fields around South Carolina.

On May 8, a STEM-infused program for teenagers will explore the chemistry behind musket and cannon fire during the Siege of Charleston.

The museum’s curator of historic textiles, Virginia Theerman, will lead a May 20 lecture on the fashions and material culture of the mid-to-late 18th century.

Thomas Heyward Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina, and life in British-occupied Charleston for women and enslaved people will be the topic of a May 21 tour designed for students.

The museum will display on May 22 an original copy of the Declaration of Independence.

Eliza Lucas Pinckney’s robe will be displayed from May 23 to July 26. Historians credit Pinckney with perfecting the growth of indigo, which became a major cash crop in South Carolina.

From June 15 to Sept. 20, the logbook from the HMS Bristol, the flagship of the Royal Navy during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, will go on display.

Protect Charleston by hiring archaeologist

here’s been a century-long clash in Charleston between the past and present that has become grittier in recent years. The zeal to make a buck competes with Charleston‘s legacy to preserve its buildings, character and history.

All of these new hotels, the incessant pounding of piledrivers and the continuing rise of prices of properties where longtime owners have been squeezed away are symptoms of this disease to mold Charleston into a historical Disney that the city’s original preservationists might not recognize.

Just look at recent headlines to see the conflict in which the forces of business are clashing with residents who don’t want so much change, so many cranes, so much traffic, so much noise.

Preservationists got a big win when they led the S.C. Ports Authority to back off of a redevelopment proposal at Union Pier that would have made it into a warren of chunky megabuildings that didn’t look like they fit in the Holy City.

Now the city, along with philanthropist Ben Navarro and his team, seems to be on a more inclusive path to reshape the area by taking history, scale and modern times into consideration.

More recent is a construction project at Courier Square, where 74 sets of human remains seemed to be unearthed in the middle of the night and quietly reinterred elsewhere. The secrecy of that project may have flipped a community switch to make people want more input about another grave proposal nearby — the construction of a large dorm for the College of Charleston on an empty site where thousands of people may have been buried before the Civil War. And now comes the next big historical thing: the U.S. Custom

House on East Bay Street. Seems the federal government wants to get the grand historical building off of its books because nobody is really using it. A recent check showed no more than a dozen vehicles in a parking lot where lots of people used to work. The U.S. Public Buildings Reform Board, which recently had a public hearing with the city to discuss turning over the building, says it costs $414,000 a year to operate the building for the few people inside of a beautiful public building that’s closed to the public.

So the question ahead with this grand structure is what’s next? Another hotel? City offices? A different, grand public use? Fortunately, stakeholders like the Preservation Society of Charleston and the Historic Charleston Foundation have been involved with community thinking about what’s next.

But what’s clear is that city council, not only a mayor with a developer-in-chief mindset, needs to help drive the train for the building’s future use.

Which is why a resolution by the city’s Commission on History to hire a full-time city archaeologist to protect buildings and involve more people in decisions is such a good idea.

Let’s listen to the words of Charleston historian Harlan Greene, the commission chair who told council members this week: “Preservation laws protect everything from the ground up,” he said. “But the hallowed ground on which we stand often has no protection for what lies beneath. It’s likely that this resolution just presented and the anxiety, concern and distrust that many of our citizens feel would not have arisen in the first place if this part of our history and our past was protected.”

CHECKLIST of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities: 1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infra structure and make smart climate change decisions about develop ment, roads and quality of life.

2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic.

Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education.

Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public.

Be transparent in public business.

Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation.

If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale.

Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan.

Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage.

Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

Reseat the Marion Square Commission to restore public trust By Andrew Waring Geer

That habit of remembrance is not something to be embarrassed about. It is part of our identity. It is also why, when we choose to add something to a shared civic space, we owe one another a public process that is visible, predictable, and fair.

That is what went missing when the Robert E. Lee Memorial Highway marker appeared in Marion Square with little to no public notice. I am not here to litigate the merits of Lee, and I understand that Charlestonians hold conflicting views about Confederate symbols. In my view, there’s no question that Lee was a traitor who aligned himself with and advanced a cause responsible for profound moral crimes.

My point is simpler. When the normal process is bypassed, people assume the fix was in, and the result is anger and distrust that could have been avoided. In a city this historically literate, process is substance.

Marion Square sits at the center of this Andy Brack debate because it functions as Charleston’s Central Park. The city pays to maintain The 1947 marker appeared on King it, repair it and operate it day to day. Yet Street on Dec. 11 at Marion Square the square is owned by the Board of Field Officers of the Fourth Brigade and managed under a memorandum of understanding that most residents have never seen. That mismatch, public responsibility without transparent oversight, is how we end up with surprises.

The good news is that Charleston already has a solution on the books. In 1882, after complaints about a neglected and dismal public space, the city created the Marion Square Commission to govern the park. The ordinance establishes a seven-member commission, three appointed by City Council, three appointed by the Board of Field Officers, with the president of The Citadel serving as chair. It is a balanced structure, designed for shared stewardship and public accountability, rather than private discretion. This commission was active for 116 years with the last recorded meeting taking place in 1998.

Since 1998, new members have not been seated, even though it remains in the city’s code of ordinances. Turtle Survival Center restores endangered populations

ucked away at the end of a barely marked gravel road in rural Berkeley County — and behind an electrified, barbed-wire fence and an automatic gate with several security cameras — is a haven for endangered freshwater turtles.

This may be the Lowcountry’s best-kept conservation secret. The Turtle Survival Center (TSC) near Cross, S.C., is home to more than 800 turtles from more than two dozen species. The facility is a physical outpost for the conservation group Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA), the largest nonmarine turtle organization in the world.

And you can learn all about it this weekend at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.

“We want to tell people about what we do around the world and in South Carolina,” said TSA Communication Manager Elena Duran. “It’s a really exciting time of year for us and a great event to be a part of. We’ve been going for about 12 years now, and we still meet new people every year.”

The TSA, headquartered in North Charleston, started at SEWE in 2014 with a little table and just a few turtles. Now, it’s grown to two booths and multiple tables and a featured time slot in Marion Square.

“The demonstrations are new this year, and that’s kind of weather-dependent,” Duran said. “We usually bring a large alligator snapping turtle with us. Depending on how they’re doing, we can bring them out, and they’re a really cool species. Kids love them.

“We just hope to educate the general public on what they can do for turtles in their everyday life,” she added. “A common thing people experience a lot down here is, ‘I see a turtle in my backyard or crossing the road.

Global impacts

The alliance has one of the highest impacts of any conservation organization, according to Clinton Doak, director of the TSC, working in more than 30 countries to preserve and protect wild populations of freshwater turtles. And it does its work with just 25 people, as far as full-time staff members in the United States go. Only 10 of those work at the center in Cross where they tend to hundreds of turtles every day.

But Doak said they act as more of the backup plan.

“We are an ark, or a bank,” he said. “We take these species and manage their breeding, and then, hopefully, they can go back into the wild. Our primary focus is working inDoak country with tortoises and freshwater turtles around the world.”

Still, the work done at the TSC is vital.

While most people understand now that painting the backs of turtle shells with nail polish or acrylics is a bad idea, there are other tips to keep in mind to make the lives of turtles a little easier when you find them.

DO: Prioritize your own safety. If you want to help a turtle cross the road, wait for the street to clear, pull over and help them on their way. Lift gently, holding the turtle like a sandwich, and set them down on the other side.

DON’T: Put them in water. Turtles seek water when they are thirsty or in need of a swim. Some terrestrial turtles struggle to swim when tossed or set gently in even shallow water, leading to accidental drownings. Stick to soft grass, when available.

DO: Leave them alone. If you find a turtle in your backyard or elsewhere, and there’s no immediate danger, simply leave them alone. Turtles are survival experts, and surprisingly good climbers. They tend to know what they want in the wild and how to get it.

DON’T: Bring them inside. Intentions are often pure, but ultimately, turtles know where they want to go and what they want to eat. Leaving them outside, helping them on their way when possible, is usually the best way to go. of Sulawesi, one of the largest islands in Indonesia. The island is home to some of the highest levels of endism in the world — several species of reptiles, mammals and insects can only be found in the wild on that island, including the greenhouse’s residents.

Almost all of the turtles in the TSC greenhouse were wild-caught founders with an estimated age of at least 40 years old. Many of them have been in the U.S. for roughly 30 years already.

“They’re part of our breeding plan,” Doak said. “Their genetics are valuable to helping save the entire species. A lot of the time, when they come here as founders, they stay for the rest of their lives.”

They are also part of the first-ever international reintroduction program. For the first time, the TSC plans to take hatchlings from the U.S. and reintroduce them back to their native habitat on the other side of the globe. It’s been done before with sea turtles, but never before with tortoises and freshwater turtles, Doak said.

Round-the-clock care

Out of the 27 species of turtles kept on the 63-acre property, 21 are targeted

for breeding programs. The team uses an on-site X-ray machine to find female turtles carrying eggs, waits for them to nest and then harvests the eggs to hatch in an incubator.

From there, the baby turtles go to the hatchling room, where more than 50 turtles live the first year of their lives in precisely controlled, 82-degree individual environments.

“It’s our cleanest room,” Doak said.

“Nothing from the outside world comes in here unless it’s sterilized. They spend the first year there, then they’ll go to a juvenile rearing building for another year or two.

Then, they go outside.”

In the greenhouse, the environment is kept to a stable 75-degree temperature to mimic the island of Sulawesi. The turtle team has also planted several Southeast Asian plants that serve as shade, food and more for the turtles, including jackfruit, bananas, star fruit, dragonfruit and hibiscus.

Most of the actual work is contained to the fenced-in 10-acre facility. The rest of the property is conserved as ephemeral wetlands and forest.

“We’re not going to develop on it or do anything with it,” Doak said. “We’re using it instead for studies on local turtle populations.”

Most of the 800 turtles they have live in outdoor enclosures. During the winter months, however, the turtles burrow underground for brumation — a sort of hibernation.

It’s a very different environment than what the turtles will experience at SEWE, which is why only a specific few “ambassador” turtles will attend the event.

“We’re very aware of the turtles’ care and want to make sure they’re all as comfortable as they can be,” Duran said. “The ambassador animals are very different from the other people — I mean, turtles — at the center. They’re more used to the noise and the people and being handled.”

SEWE names Florida’s Genk as 2026 featured artist

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition picked Florida-based painter Henry Von Genk III as this year’s featured artist. His original painting, “Charleston Splendor,” is the exposition’s official featured painting and is the subject of the 2026 poster, available now at sewe.com.

“Wildlife conservation is something everyone should support,” Genk III said in a press release. “I feel a responsibility to capture the world we live in for the future, much like the Hudson River painters did before cameras.”

The 2026 featured painting offers a peaceful Lowcountry scene: a white heron perched in marsh grasses beneath a pastel evening sky alive with luminous cumulus clouds.

“This painting lived in my mind for two years, and SEWE was the perfect way to bring it to life,” Genk III said. “As a private pilot, I have a deep love for clouds. The golden hour light on my favorite cumulus shapes with the Lowcountry as a backdrop is my idea of heaven. It sums up everything I love about Charleston in one image.”

Genk III, born and raised in Jacksonville, is a self-taught oil painter known for richly detailed coastal landscapes. He employs glazing and shadowing techniques inspired by the Old masters and the Hudson River School to create depth in his paintings, according to a press release. After a successful career executing large-scale murals for museums and private collectors, he now focuses on fine art that celebrates the waterways and salt marshes of the East Coast.

A more equitable, local food system

Lowcountry Street Grocery (LSG), GroceryRx (GRx) and Community Supported Grocery (CSG) are three Charleston-based, interdependent entities that create a social enterprise providing a more equitable, local food system for consumers and producers.

“We can radically address systemic barriers to healthy food access, food insecurity and local food proliferation,” said LSG founder and CEO Lindsey Barrow Jr. “Simply put, we envision a community that naturally supports both small, local producers and neighbors in need through innovative and sustainable systems.”

LSG started as a mobile farmers’ market in a retrofitted school bus named Nell. The organization believes there is a simple solution to a systemic problem: food equity.

CSG is a grassroots local food delivery service that has combined the local farmers’ market with subscription-based online ordering since 2018. The weekly delivery

also offers menus, recipes, producer information and dietary restriction information.

This gives growers and producers a more streamlined way to distribute food and introduces them to new customers.

GRx is a way to directly combat dietrelated illness.

“The intensive, in-house nutrition program targets individuals who fall through the gap of our broken healthcare system as well as low-medium income neighbors that don’t qualify for federal or state aid,” Barrow said.

Following a structured nutrition class, GRx patients receive weekly fruit and vegetable prescriptions redeemed through the mobile market or CSG deliveries. GRx also includes cooking demos, recipes and clinical guidance.

Olivia Myers, GRx director and founder, shared tips for healthy eating. First, stock your fridge and pantry with healthy options, which she said is easiest if it’s automated through a service like CSG, or through a static order at a local grocery store.

Mistry was born in Ahmedabad, India, and much of the food at Huriyali is inspired by her mom’s cooking. After meeting at College of Charleston, McFall and Mistry lived in India with her family. This was the inspiration for Huriyali.

The Huriyali team sources mindfully made ingredients and when speaking with them, words like nutrient dense, cooked to aid digestion and whole-food based continue to come up.

“I think part of what has gotten us to ten years has been continuously improving the offerings we have,” McFall said. “Not necessarily new offerings, but just looking at the existing recipes and thinking, ‘How can we make this more delicious?’ or, ‘How can we add more value for the customer?’ ” There are also plans to add night service — probably starting with one night weekly – at the downtown location.

“I think that healthy food is a lifestyle, more than a diet,” McFall said. “The whole thing with Huriyali is we’re trying to incorporate it into the community’s lifestyle by making craveable, healthy foods.”

VALENTINE’S SERENADE

Two Charleston exhibitions illuminate Black excellence How is it that the flowing, watertight weaves of a seagrass basket endure across centuries and continents?

What stories emerge in patches of a quilt or the hues boiled into a batik?

And why does the Confederate flag flap on still?

As Black History Month continues, two Charleston art exhibitions show in sharp, shining relief the continuum of Black artistic excellence in this country, whether spanning standout works from its earlier days or drilling down into one artist’s singular abiding vision.

Neither show is curated chronologically. But both open meaningful entrees to longstanding practices and motifs–some informing, some warning.

At the International African American Museum (IAAM), we land in the exhibition called middle of somewhere: the art and the legacy of Black Southern makers to celebrate the creativity, resilience and cultural contributions of Black artists from and inspired by the American South.

For the exhibition, which runs through Feb. 14, 2027, Martina M. Morale, IAAM’s

director of curatorial and special exhibitions, transforms the impressively flexible gallery with works mainly from the museum’s collection.

Sleek, wood displays lend to standout craftsmanship of the Black makers of intricately woven basketry, deftly stitched quilts, masterful mega-vessels of clay. With the faint scents of this freshly cut lumber, sweet seagrass and time-worn textiles, it’s a fullon sensory experience, one wrought from iron and pine, realized in cotton and clay.

To wit: The lustrous brown stoneware of David Drake (Dave the Potter) is poised near an elegant chair by free Black cabinetmaker Thomas Day. An iron gate boasts the signature ornate scrolls of renowned Charleston blacksmith Philip Simmons.

Zig-zagging along a wall, textiles veer from a mid-twentieth century Malian mudcloth to the 2020 work Equal Justice by Essie Bendolph Pettway of Gee’s Bend, the Alabama contemporary quilter collective.

On a jutting platform, the intergenerational Gullah Geechee sweetgrass artistry of Dionne and Delores Jones finds a contemporary counterpart in Bantu Knot, a sculptural vase of Danielle Williams.

Displays at the IAAM include works by scultpor David Drake and Charleston blacksmith Philip Simmons is perched near a recent sleek work by Chicago-based, contemporary social practice artist Norman Teague. The exhibition also features a digital “Design Your Own Quilt Block” experience; prompts inviting visitors to consider everyday objects.

There is no missing the continuum of artistic excellence in this stellar exhibition, one nimble to needs of the times, and steadfast in its time-tested traditions, too.

Charleston bluegrass musician Shelby Means said she’s proud of the reception to her new album, which has now been featured on a curated Spotify playlist “At first it felt a little bit slow,” she said of the response to her album. “But I can be a little impatient. So I think just having patience and continuing to put one foot in front of the other has been rewarding.”

Of course, it helps that the response has picked up considerably.

“My single ‘Streets Of Boulder’ (featuring Grammy-winning acoustic guitarist Molly Tuttle), did really well on the Bluegrass radio charts,” she said. “So I’m really happy that I can check off a goal, because one of my intentions going into the record was to get some airplay. I also just got a notice that ‘Million Reasons’ (the album’s third track) was added to a Spotify curated playlist, so I’m really excited about that.”

Now, with most of 2026 ahead of her and a band of close collaborators behind her, Means is ready to have some fun, starting with these shows with di Vitry.

“I have a really full schedule coming up,” she said. “We’re playing MerleFest this year, which is a bucket list event for me, and I’m looking forward to taking my band out on tour and continuing to dive into the songs that I wrote. And it’s all thanks to Maya and Joel and Jacob and everybody that’s believed in me up until this point.”

South Carolina regulations define a Medicaid beneficiary as an individual who has been determined to be eligible for health services as described in the State Plan under Title XIX and Title XXI of the Social Security Act (S.C. Code of Regulations R. 126-425)[J]. The South Carolina Family Court lacks authority and jurisdiction to determine the minor child’s eligibility for the Medicaid program.

Based on the foregoing Defendant is informed and believes that the SCDHHS is entitled to an order dismissing the cause of action brought by Plaintiff which requests an order of this court that the minor child be granted lifetime Medicaid coverage.
