PRESS RELEASE The Belize Unity Alliance (BUA) Supports Citizens Organized for Liberty thru Action (COLA) The Belize Unity Alliance supports COLA in its call for the resignation of Minister “Sedi´ Elrington from his post as Minister of Foreign Affairs. We also join with COLA in its call for a complete boycott of Guatemalan goods and services.

The Belizean people have lost all faith in the effectiveness and trustworthiness of Minister Elrington. The Belizean people deserve to have a Minister of Foreign Affairs whom they can trust, and who does not appear at every turn to be more anxious to meet the demands of Guatemala than to represent the legitimate rights of Belize. If the Minister does not have the grace to resign, then the Prime Minister should listen to the voice of the people, and of reason, and sack him forthwith.

Belize imports over US$60 million worth of goods each year from Guatemala. In return, Guatemala buys little or nothing from Belize. Every dollar which we send to Guatemala deprives a Belizean business here at home, including small grass roots businesses, of much needed sales. Guatemalan people, especially the people of Melchor, are getting rich from the sweat of Belizean brows. This has to end.

The Belize Unity Alliance strongly believes that the current government has lost all credibility. The basic and essential function of government is to protect the existence of the country, its territory and its borders. The function of government is not to provide passing entertainments for the people, but the serious business of ensuring the safety of its citizens and the integrity of its borders. Without secure borders and law and order, a country has no hope of building an economic climate which will provide jobs for all who need them. Jobs are the building blocks for a secure and happy society. This government has completely failed to stand up to the unlawful Guatemalan claim, and it has also failed to provide a climate of safety and security which would attract investors and provide jobs.
