Geese enjoying some grass Bronze Turkeys in Norfolk - 1930’s

Geese were domesticated some 4000 years ago by the Egyptians They are usually bred for their meat, speciality eggs and down feathers

Turkeys are believed to have originated from Mexico some 2500 years ago and were introduced into Britain during the 16th century by the English navigator William Strickland.

They make charming pets, useful “guard dogs” and effective “lawn mowers”

They are omnivorous and spend the majority of the day looking for food such as plants, seeds, insects and worms. Edward VII made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. The Bronze is a breed of domestic turkey. The name refers to it’s plumage, which bears an iridescent bronze-like sheen.

Harvesting late 1940’s Sheepdog

The combine harvester is a machine for harvesting grain crops. The border collie is a herding dog breed developed in the AngloScottish border region for herding livestock, especially sheep.

The name is derived from three combined operations - reaping, threshing and winnowing.

They are widely considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds. Although the primary role is that of the working stock dog. dogs of this breed are becoming increasingly popular pets.

The largest combines today can harvest 70-80 tonnes every hour. The waste straw from the crop is baled and used for bedding material for livestock.

Working border collies can take direction by voice and by whistle at long distances. Their great energy and herding instincts are used to herd all kinds of animals, from the traditional sheep and cattle, to free range poultry and pigs. They are also used to remove unwanted wild birds from public and private areas.

The price of a combine harvester can be as high as £350,000.

Tractor in 1950’s

Peacock

The peacock’s extravagant and colourful plumage makes this large member of the pheasant family easy to identify.

Tractor is from the Latin verb ‘Trahere’ meaning ‘to pull’ In the 1840s the UK invented steam traction engines to work the fields

Only the male peafowl has the species’ flamboyant hallmark plumage, which reaches the pinnacle of its splendour when the bird is 5 or 6 years old.

Ford Motor Company first mass produced tractors, in 1907

The female chooses her mates according to the size, color, and quality of their trains.

It is estimated that there are 25.5 million tractors in use worldwide with 5 million in the USA and 500,000 in the UK

Peafowl, are omnivorous, and begin their day by foraging for food. A meal may consist of berries, leaves, seeds, insects and even small mammals and reptiles. Main Image: New Holland tractor in 2011
